Why does my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina latptop shut down during software installation/updates?
Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.

Macbook Pro Retina keeps shutting down during graphics intensive work
Today my macbook began shutting down while working with Aperture, Photoshop and while playing Borderlands 2. This hasn't happened at all until today.
Looking through some suggestions here I have:
Run 2 hardware tests with no negative results. Changed the screen resolution. Turned off Automatic Graphics switching.
However it keeps crashing - actually crashed 3 times while attempting to start it up last time. I've reset teh resolution and graphics switching - hoping someone out there may have an idea??? And I'm not using Google Chrome.

Thanks for any help you're able to give me.I'll give it a go Ogelthorpe. Ran the more intense hour long hardware test last night and then left it shut down overnight. No results again for the test, but this morning I've run it through a few minutes of borderlands 2 with no shut down. Strange. Am fully expecting it to start playing up again though.

Audio quality from mid 2012 macbook pro retina
I am trying to clarify what would be the best quality audio I can get from a Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012 (2.3 Ghz). Is the 3.5 mm jack capable of digital output (what spec) otherwise the HDMI digital audio must be a go. What spec does that offer please, and is it possible to input that into an external DAC somehow.

My screen has marks made by the keyboard when closed. I think is because possible desing flaw. Is a macbook pro retina mid 2012. Maybe the secreen is very close to the keyboard when close. It is a soft mark, but I´m sure it´s because the keyborad because is the same shape.
Thank youWhether they replace just the screen, a subassembly, the whole top half of the computer, or the entire computer is entirely up to them, as is whether they replace with new or refurbished parts.
I would make sure I had at least one full backup of everything on my computer before taking it in. Two would be even better. Even if they don't replace the entire computer, something could happen during installation and testing of new parts.
Back when people really cared about the manufacturer of their screen (in the beginning of the Retina models, when one manufacturer had a bad run of screens), instructions for using Terminal commands to determine which you had circulated. I didn't bother to keep a copy of the one I used. A web search for "retina screen manufacturer" (without the quotes) should reveal as top hits several sites with very similar instructions. -
Why does my mid-2010 macbook pro keep restarting? Kernel panic?
Please help,
I work solely on my mid-2010 macbook pro. Lately it has been restarting itself more frequently. I should take it in, but it's hard to be without it for any extended period of time. I was hoping someone could take a look at my crash report and make sense of it?

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution. -
Yosemite System crash mid 2012 Macbook pro retina
Hi everyone ,
I installed Yosemite from 0 .
I have a macbook pro retina Mid 2012problem .
After approx. 6 hours of use the sound is choppy , Blocking stays..you can move the mouse and keyboard sometimes answers but I can not touch anything in OSx and I have no one to turn it off .
Prior to Mavericks had never happened to me and I'm pretty worried.
I have done the Apple Hardware Test and tells me that everything is correct.
and took about 15 days and yesterday I decided to install it from 0 and I just happened.
You know that it may be due ?

