Why does my iPod Classic self-eject with Windows 7?

I've been having a complete nightmare with my iPod Classic 160GB. When I plug it into the USB, iTunes doesn't recognise it and, when I watch the screen, it shows the "Connected" screen then ejects itself and disconnects! Anyone know why and what I do to be able to use my iPod? BTW I'm running Windows 7 - which updates itself automatically.
I've uninstalled everything Apple, restarted and reinstalled iTunes - but nothing seems to work. HELP!!

Glad to hear its working properly.
Just to clarify, "self-ejecting" is not what I was describing.  If you use automatic syncing and disk use is NOT enabled, iTunes unmounts the iPod's "disk" most of the time, and mounts it ONLY when syncing is taking place.  So, looking at the disk from Windows (the "system"), it will be mounted when iTunes is syncing, but otherwise unmounted.  So what you described originally, with the iPod's screen initially showing "Connected" and then not connected a short time later makes sense, because the system was mounting the iPod disk to sync and then unmounting it after syncing was done.
However, in the iTunes window, the iPod should continue to appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES, whether the iPod's disk is currently mounted or not.  It appears in iTunes when you connect the iPod and should remain there until you eject (or disconnect) the iPod.  If the iPod was disappearing from the iTunes window by itself, there was something wrong.  And it sounds like it's been corrected with your actions.

why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

It's not a "fix," actually.  If that is a 4th gen iPod connected using USB, you need to do what it says and plug it in to the white square power adapter that originally came with those models.  Later Apple power adapters should work; third-party adapters may or may not work.  It has something to do with voltage.  The USB connection to computer does not provide the required voltage (although it's obviously fine for normal syncing and charging).
If that iPod is connected to a FireWire port, it apparently provides the required voltage, because that step does not come up during the Restore.  That model was a transition between iPod connecting to FireWire and connecting to USB.  Earlier models required FireWire.  Later models only used USB.
If you don't have an adapter, and there is an Apple Store nearby, I guess you could take it to the store's Genius Bar.  I'm sure they have a power adapter there, to complete the Restore.  (Just don't let them re-do the Restore on a Mac, if you use a Windows PC. Different storage formatting.)

The battery and/or charging circuit may be faulty. Reset the device and try again having let it cool down first.

  • Why does my ipod classic stop playing after a few songs?

why does my ipod classic stop playing after just a few songs?

is your battery charged?  How many songs do you have on the playlist (if you are playing a  playlist when it stops)?   I know that when the earbud wires are accidentally disconnected from the ipod body, the music stops automatically.

  • Why does my ipod classic shut off unexpectedly

Why does my ipod classic (80 gb) shut off unexpectedly?  This happens often and more so when the earphone (any earphone) moves.  The only time it does not shut off is when my ipod is lying flat on a table.

    Hey madelinefrommiami,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like it may be a hardware issue if moving the earphone shuts off the iPod. A frustrating situation for sure. Take a look at this page for information on available service options.

  • HT2305 Problem  with syncing Ipod classic in Itunes with Windows 8

I am having problems getting my Ipod classic to sync with Itunes.  Is 2.0.4 the current firmware for me to use with my Ipod using Windows 8?  If not, please let me know what firmware I need to use.  Thank you.

    Hey catwoman001,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far! iPod software version 2.0.5 is available for the iPod classic 160GB (Late 2009). If this is your model, you may want to update the iPod. If you are having issues with your iPod, the following troubleshooting assistant may help:

  • Why does my iPod Classic keep pausing while playing music in a dock?

Hi, can anyone help with this? I am playing music through the iPod Classic on a Philips docking speaker and every few minutes it pauses. This is so maddening, what can I do to stop it. Thanks

From my own experience recently, I would suspect that the Philips dock is faulty. However, that won't get you very far, so as a method for narrowing down the problem, ask yourself the following:
Has the iPod/Philips dock combination ever worked?
How are you connecting the iPod with the dock? Is it the docking connector, a cable, bluetooth?
How long does it work before it pauses (time it)? Is it the same time each attempt?
Can you try the iPod with a friend's dock, or can you try the dock with another iPod? What happens?

  • Why does my iPod Classic keep trying to sync items from my iTunes library that are no longer there?

I have an iPod classic, 160GB model, that keeps trying to sync items that are no longer in my iTunes library, is there a way to stop it from doing this? My iTunes library is on my MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB.

Does your iPod clears  your iTunes library or the music in the iPod itself disappears, when your sync the iPod?

  • Why does my ipod classic keep freezing my itunes account

so i have had my ipod classic for a few years not and i love it. but lately i cannot plug it into itunes without it freezing my itunes all up. i have tried resetting it, ive re downloaded itunes and everything i try doesnt work. i dont know what to do. i really dont want to have to go buy a new one.

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

If necessary, post the resultings numbers and we can verify what the next steps to take.

  • Why does my ipod classic (80gb) connect for a few seconds then disconnect?

I have a ipod classic 80gb, granted its old, but it has a big memory so I can store my whole collection. Anyway, when I connect it to my PC (with windows 8.1) it will connect for a few seconds then disconnect. It will sometimes start to sync, but then disconnect after a few seconds. My computer is pretty new, Acer Aspire V5. I have tried reinstalling itunes, a new cable to connect it, different usb ports(2) and with and without the pc plugged into the mains, which is when it starts to sync for a brief second. Has anyone else had the same problem??

