Why does my macbook pro 13'' mid 2010 screen turns gray and freezes while connected to external monitor?

Every once in a while my macbook pro just randomly instantaneously freezes and the screen turns gray and it has only done it while connected to a high res 22'' Dell external monitor (so far). Usually when this happens I'm listening to music and I noticed my music continues to play but the keyboard is totally unresponsive forcing me to manually press the start button until the computer force shut's down. Luckily I havnt lost anything yet but I hate having to restart my macbook pro that way...just want to know if its a glitch in the software or if I have a more serious hardware problem. This problem has occured maybe 4 times since I got my macbook last summer 2010 so its not too bad, im just worried cause these computers aint cheap.

Duquan,
Macs can be picky about the RAM which they use; the “Your computer restarted because of a problem” message typically indicates a RAM problem. Since you have a Mid 2009 model, it should have 1066 MHz RAM installed rather than 1333 MHz RAM. If your RAM was mislabeled, then that might cast some doubt upon the quality control which that RAM manufacturer uses. My suggestion would be to purchase 1066 MHz RAM from a reputable manufacturer.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012 version run quite slowly?

I used to have a Windows PC, which ran VERY VERY VERY slowly. I heard that Macs did not get viruses and ran very quickly, so I bought a brand new MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012 version (entry level). At first it was running quite smoothly, but after some time it became slower, with boot ups taking about 2-3 minutes, instead of the 30 seconds boot up time I kept on hearing on Internet reviews. Is the RAM (4GB) insufficient? Or is 30 seconds just exaggerated? Launching apps can take quite a while, especially graphics intensive apps such as iMovie. Opening folders in my thumb drive can be quite a pain too, seeing as there is a lot of visible lag in the opening of files and folders.

Boot times of 2-3 minutes are a little slow, my 15" doesn't do 30 seconds but faster than 2-3 minutes.  From your comments about how you are using the MBP, the entry level model may not have been the best choice...the 13" models have only one graphic processor, the 15" models have two.  The normal-usage Intell 4000 and a discrete AMD that kicks in with graphic intensive software.  If you are going to do a lot of video and games, the discrete processor will be a big help.  Also, 4 GB ram is often more than adequate, but some software really benefits from more ram.
You can check the ram usage, and cpu usage, by going to Launchpad, Utilities, Activity Monitor.  See what the memory usage is with your software open and active...is the ram being used fully, are there a lot of page ins and page outs?  That means it is using the mass storage as it runs out of memory space.  If that is the case, increasing the ram to 8 GB will help.
The Activity Monitor can also show you the load on the cpu so that gives an idea of how much you are pushing the system.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro OS X.9.1 Mavericks shadow and Safari.app Blocks It!?

Why does my Safari.app block the Dock!?

    Hello, PJCPace.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here are some troubleshooting steps that I would try when experiencing this issue.
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Safari: Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

  • MacBook Pro 17inch - mid-2010 - screen graphics garbled

So my screen goes garbled and I have to either turn it off and back on OR (strangely enough) drag one of the application windows around the screen like a dry eraser on a white board - for a while, there's a graphic echo, creating a cool pattern of images of the app window all over the screen, then it eventually starts to act like a dry eraser, cleaning off the 'echoes' and causing the screen to appear as normal.
So I've seen this discussion before and seen people offer a variety of solutions. Some say it's hardware, and suggest replacing the NVIDIA card, others say try command+option+p+r. Some say it's RAM - I've noticed it does occur more often when my RAM useage is peaking (whilst watching the Activity monitor), but it doesn't always happen like that! I have 8Gb of RAM installed, so not sure how it can happen - anything more than 5 or 6 tabs open on Safari PLUS having Skype open, and the system goes crazy! Whilst the machine is registering 8GB, could it be possible one or both of the 4 GB cards are corrupt?
I've had the logic board replaced, and the screen replaced. Haven't tried replacing the NVidia card yet.
Have used Apple for ages but not really a techie, so not sure what info to provide to you awesome tech-heads. I"ve attached some screen-captures ...
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is strange indeed. Yes, RAM could be at issue. If this is not the original RAM, install it. If it is, remove one module, try running; switch that same module to the other slot, try running; repeat with other module.
The GPU cannot be replaced. It's soldered onto the logic board; thus, if you've had you logic board replaced, the GPU was replaced.

  • Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010 freezes ,hang , not respond

    HI all!
Im a owner of Macbook Pro 13 MID 2010 and mine has same problems
System freeze ,mouse blocked, keyboard light off, keyboard blocked, only power off by button.
It happens randomly with aplications or only in finder ,or once was at start up after login ...
But i can work 3 days or more without problems,so for technical service will be difficult to see it.
Im a professional musician and i make my performances for a hundred of people with a laptop so i cant risk a set with this laptop no more...
Y tried to reinstall system, same problems...
    I think is a hardware in 13 ,15 and 17 macbook pro 2010.
I will not accept a hard drive repair,i will request a new unit.
It only has 2 months......And as my job depends of a laptop, i need a new one.
Now im again working with my old Powerbook G4 (2002) and still goes perfect !!!!
BTW: check this link, apple is returning new unots tosome users with same problems
    http://appletoolbox.com/2010/05/continued-macbook-pro-mid-2010-beach-ballsfreeze s-apple-replacing-testing-units/
    By the way
    It happens with 10.6.3 and 10 6.4
    Hardware test OK!!
And just system installed with no aplications...
I only use Traktor NAtive instrumentes for my performances....all original software.
Freezes were with traktor and without it on system....
External hard druve boot tested and also freezes.
Repair permissions and the same problem.....
APPLE,PLEASE, YOU CAN DISCOUNT TO ME A MONTH OF USE ,BUT I DONT WANT THIS UNIT FOR SURE.

    Hi,
I've been having the same problem. I'm a Dj, like a lot of people I use Traktor Scratch Pro. I've been using a mac for mixing for around, 2 years now, never had a problem. Since I updated to leopard snow, I've been experiencing the exact same problems described in this post, the screen freezes, sudden dropouts, when using Traktor software exact same thing, audio dropouts, screen freezes when loading track, or searching library.
I've been doing a LOT of researching, and I'm almost sure the problem is Leopard Snow, I don't know why but I'm almost certain. I erased mi HD, thinking this would solve the problem, loaded snow leopard again... EXACT same problem occured.
I tried all the suggestions in this link, none of them worked for me... http://appletoolbox.com/2010/07/mac-os-x-10-6-4-troubleshooting-guide/
So, right now I'm downloading an older version of MAC OS 10.5.5, I will format (again) my HD and install this older version.
I will post again if this solved the issue, hope this helps.
Apple URGENTLY needs a new update (10.6.5) there are a lot of other people like us, that are depending in a lap top (mac) to perform to a lot of people, you can check the forums in www.native-instruments.com, and see this issue is hapening to many of us.

