Why Does My Mac Wake Up At Night By Itself

I have noticed my iMac waking up in the middle of the night when it's sleeping. It's not real loud or anything, but I am a light sleeper and it wakes me up, sort of like a  Twighlight Zone episode. Does anyone else notice this? Could it be spywre?

It is programmed to run various maintenance routines at night, but only weekly.
There's daily, weekly, and monthly periodic unix maintenance routines.  Daily and weekly's periods are scheduled a 3:15AM and monthly's at 5:30AM.  If the machine is asleep at the scheduled time they will start a short time after the machine is awakened.  However, if the machine is off, the schedule is skipped until the next scheduled time (reference).

  • Why does my mac wake up from sleep while it is closed when I plug in the charger and viceversa (plug or unplug)?? It is latest 13 Pro with disk drive 2012-2013

         I dont know why it happens. I clos my mac, it goes to sleep and when it is already sleeping if i plug the charger then it wakes up, or at least the fans and the white led light near to the infrared thing turns on. And this also happens if it is sleeping with the charger plugged and whenever i want to quit the plug cause its already charged it turns on. All this happens with the lid (top cover) closed and only when it is sleeping and I unplug when it is pluged, or plug if it is not. I have some more Macbook pro olders 2010, and 2009-8 with 10.9.2, and this thing does not happen to them. Please if someone knows tell me??? If it is not clear is the Macbook Pro 13 with 3.0 usb, disk drive, the latest that apple announced with the disk drive, so i think it is late 2012 or 2013

    There are two distinct sets of settings for Energy-Saver items -- one for Battery, one for Power Adapter.
    When you plug in the adapter, it needs to wake up and change over to the other settings -- sort of like the hospital waking you up to be sure you get your sleeping pill.
    The later versions of Power Management are more sophisticated than older versions, so they are more likely to do this "correctly" -- to wake up and change over.

  • Why does my Mac wake up after "clicking" sleep with my mouse?

    When any user on my iMac tries to "sleep" the computer using the mouse and any "sleep" comand on either the user screen or as a logged in user the computer "re-awakens" by itself. If the power button on the back of the iMac is pressed the computer will go to sleep and stay that way until "awakened" by any normal means (mouse click, keystroke, or turning on a periphial like the printer, which is normal and expected).
    Can anyone help explain why "clicking" sleep with the mouse does not allow my computer to stay "sleeping"?

  • Why does my mac reboot on its own?

    Why does my mac reboot on its own?

    Oh den.thed...  I saw your post this morning and I was so excited....  ran to the Mac and got to Energy Saver, and...  the checkbox is already unchecked.
    Long story, I'll make it short.  Just got the Mac back after having the HDD replaced.  (It stopped working after less than 500 hours.)  This rebooting thing has been happening ever since I got the computer in 2010, and I was hoping it would coincidentally stop happening after having this crashed HDD replaced last week.  No such luck.  Still doing it, even after getting the computer back from Apple.  Two of my kids have macbooks, have used the cr*p out of them, and have had very few problems (nothing big).  I bought this Mac, to replace a dead Dell desktop that got very little use, and so far I am not sure I did the right thing.  Really wish I could get this "automatic" rebooting thing fixed.  (Reboots with no notice, while doing normal tasks - internet, word docs, etc.)  Thanks again for your help.  Let me know if I should try anything else.

  • Why does my Mac Book pro keep restarting

    why does my Mac Book pro keep restarting and how can it be fixed

    It would be nice if you could include a kernel panic log to verify that your problem is...
    Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
    If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
    Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
             com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff
                dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000
             com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff

                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000
                dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000
    Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
    So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

    Sounds to me like you may have gotten a machine with hardware issues, but it's hard to say.  It will shut down if it gets too hot, but that's not a normal occurrence.  I have never seen a MacBook Pro shut down due to heat, even after lengthy 3D gaming sessions where the fans are running fast and the bottom of the machine is unpleasant to touch.
    First thing I would try to do is reset the SMC.  If that doesn't help, erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch, which you should always do with a used machine anyway.
    If a fresh system doesn't help, you'll need to get it checked out by Apple.
    Edit: Oh, and sig is absolutely right...  please don't post in all caps!  It's very irritating.

  • What is Listener.bundle?  Why does my Mac keep asking to load it?

    What is listener.bundle?  Why does my Mac keep asking to load it?

    Hi, Sk8erStan. I don't exactly know how/what your (or my) listener.bundle works/does, but for me, this became an issue when I downloaded the network scanning software "driver" for my Lexmark printer. Apparently this lets the Mac receive a request over wi-fi from the networked printer to set up, receive, and save a scan datafile. Essentially it lets the printer control the Mac. Which is OK and worked fine in my case .. EXCEPT every 5 or 10 minutes I get a pop-up alert asking me if I want to DENY or ALLOW my "listener bundle" app .. from listening. Really irritating and I have not yet figured out how to turn that off. If you have solved your problem, please post your solution and what you learned. Thanks.