The S.I. prefix Giga is used to mean both 1000x1000x1000 and 1024x1024x1024. Computer software typically uses the second version, but using the first number makes the same number of bytes appear bigger when expressed as Gb, so is favoured by hard drive manufactures.
    80Gb10 = 74.3Gb2
It's a bit like specifying a quantity in gallons without saying whether they are US or Imperial gallons - everybody gets the same volume but one number will be bigger than the other. I could offer you a tank with 10 Imperial gallons of fuel in it - but if I tell you it's 12 US gallons it sounds like you're getting more for your money.
Once the total size of your library exceeds the capacity of your device all you need to do is create some size limited playlists to determine what goes on the device. Don't sync all movies, sync one or two that you plan to watch soon. Likewise with TV Shows. Limit podcasts to unplayed episodes and finally create a music subset. What worked for me for some time was a smart playlist called Steve's Tunes defined as Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Exclude where Exclude was regular playlist that I would manually add to until Steve's Tunes was small enough to fit. These days I run an iPhone and have a number of smart playlists with ? Gb of most played, ? Gb of highly rated, ? Gb of recently added, ? Gb of essentials, ? Gb of unplayed etc. Each time I sync I get slightly updated selection without having to put any extra effort in.

  • Why does my ipod no longer work with my alpine car stereo

my ipod connects directly to my alpine car stereo and up til now it has worked great. i recently synced my ipod to my computer and i think it updated the software on my ipod and now my ipod no longer works with my alpine stereo. what is up? did apple change something that would make my ipod no longer compatible with my car stereo? if so, what do i do? i have about $1000 invested in my car stereo and ipod specifically for car use. this is a serious issue for me! i just want my ipod to work like it did…
i just connected my friends ipod and it works fine. he has version 1.1.1 software on his. i have version 2.3 on mine. since my ipod works fine by itself i’m assuming that the incompatibility between my ipod and my alpine is due to the software update.
here again, what do i do? how can i get an older version of software back on to my ipod?
    ipod v.2.3   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

what kind of connection do you have? do you use the ipod 30 pin cable that connects directly to the head unit? it so, maybe you could get help on the alpine site, or a similar site?it could just be a bad connection. you may just have to go oldschool and use rca cables and plug those in...

  • Why does my iPod Classic keep connecting THEN disconnecting immediately?

Here's the deal, I bought my iPod Classic used, and is the 160GB version in "space gray".
I connect my iPod Classic, and immediately it disconnects itself right away(!!). I would have searched a question, but let's face it, all the other info is now out-dated. So please, help!

  • Why does my iPod classic turn off?

I've had my iPod classic for about five years now and about two months ago it started to act weird. Whenever I would press next too much I notice the battery depleting to almost the red zone, but I fully charged it that day. Before all of this happened I noticed that my iPod would always ask to be restored. Now, it seems to have gotten a lost worse. Before I could listen to my iPod classic for at least a whole day without needing a charge, but now I can't even do that anymore. I'd be lucky if I could listen to a whole album. I would love to try and buy a new iPod classic, but I'm a college student and broke so I really can't afford one. So any help would be great. Thank you!

You most likely have activated the sleep timer.
    Setting the Sleep Timer
You can set iPod to turn off automatically after playing music or a slideshow for a
    specific period of time.
    To set the sleep timer:
1 Choose Extras > Clock and then choose a clock.
2 Choose Sleep Timer and choose how long you want iPod to play.
When you set the sleep timer, a clock icon and the number of minutes left until iPod
turns off appear in the Now Playing screen on iPod.

  • HELP! Ipod classic not working with Windows 8

I have an Apple classic Ipod.  I just had to purchase a new PC.  It came with Windows 8 operating system.  When I plug in my classic ipod to this new computer it appears in itunes and you can see the songs that are on it but that is all.  I can no longer select one of them and play it on the ipod through the computer nor can I select or deselect songs on the computer to make a new playlist, nor do my new song purchases on itunes download to the ipod.  Instead they are on the cloud and unbeknownst to me they appeared on my Ipad.  I don't listen to music on my ipad so that doesn't do me any good.  I want them on my ipod.  Can anyone out there tell me what I need to do to make my classic IPOD work on this new computer or am I SOL?
    Thanks.

    Hello Ethan
I am a bit worried since using Ospprearm.exe for office in my 64-bit version of Windows
8 original version apparently changes my CMID will it affect my Windows Profile adversely as well or only office? I am told this rearms
    does "the following tasks:
Resets the grace timer to 30 days.
Freezes the grace timer until either an Office application is run, or the ospp.vbs script is run.
Resets the client computer ID (CMID). This is important because the KMS host uses the CMID to determine the number of unique clients. To check the CMID, use the command ospp.vbs
/dcmid. For more information about ospp.vbs, see The ospp.vbs script.
Note: If you run this command on either Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, it only returns to CMID for Windows,
not Office. To see the CMID for Office 2013, look for event 12288 in the Application Event log..."
Your clarification will be deeply appreciated thanks!!!