2012 MacBook Pro freezing and shutting down randomly
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (15.4" 2.6ghz i7 model) and I'm having some serious issues with the laptop freezing up completely and also randomly restarting. The freezes are hard freezes as well, not simple hangs, they require me to hold the power button down to restart Occasionally when it shuts itself down and attempts to restart it will give me the dreaded "3 beeps" indicating a hardware problem. Strangely, if I hold the power button down so that it shuts itself off entirely and let it sit for a minute it will always restart fine afterwards.
I have swapped out the RAM for new modules and the problem has persisted. It happens at various times as well, sometime in the middle of the night while its asleep, other times while I'm actively using it, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it happens. Likewise they occur regardless of any externals in use as well (I have a 23" external monitor that occasionally use via a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter as well as some USB 3 & 2 external HD's, USB 2.0 hub and a Firewire audio interface. The freezes seem to happen even if I'm using the laptop by itself without any peripherals plugged in.
To make my situation more complicated, I upgraded many of the componants of the laptop upon purchasing it, so I can't really be sure if I have a faulty HD since my only experience with it has been in it's current upgraded state. I have a 256GB SSD as my boot drive and I replaced my optical drive with a data doubler with a 750GB WD HD.
It is not currently under warrenty nor do I have Apple Care so I'd like to do as much legwork as I can to narrow down my issue- I have seen other threads where people have had thier logic boards replaced and the issues persisted- I don't quite have the $$ to spend on that sort of repair unless it truly is the root of my problems.
What can I do to further troubleshoot my setup? The freezes don't happen regularly but they are often enough to be a problem. I am also a musician and use my laptop for live performances so I need to make sure this doesn't happen during a show!
Thanks in advance for any assistanceSounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit. -
Macbook pro Retina suddenly shuts down
I've bought a macbook pro retina 15" about 2 weeks ago and it suddenly shut itself down today. I believe I heard a short circuit sound. The macbook is quite hot, so I assumed that it was overheating. But I still can turn it on and It has been working perfectly until now. Is anyone has the same experience? Should I bring it back to the store asking them to check on it?
The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies. -
Why does my mid-2010 Macbook Pro suffer from huge FPS drops whenever I try to play games?
Macbook info: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, nVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512MB
When I play games on my Macbook Pro, such as League of Legends, Diablo III, World of Warcraft, etc., they operate well with latency of ~80ms usually and fps starting off between 30-60, but after only a couple seconds or minutes my fps drops to 5-15 and the games become unplayable and I must force quit the program. Restarting the computer helps temporarily but then it relapses.
I cleaned out all my downloads, applications, and other deletable files that I could find. I installed and updated Mavericks OS X and the issue persists. Before I installed Mavericks I noticed in Activity Monitor that almost all of my memory was in use while playing a game. After Mavericks the memory is almost all permanently in use, but from what I've read this is what is supposed to happen and instead of looking at memory in use you look at memory pressure, which looks normal.
I was going to upgrade from 4GB RAM (current) to 8GB RAM and see if that helps but idk if that has anything to do with my fps issue or not. Any thoughts?Alright well I'm definitely not running virus scans or doing system backups and then complaining about slow performance.... The only other application running besides whatever game i'm playing is SMC fancontrol to make sure my computer isn't overheating.
In terms of CPU%, games like WoW and LoL take ~50-60% of CPU while active, but activity monitor still reports ~80% idle. For disk activity, i'm not sure whether it uses optical or not, I assume i just uses the hard drive, which is brand new cus it broke down about a month ago and I had to replace it (the fans are brand new as well, so I don't think it could be build up of dust or anything inside because it was opened and cleaned so recently).
I can set all graphics setting to lowest possible and improve my fps to 20, which is still awful, and enabling vertical sync just sends it back down to 15 fps. I don't see why I should have to use lowest graphics settings anyway. It can't be out of date drivers since i have 10.9.1 running. Could the graphics card be the issue? That would suck since I can replace and upgrade RAM but not the graphics card.
I have repaired disk and disk permissions multiple times, virus scans, the whole gambit and nothing seems to help. -
Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina logic board failure
I have a mid-2012 MBP Retina, 256 flash, 16 gb RAM and after 14 months of casual use, the computer shut off one night and smelled like it was burning (it was in a well-ventilated place). I took it in and the logic board had failed. I paid the $310 to get it fixed and it's still having some issues with shut down. After talking to two apple store representatives and discussing it on the phone with an another, their opinion is that these are prone to fail. Has anyone else had similar issues and have they had luck with Apple getting these failure-prone components fixed?
The $310 repair if done by an Authorized service technician should have had its own warranty. Furthermore, if you can claim anything under the Exchange Repair program, you may want to see about this:
http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
In the future always buy AppleCare to protect against manufacturer defects up to three years from computer's purchase.
That failure prone opinion is in part because users may not know how to treat the cables*:
http://www.macmaps.com/frayguide.html
Given that is in the gray line between user neglect and manufacturer defect your mileage may vary on getting it repaired even under warranty.
If you can prove that you know what you are doing, and calmly explain the situation you are more likely to get it repaired when under warranty.
We are just end users here. So we can't tell you what will or won't happen for sure, or guess Apple's policy. -
Best way to transfer from mid 2012 macbook pro retina to new mid 2014 macbook pro
I'm updating to a new 2014 macbook pro. am i better off using a migration assistant from one to another, or restoring from Time Machine (with ethernet to thunderbolt adapter)? Or some other method?
thanks,
ptkmackeg55 wrote:
I have used the Setup Assistant during setup of OS X and I would use a current Time Machine back up to point to during Setup Assistant. I have also manually copied data and apps over from another Mac while on my network. Both take some time and both were equally successful.
So, you have a choice after backing up your current Mac:
Have both Macs on your network, run setup on your new Mac and afterwards manually copy files from the old to the new Mac.
Run setup on your new Mac and use the Setup Assistant to migrate from a Time Machine back up all your user accounts, data and settings.
Question on a similar line except I wanted to partition the drive that came on the new Mid 2014 MBPro (2.8 GHz, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM). Migrating from the old computer b/u seems pretty straight forward, but once the drive that come with the new MBPro is partitioned an install of OS X needs to be done. Here's what I did, I installed the Mavericks I had purchased from the App Store when it came out. Now, from reading here in the Communities, some have indicated the shipped Mavericks version is not the same as the App Store version. Now that the shipped Mavericks is history (after the partitioning) should I try somehow to restore that from the Recovery HD/process? Or ???
This isn't my first rodeo, so I just went full speed ahead and did the partitioning and copied the former MBPro (early 2011) disk created by Carbon Copy Cloner over to the new boot partition. It was suggested that an Erase and Install OS X could be done, but I don't see how that would bring the shipped Mavericks version for this new MBPro, unless the Recovery HD suite of utilities would go and grab that from Apple via Internet; which would be fairly lengthy since it would be via Internet connection.
I'll back up a bit here for a second... I"m not experiencing any problems (kernel panics, etc.) but not sure if the system now is as it should be. Hindsight being what it is I should have made a CCC copy of the shipped volume of Mavericks; if this is an issue.
The system seems to be running fine, and some of my "issues" (for lack of a better term) could be just the way the new Mid 2014 MBPro is handling things - like memory allocation (i.e. using close to the 16 GB most of the time) and kernel_task using 1 GB of memory - more at times). Possibly if I wasn't a regular watcher of Activity Monitor I would just be plodding along, since the system seems to be working fine. Occasionally some apps or their processes take a longer than I feel is what should be normal to do, hence looking at the Activity Monitor to see what is going on.
Sorry for the long ramble. Trying to see if I really have a problem that would necessitate a reinstall of Mavericks via Recovery HD; which could take up some valuable computer work time (which I'm also using posting here <grin>).
Thanks in advance for any ideas, suggesting, etc. Also, to the person who posted to my other question on this another thanks for those suggestions. None of which I've done - yet.
Take care all - and thank you again for all the great minds who make these Community Boards work.

Mid-2012 Macbook Pro Retina GT 650m lagging
My Nvidia Geforce GT 650m has been acting up. When in use, it runs very slowly. The card is even slower than the integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000. As an example, I was playing minecraft and i tried playing using each card. Using the 650m i was receiving approximately 15fps, but the HD 4000 was giving me about 35 fps. I have tried reseting the SMC and PRAM with no success. I have also run hardware diagnostics which did not recognize any errors. Do you guys have any other suggestions? Thanks for any help provided
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
