Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable?

Why does my iPhoto red eye reduction tool only give me blue or black blobs in the eyeballs that look completely unacceptable? Automatic mode makes blue blobs that cover iris and even eyelid! Manual mode gives black dots, not at all hte shape of a oerson's iris as seen in a picture.

And again the answer is simply
THere is no fix - that is the way it works - you can post as many times as you want but it will not change the fact that that is the way that iPhoto works
No fix
No work around
It is what it is - nothing more - nothing less

Does anyone know why- when I import a one minute video project into Final Cut X from I Movie the resolution that looked alright full screen in I Movie instantly becomes worst on full screen in Final Cut X...but clear again when I stop it to still position?

I'm new to video editing but I think I recall seeing an option in FCPX which lets you choose the video quality for the preview window. I think the window reduces the quality when playing back for performance reasons and so perhaps that is why it seems to have less quality when moved over to FCPX? Just a possibility, I'm sure one of the more experienced users can confirm or deny this theory.

  • Feature desired for Red Eye Reduction

Currently the Red Eye Reduction tool only allows for darkening the pupil. The effect is somewhat unnatural, particularly when the person has blue or hazel eyes. Is there a plug-in for this tool that enables the user to select the destination eye color?

I finally tried it out, and it does let you pick a color manually. Just load the action, select a foreground color, marquee the iris and run the action.  I tried it out on the extreme example on the website (really huge glowing red eyes).  You see the results in the right-hand picture below.  I used a bright blue on the eye at the left (which resulted in a purple color) and a green on the eye at the right.  The results would possibly look more realistic had I used different shades of color and had I been more careful about selecting the iris.
In any case, the results with Photoshop's redeye tool (photo on the left) were pretty realistic looking without any tampering.  If you find a good solution, please post it here!

    Stephanie,
    Welcome to the Apple Discuccions.
The first and easiest fix to try is to delete the iPhoto preference file. Close iPhoto. In the Finder, look inside Home/Library/Preferences. Find a file named com.apple.iPhoto.plist and drag it to the Trash. Launch iPhoto. It will create a new pref file, and your preferences will be reset to their defaults. Change them back to your liking. Try to edit a photo and see if it sticks now. If not, look to see if the file is locked.
Photos, Get Info brings up the iPhoto info. You need the Finder's Info. Right-click on the photo's thumbnail from within iPhoto and select "Show File" from the pop-up menu. A Finder window should then open up with the photo already selected. Type Command-I (or click the "More Info..." button below the thumbnail in column view) to bring up the Finder's info about that file.
The top section of the info window is called General. The last thing in that section is a little box by the word Locked. If there's an x in the box, click to remove it. You can also look at the bottom of the Info box, at the section called Ownership & Permissions. Next to "You can" it should say "Read & Write." Open the Details section below that to see who has Ownership of the file.

  • Has red eye reduction improved in iPhoto 8.0

Is red eye reduction any better in iPhoto '08 than it was in previous versions?
I'm currently using iPhoto 6, and when I use red eye reduction it often makes a big gray splotch over the whole eye, including the eyelids! It's just very inaccurate and make the pictures look almost worse than they did with the red eye.
Is iPhoto '08 any better at this, or should I turn to another tool like Photoshop Elements? Is there any freeware that would do it?

The only freeware that I know of that might do the job as well as Photoshop or Photoshop Elements is Gimp. It's an open source application that is much like Photoshop but requires installing Apple's Xcode 11 (which is also free). I've not used it but it's touted as being much like Photoshop.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Aperture makes eye purple with Red Eye Correction tool. Why? Bug?

    http://www.hvmediasolutions.com/images/picture1.png
As you can see with the above picture, Aperture does not do red eye well. iPhoto gets it right, actually as well as Photoshop CS4.
Any suggestions? Or is this a bug?
And yes I could use Photoshop every time, but I am trying to do as much as I can in Aperture.
    Thanks,
    Ed

I have an old camera, Nikon Cool Pix 3100 and save my photos to .jpg. Yes I know, time to upgrade.
    I capture straight into Aperture.
The thing that bugs me, iPhoto 08 gets it right, better than Photoshop. Aperture, since version 1, has always given me purple red eye cast on both Intel and Power PC Mac Book Pro's. Since iPhoto can get it right, Aperture should be able to.
Currently I use Pixelmator and desaturate with the brush tool for the best results.
By the way Lightroom 2 desaturates the eye to a light grey with it's red eye tool.
Different results with 4 different applications. I would love to just use one.