  • GPU panic MacBook Pro 15'' Mid-2010

    Cheers to all,
This is not the first, but I believe not the last thread about this issue. So here we go, I'm having GPU Panic attacks, and yes my MacBook Pro is Mid-2010, and yes it has a motherboard issue (like on most of the threads, symptoms are the same). Reasons why I'm writing are actually three:
    1. After having a chat with official Apple representative online, I was suggested to go to official Apple repair shop for diagnosis, so I've went and voila I need to change motherboard on my laptop. In France they evaluated it 560 euros, when my used laptop here costs around 600-800 euros - doesn't seem logical to me, but ok, I'd be willing to pay this money if not one phrase told by representative in the shop: "Warranty for new motherboard would be 3 months"... it means that I'd pay more than a half of the price of my laptop is worth now, for something that is not sure to be working properly e.g. in half of the year?? (here on forums people speak about that replacing motherboard is not always the solution, since one that'll be replaced can be faulty as well)
    2. Another point to say, is that I've noticed these errors appearing not after Mountain Lion, and not after installing Mavericks (or updates to it), but after doing SMC (System Management Control) reset (was suggested to do it by Blizzards in order to increase performance for their games - actually did help) somewhere in February. Another interesting observation is that when I've did it second time couple of days ago my GPU Panic errors had started to appear not once per week (fyi after first times, I've started using gfxCard, forcing my GT330M to run all the time), but now two times per days (latest one is below). Can there be a link of these errors to SMC?
    3. Would some of you recommend me a solution for my MacBook Pro without paying 560 euros for something that'd have warranty of 3 months? At this points my hopes are that this issue would be resolved in Yosemite - or wouldn't it? (seems like people who started receiving these errors in Mountain Lion didn't have resolutions after installing Mavericks) It's just sad, since it seems to me that the only solutions is actually getting rid of my good ol' laptop...
3.1. Little P.S. question here: laptops that just have Intel graphic chips (e.g. 13'' inch one) can't experience this sort of errors at all?
    Specs of my MacBook Pro:
    W8******AGW
    MacBook Pro 6,2
    2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
8GB 800 MHz DDR3 (this one I've changed myself in beginning of 2012)

    zhanghang0529,
Before, I'd want to receive reply on that topic from someone who had done it, because I don't want to create extra problems with downgrade.
Concerning 'temporary' solutions: yeah, they work, like gfxCard, heating the GPU unit for some people (althouth I find it a little extreme), but it's not as it should be, this is not native idea that was born in Apple design offices. And I want to laptop to work as it was designed to work...
About new laptop: call me old school, but I prefer things to be fixed before really getting rid of them. I went to local Apple authorized repair shop, but as in your case, they could only recommend me to buy new motherboard or the new laptop.

  • Macbook pro of mid 2010 acting up

    Hi all,
so I have a 13" Macbook pro of mid 2010 on the latest version of Lion .4 I believe and over the past few days its really become un usable in the way that applications lag like crazy and then close randomly on their own and I cant understand what could be causing this at all, even though I do plan to buy a 15" retina display mbp I would still like to get this working as I plan to give it away,
I have ESET anti virus installed I use a few irc clients and also I use cleanmy mac on a regular basis before backing up with time machine, I know there is a known problem with google that makes it shut down on its own so I dont think that part is the macs fault but I really dont understand why its lagging so badly to the point where I have to use my brothers windows machine to type this thread. Also I do tend to keep my macbook on all the time I just close the lid during the night, could that be why? overheating or problems not shutting down? The computer came with snow lep and has never had a problem like this before and I have been doing the same thing for over 2 years so I dont know why suddenly now its failing.
any help would be appreciated, TIA

Thanks for your reply, I thought cleanMyMac was good because its saving a tone of wasted data thats just not needed and has saved me over 50GB so far? I know anti viruses are probably not needed but I think with the growing popularity of the mac and also apple thinking they need to introduce features where you can only download from the app store it might make it needed.. I shall try remove it and see if it helps

  • Can't boot MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) after installing the update SMC 1.6

First for a long time was a white screen and noisy cooler
After the system battery icon was crossed out and the indicator on the left side of macbook does not show anything and everything worked cooler at high speed (he was cold macbook)
After reboot appeared and the system has stopped running
Few days ago I have installed Mac Os X 10.6.4 but when the system had started working I saw my desktop it was at least 2-3 sec, after that macbook went to sleep mode. I pressed any key macbook and system started working, but without lighting screen. I used bright lamp and saw that all shortcuts and indicators (like wifi, battery etc.) have appeared on my desktop. After 2-3 sec macbook went to sleep mode again. Pressing on buttons and light from lamp gave me possibility to done update to 10.6.5 and after to 10.6.8. But at the end situation was not changed.
When I boot macbook with using install DVD, I can use all utilities (disk utility, network util etc.) and macbook don't goes to sleep mode and screen has light. In my opinion reason of this - not correct installation latest EFI or SMC updates. I tried to install EFI update 2.0 and SMC 1.5 for 10.6.5/10.6.8, but system showed me that I can't do this update. I'll try to find some way to make EFI update, maybe this would help me solve this problem. P.S. answer from Applle support: Our updates can't to break your macbook... it's just coincidence. Probability theory it's just mystification
this is info about my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) MC374ll/A. As you can see I have SMC version 1.68f99 instead 1.62f7
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 - I found information about right version SMC for my MacBook Pro mid 2010 13" from this table.
If somebody has same problem, welcome to discussion. Maybe we'll find way to solve this problem... Or Apple will make fixes for us.

