Why does my Mac Mail programme keep turning on the SSL option?

For a couple of years now my wife's Mac Mail programme has from time to time stopped getting most of the emails sent to it for a week or more. I've wasted many hours on the phone to our service provider without ever getting to the bottom of the problem. Now I believe I know what's been happening. It seems that her Mail preferences keep turning on the SSL option without any human involvement. Apparently emails sent to an SSL selected email address will only make it into her in-box if they come from an SSL selected mail programme. Yesterday, scratching my head as to why, once again, few emails were getting through, I once again looked at the preferences and noticed that the SSL option, which I had recently unchecked, was once again checked. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. I unchecked it. It immediately re-checked itself. And so on, for ten minutes when, suddenly, it remained unchecked.
Why is this happening? My wife never, and I mean never fiddles with settings on her computer and nobody else uses it. The checking of the SSL option is being done entirely at the behest of the machine itself. Can anybody tell me how this could be happening? And could anybody tell me how I can stop it from happening again?

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
{ sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select
 ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.

  • Why does my mac mini server keep dropping off the network?

I have Verizon FiOS and use its router/wireless to connect all macbooks, macbook pros, etc. connect to each other and the snow leopard server, which runs the printers and time machine for one of the laptops.  I'm not using any other heavy duty server apps. I just want the mac mini to stay on the network and do its job.  Invariably when I go down stairs to the mac mini and ethernet to the router to share screen, I find some update that needs to be installed, which apparently is why the mac mini has gone on strike.  I usually can see the problem when I go to connect to server and see the other macbooks, but not the mac mini.  Then after much coaxing, I'm able to get the server back on line for a few days, until the next software update.  The server is set to auto restart, but why is it balking at rejoining the network?
mac mini is running snow leopard, as are three of the four macbooks. router is an actiontec model.  wireless network is WPA2 and mac mini is ethernet connected to the router.

I've just experienced this problem when using a Marantz SR4001 receiver between my Mac Mini and HD TV. I noticed that the problem didn't happen all the time and I have found a workaround solution.
The problem is not a fault, but seems to be caused by the receiver defaulting the HDMI video properties. It's an old unit so I'm thinking that 720p is a default resolution for the receiver.
I can make the problem happen if the receiver is turned on before the TV. Seems that without an output connection the receiver is telling the mac that it expects 720p.
If I turn on the TV before the receiver, the TV seems to tell the receiver that it is expecting 1080p 25fps and the receiver obliges and the Mac retains those display properties.
So it appears that the video output device dictates the output properties back to the receiver and the receiver in turn back to the Mac. In absence of an output device the receiver defaults to 720p.
Solution: Turn on the TV before the receiver.

  • Why does my mac mail constantly rebuild itself in the area called Mail Activity?

My Mail is constantly rebuilding itself. When at home with a super fast internet connection, it's not big deal, but when travleing and using a slower connection the activity runs all the time.  Seems to me that it's taking up resources. I have Gmail and Yahoo accounts set up and sometimes it's downloading 12,000 messages!  Is this a problem?  What happens if I hit the "x" or cancel button during a download?

Sounds more like a server issue rather than rebuilidng and as a matter of fact, an actual rebuild might help.

  • Why does my Mac Book pro keep restarting

why does my Mac Book pro keep restarting and how can it be fixed

It would be nice if you could include a kernel panic log to verify that your problem is...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Why does my aol mail not sync properly with the Droid Razr? Never had the problem with blackberry but now I deal with a great deal of spam & duplicating tasks

Why does my aol mail not sync properly with the Droid Razr? Never had the problem with blackberry but now I deal with a great deal of spam & duplicating tasks

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • Why does my Apple Mail insert old messages into the body of new emails?

Why does my Apple Mail insert old messages into the body of new emails? The correct sender's name will appear in the "From" column, but an old message from a different sender in the body. This happens randomly. I have an iMac OSX 10.6.8. I recently had the hard drive cleaned, but Apple Mail seemed to be running fine when I set it up again. Could this be a virus? What should I do about it? Thanks for any insights!

