Why does my Macbook Core 2 Duo 13" keep shutting itself off and/or repetively rebooting on its own?

My Macbook Core 2 Duo 13" won't stay on for any significant time anymore. When it does, it seems that the slightest movement, or pressing a key will shut it down or it just shuts down on its own. Or it reboots repetitively after chiming. Or it remains on as it is doing now for the last 30 minutes, long enough to see if it needed a firmware update. It's never on long enough to really use it anymore.
When there is no image on the screen, I often can hear the fan or drive running quietly in the background. I can turn it off by powering down with the button. Without the power cord, it will eventually drain the battery if I don't force shut it down.
I have verified that the hard drive is OK by removing it and mounting it externally.
I have been unable to do a hard system reboot (hold down powerbutton until system starts and continue to hold until tone) - no tone, just keeps rebooting.
When it stayed on long enough, I tried to install the firmware 1.1 update. Message was that it didn't need it.
I have tried removing one RAM card at a time ( it has 1GB + 512Mb). Haven't really noticed any change. "POST" message is OK when it starts
Any ideas? I've looked at all the "usual suspects".  Thanks!

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

  • My Macbook Pro keeps shutting itself off... Why?

I am not sure what happened to it because nothing out of the ordinary has happened.. Just one day it started turning on and off.. and then finally it was permanently off. I took it to a battery store to get a new battery and light icon turned on as if macbook was about to turn on,  but screen was black. I looked up online and i found a place that said to take battery out and with batter out hold power button down for 5 seconds. I did this and walah, laptop turned on for me like nothing had happened. I thought that I had solved my problem, but I was wrong. Earlier today, laptop shut down again and I once again had to take battery out and hold power button down.
Does anyone know why my MacBook is doing this? Is there something specific that I need to take it in for? It's so frustrating!

Yes.  So a diagnosis can be performed so 1) you know exactly what is wrong with it instead of throwing parts at it and trying things that only solve the issue temporarily and 2) so you can get an estimate and get it fixed.

  • Macbook keeps shutting itself off after upgrading to snow leopard

Hi everyone, I hope you can help me out as I am out of ideas! After be assured that I could upgrade my late 2006 intel based macbook (10.5.8) to snow leopard, I bought the disc and tried to install. Everytime I tried, it shut itself down. I wiped the hard drive clean and tried again. Still happened. Finally after 14 hours of attempts, something finally stuck and I had snow leopard. I then tried to get all the updates and it kept shutting down. I tried to migrate my files from time machine and it shut itself down. Fed up, I tried to go back to leopard, but the computer won't stay on long enough to complete this. I wiped the hard drive clean again and now it won't stay on long enough to get to the start up page! HELP! I tried starting up in safe mode and it won't work. I've run disc utility several times and it says everything is OK. Now I have a blank hard drive on a computer that won't stay on for more than 5 minutes. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, otherwise I got to take it in to an apple specialist as the apple store has already told me the refuse to work on it because it is older than 5 years!!!!

Might actually be something to do with your router. If you have a firewall set up and you are streaming constantly your firewall might choose to kick you off the network. Just a thought.

My fully charged iPhone 4 shut itself off this morning and wont turn back on. Any suggestions?

Have you tried holding down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.   If that doesn't work, try that step again but with your phone plug into your Mac.

  • MacBook shutting itself off. Genius bar supposedly fixed?

I have a macbook pro, I purchased in January, so not even a year old. A few months ago it strated acting strange with lines traveling across the screen sporadically, shutting itself off, and shutting down when I plug anything into the USB port. Then the other day it shut itself down and wouldn't restart. Went through all the stuff on the phone with the tech line and they determined I needed to take it in. So yesterday I drove the 120 miles to the nearest Apple store to have it looked at. Spent about 3 1/2 hours at the genius bar while they did whatever they do in the back, then wiped and reloaded everything on the computer. They ran their diagnostic after and said it's good to go and gave it back to me. This morning I turned it on and tried to plug my iphone in and it shut itself off again. Then after I restarted it, in the middle of doing some work it randomly shut itself off. I'm really getting irritated. What kind of junk is Apple selling people for $1500? I though macs were suppose to be good? This isn't good, it's junk. I'm looking for options as to how to make this think work right. I can't keep driving 120 miles both ways back and forth for Apple's incompetant people to do whatever they do, wipe and reload the entire machine, not bother fixing the problem, and hand it back to me like it's fine... Anyone have any good ideas?

  • Refurbished MacBook Core Duo or New MacBook Core 2 Duo w/Edu Discount?

