Why does my macbook pro suddenly go to sleep while I am using it

My 2009 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo will suddenly go to sleep (or so it seems) while I am using it - like mousing or typing on it.  It is difficult to get it to wake up.  I either have to hit the space bar repeatedly or hit the on button a couple of time before it wakes up again.
Running Lion Mountain.  All updates loaded.
8 Gig of ram.

Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.  Have you checked your Energy Saver preferences?  Done a SMU reset?   Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Why does my Macbook Pro destabilize after hibernation sleep?

Over the last several months using Mountain Lion, I decided to completely drain my battery to reset it. I think it then goes into what is called hibernation or emergency sleep mode. I am usually unable to wake it from sleep prompting a forced resstart.
to restart, I connect the adapter and the light goes green quickly changing to amber as expected. After the restart, however, some top menu items are missing such as the wi-fi icon and the Lock Keychain icon. All third party icons display correctkly. The space is there but blank and I can access the pulldown menu by clicking in those blank areas.. When double clicking the HD icon in the Finder, no icons show on the left side any more. A restart does not fix the problem. The system then eventually destabilizes to the point that I have to restore from my Firewire external HD clone using SuperDuper. One time I did a full restore (that takes forever even with a very fast wi-fi set up) to fix the problem.
I am usually in Safari or playing a Game such as a third party card game application to pass the time until the battery completely drains. I also have Filevault enabled.
Why is the MacBook Pro battery reset causing this OS instability? How can I reset the battery without encountering these sleep issues?

    Thank you Dale.
This article mentions that recalibration should be done every two months. I think I waited 4-6 months before doing a recalibration on purpose. Though I probably ran out the battery power before then recharging overnight (some commenters on Apple Discussions said to wait 5 hours before recharging!).
I think that my battery goes into a forced shutdown rather than true sleep. Your linked thread states that this often causes directory damage. But I ran DiskWarrior and Disk Utility immediately after the stated problems occurred. And these programs pretty much repair any directory damage. But they failed to correct the problems I listed in my original post.
So I question the conclusion that not calibrating every two months caused irreparable directory damage that even DiskWarrior or Disk Utility cannot repair. The damage appears more extensive than this in my opinion.
The battery is only a year old with 92.35% of its original current capacity and 537 cycles. The current charge is over 6350 at 99.47%. It will eventually go to 100%. I can run over 4 hours of normal usage on a single battery charge.
Side note -- to my knowledge, nothing in the original MacBook Pro manual suggests that the battery requires regular recalibration of any kind to maintain the integrity of the battery. Much less every two months. If this is a requirement or even highly recommended, then Apple has done a good job hiding this information. And the available recalibration information varies from one type of battery to the next and is often inconsistent.
Apple's comments in the past support the idea that recalibration improves efficiency and fixes some battery issues as they occur, but that it is not manditory to maintain the health of the battery.
Do you have an official battery recalibration source (preferably Apple) that indicates regular battery recalibration is crucial and exactly how this must be done for MacBooks with builtin batteries?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro randomly go to sleep?

Hey everyone. I just recently noticed that in the middle of doing normal things on my MacBook Pro, it goes to sleep randomly. I have the 2.4ghz 13" 2010  model. It happened twice so far within a 10 minute period. It has happened while charging through the AC adapter. It wakes up fine like usual, and when i close the lid and open it up, it actually wakes up faster than normal. I'm wondering if i should contact apple, or bestbuy (i have a 4 year warranty there). Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Why does my MacBook Pro go back to sleep just after it wakes up?

My MacBook Pro (OSX 10.7.5, 13" late 2011 model) tends to go to sleep about 15 seconds after it wakes up.  I open the cover, type in my password, pull up email or web browser, and suddenly the screen goes black & the computer is back in sleep mode.  It takes a few mouse clicks or hitting space or return to get it to wake up so I can reenter the password.  After that it seems to work fine.  Any ideas on what might be the problem?

OS X is not loading for some reason off the drive.
Normally you would see a gray screen with a spinning circle, but the gray screen splash is held in EFI firmware and loaded first.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro suddenly turn really really slow and make a really loud fan noise?

Whenever I turn on my MacBook is runs perfectly fine for 2 minutes but then it turns really slow (to the point that it takes ages to move the mouse cursor and to type) and make a really loud fan noise. What should I do to fix this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's a process that is taking up the RAM and CPU. Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), and select "All Processes" above "Show" in the toolbar. Then, order processes by CPU, and tell me which processes you see that are consuming more CPU

  • Why does my macbook pro retina take 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid?

For some reason it takes my macbook like 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid.  I cant move the mouse or anything until like 30 seconds go by is that normal or something wrong?  Its the new macbook retina display and never had this problem when i first got it.

Are you running any applications when you open the lid, specifically any applications that are heavy on GPU usage such as iMovie or Photoshop?

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers
    Kerry

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime?

Why does my MacBook Pro make background music and video quieter when I am on FaceTime? When my girlfriend and I are trying to watch a movie on Netflix together while on FaceTime my MacBook Pro always decreases the volume of any background sound on my computer so I can barely hear it. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you!

Have the same issue too. Apple can you please change this annoying feature. You are making long distance relationships more difficult.
I like how Facetime was with the old iOS, where nothing was dimmed. OR at least maybe if you could give users the option to turn on or off dimming of facetime.

  • Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging?

Why does my macbook pro "goes to sleep" when charging? It is working fine without charging but once I attach the charger to my laptop, it just blacks out or goes to sleep mode and I can't wake it up unless I unpluck the charger.
I read from threads that it is a logic board problem....How do I solve this problem?

Try an SMC reset. Follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

  • Why does my macbook pro get hot

Why does my Macbook pro get hot while I am only on my email account?  This is a recent change.  It gets too hot too put in my lap.  Is it a battery issue.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro spit out a CD

Why does my MacBook pro eject a CD without downloading it?

You rip a CD.  You download something over a network connection.
Could be doing it because the CD is bad.  Test the CD in another computer.
Could be doing it because the drive is bad or dirty.  Try a drive cleaning disc but don't hold out too much hope.  Try other CDs in the drive to see if it is the drive or that particular CD.
As with any issue of this sort you have to test each step and component in the process individually.

  • Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

Why does my Macbook Pro keep shutting down during installation of OSX Mountain Lion?

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...

why does my macbook pro retina display shutdown while entering the administer account

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
