Why does my macbook keep crashing after login and sleep mode?

For some time I've experienced my MacBook restart shortly after turning it on or awakening it from sleep. Today it did it repeatedly several times.
Anyone knows why?

You might be having hardware issues with your GPU. But, this may just be a software problem. Start by doing the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Why does my macbook Pro pinwheel after reopening from sleep?

I have a 2.4 i5 MBP with 8GB Ram running 10.6.7.  It is attached to my work exchange server with authenicates my login and network.
My problem is that often, but not always, when i reopen the lid of my MBP awaking it from an overnight sleep, programs are unresponsive and even basic finder/OS functions are not available, like force quit or system preferences.  The pinwheel usually starts when I click the wifi icon in the top bar.  The only way out of this is to hard reset the machine.  Today I had to hard reset it twice because even after a reboot the machine was unresponsive for a long period of time. (20 minutes maybe).
Could this be an exchange problem?  I never have trouble connecting to the exchange while the computer is awake, and i am connected to the ethernet and wifi.
Help!  If I go to the IT guy he'll just want to wipe my mahcine rather than troubleshoot.

Shutdown the machine nightly instead of using sleep.
Try running all of OnyX cleaning and maintenance features and rebooting.

Also use the Verify Preferences (check show only corrupted plist) and make  a not of which ones are bad, seek and move these to the desktop and reboot, they will automatically rebuild.
If everythign is fine, then move the bad plists to the Trash and empty.

  • Why does my MacBook keep crashing?

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro that's currently running lion. In the last several months my MacBook has been repeatedly crashing. Sometimes once in a week and sometimes three times within twenty minutes. When it crashes the screen cuts off and the entire laptop becomes unresponsive. I've installed security software that has found and removed malware on the machine. Also just in case of dying RAM cards I upgraded them this past weekend. It's still crashing. I've sent in nearly 100 reports to apple and have yet to get a response or any other form of aid. I'm so tired of the issue happening. I just want it to stop. If anyone has suggestions or can help in any way I would highly appreciate it.

Great choice on RAM...as far as I'm concerned the only way to go. Virus software usually slows Macs down and is largely not needed....maybe only to protect e-mail that was forwarded to you and you are passing on. My ISP has Anti Virus included for that purpose.
Here's a nice thread on the issue.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk for OS 10.6.8 and under. If you are running 10.7 or 10.8 run Disk Repair from Disk Utility on your Recovery System. It shows you how in the link.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Repair reports and if DU was able to repair them. This could just be a start in repairs and you may need a better utility to finish the job.
    Then Repair Permissions.
No need to report any Permissions errors........we all get them.

  • Why does my computer keep freezing after waking from "sleeping"?

I'm running Lion (10.7.2) and frequently, not everytime, but often, the computer will freeze about 1-2 min after I've woken it from sleep – there are usually 1-2 applications open and then I can work for about a couple minutes and then it freezes and the only way to resolve it is to power it off w/ the power button and then restart.
I've got a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM – there is very little on the hard drive, but that seems irrelevant here anyway.
    Thanks for any tips/help!

  • Why does my emails keep downloading after deleting them?

Why does my emails keep downloading after deleting them?

It sounds like you may be "synced" to an IMAP email server with your ISP.  You would need to go into Mail>Preferences and set the messages to be removed from the IMAP server after some period of time so they don't redownload to your computer.  That's one possiblility.  Another is if you are synced with iCloud, then the mail is stored on your iCloud server backup and will redownload until you remove it.
    Hope this helps

When my girlfriend and I are trying to watch a movie on Netflix together while on FaceTime my MacBook Pro always decreases the volume of any background sound on my computer so I can barely hear it. Have the same issue too. Apple can you please change this annoying feature. You are making long distance relationships more difficult.
I like how Facetime was with the old iOS, where nothing was dimmed. OR at least maybe if you could give users the option to turn on or off dimming of facetime.

  • Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode

I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
    1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
    2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
    3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
    1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
    2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
    3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
    4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
    The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
    Solution:
    1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
    2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
    3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
    1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    2) Restart the ibook.
    3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.

    sdad sdsdds:
Your observations and solution are right on the money!!
I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.
Thanks a lot. I understand how you feel about posting here, but please be aware that you are helping many people who would be completely without a clue otherwise. Thanks again for your efforts.
Now I can ship my sister her iBook!

  • Why does MSN Messenger keep crashing?

I don't know why, but whenever i try to update to MSN Messenger 8 (or the latest, 8.0.1) It will install fine, but then when i go to launch it, it immediately crashes. Version 7 has been flaky lately as well, sometimes logging in and working fine, other times stopping in mid-login saying i'm logged in at another location. Yet i can sign in via the browser version, then re-login and then it's fine. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies. Vious187, I'm running a 13" Macbook Core2Duo 2.4 Ghz. It came with 10.5 installed. I've had this problem since version 8 of MSN Messenger for Mac came out. I've repaired permissions, deleted preferences, just about anything i can think of, and it still crashes immediately after it starts up.

  • Why Does adobe Acrobat keep crashing?

Acrobat keeps crashing when trying to print documents and the only fix that I have found so far is to uninstall and reinstall the program.  Does anyone know why this keeps happening?

X Pro is the version that I am using.  We have 64 bit windows as well.  I updated the installation after each time I have to reinstall it but it still from time to time crashes.  Then it will not allow me to reopen any PDF documents.

  • Why does my mac keep crashing?

My mac has started to crash unexpectedly.....it does this when carrying out different tasks but mainly in safari as thats usually what im using....
I cant watch video content or facetime for more than a minute without it crashing and i cant work it out!!
    - I've run the apple hardware test and no troubles were found
    - I've reseated the RAM and carried out third party tests on that
    - I've followed various guides on the net to work out what the problems are like running in safe boot (which doesnt seem to crash) etc but dont seem to find what the problem is
Here is an extract from the system log before a two crashes:

I can post other kernel logs etc if that helps...

You need to determine if it's a hardware issue or software. So, try booting from your Leopard installer disk, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk. Report back. Also, how much free space have you on your hard drive?
