Why does my laptop keep randomly shutting down?

My laptop for the 2nd time has shut down without warning. The battery is not empty and when I charge it it says it is full. Help

Yea. Apple Just released a new update to the SMC on MacBook Pro w/Retina. Im not sure what you compter model was, but it could likely be a overheating problem. Even if you computer is not hot to the touch, the SMC may think that your computer was overheating. So yea.. Just reset your SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Follow the onscreen instructions and every thing should correct itself. If you still have trouble create another post here and we can help you out!

  • Why does my macbook pro randomly shut down?

Currently I'm running a MacBook Pro from 2008 I believe.  It has a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM.  Lately it has developed a habit of shutting down at random times, usually while I'm in the middle of doing something.  I've had it shut down white typing documents in Word, working on spreadsheets in Excel, using Google Chrome, and playing various games.  After it shuts down it always boots right back into the program it was running at the time it decided to shut down.  I've also noticed that the fans seem to run almost all the time, and even though I recently replaced the battery it seems to drain in about 30 minutes.  The Apple Hardware test software that came with the machine returns no errors, Disk utility says my hard drive is fine, and no programs seem to be taking up the majority of the processing time.  Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for fixing the shutdown issue?

The third-party system modification "ScreenFlow" may be contributing to your problem. I suggest you back up all data, then uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. Reboot and see whether there's any improvement.

  • Why is my macbook pro randomly shutting down and restarting?

My macbook pro is randomly shutting down and restarting. It started a couple days ago and seems to happen completely randomly. I did a extended hardware test and no problems were found. I reset the SMC and that didn’t work. Battery is charged and I don’t think its overheating. Im using Mavericks 10.9.1. Someone please help because I can’t even use my mac for anything lately and its really annoying.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • Firefox keeps randomly shutting down

Recently, I got a new laptop: windows 8. I downloaded firefox because that's the browser I'm accustomed to and I've never had any problem with it before. But now for some reason, I'll be scrolling through the internet, either doing something or doing nothing at all. I could be watching a video or reading an article it doesn't matter. But my browser will just shut down, as if I just clicked the X in the top right corner...but I didn't. There's no hang up. It just shuts down. And then I have to re-open the browser and that alert comes up saying that something happened and it wants to restart the tabs I had open. I've tried everything suggested on the crash suggestion page and nothing has worked. I've reinstalled firefox twice and nothing worked. This is just really annoying, I've lost important work done on the internet. Can someone please fix it?

  • Why does ipod screen flicker and shut down?Possibly need new battery?

Ipod screen flickers, but music still plays. Then it will shuy down. I ahve restored it , but still does this. My 9 year old lives on this ipod, he is going through withdrawal now!  Possibly new battery? Thanks

Might as well be a hardware defect, especially if you can still listen to music after the screen shuts down.
To make sure it is not the software, set it up as new device, without using the latest backup afterwards.

  • Why does my intel iMac not shut down properly?

On Shutdown, the screen goes black, appears to be shut down, but start button will not start unless you hold it in for several seconds. After machine boots messages says not shut down properly. Does this everytime. Has done it since it was new a year ago. the screen is black, but the button will not start the machine unless you hold it down, then you get the message. Have never seen anything like this. It is as if the machine thinks it is still running.

I'm not sure that a normal shutdown followed by turning off a power strip will reset the SMC. Power strips just switch off the "hot" leg of the power but do not interrupt the "cold" (neutral) leg or the "earth" (ground) connections. It may be that the SMC senses the cold-to-ground path or something like that to do a reset.
It may also be that the Mac hasn't actually shut down completely when you switch off the strip. You might try waiting a minute or two before doing that to see if it makes a difference, or listening carefully for any noises coming from the Mac after the menu shutdown before hitting the power strip switch.
I sometimes use an old veterinary stethoscope to listen for sounds coming from Macs for troubleshooting purposes (although never yet with a MacPro) & have noticed that the screen goes dark a little before everything else is fully shut down.

  • Why does my MacBook Air's shutting down slow down after the recent update?

After the newly update OS X Update 10.9.4, the shut down of my MacBook Air slows down. It will stay several seconds more than before the update. This happens every time I try to shut down my MacBook, please meet my problem.

A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Once your Mac has booted to the desktop, click Shut Down from the Apple () menu to test.

  • HP Pavilion PC keeps randomly shutting down without warning

My PC will randomly shut itself off without warning. This is especially annoying when I am trying to download the new Windows 10 update. I at least know it is not a virus, because I have done several scans and nothing has come up. If anymore information is needed to give a better diagnostic, please, do not hesitate to ask. Thanks in advance.

  • My 2011 21.5 iMac keeps randomly shutting down

    Hi, all -
I have a mid 2011 refurbished iMac that I bought last September from the Apple store. I love it, but it has a bad habit of suddenly shutting down on me. It started about three weeks after I got it. If I unplug it and plug it back it it always turns back on, although sometimes I have to do it three or four times before it'll turn back on.
Other times I try to turn it on using the power button and nothing happens. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it will turn on.
I took it in to the Apple store a few weeks ago and they ran all the tests on it and found nothing wrong. They did a reinstall of the OS but it's still shutting off for no apparent reason.
There's no pattern to it. Some days it doesn't do it at all and other times it'll do it two or three times in a row, sometimes not even getting past the bootup screen.
I found out the outlet it was plugged into wasn't properly grounded, could that be a cause? It's now plugged into a plug in another room that is grounded via an extension cord, but it's still turned off on me once in a while.
I've looked around and it seems this is a common problem with some iMacs, and some claim no cause has ever been found. I'm wondering if I should bother taking it back to the Apple store when they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Maybe it's something in the power supply to my house?
    Any ideas out there? Thanks!

You can call Apple Customer Service and they should be able to provide you with Lion for your iMac.
    Hope this helps

  • Iphone 3gs keeps randomly shutting down

My iPhone 3GS has just recently started locking up at random times; sometimes entering an app, whilst in use of app, trying to keystroke in, and when leaving an app. The screen goes blank but most of the time there are portions of back lite screen in random width and numerous vertical slices lite up in black color. I have to press and hold the power button for several moments to get it to start back up. In a 3 of the 12 cases after this occured the battery lost half its charge requiring a plug in power source to boot back up.
What could be potentially causing these failures?

To make sure that it is not a firmware problem, reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again. If this does not help, set it up "as new device" without using the latest backup, in case it is damaged.
How to set up your iPhone or iPod touch as a new device
Does it also start locking up when connected to the computer or adapter? If no, get your battery checked, this might be battery problem then.
