Why does my MacBook hang? It's boring watching the colour wheel spin endlessly.

My wife and I have matching MacBooks. We are having problems with system hangs. These occur mostly when working in the finder. The system hangs when using scrollbars, clicking on files to open an app, using command tab to scroll through apps, opening new finder windows etc. These problems havebecome so bad that I am considering buying a windows laptop because we can't get any work done. We've tried Disk Utilities, Disk Warrior, MacKeeper, System reinstalls zapping the PRam etc. Nothing really helps. We did find a couple of files infected with windows trojans but even after deleting them the problems continue.
I've read in a few posts about overheating causing these problems and tried installing smcFanControl, but it would not launch after installation.
After being a Mac addict since my 7100 I am now considering going to windows I am so ****** with this MacBook.

Well, MacKeeper can inflict damage to your system:
MacKeeper is highly invasive malware that can de-stablize your operating system. It is also unethically marketed and a rip-off.

  • Why does attaching my design to yahoo mail change the colours?

    Hi there,
Sorry if I'm being stupid here - I'm quite new to AI and still getting my head around the colour profiles. I've just done a design that I need to get printed, so made sure it was in CMYK from the start. My friend (who is getting it printed) wanted the design as a jpeg, which exported fine on my mac, the colours look as they're supposed to (watercolours, so not overly bright), but when I attach it to an email (and when I uploaded it to this forum as well), this is what happens - the colours going all fluro.
I'm sure it's something really simple that I just have no idea about - hope someone can enlighten me!
    Thanks,
    Olivia

Sure it's something simple, but since you haven't provided any exact info about your procedures, we can't really know. Presumably they are simply stripping all color profile information and/ or doing some unwanted server-side recompression and conversion to RGB. That being so, the answer would be to pack your file into a ZIP or create a PDF which they may simply leave alone. Otherwise of course as with all CMYK content it doesn't do you any good if your own system isn't calibrated and you do not use the correct profiles just as the same your friend needs to work calibrated. Else there would be no point to it.

  • Why does my macbook hang when I restart?

I have to shut down and boot up, restart just hangs.

It helps when you post to tell us which Mac OS X you have installed.
Try booting from your install disc, run Disk Utility.
The startup disk may need repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
Check Capacity and Available at the bottom of the Disk Utility window.
Make sure there's no less then 15% free disk space.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro not boot up with the Snow Leopard Disk?

I have erased the entire hard drive on a 2011 macbook pro that had snow leopard on it. I was corrupted. I not insert my Snow Leopard Disk and the machine will not boot. I chose target mode to erase the hard drive from my mac book pro with Mt. Lion on it.
    Thank uou for any help,
    Ken

Target mode?  Is there a second computer involved?  Why not insert the Snow Leopard disc in the computer on which you wish to install and hold down the C key to boot from it?
If the disc came with a different computer it will not boot another model.  Retail discs also may not boot all model computers, even those that came with the same major version.  For example, some MBPs came with 10.6.6 but a retail disc may only be 10.6.3.

  • Why does my Mac hang at some point? The startup is slower than usual and sometime's the graphic glitches occur. please help!

    Isolating Issues
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
    Try a restart.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro battery discharge even when the charger is plugged in?

I've been having a myriad of problems with my MacBook Pro's battery. The main problem is that when in use, the battery steadily discharges often at a very quick rate even when I have the charger plugged in, the only way I can get it to recharge is to close the lid or turn the computer off, however, it has recently started to take a very long time to recharge (I left it for 12 hours and it charged from 0% to 60%). I also noticed that while off, the charger light occassionaly goes green and then back to orange every few minutes. When I manage to get the battery up to 100% charge, it usually stays at 'Charged' for around 5 or 10 minutes and then it just comes up with 'Calculating...' as it slowly discharges, it also occassionaly claims that it is recharging and that it will take around 6 to 8 hours but it only charges about 1% of the battery and switches to 'Not charging'. Also, sometimes the charger light wont come on when it is plugged in and the Mac refuses to acknowledge it is plugged in for some time.
I took it to the Apple Store a few months ago and one of the Geniuses reset the System Management controller and did a quick hardware test which seemed to fix it but the problems returned soon after, I cannot enter the hardware test screen and subsequent attempts to reset the SMC have done nothing, he also tested the charger and tried it with another charger but it did not help.  Hope you guys can help me as I am completely stumped by this and its beginning to annoy me as my Mac is becoming almost unusable.

