Why does my laserjet 5p keep detecting as postscript?

I have a LaserJet 5P. When I install it, I don't get the option to select that it's postscript or non-postscript. Consequently all of my documents look like userdict()print flush}%%BeginFeature which is very rarely what I wanted.
Why is my computer obsessed with postscript? How do I remove printer drivers?

I would have to agree with greg on this.  I took a look at the drivers the full HP driver download provides.  There really isn't a separate PPD for the LaserJet 5P.  There is a PPD for the LaserJet 5mp.  The PPD contains the line
*Product:  "(HP LaserJet 5P)"
That is what is being matched to how your printer identifies itself to the system.  Being that it is actually the PPD for the LaserJet 5mp, it uses the "hpPostScriptPDE.plugin".
Certainly the plxmono driver that greg mentions will work.  I might suggest you try the Gutenprint driver from http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php.  I believe that the Gutenprint driver is a bit faster than the pxlmono driver as it produces smaller files that are sent to the printer.  This is especially true for print jobs that contain images.