Thanks.  While you were replying to my question, I went into notifications and figured

Why does my grandson's iPhone 5 not have the "None" option in billing info?  I have it on my iPad Mini and on my iPhone 4S.  We both live in Canada within 20 minutes of each other.
I bought him $30.00 worth of iTunes gift cards, he loaded them, but it won't let him use them.  It just goes to his previously entered Visa card which he no longer has and it won't let him unselect it either.  Sounds like theft to me!

Because you that's not a supported bluetooth profile on the iPhone... In order to sync contacts with a handsfree system, the system needs to support the PBAP bluetooth profile. If it does, then the contacts will sync automatically.

    Isolating Issues
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
    Try a restart.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Why does my Mac shutdown while playing itunes and the machine is in idle mode?

When I am playing music and my iMac goes into sleep mode, the music stops after 5 to 10 minutes and my machine shuts down.  Why?  Is there a way to stop this behavior?

    Hello Jason,,
Thanks for the response.  Your suggestion is not my problem.        It does not matter how long I set the machine to sleep.  My       machine powers down after some period, but ONLY when I am playing       iTunes.  I am also running Parallels 9.0 which uses Windows 7 at       the same time Mavericks is running.  This allows me to use my       Windows programs.  If I shut down Parallels, it does not solve my       problem.  Also, it is important to note that when playing iTunes,       the machine suspends Windows 7 completely and powers down the Mac       to the sign-on screen.  Sometimes the machine powers down after 10       minutes and sometimes 20 minutes or a little more.  I am really       stumped!!  This situation never happens unless I am playing       iTunes.  Otherwise the sleep routine functions normally.

  • Why does my mac say "failed to connect to the device" when I try to print through airport express?

So a little back ground.  I have a unibody 2 ghz core 2 duo running 10.5.8 and a mac book air running 10.7.5.  I set a airport express and added a new printer to both computers using bonjour.  My mac air has no problem connecting and printing but my unibody does.  The "failed to connect to device" message come up after I open print que for that printer and then utility.  It unibody sees the printer through bonjour and installs the printer but when asked to connect, nothing happens.  can anyone help please?

If you updated from a previous version of OS X to 10.9 and had an older version of driver installed, then you can get this message. Sometimes a quick fix is to reset the printing system. Note that this action will remove all devices from the Printers & Scanners preference pane, but not the supporting drivers, so if you do have other printers or scanners on this Mac you will have to add them again.

  • Mac Mail - How to turn off the animated "boxes"

Best place to put this question hopefully ? As they seem to have gotten rid of the dedicated "Mail" forum here.
In mail, how do you turn off them outlines/boxes that magically appear around a whole paragraph or number, etc.. when your mouse gets close ?
Its so annoying, and used to not do this. I am sure some people find this cute, useful and cool. I find it a nuisance since it messes me up when trying to copy and paste text here and there and structurally manipulate emails. My workflow just finds it "in the way" all the time and I never actually use what its purpose is. So I was hoping there was a way to turn it off so it doesn't do that.

Well you can always select 'plain text' from the format menu (or button in toolbar if installed) but of course you will lose formatting for the whole document.

  • Why does my Mac Pro always power-up to the recovery partition?

I have a "classic" Mac Pro, I suppose, since it dates from about 2008 - Xeon dual core, though with 10G of RAM.
I installed Lion and everything works fine, except for one thing: whenever I power-up, I start up in the recovery partition. That doesn't actually bother me a lot, but it prevents my wife from using the computer if it's powered off.

Pram reset did the trick. Oddly, I've had my Pro for several years now and this is the first time I remember having to zap the PRAM.
My son (an Apple tech) was nearby today and told me that PRAM Reset (command-option-P-R all held down just before the chime and released after the chime) is the canonical solution for odd boot behavior.
Regarding other suggestions: yes, I did indeed open the Startup Disk selection in the System Preferences. It provided exactly one choice: my legitimate boot disk. Yes, I clicked on it anyway, even though it was the one that was selected already. No, it didn't make a difference.
Perhaps if I had had a choice of bootable disks I might have been able to switch between them and make the problem go away. But I only had one bootable disk to choose from.
I don't use Boot Camp, I run Windows through VMWare.