  • Why does my iphone hang up after talking on the phone for 1 hour and 30 mins?

everytime im on the phone, my iphone hangs up excaly after 1 hours and 30 mins of talking, is there anything that i can do, so it wont hang up cuz its annoying!!!

So I have to take off my case everytime I make a phone call. Nice job, apple. As soon as I read that some of the functionality was designed in the metal ring around the phone, I knew my case was in trouble. I thought the idea behind 3G was improvement. Not steps backward.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro screen go black when the charger is plugged in while using bootcamp?

While on bootcamp, my computer runs perfectly fine unless I have the charger plugged in. Once I plug it in the screen goes black and starts to charge. I know the computer is still on because I can hear audio from videos if one is playing while I plug in the charger. Once I unplug it the screen comes back on. This makes it so I am unable to work on my computer with the charger plugged in. This is a new problem and did not start once I installed windows 7, it used to work fine. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your suggestion! It helped me with this issue as well. My problem was that I was that Windows had started but wasn't logged in yet--the brightness keys didn't work on the windows login screen. I had to log in to Windows, then plug in the power, then turn the brightness up.
    Thanks again for the suggestion!

  • Why does my macbook screen saver clock always read the same hour?

Clock always reads 7 pm but the minute matches the current minute

A lot of goofy things can happen if you have changed certain preferences, or upgraded with non-standard settings in place:
    System Preferences > Languages & Texts > Formats ...
... set a plausible standard form, like US or UK or something familiar. Close the window and Save changes. Then set to your actual preferences. Close the window and Save changes again. Test.

  • Why does my itunes keep freezing and give me the rainbow wheel of death?

Whenever I am doing stuff on my computer it will randomly freeze up and I am almost positive it only happens when iTunes is open and playing. I have a lot of free space on my hardrive even though I have around 6000 songs and a bunch of movies on there. I just downloaded a bunch of games form the app store too that could be taking up space. Please let me know if you can help!

what model year make computer do you have what os are you on how much ram do you have?
go to launchpad (yeah I said it) utilities> system information.
on the left hand side, hardware should be highlight and you will have all the information you need to give us.
Feel free to exclude your serial number. you can do so in preview. But it doesn't really matter, and it would be nice to have a reference of it somewhere should it ever get stolen. it your choice.

  • Why does my Macbook not choose the 5Ghz network?

Hi there! Can anyone tell me why, if I have a dual band simultaneous Airport Extreme and iStumbler says I have a 58% 5 bar 5Ghz on channel 100 signal right at the top of the list of available networks and the other examples from my network are 45% and 42% on the 2.4Ghz band - then why does my Macbook insist on choosing one of the lesser signal strength networks to log in to? I am extending my network via an Airport Express in the bedroom and I think it is that which is showing the highest signal (probably as it it considerably closer than the Extreme where I am sat right now!). Just wondered, doesn't seem very dual band to me if it never connects to the better band? Don't want to force it to connect to 5Ghz as that's not required, at the moment it chooses.

Chances are that the extended network is using the 2.4 GHz radio band as this band allows for greater range. Remember that the AirPort Express can only operate in one band or the other. It is not a simultaneously dual-band device like your Extreme.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime?

Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime? When my girlfriend and I are trying to watch a movie on Netflix together while on FaceTime my MacBook Pro always decreases the volume of any background sound on my computer so I can barely hear it. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you!

Have the same issue too. Apple can you please change this annoying feature. You are making long distance relationships more difficult.
I like how Facetime was with the old iOS, where nothing was dimmed. OR at least maybe if you could give users the option to turn on or off dimming of facetime.
