Why does my macbook keep randomly turning off ?

Hello everyone I am new to the forums. I have a mid-2010 macbook pro that I purchased brand new in January 2011. Last September I noticed that my battery kept dying extremely quick and that it had the condition to replace now. Me trying to take the cheap way out I decided to purchase the battery myself and install it since I am not under the applecare warranty and apple quoted me for about $300 - $500 I believe to do it. The first week or so after I changed the battery my laptop was back to normal. Since then it randomly turns off, still says the battery needs to be replaced now, and also sometimes my battery percentage shows 0% and charging. I really want to know what's wrong with it..Thanks in advance for the help!

Have you reset the SMC?

  • My macbook keeps randomly turning off.

My macbook keeps randomly shutting off. It is no longer under warranty. I've read all of these discussions from people with similar issues and I've tried some of the things that seemed logical. it's a late 2007 MacBook. I bought it used from a friend and they never had this issue. It was wiped clean and when I got it, after about 5 LONG uses, it randomly shut down once. I installed Snow Leopard, updated to 10.6.8, then the problem started. The fan seems to be running fine. The problem occurs weather it's plugged in or not, so I'm pretty positive it's not the battery. I've done the PRAM reset and the SMC reset.. I also took the computer apart and cleaned it. Performed the SMC reset again and it seems to be working for right now. Hopefully that's all it needed but if the problem continues does anyone have any suggestions on what it may be? Thanks.

Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
I hope I answered your question.

Why does my iPad keep on turning off

It basically works as if nothings wrong, until about a minute into using it it turns off then retarts and repeat....

  • Why does "Baskerville Regular" keep getting turned off?

Since upgrading to Mavericks, Baskerville Regular -- the font used by the Dictionary (V2.2.1/156) -- keeps getting turned off.  Result: when I open the Dictionary, all definitions etc. appear in bold.
All is fine if I open FontBook and turn Baskerville Regular back on again -- until I restart.  Then I have to do it over again.
The problem is on a per-user basis.  If I turn the font in on my account, stay logged in, and log in from another account, the font is turned off in that account.
Something’s turning it off.  Anyone know what?
    Thanks

It is probably related to your other post about being dropped off from the internet.

Yes I have turned imessage off a number of times and that does not seem to he doing the trick, and it is not delivering them then I have to press on the photo and either chose try again or send as text message, I have had the setting on to not allow sending pictures as texts (so they can only send as imessage) since I got my phone in January and it has always worked until now, I have turned that off to allow me to send them as picture messages now but it's still not working over iMessage, I have also tried it using 3G and not wifi

Depending on the age and use of the phone, this could be a battery problem and you should get your battery checked by visiting an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider next to your place.

  • Why does my MacBook keep turning off Airport?

For the past few days my Airport on my MacBook has been turning off. There are four other Mac laptops that access the same Wi-Fi in the house, and none of them have this issue. There are also five iPads of varying age, a few iPods and four iPhones (we are only on Apple products at this time). None have this issue.
To start: YES, I have turned it off and on again! I work IT, mainly with radios, but I know that step is the first to be asked. I have turned it ALL off and then on again. Please, do not insult my intelligence by asking that question.
When I go into "Network Preferences" and look, there is no connection, and nothing I do turns it on. I then turn Airport off and on again, select the only network the computer has ever been connected to (it never leaves the house), and then it works. I am getting a little frustrated with the whole issue. Any suggestions?
It is a white, 2009 MacBook, 15 inch. It is running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8.
Thanks for looking at the post!

Resetting the NVRAM could solve the problem.

Or Finder Go menu  > Goto... ~/Library/Preferences then delete the files called "com.apple.internetconfig.plist" and "com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist" then reboot coud solve the problem.

  • Why does my Satellite C655D-S5300 turn off randomly after about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours

Was wondering why my laptop turns off randomly for no reason.  It does this even if no battery is connected and the AC adapter is connected.  It starts right up again if I press the power button but only lasts for an hour or so then shuts down again?  When it starts I do hear the fan going and the system works just fine until it randomly shuts down.  Upon restarting the usual windows error indicated improper shut down happened.  Could it be a bios problem or a virus?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Peter,
Well, I finally gave up and took it into a professional repair place who simply updated the BIOS and that solved the problem.  Runs like a champ now.  I should have checked that before taking it in...would have been a quick fix and saved
$100.  Oh well, thanks for the reply.

