Why does my iMac (on occasion) not shut down, warning message comes on saying i have to switch off by pressing and holding the power button then restart, something to do with a Panic report?
Thanks
Brian

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Does turning off your MacBook by holding the power button hurt your MacBook

Almost whenever I exit out of War Craft 3: The Frozen Throne my Mac Book freezes up, as a result I frequently turn off my Mac Book by holding down the power button- Does this hurt my Mac Book?

There is most definitely a chance that you can cause stability problems (although, it is somewhat less likely that you would cause any harm to the hardware). The likelihood of you causing problems increases directly with how often you shut down this way. You should be seeking a solution to the issue you are having with WC3. As Johathan mentioned, OS X does quite a bit in it's shutdown process. Bypassing that can cause anything from basic data corruption, to stability issues, to a non-bootable system depending on what the machine is in the middle of doing when you force it to shut down. In general, worst case scenario is that you would need to re-install OS X to fix things up. It's really not worth taking a chance on your systems stability for the sake of a game. I would say that you really should try to track down a solution to the problem you are having with the game.

  • I don't think my computer is completely shutting down.  I think it is only going into sleep mode.  When I hit the power button, it turns off immediately instead of shutting down.

I don't think my Mac Pro is completely shutting down.  When I hit the power button, it just turns off immediately instead of going through the normal shut down procedures.  I heard that I should try resetting the SMC, which involves removing the power cord.  However, when I remove and replace the power cord, it turns on automatically, so I can't even properly reset that to see if it is the issue.  Is this probably a power supply issue?
Actually, in case this information helps... The computer went into sleep mode the other day, and would not come back.  This is a work computer that I use for our photography business, and at this point I am just trying to run it as a drive to get the photos onto our new computer, but this issue is keeping us from doing so.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Try a SMC reset.

  • My ipad has sort of frozen but will not turn off by pressing and holding the sleep/wake button

my daughters i pad has sort of frozen. She can lock it and unlock it.  All it is showing is her wallpaper.  All her apps have disappeared.
We cannot restart it as per the apple support troubleshooting assistant as it will not turn off.  Help

Have you tried to hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds or so, until you see a silver apple. See if you can get it to reboot.

  • Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

You need to connect to iTunes and restore.
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
You may need to put the device into recovery mode, this is covered in the link on this page.
Did you back up the device?

I cannot shut dow my MacBook Pro using the apple icon (as it was suppose to be), actually I have to press and hold the on/off buttom. I have taken twice for Mac dealer and they did not solve the problem. What must I do? I would to remark that I have installed 2 antivirus and uninstalled one of them. Since then I have facing this troublesome issue. Thanks

Uninstall the other AV software. They are not needed. All they do is cause trouble like you are having now.
If you have been forcing the Mac to shut down with the power switch you may nave corrupted your disk. You should repair it with disk Utilty to remove any corruption the shutdwons may have cased.

My iPhone 4 will not power on.  When connected to iTunes via my computer, it is recognized and shows fully charged battery.  Pressing and holding the sleep/wake button does nothing; just a black screen.  Any suggestions?

Only way is to bring it to the Apple Store and use the warranty if it hasn't expired

  • I dropped my IPhone 6 plus in water and now the power button does not want to work

So i had the Iphone 6 Plus in my hand when it feel into a big puddle and it was in there for more than a minute so i come home and i find out that the power button (on the right hand side button) doesn't want to work like its on and im on the home page and then i press the button and nope nothing and the volume button somewhat works and sometimes the power button works so i turn it off and i put it in the rice next thing you know the phone turns on again without me touching it or anything. So I need help and the phone is new not even a month i have had it and i don't want to spend money on it. Please help! This phone is my life and i will do anything(that does not wast money) to save my phone.

You can try leaving it in that bag of rice for 5-7 days to see if it will dry, however if it will not stay turned off, I would say that something is shorted out. You will need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service provider and be ready to pay for an out of warranty replacement. If you purchased Apple Care Plus there is only a deductible, but without it, you will have to pay the price of an out of warranty phone. User damage is not covered under warranty.

How do I delete apps in os5? I press and hold the icon and they all begin to shake but the little x does not appear allowing me to delete.

You can't delete any of the Apple built-in apps e.g. Music, App Store, Game Centre etc. If you don't get the 'x' on any of the apps that you've downloaded then check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Deleting Apps isn't set 'off'

Do you know which iMac model family you have? There are four families dating back to 1998. Troubleshooting depends on that. This forum covers the first three families made from 1998 to 2005. iMacs newer than that get a separate forum.
Do you have the system disks that came with the computer? If so, and depending on model, you may be able to start from the CD/DVD and then make the jump to booting normally.
All computers has a little battery on the logic board that holds date, time, and some important startup parameters when the compuer is taken off wall power for a short time. If your battery was very old and died, then the settings the computer needs to start may have been lost when you unplugged it. For some Mac modles, booting from a CD or DVD gets around this temporarily, but ultimately the battery needs to be replaced. The internal batteries are cheap but can be hard to access on some iMacs like the G4 "desklamp" model

  • How do you get a cd out of the imac g5 drive if the computer doesn't know it's in there.  I've tried shutting it off and holding the mouse button, but nothing works because the computer can't eject what it isn't registering to be there in the first place.

I can't get access to the cd that is probably slid past where it is supposed to go.  The computer doesn't note it is in there.  This happened once before and I used another cd to tap it into place, and then I could eject the cd.  It's a library music cd and nothing I've done to eject it, works.  The dvd drive is empty to the computer, even though I've tried to trick it by getting it to burn a cd or dvd.  It says insert disc.  Hope someone knows how to pop it into place or open the thing up to get access to the drive.  That cd is due!

power off your machine.  hold down your left mouse button.  power on your machine.  This should eject the cd.
    Eject cd
Here is a web page on twelve ways to eject the cd.
    http://www.osxfaq.com/dailytips/01-2003/01-16.ws
You indicate you are running on a g5, but 10.6 doesn't run on on a G5.
On a PowerPC-based Macintosh (but not an Intel-based Macintosh), you may use Open Firmware to eject a CD or DVD disc when normal methods for ejecting it have not succeeded.
Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key combination Command-Option-o-f. Enter commands:
    eject cd
    mac-boot

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.