After some time, I found answer how I can repair my MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010). As I was writing early - Mac Os X update SMC 1.6 broke my computer.
This is a link on repair instructions: http://habrahabr.ru/sandbox/67092/
As a result I write this post on my old (but working) MacBook Pro.

  • Wake up problem. Macbook pro 15'', mid 2010, entry model with HR screen

My model is macbook pro 15'', mid 2010 with HR screen. I just used it for about two weeks.
If I close the lid and open it after a short time, everything is fine. But, if I close the lid and leave it for a long period (mostly overnight, sometimes with power adapter connected, sometimes without), then, when I open the lid, nothing happens. I can not hear anything from the harddisk, but the sleep indicator light is on (without flash). Then they only thing I can do is to hold the power button and turn it off. Then, I can turn it on and the system will recover from the safe sleep.
Although my data is safe but this is really annoying. I have tried to repair the permission but it does not work. Is there any solution to this? Or this is about the hardware?

  • Macbook Pro (13" mid 2010) unable to connect to home wifi?

    Hi everyone
I have a Macbook pro 13" mid 2010. Up until recently, airport was able to connect to my home wifi. I have not changed anything on the home wifi network.
The laptop is on 10.6.8, with all software updates installed.
I have recently installed boot camp onto this laptop and did a software update. Could that be a problem?
    Attempted solutions:
    1 PRAM reset
    2 Disabling IPv6
3 Reboot laptop and restart modem/router
4 Deleting all keychain networks and passwords
5 Deleting networks from Network Settings/Advanced Settings
    6 Using Assist Me option
7 Changing home wifi network from WPA to WPA2
8 Changing home wifi broadcast channel to a less used channel
9 Connecting to another landline network (also did not work)
Surprisingly, I am able to connect to my mobile phone's wifi tether. My monthly data usage limit isn't very high and this isn't a real option.
Normally what happens, is I enter the password to join the wireless network and it'll give me a Connection timed out error message.
I have 5 other PCs in the house that can connect to the network, my MBP is the only mac and the only one that cannot connect. My android mobile phone can connect, my sister's iPhone 3GS can connect.
Can anyone help? Or suggest something I may have missed?

I have the same MBP Version 7.1 that you have and it also states in the System Profiler HDMI Display port
Output: Connection : Display. Now what that means, im not sure.
But i have also connected an HDMI cable via an adapter made by iWires Tech Link purchased at the Apple store and have the same problem as you, only video with no sound from the TV.
I've looked at the settings that eww has suggested in System Preferences > Sound > Output tab and their is no options available for HDMI out, or Display Audio or anything else for that matter, except built in speakers, and Audio port for sound output.
Which lead me to use the Audio port to send the sound out via an amp and speaker system independent to the TV.
Thats why i researched for the other adapters which send out the sound and the audio through the same adapter.

  • Maximum hard drive physical size for MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 model

I'm planning to replace the hard drive in a MacBook Pro 13" mid-2010 - its the latest model just purchased.
I've searched the discussions on replacing the hard drive, and I've seen conflicting information on whether the 13.3" Macbook Pro will accept the 12.5mm height drives, or only the 9.5mm height drives.
And Apple support is no help - they don't know.
Can someone confirm exactly, whether the 12.5 mm drives will fit or not?

