Why does my MBP get the grey screen after backing up to external hard drive???

(firstly, i'm a complete moron on terminal, though i managed to unlock the external HD. i appreciate the simplicity of mac, i.e. a moron in many ways.)
for some bizarre reason, every time i copy files to the external HD, i end up with a lock on the external HD and the dreaded spinning grey screen when i restart the MBP. i've managed to get rid of the grey screen by reinstalling with the snow leopard DVD without formatting, but this is obviously not practical. am i doing something wrong??
the last time i did this, i dragged my "user" files. then i dragged my entire internal HD into a folder created in my external HD. i've done this with my powerbook and older OS without issues, but OS 10.5 and 10.6 don't seem to work without ending up with the spinning grey screen and a lock on the HD.
thanks in advance for your input. (and please keep it simple...)

no, but it's definitely not due to a corrupt external drive. this happened with two different brands of drives. the first time with a lacie, i thought my MBP hard drive was damaged, but it was determined that a reinstall was all it needed. the same thing happened with an OWC. they both work fine. there seems to be some kind of a permission problem which gets screwed up somwhere.

  • How do I get the pictures from my iPhoto on my external Hard Drive to show up in the already existing iPhoto on my MacBook?

I have an early 2008 MacBook. I had been using iPhoto on this MacBook until I purchased an iMac in 2011, at which time I copied my iPhoto Library from my MacBook to my iMac. Then I realized that my pictures and music were consuming the memory on my iMac, so I moved iPhoto and my iTunes LIbrary to an external Hard Drive. Now I am in a situation where I do not have access to my iMac, but will need to use my MacBook as my main computer for the next year. So, I have my iPhoto on an external hard drive and I plug it into my MacBook and see the iPhoto Library folder, but when I click on it, it opens up the old iPhoto that is still existing on my MacBook and will not show any of the new pictures?! At first I thought it wasn't able to show up anything because my MacBook was running two operating systems behind what my iMac was when I was running my iPhoto Library from that computer. So, I upgraded to OS X 10.7.5 and upgraded the existing iPhoto on my MacBook to iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. However whenever I plug in the external hard drive and click on the iPhoto Library folder to open it up, it is still just opening up the already existing iPhoto on the MacBook (with my older pictures) rather than the iPhoto on the hard drive (with my newer pictures). How can I access my pictures that are on my external hard drive?

Thank you for your advice. I followed your directions, but came up with the same results. However, I did discover that whenever I open up the iPhoto Library that is already existing on my MacBook a certain set of pictures shows up. But then when I open up the iPhoto Library from the Hard drive another set of pictures shows up. BUT not ALL of my pictures are showing up on the iPhoto Library from the hard drive. At least the last two years of pictures are not showing up?! Actually, it appears that all the pictures are there from when I started using iPhoto about 5 years ago up until around the time that I got my iMac desktop computer and started using that (2 years ago). I have noticed that more recent videos I have made are showing up in a folder on the hard drive, but will not appear when I open up iMovie?! Any ideas on how to access my pictures from the last 2 years off of the hard drive???

  • Why does my Airport Extreme Base Station not recognize my iProDrive powered external hard drive?

My 500GB iprodrive is recognized when connected directly to any of my computers just fine. My AEBS recognizes flash drives just fine. But the two together don't work. I have tried reformatting to exfat, msdos(fat), extended, extended journaled, none work. Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem. Help?

Its a powered drive so I'm assuming thats not the problem.
I have to use a powered USB hub with a 1 TB LaCie hard drive when I connect it to the AirPort Extreme, otherwise the drive is not recognized.
However, I can connect the same hard drive directly to my MacBook Pro and it works just fine without the powered USB hub.
Try formatting the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled), also known as HFS+, and try using a powered USB hub when you connect the drive to the AEBS.
If that still won't work, then you have to assume that the drive is just not compatible with the USB port on the AEBS.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Why does my imac get a black screen when switching on

why does my imac get a black screen when turning on, and logging in is very slow.

