Why does my macbook pro turn off randomly?

So i recently had to get a new harddrive in my macbook pro 13 inch 2012 model. It's been constantly shutting off in the middle of me doing anything! I have no idea what it could be! Also, when I'm on the internet, it is unbearably lagey and slow. I just want to know the situation and what it may be. I no longer am on apple care or have a warrenty because i forgot to renew it. I have the updated version of mavericks and i was thinking that may be it. Thanks!

Hi eightyoctane,
If you are having intermittent power issues with your Thunderbolt display, you may want to make sure that all available updates have been installed, as outlined in the following articles for somewhat similar issues:

  • Why does my MacBook Pro turn off by itself?

I bought my MacBook Pro 13" on August 26th 2011. Later that day while I was using it, the screen went off and it was silent. I moved the cursor because I thought maybe it went to sleep mode, but it stayed off. I waited a while and then hit a key to try to wake it up. Nothing happened. I hit the power button after about 4 minutes. Still, nothing happened. After about 10 minutes, it powered up and was on the "Log-In Screen". I logged in and everything was fine.
This is my first Apple product and I didn't know much about it so I asked a friend who has had a MacBook for a long time. She said that it was normal and that it's updating or something. "/ I didn't fully believe that, but since my computer was seemingly fine after that I didn't worry.
This random shutting down has happened several times since then and it is VERY annoying to be in the middle of typing a document and have your laptop just cut off only to come back on when it FEELS like it. It happens when I have in the power cord AND when I don't. My battery lasts for an extremely long time so I don't think I have a problem with the battery.
I've read several people's posts on this topic and I'm not really understanding the problem. I bought my laptop from my school's bookstore. I have never dropped my laptop, no water damage, etc. I have the AppleCare Protection Plan, but I don't know how many times you can have your laptop looked at before you lose the plan. Is this worth getting my computer looked at???

Call them ASAP, that is what you paid for.  AppleCare

Yes, unless you don't mind your mac randomly shutting down.
    Please, call AppleCare.

  • MacBook Pro Turns off Randomly Only when logged in OSX 10.8.2

    Hi,
I have a 2010 Macbook pro with Mountain Lion 10.8.2. For a couple of weeks now, when its not plugged in to AC it turns off randomly, not at any specific battery%.
Things I have tried already that were not helpful:
    - System profiler battery: 374 cycles, Battery Status: Normal
    - SMC reset
    - Clean install of Mountain Lion without any Migraion of old System files (wanted to do this anyways before the problem arose)
    - Its does not seem to be a heating issue, has happened at low temperatures
What I have noticed is that if I either run the diagnostics at startup or enter to recovery mode, I can run the battery all the way to 0% (lasts a while) and this random swtiching off doesn't occur. It only happens when I am logged in to OSX. This makes me think its not a battery issue either.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro shut off when I close it?

When I am done using my MacBook Pro I would usually just shut the lid and the MacBook would then go into sleep mode. In other words later when I pick it up and open it the MacBook screen will light and I can begin using it immediately. However, lately when I shut the lid the MacBook will shut off completely and I will need to push the power button to turn it on again. I am curious as to what may be causing this? Any help or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Reset your SMC, as described here:

  • Why does my MacBook pro turn on but nothing on screen?

As of recent I sprayed my keyboard with flash. (surface cleaner) thinking it would be harmless. It worked as it normally would but the next day I turned it on the keyboard lights had started to stop working and then so did the function of typing. So in the meantime I've bean using a USB keyboard and that started to work but it turns out It doesn't want to even do that. So as I couldn't use it just got stored away till I find out how it can be repaired and how much it would be (dread to think) 2weeks later I thought id boot it up and all I hear is the fan even when the lid is closed which is odd. Yet the screen dosent show anything. At the beginning I used a hair dryer to the keyboard and it did start to work but then I had to use USB
Even though it was a small amount of liquid it couldn't surley cause that much damage?!
Please if anyone has had similar problems or knows what it could be. Message me. Peace :D

    Ah...
Did you go to your Energy Savings and turn off "Wake for Network Access"?
When you turn off Airport, then shutdown the computer, does the computer still wake back up?
Download OnyX and run all the cleaning features, you can cancel the restart to do another cleaning, just make sure you restart when finished.
Also there is a Preference File check under the "Verify" icon of OnyX, check the box that says "show only corrupt preference files"
If you get any, write them down and later find them in the Finder and just delete them, they will be rebuilt when you restart the machine.
Note you will have to reenter the preferences for that particular program or process again manually.

  • Why does my MacBook keep turning off Airport?

For the past few days my Airport on my MacBook has been turning off. There are four other Mac laptops that access the same Wi-Fi in the house, and none of them have this issue. There are also five iPads of varying age, a few iPods and four iPhones (we are only on Apple products at this time). None have this issue.
To start: YES, I have turned it off and on again! I work IT, mainly with radios, but I know that step is the first to be asked. I have turned it ALL off and then on again. Please, do not insult my intelligence by asking that question.
When I go into "Network Preferences" and look, there is no connection, and nothing I do turns it on. I then turn Airport off and on again, select the only network the computer has ever been connected to (it never leaves the house), and then it works. I am getting a little frustrated with the whole issue. Any suggestions?
It is a white, 2009 MacBook, 15 inch. It is running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8.
Thanks for looking at the post!

Resetting the NVRAM could solve the problem.

Have the same issue too. Apple can you please change this annoying feature. You are making long distance relationships more difficult.
I like how Facetime was with the old iOS, where nothing was dimmed. OR at least maybe if you could give users the option to turn on or off dimming of facetime.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

    Hmm, good luck then!
I'm pretty much exactly on the opposite side of the planet, but I've been to Vermont and remember its rural beauty well. However, I can't imagine you having the only Internet connection within a reasonable radius (where "neighbors" hanging off the same ISP don't count). Uh, that note only if your wired connection to the router produces no good result, either...
