  • What does it mean when the iPhone says "accessory may not be supported"

My phone is not charging and I just got a new charger

It means apple blocked the chip in your charger because the software key used to handshake to check that it's a certified apple product failed and it will block you using it.
It was a path apple decided to release with ios7 that caused millions of cables and chargers to fail. They had millions of complaints about it too but they went down the 'nothing's wrong, I've never seen that problem before' path 'if you have a certified product it should work' ... Response. Making it sound like not having a certified product is is some way shape or form 'illegal' but it's not.
We have been phasing out thousands of apple products because of this in favour of standardised usb connection ports such as those on the samsung, htc, sony, and Nokia.
Your options are go buy another cable or charger from apple till you get one that works or switch phones. There is a third method that involved modifying the software to stop it but it's beyond most people and if you have to ask on these forums about it you probably don't have the time or skill to do it. Also they remove and block anyone who talks about it or how to do it so that's all I will say

  • What do I do when it says accessory may not be supported

I've had this charger for a while like 3 weeks or so and now the phone is saying it's not supported.

The cable and if so, the Apple cable included with the iPhone or 3rd party cable?

  • IPhone 5 - "this accessory may not be supported"

I’m having charging issues with my original iPhone 5. I’m getting a message saying “this accessory may not be supported” when you plug your phone in. I am using a new cable/adapter made by apple (not a third party cable), I’ve clean what I could out of the charging port, I have reset my phone, and the battery is totally fine. I’ll leave my phone charging at night and it goes up to 50% if that. My guess is there’s an issue with iOS7. Went to the apple store twice and since my phone was over two years, they couldnt do anything about it. This is my last and only option I guess. Please help!

I have the same problem.  After I upgraded to IOS 7, my iphone 5 keeps giving the message that this accessory may not be supported while I am using the phone's original charger and it stops charging.  it also takes much longer to charge it!  I bought another apple charger thinking there is a problem with my charger cable but I have the same problem!  I am taking my phone to the apple store this weekend!  Charging has become a difficult task now as I can only charge it through a computer!!!  and sometimes even that doesn't work.....

  • My iPhone4 gives the message This accessory may not be supported

Phone has been working perfectly until three days ago, while charging the message 'This accessory may not be supported' appeared after two minutes and it then stops charging.  I have tried two different Apple chargers both into mains socket and into the computer USB, I've also put it on the Sony socking station, nothing works.  It has the latest Update, IOS 7.1.2.
Any information would be appreciated (if I am in the wrong 'Community' please advise which one would be better suited).
    Thanks.

We came to the conclusion that the charger part was completely broken so assuming we had nothing to lose we scrubbed it with a toothbrush hard and now it works almost normally, warning comes up occasionally still but at least we can charge it fully, even though it takes it bit of babysitting.  For Info : Friend took my screen shot of the warning to an Apple Shop and they were quite arrogant stating that they had no idea what the warning was for (obviously Apple do as they have created the warning) and insisted they couldn't give any advice without seeing the phone; not the best customer service!

  • Apple iPhone 5 cable saying "this accessory may not be supported"?

Using the Apple Lighting cable I specifically purchased off the Apple site with my Apple iPhone 5 (IOS 8..1.2) so that I would have at least one charge cable that would work with my computer and my phone. But at last I have been mistaken. Everything I plug my phone in with the Apple cable it informs he that "this accessory may not be supported"? Does anyone know a solution to this problem. I know i've emailed Apple about this once before and magically it started working for that night but its yet to wok since with my computer. I know the cable works just fine as I use it ever day to charge my phone with my wall adapter so I know the cable itself must not be the problem.

    Hey A.R.R,
If you are having an issue with an alert saying that the cable is not supported for use with your iPhone, I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
If you can’t charge your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
    Specifically -
    If you see an alert
When you plug in your device, you might see one of these alerts:
“This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iPhone.”
“This accessory is not supported by this device.”
If you see one of these alerts, unplug your device try and these steps:
Look at the connector at the bottom of your device and make sure it’s free of debris, then reconnect the USB cable.
If you still see an alert, try a different USB cable or charger.

If your device still doesn't charge or you still see an alert after trying the steps above, contact Apple Support.
    Be well,

why does my itunes say "Itunes could not connect to the iphone because the device timed out"? I just want to sync my iphone with my itunes. please help

If you are using a USB hub, don't. Connect directly to the computer. Disconnect all other USB devices except for keyboard and mouse.

  • HT3887 why does my iPhone say device not supported when connecting to my make even after it has successfully paired?

why does my iphone say device not supported when connecting to my mac pro, even though it has already succesfuly paired? I also use a wirless bluetooth keyboard and mouse on the computer successfully.
Also when I turn Bluetooth on on the phone the devices cog never stops turning (forever serching for a device)

iTunes automatically syncs voice memos to your iTunes library when you connect iPhone to your computer.
It couldn't be much easier than that as you don't actually have to do anything more than normal.
This lets you listen to voice memos on your computer and provides a backup if you delete them from iPhone.
Voice memos are synced to the Voice Memos playlist. iTunes creates the playlist if it doesn’t exist. When you sync voice memos to iTunes, they remain in the Voice Memos application until you delete them. If you delete a voice memo on iPhone, it isn’t deleted from the Voice Memos playlist in iTunes. However, if you delete a voice memo from iTunes, it is deleted from iPhone the next time you sync with iTunes.
USB syncing is far faster than Bluetooth.