  • Red eye reduction not always working

    Hi.
On some pictures, I'm having trouble with the red eye reduction. On a few pictures, it worked just fine.
I'm having the most trouble with cats. The eyes aren't red, but bright yellow and nothing seems to happen when I try to use the tool.
Anyone else seeing this? Or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Lennart - good to see you're asking a question in this forum - you're usually the helper (in iMovie)
I've had the same problem with red eye reduction. It generally only works when eyes are red - yellow eyes don't respond to the correction tool (humans and cats). My workaround is to use the clone stamp in Photoshop Elements. Option click on part of an eye that is the right colour (usually dark) then clone to the eye needing correction. With patience and care, usually the eye can be suitably fixed. Zoom in when performing the correction.
In iPhoto preferences you can set Elements (or any editing program) to open automatically when double clicking a photo in iPhoto.
    Hope this helps Lennart.

  • Red Eye reduction not working

    Iphoto 11
Red eye reduction does not work, auto is not selectable and circling eye and clikcingh does do anything.
I have trashed the plist file, repaired permissions and rebuilt the iphoto database. Nothing fixed the problem.
ANy other ideas I can try ?
all software updates applied , 10.7.3

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Red-eye reduction problem

When I use the red eye reduction feature, suddenly it is putting the "fix" on the photo, not on the eye where I click to remove it. Is this a problem anyone else has had and can it fixed? I use iphoto 6.0.4.
    Thanks,
    Ardelle

    Ardelle,
There is a hidden feature that allows you to resize and place the red-eye tool. It works with the Retouch tool, as well.
    Type Caps lockControl9
    Undo caps lock
Click on Retouch or the Red-Eye Removal tool.
The tab key will toggle between cursor types: a cross or a circle for Red-Eye removal tool, and between darken and lighten in the Retouch tool.
The \[ and \] keys decrease or increase the size accordingly.
NOTE: Using the { and } keys will will change the value next to the circle and that represents the degree of change or intensity that the Retouch tool imparts on each pass. To get a lighter pupil with the red-eye tool, Shift-Click inside the circular cursor.
Thanks to Old Toad for posting that tip.
    Regards.

  • Where is the red eye correction tool now?

Can't find it anywhere.  Why did they remove it? (iphone 6)

Can't find it anywhere.  Why did they remove it? (iphone 6)
In the Photos.app.  When you select a photo and click "edit", there is an eye icon at the upper border of the panel. That is the "red eye" correction tool.

  • Red Eye removal tool bug

    Hi everybody,
I have a big problem using the red eye removal tool:
When trying to select the area around the eye to correct, LR randomly creates a selection rectangle of a different size and at a different location.
Does anyone have the same problem?
    Example:
+ I activate the red eye removal tool
+ I drag the cursor to create a selection around the red eye to correct, taking care to have the center of the rectangle more or less in the red area of the eye
    + Release the mouse button
+ the selection rectangle disappears for a split second and appears again at a different location, for example around the eye brow or somewhere under the eye in a 20-30 times smaller size than what I selected.
Is this a failed attempt of artificial intelligence to properly recognize the area to correct or simply a bug?
BTW. the file in question is a JPG, with 2 people, red eye correction worked fine on 3 of the eyes (selection rectangle stayed where I created it) and fails on every attempt on the fourth (LR restarted and so on).

The red eye tool works by selecting the whole eye not just the pupil. If it still does not work try lightening or darkening the image to gaiain some more colour. If that does not work you can clone form one of the eyes that has worked.
    Hope this helps you out.........

  • IiPhoto 11 Red-eye Reduction too black

    Hey there!
I recently bought a new iMac and when I transferred my stuff over from my precious Mac, it told me I had to update to iPhoto 11.
I did that, but I prefer my previous version of iPhoto (?08)...
The red-eye reduction never seems to have the auto red-eye correct box checked, and when I do it manually, the pupils end up so black, they look ridiculous; they look fake in the context of the other colours and intensities , and kinda spooky!!
I actually hate it now, and want my old version of iPhoto back
Is there some way I can adjust the intensity of the replacement pupil colour?
Or can you tell me how to get the auto box checked??
    Thanks.
    Nic.

  • Red eye reduction won't save corrections

I have tried numerous to save changes of red eye reduction on a certain photo.
The correction is made but when I click the "Done" button the change is not saved and the original photo with red eye remains. It seems to work fine with all other photos here to fore.
    What is the problem?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
This could be a file permissions issue. Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

Why does my iphoto seem to get "stuck" a lot of the times when I try to exit it to the point where I have to "force quit" it and how do I fix the problem that causes it?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
does this only happen when you try to quit iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
