Why does my internet keep disconnecting on my mac?

I bought a new mac this christmas, and so far the internet has been repeatedly disconnecting until I turn the wifi off and back on. I was okay the first time this happened but now it has been months. Its getting VERY annoying. How can I fix this?
(My mac is a Macbook Pro OS X Yosemite.)

How to check if there are other WiFi base stations near by
Option-Click on the WiFi icon in your menu bar -> select Open Wireless Diagnostics
Enter your Admin password when prompted.
Wireless Diagnostics -> Windows -> Utilities -> Wi-Fi Scan tab
Click [Scan Now] button in the lower right corner.
You may want to grow the window to see all the columns
The WiFi base station and channel your Mac is using will be "Bold" and all the other WiFi signals will be normal type.
You are interested in the RSSI column and the Noise column
The smaller negative value the stronger signal.  -37 is the strong signal in my house.  My nearest neighbor is -77.  In an appartment/condo complex you may have signals as strong or stronger than your signal.
The Noise signal should be a large negative value. -88 to -90's indicates a very small amount of noise.  Noise is an indication of interference.  A large negative value indicates very little noise.
Channels should not overlap.  The 2.4GHz channels should be 5 channels apart.  1, 6, and 11 are the preferred channels in countries that allow 1-11.  Some countries allow 1-13.  So you want to look for in use channels with a small negative RSSI values that are less than 5 channels away from your 2.4GHz channel.
The 5GHz channels are assigned without any overlap, so they should not be a problem.

Change of subject
Sometimes Bluetooth interferes with the 2.4GHz WiFi.  If you are using Bluetooth devices, try turning off Bluetooth on your Mac.  This is an experiment.
Microwave ovens use 2.4GHz.  If your computer or your WiFi base station is picking up microwave oven leaking, then that can cause interference (the Noise above).  The reason WIFi is allowed to use the 2.4GHz frequencies is because that band if fill with too many interfering signals, such as Microwave ovens.
2.4GHz cordless phones.  Yours or ones owned by your neighbors (assuming your neighbors are nearby, such as row homes, apartments, condos, etc... can interfere with 2.4GHz WiFi
2.4GHz baby monitors are worse than 2.4GHz cordless phones, because baby monitors run all the time.  So if you are using, or a nearby neighbor is using a 2.4GHz baby monitor, that could be a problem.
Buildings with metal framing.  Concrete with rebar, or some builders use metal studs.  These can block WiFi signals.

Why does my computer keep disconnecting from my wifi?

Some users with various Wi-Fi problems have reported that they were given the following instructions by Apple Support, sometimes with success. After completing the procedure, you'll have to recreate all your settings in the Networkpreference pane. Make sure you know how to do that before you begin. Taking screenshots of the preference pane may be helpful.
    Step 1
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 3
    Reset the PRAM.

  • Why does magic mouse keep disconnecting?

I've got an Apple Magic Mouse  that is less than one year old and it keeps disconnecting from my Mac Mini.  It just started doing it.  I've put in fresh batteries and restarted the computer.   I've got all the latest operating system software.   Nothing is out of date.   Every couple of minutes it just randomlly disconnects then reconnects and so on, over and over again.  It's only about 2 feet away from my Mac Mini.
    Anybody know what to do?
    Thanks.
    David

I thank you for your help, Ascendi, but I have no idea what you're saying.  I'm guessing I stand alone, because others do understand.  What I got from it was that the batteries don't fit snuggly, and to shove aluminum foil... somewhere.  I'm don't have a PhD in battery terminal dimensions and their terminonolgy.  But I do appreciate that you helped.
David / Flashkube2... EXACTLY!  After years and years with my wonderful white Magic Mouse, just today the exact same thing started happening, only I was losing connection every 20 seconds.  Half the time, I'd get it back.  I feared it was a Bluetooth error, or a hacker was "stealing my juice"  So I got online here, read this stuff, wiggled my batteries around (for years and years, I've only used Duracel), and for the last 10 minutes, I have kept connection with Mr. Mouse and Mr. Mac.  Keep your fingers crossed!
So if this problem arises again, I just stuff aluminum foil in there?  (I'll be a wee bit neater than "stuff").  Speak "positive terminal" and "negative terminal" and "top of the batteries" to me, because "depth of the recess" and "vernier caliper" are Chinese to me.  Does "battery recess" mean how the two batteries sit in its casing?
Maybe I just didn't have enough coffee this morning.  I'm not ususally shtooo-pid.  (don't go there!)