I'm interested in getting an Apple notebook for school and can't decide whether to get the new MacBook Core 2 Duo and use my student discount or just get a refurbished MacBook Core Duo for a few hundred less. Is the Core 2 Duo chip worth the extra money? I plan on using it for my design courses, which use the Adobe and Macromedia suite of applications. Oh, and I plan on playing WoW on it as well.
    Thanks!

Well theres a few important details here:
What version of the Core Duo were you after (Basic Middle or Black) for refurb?
What version are you thinking of for the Edu Discount?
Personally i'm going to university next year and am Planning on buying a Macbook in about March or June (What ever model is out then hopefully a 3rd revision). But from what is out the greatest value out of all Macbooks to date is the Middle Version of the MBC2D.
In the Core Duo generation, the jump from basic to Middle wasn't big. You got a slightly faster processor and Super Drive. Now for the same price difference you not only get the bonus C2D processor you get 1GB of Ram, A Superdrive, and a 80 GB Hard drive. For that reason, the best value i would say is the middle version of the C2D Macbooks.
You may not think that you really need 1 GB of Ram or a 80 GB Harddrive but after using a mac mini (which i unfortunately returned) I quickly realized how slow these machines are without sufficient ram. If you plan on using the Adobe suite which is not yet UB you will have a rough time without at least one gig of ram. By then it would probably be UB, but still, programs like Photoshop and Cinema 4D (If you are taking any computer animation courses) will not run well with just 512 MBs. Leopard, i'm expecting will also recommend aproximately 1 Gig of ram. If you plan on playing WoW and doing Work (Exactly what i'm planning on doing on MB) i'd go for 1 Gig of ram at least no matter what generation you get. The 80 Gigs is also in my opinion required if your running bootcamp. 60 Gig HD is insufficient, because, after being formated and having both Mac OSX and Windows XP (Or Vista) on it, the 60 GB HD may end up as more of 52 Gig HD which isn't much space to devide between to Operating Systems. (After installing +your suites that gives you like 45 Gigs to split+Music or videos you may have... brings you down to like 37 GBs + the 10 Gigs you should keep free for your computer to run fine that gives you about 27 Gigs to devide as freem space). If you plan on only running OSX then 60 Gigs should be sufficient if your not doing video editing. But if you want to run Bootcamp I'd get at least 80 Gigs (I'd go with 120 but the jump in price from 80 to 120 is huge compared the jump from 60 to 80). This is why i think the Middle CD2 is the best Macbook because you get 80 GB HD with 1 Gig of ram, a faster processor and they throw in your Superdrive from a relatively small jump in price. When looking to make a purchase try to get the cheap upgrades if they will help (Eg. a 80 Gig HD over a 60 gig HD for a small price) and try to stay away from expensive premium upgrades (120 GiG HD for much more money- unless you really need it).
    Hope that helps your decision,
Sorry if the grammar/spelling is horrible, I wrote this very quickly and didn't bother with grammar/proof reading.
    Good luck,
I'm sure you will be happy with w/e macbook you choose but like i said i recommend a 80GB HD and 1GB ram at least on either generation of MB. I

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102.

My MacBook Core 2 Duo will not boot up.  In safe mode I see keychain problems and Mach 1102 and it keeps circling through the same error.  Also the screen is so faint (pressing the F1 and F2 keys don't do anything).   I got this from a friend and he didn't have any of the original discs.  Any suggestions?  From what I've read it's a problem with a recent update.  I've never had a Mac so I'm trying to learn and fix it.

I just had an issue like this. I was able to boot up with an external firewire drive, although it was a lot of trouble. I think doing an option boot finally worked; holding down the option key, I eventually got to see the firewire drive was bootable, and booted from it.
I put the thing in verbose boot mode (command - v , I think; but please look it up. I have no Mac books at work to check). In verbose mode, you could see that the hard drive could not mount; the OS tried to do fsck, but it failed around 2/3 of the way, and the CPU was halted.
I was occasionally able to boot normally, but never in safe or single user modes; these do a disk test first, which invariably failed.
I could see from the system and console logs when I managed to get the firewire boot going that there were repeated errors trying to access drive s03, the internal SATA drive. The logs on the SATA drive showed huges numbers of errors. At a wild guess, for some reason a lot of sectors went bad all at once. There had been a some erratic behavior before, but I'd put that down to the single processor G5 problems. (these were non video related, just freezes).
Applecare wanted me to carry the huge thing into the local Apple store, but I persuaded them to just send me a replacment hard drive, which they did. The new one works perfectly.
