Why does my ipod classic shut off unexpectedly

Why does my ipod classic (80 gb) shut off unexpectedly?  This happens often and more so when the earphone (any earphone) moves.  The only time it does not shut off is when my ipod is lying flat on a table.

Hey madelinefrommiami,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
After reviewing your post, it sounds like it may be a hardware issue if moving the earphone shuts off the iPod. A frustrating situation for sure. Take a look at this page for information on available service options.

  • Why does my iPod nano shut off randomly? I just bought it. After about a minute of music, it shuts off.

I just bought my wife an iPod nano. Went through the set up and then updated the iPod through iTunes. Now, after about a minute of music (with two different sets of headphones) it simply shuts off. As if it's in power convseration mode. But I can't find a setting to prevent this. Very frustrating for having JUST bought this.

If you have not already, do a Reset following this procedure.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
A Reset just restarts the iPod.  It is not erased.
If that does not help, the most likely fix for your problem would be a Restore.  This WILL erase the iPod, re-install its softare, and set it to default settings.  To do it, select the iPod in the iTune sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, go to the Summary tab.  The button for doing a Restore is there.
For anything that is currently on your computer (such as songs and pictures) that were synced to the iPod, you can just re-sync them.  That should not take too long, even if you do it manually (without using automatic syncing).
For anything that is only on the iPod (not on your computer), they will be lost if you do a Restore.  But that was a known risk.  After all, your iPod could be lost or stolen (or seriously damaged), and those items would be lost.
If those items are songs you purchased from the iTunes Store, you can re-download them (at no cost) on the iTunes Store Purchased screen.
or even be recognized by my computer when it is like this. It just sits there.
If you are having a problem getting the iPod to be recognized by iTunes, which is necessary to do a Restore, try this...  Set the iPod to Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
Then, see if iTunes will recognize it when connected.  Also, if it is recognized more reliably in Disk Mode, before doing a Restore, you can try using a third-party method or utility to transfer song files off the iPod to your computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.

  • Why does my iPod classic turn off?

I've had my iPod classic for about five years now and about two months ago it started to act weird. Whenever I would press next too much I notice the battery depleting to almost the red zone, but I fully charged it that day. Before all of this happened I noticed that my iPod would always ask to be restored. Now, it seems to have gotten a lost worse. Before I could listen to my iPod classic for at least a whole day without needing a charge, but now I can't even do that anymore. I'd be lucky if I could listen to a whole album. I would love to try and buy a new iPod classic, but I'm a college student and broke so I really can't afford one. So any help would be great. Thank you!

You most likely have activated the sleep timer.
    Setting the Sleep Timer
You can set iPod to turn off automatically after playing music or a slideshow for a
    specific period of time.
    To set the sleep timer:
1 Choose Extras > Clock and then choose a clock.
2 Choose Sleep Timer and choose how long you want iPod to play.
When you set the sleep timer, a clock icon and the number of minutes left until iPod
turns off appear in the Now Playing screen on iPod.

  • Why does my ipod nano shut off after taken out of charger

Whenever I take out my iPod Nano Generation 6, out of the charger cord, it works until I press the power button, and stays in sleep mode. Even after holding the power button, it won't turn back on.

This used to happen once in a while with my ipod classic.  You need to "reset" the ipod.  For the 6th Gen. Nano, try holding down the sleep/wake button and the volume down button simultaneously, for about 8-10 seconds, or until the apple logo appears.  You can also see the info here: support.apple.com/kb/HT1320

  • HT1320 why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

why does my iPod classic freeze up when i plug it in to my computer

It's not a "fix," actually.  If that is a 4th gen iPod connected using USB, you need to do what it says and plug it in to the white square power adapter that originally came with those models.  Later Apple power adapters should work; third-party adapters may or may not work.  It has something to do with voltage.  The USB connection to computer does not provide the required voltage (although it's obviously fine for normal syncing and charging).
If that iPod is connected to a FireWire port, it apparently provides the required voltage, because that step does not come up during the Restore.  That model was a transition between iPod connecting to FireWire and connecting to USB.  Earlier models required FireWire.  Later models only used USB.
If you don't have an adapter, and there is an Apple Store nearby, I guess you could take it to the store's Genius Bar.  I'm sure they have a power adapter there, to complete the Restore.  (Just don't let them re-do the Restore on a Mac, if you use a Windows PC. Different storage formatting.)

  • Why does my ipod classic stop playing after a few songs?

why does my ipod classic stop playing after just a few songs?

is your battery charged?  How many songs do you have on the playlist (if you are playing a  playlist when it stops)?   I know that when the earbud wires are accidentally disconnected from the ipod body, the music stops automatically.

  • Why does my ipod keep turning off

Why does my ipod keep turing off?  It works for a few minutes and then turns off automatically.

If still within warranty, have an apple service center check your ipod or request for replacement. cheers!

Why does my ipod randomly turn off after 5-10 minutes of use?  Is the battery defective?

I figured it out.  Headphones were not plugged all the way in.  This support community is awesome.  Thanks everyone.

  • TS3694 Why does my ipod keeps powering off, and when I turned if on, I have to press down the power button and the screen button at the same time ???

Why does my ipod keeps powering off, when I have to turn it on ... I have to press on the power button and the screen button at the same time ??? over and over again. I just got this in December 2011 as a gift.

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

    Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Why does my iPod keep turning off by itself

why does my ipod touch keep turning off by itself?

Is it running hot? There are thermal limits that will shut it down.
As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Why does my ipod frequently shuts itself off?

My ipod classic keeps turning off while I'm listening to it and I think maybe it has a virus.  What should I do?

There are no known viruses for the iPod Classic. When it shuts off, are you able to start it back up again without any problems or do you have to connect it to iTunes or an external power source to let it charge?
Have you worked through any of the usual 5 R's of troubleshooting yet to rule out the possibility of a software glitch or corrupted data?
