Why does my iMac power off?
After 5 or 10 minutes of use, I hear a "ping" like a the sound of a light bulb burning out, the screen goes black and the iMac has turned itself off. I can turn it back on with the power button, but it just happens again.
Is this what is meant by "crashing?"
Where do I begin to diagnose?
Thanks.
Posting here instead of its own thread because I am having the same problem on 20'' iMac G5 (pre-integrated iSight, purchased in August 2005) running Mac OS X 10.4.11.
It powers off unexpectedly (not normal shutdown--sudden interrupt as if plug was pulled). It doesn't happen after any set period of time--sometimes shortly after startup, sometimes after it's been on for hours.
I tried resetting the PMU as per the Support directions. No change, although I wasn't sure if I actually did it correctly--the directions were simple, but there was no confirmation tone or anything like that.
I tried resetting PRAM. No observable changes.
I don't think it's a heat issue since the computer has even powered itself down like this while asleep!
I suspect it's a hardware issue, but before I take it in somewhere (it's still covered by Applecare), I though I had better ask you knowledgeable folks if there were any other steps I could do on my own. It'd be a bad time of year to be without my Mac for even a few...days? Weeks? How long might this fix take? =(
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide
P.S. If I should go ahead and give this its own thread instead, let me know

Why does my imac keep logging off of wifi? Why cant i stream music?
Are you up-to-date on your software? Apple produced a fix in late February for this, which fixed it for many. Some have indicated, however, that it didn't solve it for them. If you can't download the fix via Software Update, it's located at

Why does iPhone randomly power off?
My iPhone powers off at, seemingly, random times. It should not power off at all unless I power it off. Any explanations as to why?
Without more specific information it's hard to assist you.
First thing is it may be hardware failure which means you will have to take it to Apple store and see a genius expert. You will need an appointment first though.
There a several things to try first though as I have seen, and also experienced iPhones where the operating system appeared to lock up at what appeared to be random times which would eventually cause the phone to eventually reboot.
Usually though, if you pay enough attention as to what might be causing it, I was able to determine that it was a troublesome website or an application that caused iPhone OS to lock up.
You can usually try several things to fix this.
First try to work out what might be causing the problem by seeing if you can replicate what you were coin immediately before it happened. If it's an app that's causing the problem then remove it. If you can't work out what's triggering it then try a soft reset by pressing the home and power/sleep buttons til the phone reboot (you'll see the Apple logo reappear after the phone shuts down).
If this doesn't work then try doing a restore on the phone and first set it up as a new phone, then test the phone and see whether this has fixed it.
If this does fix it then you can try doing a restore again and instead of setting it up as a new phone use the option to restore from a backup. If the problem returns after you do this, then your software backup is somehow corrupted and you'll need to restore as a new phone and start resetting it up with all your old settings.
Anyways I hope this helps you in some way -
Why does my iMac turn off unexpectedly?
I have had my iMac for over two years and never had this problem. It has just started about two weeks ago. About 30 minutes or so, maybe shorter or longer, after I turn it on, this gray bar goes over the screen and then a message appears. It says to please turn off or restart the computer. What can I do to stop this. I've heard that it might be an overheating problem, but I'm not sure.
Hello Fredrick. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If the screen is in multiple languages as per the following link, then you are experiencing a kernel panic.
What is a Kernel panic?
It is difficult to pin down but is often a hardware related matter. Sometime failing RAM can lead to this problem as well.
Consider the exploration of this topic in the following link.
Resolving Kernel Panic's by Dr Smoke -
Why does my iMac (on occasion) not shut down, warning message comes on saying i have to switch off by pressing and holding the power button then restart, something to do with a Panic report?
Thanks
BrianHi mende1,
you asked me to post the Kernal panic report then next time it appears, sorry for the delay but it was fine until yesterday when it happened again so here it is, hope you can make sense of this, thank you for your help.

Why does my iMac display go off when I am starting up or waking up my machine from sleep..?
When my iMac goes to sleep I then later try to click the magic track pad or keyboard and it will usually then show the initial password entry login screen and then go off. The machine is still on but the display is black and will sometimes flash up the screen again if I press the magic track pad or keyboard but will then black out again..Well, there are many different reasons why it does this. It might shut off due to power voltage problems, system overheats, or there is a System Problem. The reason it might be hard to boot up is because your power button might not work properly or your system hard drive is damaged.

Why does my iMac display keep shutting off? Computer still running in the background. I've tried unplugging and restarting, to no avail. The computer is well out of warranty - about 7-8 years old, running 10.6.8
Checked.... the settings had not been inadvertently changed, but I did move the scroll and reset them back to the original. Hasn't shut off again.... yet. Will re-post with follow-up one way or the other. Thanks.

Why does my iMac appear many times in my network and labelled 1,2,3, etc
why does my iMac appear many times in my network and labelled 1,2,3, etc
Ok, I solved it.
I followed this steps:
1- Turn Off Wi-Fi from the Wireless menu item
2- From the OS X Finder, hit Command+Shift+G and enter the following path:
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
3- Within this folder locate and select the following files:
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.apple.network.identification.plist
com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
NetworkInterfaces.plist
preferences.plist
4- Move all of these files into a folder on your Desktop called ‘wifi backups’ or something similar – we’re backing these up just in case you break something but if you regularly backup your Mac you can just delete the files instead since you could restore from Time Machine if needed.
5- Reboot the Mac
6- Turn ON WI-Fi from the wireless network menu again -
Why does my imac get a black screen when switching on
why does my imac get a black screen when turning on, and logging in is very slow.
I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these procedures don't solve the problems.
Hope this helps -