  • My iPod touch 5th gen isn't charging and when I plug my working charger in that I've always used a message pops up that says "This accessory may not be supported". So can I send it in for a new one if I have a warranty?

For Christmas, my older sister got me a portable charger for my iPod. I'm not sure if it was capable with apple products, but it charged my iPod when I used it. My brother came upstairs and took my portable charger from me, so I went to go use my wall charger. The wall charger I have has always worked and it charges my mom's iPhone, so the problem I have isn't my charger. After I plugged my iPod in my charger, a message popped up saying "This accessory may not be supported". I was confused because this never has happened before, so I tried my portable charger after I got the message. The portable charger didn't charge my iPod anymore apparently after I tried my charger. All this happened the day after Christmas, so it's almost been a month without my iPod charging properly. My iPod does charge, but only when I plug it in halfway and am about to turn it all the way off. The only way I get it to charge is when I plug it in real fast as soon as I turn my iPod completely off. I've also restarted my iPod, cleaned out the charging area, asked people at stores that work with technology, and etc, so if someone could help me resolve this problem that would be legit because I use my iPod on a daily basis.

That message is usually due to a bad cable.

  • IPhone 4 - Charging issues including "This accessory may not be supported."

So for the past couple of weeks, on and off, my iPhone 4 (2 years old) has been having intermittent charging issues. I have gone through four charging cords, all from Apple, and two charging blocks, both from Apple - none of these change/resolve the issue.
I had an online chat through Apple with someone a week ago, and she suggested resetting my settings only (resetting the entire phone was my husband's idea) - resetting the phone entirely did not resolve the issue, and resetting the settings (and only the settings) works for maybe 1-2 days maximum. Any of the following things happen when plugging in the phone to charge:
    1) The phone charges normally (very rare anymore, happens more often if I reset the settings on the phone first then put everything back the way I want it)
    2) The phone charges for maybe two seconds, then a message pops up that says "This accessory may not be supported." (8/10 times this happens, can usually get it to charge normally if I unplug and replug a bunch of times)
    3) The phone makes the noise/vibrates like it is charging, but the battery percentage will go down over time. (rare, but does happen)
An Apple store visit is not exactly...possible? I live an hour and a half away from my closest one, and the location is not easy to get to (cross a bridge, pay $13 toll, $13 to get back over to go home, and that's just the way there and back...forget finding the place). I have cleaned out the phone at the charging port more times than I can count. My husband seems to think it is a battery issue...thoughts?

iOS 7 will give errors on non Apple certified peripherals.  So make sure you only use Apple certified products. Did you backup the phone and then RESTORE AS NEW (not reset)? Try doing that by plugging the phone to iTunes on a computer. See if that helps. If it solves the problem, there could have been corrupted software on you phone. If not, it could be a hardware issue (including the battery), in which case you would need to go to a Apple Store or authorized service provider.

  • IPhone 6 Cable/Plug "Accessory May not Be Supported"

So, I recently bought the iPhone 6 (brand new at Best Buy) and everything was fine for two weeks. I upgraded to the latest iOS and it was all fine after that, too. But in the last week or so, when I try to charge my phone (using the cable and wall plug that came with the phone) I get the message "This Accessory May not Be Supported." It's an Apple brand cable and plug, so that's pretty weird.
It was happening intermittently and now it happens almost all of the time. Turning it off and powering back up does not fix the problem, nor is the cable visibly broken and there is no debris in port of the phone. It also eventually produces the error if I connect it to my laptop (MacBook Pro). It'll charge it for a bit but eventually the error will happen again.
I've seen in some other forums that this is happening to other people. Apple's online support was entirely unhelpful and does not seem to understand the problem. All the chat room person could do was to send me to the an "article online," but that does not address the issue at all.
I just made a Genuis Bar appointment. I suspect I need to have the phone or cables replaced, but I think this is an issue with 8.1.2, frankly. It worries me to replace any hardware, because the problem isn't automatic. It crept up slowly and just got worse over time.
I guess I'm just hoping Apple is reading these things and it taking the problem into consideration so that an update can be created to fix the problem.

I have got the same problem! I have tried a lot of different chargers and connectors but none of them works when my Iphone6 is on. When I turn my iphone off while the charger is connected, the iphone charges! I turn my Iphone off when I go to sleep and turn it back on the next morning, my phone is totally charged! So I think the chargers don't give enough power to charge while my iphone is on?! I'm going back to the shop tomorrow. The iphone is just 4 weeks old and the problem was there from the beginning! I have tried a hard reset and other stuff but the problem keeps coming up. After the hard reset I was able to charge my iphone normal once. I hope they can fix it fast! Sorry I can't help you!