  • Why does my ipod keep disconnecting and connecting every half a second?

I had my iPod touch (4th gen, ios6) synced to a desktop and when I tried connecting it to my new laptop to sync it keeps connecting then disconnecting every half a second (flashing on and off) and will not connect at all. Do I need to do something with my old computer? I don't think it's something wrong with the cord because it connects to the wall just fine.

Different conductors/contacts are used for charging and dats. Thus, it still could be a bad cable.

  • Why does the wifi keep disconnecting on the Macbook Air (Bought September 2013) ?

Is this only my MacBook Air, or is it with everyones. The wifi keeps getting disconnected and i would have to switch off and then switch on the wifi in order to reconnect.

    Hi Ettedos,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing unexpected behavior on your MacBook Air.
I'd recommend starting with the Wireless Diagnostic built into Mavericks:
OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 or later
Use the Wireless Diagnostics application included with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.4 and later to identify and resolve Wi-Fi issues. For further information, please see About Wireless Diagnostics.

  • Why does my macbook keep disconnecting from my network

im currently using (borrowing) someone elses wireless internet at the moment but i dont see why my macbook is having trouble with the wireless connection from downstairs when it was working fine for the past week, what should i check for to make sure nothing is wrong??? everytime i try to connect to it, the network disappears from my list of networks, could this be due to two other computers using the network?? im rubbish at computer stuff so i need some tips!
    cheers

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has been introduced recently in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal to your MacBook.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like MacStumbler or iStumbler to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.
    Other things to try:
o Switching channels - In some cases (especially when interference is at play) switching channels on the router can improve reception weakened by various causes.
o Recycle the AirPort card - You may want to try turning your internal AirPort card off then back on if you are having access issues. This can be accomplished through the AirPort menu item, or using Internet Connect (located in the Applications folder)
o Disable any third-party wireless applications (monitors/sniffers) - Some third-party applications that manipulate or otherwise interact with the wireless connection may cause problems.

  • Why does my iPad keep disconnecting itself from my Wi-Fi

A couple of weeks ago I noticed my iPad had disconnected itself from Wi-Fi, so reconnected and thought nothing of it. The next time I turned it on, it had disconnected again (Wi-Fi was still on though) so I clicked in to settings again and back onto my network. All works fine - good - but then the NEXT time I turned it on (from sleep, not fully off) it had disconnected AGAIN.
This has now become the norm for my iPad. Constantly disconnecting itself from the network and doesn't reconnect automatically when I fire it back up.
Can anyone think what might be causing this, it's pretty annoying.
(I've tried switching it off fully and back on. No dice...)

    Hi,
Try changing your security options on your router to WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES].  You will need to log into your wireless router to change this.
It worked for me.  Before it was dropping frequently and after the change, it is still connected over a day later.

  • Why does my AIM keep disconnecting in iChat? (MacOSv10.7.5 iChatv6.0.2)

I have recently updated to Mac OS Lion now at 10.7.5 & cannot upgrade to Mavericks as my machine is just under the requirements. Ever since I have made this upgrade, my AIM accounts on iChat have been logging themselves out in about under 5 minutes. I log them back in, but then same things happpen. To note, my GCHAT & JABBER accounts stay logged in without problem.
How do I stop this from happening? I have read may of the previous reported issue & the results I have found instructions to delete the preference files com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist & com.apple.iChat.plist which i have done several times (deleting them before quitting & deleting after quit) but to no avail.
My server setting for both accounts is..
    Server: login.oscar.aol.com
    Port: 5190
This did not use to happen to me before the LION upgrade. I also use to have CHAX installed, but I have uninstalled it as I know it no longer works with 10.7 & above.
Any trick here that I am missing?

    HI,
I have Little Snitch to show me the pop ups to Allow the items for Messages (and previously iChat) when it launches.
I believe you can set different option other than Allow Forever and Until Quit.
The drop down shows me this:-
I thinks that the Until Logout is you as the Mac User login rather than the Apps login to AIM.
I have not tried using it this way.
The "Once" item at the bottom might give clearer idea if you had to allow it each time it logged in.
I am not quite sure what the Console messages is about.
The URL would most likely be the IP address that you computer is at.
About ten minutes might be Idle time  if you are not using the Keyboard or Mouse at all.
Of course this message may have nothing to do with the Network dropping out.
Something that happens regularly such as fetching Mail might be the cause.
