Why does my iPad 2 suddenly need to activate SIM, go blank ?

I have a REALLY annoying problem with my iPad 2:
Twice in about a month now, I open my smartcover, and I get the picture that says I need to connect to iTunes to activate.
When I do that, it says the SIM card has a PIN, so I need to remove that PIN code to activate the iPad, then reconnect.
What I end up doing, is removing the SIM card to even be able to get past that. So I connect the iPad to iTunes. Everything's gone, and I have to resync from the latest backup.
Both times it's happend, the iPad has just been lying around for some hours since I last used it. I open the cover, and bam.
Basically this means I can't trust my Apple product, because I simply don't know if it at some point screws me over. E.g. on a vacation, and it suddenly does that after I import all my vacation pictures from my DSLR. Or blog posts and articles I write but can't sync when on vacation (due to the insane european data traffic prices). So I almost don't dare produce anything I need, on my iPad 2.
Which is ironic, since I bought it for just that primarily: Writing, for meetings, for school work etc.
Do any of you guys have this problem, or have had it, and know of a solution ? Otherwise I'll simply have not use a SIM card with it. Which would annoy the crap out of me, since I like having a 3G connection on it.
Hoping someone can help me understand what's going on.

Do a FACTORY RESTORE...not from your back...
Make sure you DON'T allow iTunes to  back-up your Ipad before this as it will Replace your back up with the funcky New app arrangement and soo on..
Now after the Factory restore, restart iTunes and do a restore from the Back-p. AGAIN don't let iTunes do a back-up prior to this...

    This is typically a memory issue - meaning, you have too many apps running. You don't mention your device and iOS version so it's difficult to say. Try this...
    Double click the Home button and close all open apps.
    Reset your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
    Try again to see if the problem persists.

    Maybe I need to ask the question in a different way.  The iPad was working fine and then for no reason, it required a connection to iTunes.  A reset did not take care of the problem.
    Since this is the second time something like this has happened, I am concerned that it will happen again when I am in a situation where I don't have access to a computer (or Apple Store).
    What might be causing the problem and what can be done to prevent it from happening again?

    It's hard to say why, but try rebooting the device by pressing and holding the on/off and home buttons simultaneously until the screen goes blank and you see the apple logo. It should take about 10-15 seconds to reboot. See if this stops it.

    Check to make sure you don't have your restrictions turned on, which may be preventing your access to iTunes.
    Tap on the settings icon, then tap General, then check to see if you have restrictions turned to ON.  If so turn it off.

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
    Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

    Check the right and left sides of your iPad for a small hole the size of a paper clip (remove your smart cover if you have one).  If you see this, then you have the wifi + cellular model.  If you do, use a paper clip to remove the sim tray (or the sim removal tool that came with your iPad if you have it) as shown in the image below. 
    If the tray has a sim card in it, push the sim tray back in to re-seat it in the side of the iPad, then turn it on to see if the error message re-appears.  If it re-appears, take it to a Verizon store and have them give you a new sim card.
    If you have a sim tray but it is empty, you'll need to go to a Verizon store to get a sim card for it.

    The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
    To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