Thanks everyone - it looks like you've answered my question, and I'll mark it as such.
I think that my confusion is related to the mac terminology that you guys are using that I am not familiar with yet - I'm brand new to the world of Apple and Macs, so I've got a lot to learn ahead of me.
"S.U.", you said "The 12.5 mm drives will fit in all unibody MBP's". What is a "unibody" MacBook Pro? The one I have is the aluminum shell, not the older black or white case that appears to be some sort of plastic.
In another thread, you mentioned that you have 2 drives in your MacBook Pro. Is there really room for more than a single drive inside, or did you have to remove the optical drive and put the second drive in its place?
"eww", you mentioned "And it doesn't affect the computer's warranty". When I talked with Apple support about replacing the drive, they said that there are no user-serviceable parts in a MacBook Pro, and it might void my warranty to replace the hard drive. I pointed out that they have several documents at the "Manuals" section of their website, explaining the exact steps to replace the hard drive (as well as memory and battery too), with no mention of voiding the warranty.
Is Apple support always so out of touch with their own web site and their own equipment/policies, or are they usually quite knowledgeable and helpful? I'd like to think that I can count on them when I have questions harder than "where's the ON button". But to their credit, they did mention that I visit these forums to see if anyone here could help.
"OrangeMarlin", you mentioned cloning the old drive first, and I plan to do that. The MacBook Pro is brand new, and has not been used yet, so there is no user data to be lost yet, but it would still be easier to clone the drive than try to install from scratch and hope that everything gets installed the same way as the factory drive came packed with.
While on the topic of cloning the drive and backups, I have plenty of external drives to do backups onto, but how do I go about doing backups/cloning? I've heard of "time machine", but it looks like I need a whole dedicated hardware system of some sort in order to use it? Or can I use it with any external hard drives? Or is there a better/preferable backup tool to use, and does it come with the mac, or must I get it separately?

  • Macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again

macbook pro 15" mid 2010 i spilled water on keyboard now it wont power on if the battery is connected and the keys on keyboard doesnt work it works fine with no battery and external keyboard if i order a battery and new keyboard will every else work again lik it did before

If you have records that show that you've taken your MacBook Pro in for a year to fix the machine, I would escalate the problem to Apple Customer Relations - unfortunately I don't have a number for Spain.
It would only seem logical to me that if you've been trying to have the machine repaired during the time that the 'recall' was in effect that you should be eligible for a new logic board. But only customer relations will be able to make that call.
Good luck - take the issue as high up the food chain as you can and see what happens.
    Clinton

  • Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2010 Random restarts

hi guys, about 2 years ago I spilt water over my laptop, I was like a ninja on speed powering off disconnecting the batter, and disembling this unit. allowed it to dry out over the course of 2 days, re-built and it was working perfect, about 9 months ago my laptop restarted and through up the "your computer restarted becuase of a poblem...." didnt think much of it (i know dumb) it started happening more regualr, i formatted and re-installed the OS and left it as a new mac. recently it has been getting more and more often so much so if i run Safari, photoshop and uTorrent, it kernal panics. I have pasted below the kernal panic, i understand it problably will be due to liquid but I would like to find out exactly where the issue lays and what with.
Thanks for all everyones help in advance.

The kernel panic indicates that your GPU has failed. This is a known issue for your machine. Your model is subject to a replacement program for the logicboard due to a defective GPU. It lasts 3 years from the date of purchase. If this is already expired, Apple may or may not still replace your logicboard. It is ultimately at the discretion of the store manager. If you don't qualify, your other option would be a flat rate repair, for ~$300, which Apple will repair anything wrong with the machine for this fee. See the user tip and support article below:

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • MacBook Pro 13', Mid 2010 freezing all the time

I have MacBook Pro 13', Mid 2010 running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. It freezes at least twice a day, I need to push the power button until it restarts every time. Already did the hardware test twice, it says it's all fine... so where is the problem?! I don't have any time to loose going to the Apple Store and giving away my computer for a check up. Anyone experiencig similar problems?