I would first reset the SMC:
Shut down and unplug the Mac.
Keep the Mac unplugged for at least fifteen seconds.
Plug the Mac back in and do not turn it back on for at least five seconds.
Press the power button to turn the Mac back on.
Then I would reset the PRAM by rebooting the iMac while simultaneously holding the Command-Option-P-R keys until the machine restarts a second time.
Let us know if these  procedures don't solve the problems.
    Hope this helps

Does this also include the scenario where the grey screen has a picture of 2 disk drives?
One is labelled Macintosh HD and the other is Recovery HD.
The computer doesn't always start up like this but it has a few times now.

This screen shows up if your holding the option/alt key down or perhaps if it's stuck or damaged.
It's called Startup Manager and shows your bootable options.
Another possible cause is your PRAM is not remmebering the System Preferences > Startup Disk selection.
Do a #2 Reset PRAM and head to System Preferences > Startup Disk and set it and hopefully that should resolve the issue.

  • Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions??

Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions? if a thief got my phone he can hold 3 sec the home button and with siri he can call and do what every he wants..

    Thanks, you're my hero! :-)
The problem wasn't about the Restricitions because they are really irrelevant. The Problem was that i didn't had this Option to turn Siri off in the Touch ID & Passcode-Menu because i had to activate Siri first.
Here ist the way to deactivate Siri in the locked Screen:
[1] Settings > General > Siri > turn Siri on
[2] Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > ALLOW ACCESS WHEN LOCKED > turn Siri off

  • Laptop went for a swim, Help me get the contents of my time machined/boot camped hard drive back!

So unfortunately my old 13" MacBook Pro got a drink spilled across it a few months back. Mr Genius at the Apple store took one look inside and shook his head "Catastrophic failure, It's hit the fan and gone everywhere". But it wasnt all bad news, He did pull the hard drive out and told me to get an enclosure for it. So I have My hard drive in an enclosure and all the contents are there, I now have a new 13" Macbook Pro sitting in front of me which i purchased yesterday but its not all going to plan... I need help with 2 things.
    1. My Home folder on the mac side had file vault turned on.
It was running snow leopard OS X but I cant remember what version it was on at the time. What ever was out in March would be close enough. So I was hoping to boot from an external drive by restarting the computer, holding down option and then selecting which drive to boot from. It looks promising as I restart the computer with the hard drive unplugged and hold down option. Macintosh HD, Recovery HD come up, I plug in the external drive and Macintosh HD1 and Windows then appear as Yellow USB drives. BUT when I click on the Macintosh HD1 i get the grey screen with an apple on it but thats it.
Insert Ideas For Problem 1 Here.....
    2. The other half of the hard drive was dedicated to windows.
I'm an Engineer by trade and a lot of the software I use is windows based so I ran Windows 7 on half the hard drive. Booting from the external drive and selecting windows getsd a fair way into the start up process before i get a flicker of a blue screen and the whole computer re starts. What Im wondering is can I create a partition the same size as the old one and then just drop the contents of the external drive which was windows running on a partition in? It would be way easier than trying to start from scratch. I had all kinds of stuff going on in the windows side relating to connecting to the neetwork at work and I'd rather not go through it all again.
Any help or advice is much appreciated!

    LOL
Water ingress is a nasty thing, which is why it tends to do things like void warranties for example.
When a device like this gets fully immersed in water and is subsequently dried out, there can remain deposits of gunk on the circuit boards, which conduct electricity and thus contribute to discharging the battery much faster.
Water can even seep inside integrated circuits and wreak havoc in there.
Sooner or later your phone is going to give up the ghost so I suggest you start reading through the fine print on your home insurance policy to see if it covers appliances going for a swim without a swim suit.
A last-ditch operation you can try in an attempt to clean any impurities that may have deposited inside the phone, and I know this sounds nuts, is to drown it again, but this time in demineralized water (like the stuff you're supposed to put in your iron).
Take the battery out, dunk the phone in the water for a few minutes. Then take it out, drain it, stick it in a bowl and cover it in uncooked rice, put the bowl of phone risotto in a warm place (such as an airing cupboard) and leave it there to simmer for 48 hours.
One of three things will happen:
    1) Nothing. No better, no worse. At least you tried.
    2) Problem solved or at least situation improved. Yay!
    3) Phone worse off or maybe even completely dead. This was going to happen anyway sooner or later.
