In my case, after upgrading to iOS 5 I had no music or video. But plugged into iTunes I could see 5gb of 'other'
When I clicked on Music in the device I could see all my music listed. I clicked on a track and pressed play and it worked. Then looked at the phone and it had all been miraculously restored (although I am having to reinstall most of it because the artwork in most cases won't show.
It was the same with the apps. Until I downloaded a new app, none of my existing ones would work. What a wonderful experience this iPhone upgrading is turning out to be!!!

I'd say you have a better chance of not loosing anything if you connect to your home computer-- but it's not certain. Yeah, I'd imagine it's very frustrating. I'm surprised Apple allows these huge updates outside of iTunes.

If your iPhone is shutting down unexpectedly, I recommend going through these troubleshooting steps:

Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.

My ipad has a itunes icon and a charger connection but won't go to the home screen

I tried to update my iOS system on my iPad 2 yesterday and it never went through because I didn't have it connected to the charger. This morning when I tried to update again I got the same problem. The only differenc is that I was able to get to my homescreen once before the screen blacked out all execpt for the iTunes icon and the charger cord symbol. Now I cannot get any screen to appear on the iPad besides that. I have tried plugging my charger into the iPad and the symbol only goes away when I hold the power button. It reappears when I hold the power button. Is this normal for the new updating system?

YOU ARE IN RECOVERY MODE (something went wrong with update)
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

It means you have to connect your iPad to your computer and restore it as a New Device via iTunes. Next time, if you use a passcode, write the number down somewhere as there is no other option.

Why does my iphone have duplicate songs with an icon?

Recently I've noticed something on my iPhone. Maybe it's been there all along, who knows. But here's the deal: if I buy an album on iTunes for Mac, and sync my iPhone, the album on he phone looks bizarre:
As you can see, there's a duplicate of each track, with a circle icon. If I try and play this circle icon, it tells me I need to be connected to WiFi or something.
Points of note:
1. Under "Store" in the iPhone settings, I've turned off automatic downloads of everything. I found that if this was enabled, my iPhone would download new music and would get a second copy sync'd by iTunes. Fail for iTunes/iPhone recognising the same album I guess..?
2. Every so often, my iPhone is now asking me for my Apple ID password - no special reason I can see,it just pops up and asks me. This might be related.
3. I haven't purchased/turned on iTunes Match anywhere (iCloud).
I'm wondering if it's got spectacularly confused somewhere, if it thinks maybe it should be streaming this album from my Mac, or downloading it from the Store, even if it's already got a copy.
How can I make it stop? It's annoying in the extreme. Sure, it's not as bad as not having food on the table, pretty much a first world problem,but not what I'd expect from the thing. I'm happy to blow the device away and restart it as a fresh iPhone, not quite sure how to do that, but I'm open to all suggestions that might show how to fix the problem.

i wondered the same thing.
You have to go to the "Restrictions" page of your device's Settings and make sure "iTunes" is turned on.
This is why it only happened on my children's iPods and not on mine.
The reason a full restore works is that it resets all your passwords and allows everything automatically until you reset the restrictions again.

Why does my 'Artists' list in iTunes (iPad and iPhone) end at 'T'?

I've completed the transition to iTunes in the cloud (iTunes Match) and my 17,000+ songs are playing just fine from all of my devices.
However, on both my iPad and iPhone when I click the 'Artists' tab I only see artists through about the mid Ts. I can't see artists like U2, The Who or Zwan. The songs from those bands show up when I click the 'Songs' tab and search, but I can't see the bands in the Artists tab.
Is there a limit to the number of artists that the iPhone and iPad can display? I think I have around 2,000 in my iTunes collection.
I also noticed this morning that when I scroll through my artists list on my iPhone, the gray bar at the top of the list indicates that I'm in 'Z' or 'W' or '123', but only artists through Tom Petty are showing up.
Any thoughts?

Yes, it did seem to fix my problem. It was probably a combination of waiting long enough for my mobile devices to clear the iTunes Match data and also long enough for iTunes Match itself to catch up with all of the meta data changes that I had made in my main media library.
I think I ended up leaving iTunes Match turned off on my mobile devices for 24+ hours and after doing a re-start everything was fine.

Why does the iPhone drop from iTunes during Wireless Sync?

Alright, so in my bedroom I have full wifi bars, occasionally when I move to the far corner I drop one single bar on the wifi but other than that, I never have a problem. Until I try to wireless sync. Then the iPhone 4 switches back to 3G for less than a second and then goes back to wireless again (still pleanty of bars on wifi). Of course, this is just enough to stop the phone from syncing wirelessly with iTunes.
I have done speed testing and local network ping testing and all that kind of thing, there is no reason for the iPhone to drop the wifi connection. I can stream netflix or hulu at maximum quality over my local wifi. Using iSSH I can VNC into the Mac without problem and using Filez I can SFTP to the mac or use AFP and transfer files without issue. I even transferred 2 Gigs worth of files from my living room to the bedroom over the local wifi with consistant good speed.
What gives? Is this some kind of strange design flaw or what?
This ONLY happens while trying to wirelessly sync with iTunes. And after, I cannot try to sync again until I reboot my phone and restart itunes.

Have you gone to the video tab (in itunes) and selected sync movies and selected the movie that you want synced?

My iphone seems to log me into Facebook and hotmail while sitting idle at home unless I turn it off. I don't want it to do that. Others use my home computer and it bugs me that I turn on my imac to find me logged into FB and HM. Anyone?

Understood. Every single time I leave my imac I click safari drop down menu to "Reset Safari" which clears all passwords, history etc.... I know for a fact that my iphone logs me back in becasue I have tested it over and over again. If I turn off the power to my iphone and get back onto my imac None of my log in or email is ever open. I have to enter name and password.
IF,,,,, I have my iphone on and my computer is even in sleep mode or on doesn't matter... If, I go into email via iphone or check my facbook on iphone later once back at my imac my hotmail is open and so is my facebook. I usually do not even have my wifi turned on in my iphone either. I swear, I have tested it repeatedly since march when I got my first verizon iphone.
So, am I the only one who has ever had this happen?