  • HT3819 why does home sharing seem to turn off randomly?

It always happens at some point, sometimes 2 or 3 times during the same movie or music mix and I invariably have to go to my Macbook and turn off home sharing then turn it back on.... It never seems to be my comcast provider or wireless router. So what is the fix???

    Hello there Garry2,
Here is a little gem for troubleshooting Home Sharing in iTunes called Troubleshooting Home Sharing found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2972.
I recommend starting at step 4:
    4. Check your network connection
    5. Check Firewall Settings
    6. Quit and reopen apps and iTunes
    7. Restart your network router
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Why does my Macbook keeps freezing?

I've had my macbook since thanksgiving 2008 and I have added a few programs to it. Nothing major since I am not a heavy computer user. I've noticed over the past several weeks that I can be in the middle of a webpage or a program and the computer stops working. At first my bluetooth mouse would stop working and I would go and disconnect and reconnect it and it was fine but now the mouse stops working and the whole screen freezes. I have to do the command-option-esc command to get my computer to shut down. I have no idea why it does this all of a sudden or what to do to fix this. Please help.

To get an over all idea of available disk space ...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.
Have you tried turning off the Mouse and just using the Trackpad to see if there are problems?
Also, try logging in to a different use and see if the issue continues. If not, then the problem is isolated to your user account. Go to System Preferences/Accounts. Click the gold padlock icon. You will be prompted for your admin password. Click the + button. Create a new user and click; Create Account. Then log on to that account.
This is starting to sound more like an internet related issue. Go to ~Library/Input Managers and delete at least one thing like CoolIris. Quit all applications and restart your MacBook.
Launch Firefox or Safari and see if it quits on you.

  • HT4623 Why does my iPad keep bumping me off the app I am on.  Have to keep going back in over and over.

Why does my mini pad keep bumping me off apps and I have to completely go back in.?

App instability can usually be remedied by quitting all apps (Double tap the Home button and swipe the app preview page up)
    then
Reset: Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons and don’t let go until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears (no data will be lost)

  • Airport keeps randomly turning off and wont turn back on!

    Hey guys,
I've had this problem for a while now and it is driving me CRAZY!
I will be randomly surfing the net, and then all of a sudden airport will turn off! (the shape you get when you click turn off airport - not how it looks like when there is no connection)
So when I click on "turn airport on" but nothing happens! Almost like its not clickable.
I've surfed online and tried multiple things. from just restarting (which works but then it will disconnect another time) to Deleting airport completely, restarting, and reinstalling airport. This works but then 5 days later it will mess up again. (But now its started becoming once-twice a day!)
Yesterday I updated all of the wifi software updates and updated my mac update from 10.5.5 to 10.5.8, hoping this might be the problem, but it disconnected again!
I've also tried taking the battery out etc.. but nothing works!!!
    any suggestions?!
    Zahra

My daughter is having the same problem. She tells me it started from day one but so sublte she didn't think it was a software/hardware problem ( how could be its a brand new computer right) , and we bought it for her in 2008. The interruptions were not as often, and she didn't know it as well as she does now. She thought it had to do with our internet at home, and when she went to college it stopped. Inside the school network it doesn't fail, but this year she moved outside of campus and the problem has become a nuisance, like Zahra says, it's driving her crazy now. She went to apple store and of course the problem did not happen there. So they could not help her. They told her to delete all software and re-install, and so she did, but the first thing it did after that was turn off. It kicks her out of internet continuously, and the ariport light or signal turn off. The next step it was suggested was to replace airport for 175$ for the whole repair, and if it's not fixed they will refund, but what after that.
I read somewhere that security updating can cause these problems as well as others regarding non authorized changes in system preference network settings. Not sure if it was related to a problem with a bad airport specifically, but it does with connectivity issues and interruptions.
I think my daughter also updated from OS X 10.5.5 to 10.5.8, and her book is 2 years old. If someone can help Zahra, maybe you can help us too. Thank you.
Thanks to anyone that can help.
