Why does my new iMac say Migration Assistant on old iMac needs to be upgraded?

New iMac: 2.5 GHz Quad core i5 running Lion 10.7.2
Old iMac: Power PC G4 running Tiger 10.4.11
Migration Assistant app is installed on the G4.
OX software is updated.
Connected via Ethernet cable.
But computers are not seeing each other and the new iMac says "Migration Assistant on the source computer needs to be updated".
Any ideas what is wrong?

You need to use the Migration Assistant on the new computer. You have to boot the G4 into Target Disk Mode - Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. Boot the new computer normally, and you should see a Desktop drive icon for the G4. Open Migration Assistant on the new computer in the Utilities folder.

Why does my cellphone keep saying that "estimating time remaining" when I try to upgrade the system?
Is there anyway to fix this situation?

    Hi Eric_Sun,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
You may want to update your iPhone using iTunes on a computer if your device only shows "estimating time remaining" when you try to update wirelessly:
If you can’t update wirelessly, or if you want to update with iTunes, follow these steps:
If you use your device's Personal Hotspot for your computer's Internet connection, update your device wirelessly or connect your computer to another network.
Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
Plug in your device to your computer.
    In iTunes, select your device.
In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
    Click Download and Update.
If you see an error message while updating your device, you can learn how to resolve iOS update errors in iTunes.
You can find these steps here:
Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If you are still not able to update, I recommend the steps in this article next:

  • Migration Assistant from old iMac to new iMac

I have just purchased a new iMac and on startup the setup assistant allows me to move all my data and setup from my old iMac to my new iMac. However when I start although both iMacs seem to acknowledge each other the transfer does not occur.
I new iMac asks me to install sharing software which I have done successfully.
The new iMac gives me a number to enter onto the old iMac via Migration Assistant. The old iMac finds the new iMac and asks for the number. Upon entry the new iMac moves from 'Searching for computers' to 'Preparing information' but then after about 10 minutes says 'Error connecting to network'.
The new iMac is connected to my router via an ethernet cable, my old iMac is connected to the network via wireless. I don't have a firewire cable to use.
    Any help appreciated.

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

My new phone says "no service".  What do I need to do?

    Hi
Sounds like you have no connection to the network.
Have you called your airtime provider to activate your nano-Sim?
    Hope this helps

  • Migration Assistant used, Old iMac G5 won't Reboot

After successfully (knock on wood) transferring my files, apps, and system settings from my old IMac G5 (Rev A) to my new IMac (early 08), I'm having major problems when trying to start up the old iMac G5.
After I press the Power button on the iMac G5, the power light goes on but there's no startup chime and the screen remains black. Took it to an Apple Store and they thought it was a bad HD after they took out the internal HD out and were able to boot from an external FireWire HD.
I've now tried three different HDs and it still won't reboot. Also, tried using a DiskWarrior CD to get it to startup from a CD, now I've got a CD stuck in the CD/DVD slot. Will be going back to the Apple Store in a couple of days to try again. I did some online research and saw where the same thing had happened to someone in Australia in April 2008, but no so solution had as yet been posted.
    Any thoughts or suggestions??

The "no chime" thing is puzzling. That would indicate a total boot failure, not from a bad HD, but the EFI itself.
When Apple removed the internal HD, was there a boot chime before the system booted into the external drive? If so, it might indicate not a bad HD, but a bad HD driver board or HD connector.

  • Why does my new 3G say "ATT E: at the top and not 3G?

Earlier at work my new 3g said "ATT 3g" and it was zippy fast. But now i noticed here at home, only 5 miles from the office, its saying "ATT E" at the top and its very slow. Does this mean the 3G is down?Or that I don't have enough signal here? I had no idea I would default back to the old slow Edge net? Arghhhhhh!!!

  • Why does the new 61XL say it is for PSC 2510 when it doesn't fit??

I have just purchased a new ink cartridge for my PSC 2510, and was advised to get the 61XL (I usually use the 56) which lists on the side that it is compatible with the 2510. However I have just tried to intall it but there is no way that I can get it to fit as the two tabs sticking up at the front go all the way to the sides of the cartridge as opposed to having a gap on each side on the old one, and this stops it from going all the way in, so I can close the tab over it... Can somebody tell me how this is supposed to fit or have I just wasted $50 for nothing???

    Hi,
Sorry you bought a wrong cartridge, it is not compatible with your printer PSC 2510 , it is compatible with HP Deskjet 2510 All-in-One Printer. Please check the following list:
       http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/oas/product-detail.html?oid=4024150#!tab=compatible_hosts
PSC and Deskjet are two different lines of printers.
    Regards.

  • Why does the new update say its going to take 5 hours?!?!

i started the download and its been going on for hours and its still not done. Under it it says 5 hours!!!! is it supposed to be that long?

Unfortunately, yes. Apple's servers are being hammered by literally millions of people trying to update their software. A long wait is super irritating but it's what usually happens.
Maybe cancel it and if you don't mind waiting a day or two, it'll be much faster work after the rush is over.

I'd recommend staring over, Pondini has created an excellent guide on how to use Setup Assistant. I'd recommend begin reading Pondini Setup Assistant tips where he talks about "Second Chance." Assuming your Time Machine backup is sound the restore  should be very smooth.

  • Why does our new iMac down load speed so slow (1.99) being right next to router. Our hp laptop 30 ft away ran at 13.50.

Why does our new imac download speed so slow (1.99) being right next to the router? Our HP laptop 30 ft  away is running at (13.50), and our old HP desk top connected to highspeed is at (33.10).

You are surprised that Mac OS X 10.7 is running on hardware that Apple officially supports and says it will run on?  I find your logic unbelievably falwed.
Not a single problem I've mentioned would be caused by "slow" CPU or "little" RAM.  How does iPhoto not bringing up the file dialog box have anything even remotely to do with the speed of the CPU or the quantity of RAM?  If what you say is true, then yes, performance would be bad, but it wouldn't be selectively bad.  I stated that apps such as Reason 5 run perfectly fine, even really well.  I can load 30-50 racks and synths and not even reach 50% of CPU utilization, Reason never freezes, etc.  DVD playback never freezes as well!!  Your logic is horrendously flawed, it seems you don't know much about computer architecture   Thus, unfortunately, your reply was of absolutely no help, sorry.
p.s. the external disk spin up problem freezing up the entire graphical interface also has nothing to do with either my CPU/RAM or the OS version I'm running.  It is a known crippleware factor of Mac OS X that at least a thousand people are complaining about online and Apple has done nothing about!

Don't migrate wirelessly unless you have a very fast wireless connection. Anything other than 5 GHz 802.11n is likely to take an unacceptable amount of time.

  • Why does my new iMac keep freezing for no apparent reason?

Why does my new iMac keep freezing? This usually happens when it is not being used and is particularly frustrating when I do need to use it and ahve to switch off and then on again and wait for it to reboot.
I am not computer literate so keep any answers as simple and idiot friendly as possible. I treat it like a car. If I put in the key and turn the ignition on and the enginesprings into life I am content. If not.............. well!

In order to provide any help we need to understand a little bit more about the problem you are experiencing.
You indicated the issue occurs when the sytem is not being used. Does this mean that you stop working on the system and the system 'goes to sleep' where the screen goes black, but when you need to wake it back up by pressing keys on the keyboard or clicking the mouse the system doesn't wake back up? To test for this issue open the System Preferences and click on the Energy Saver preferences. See the 'Computer Sleep' slider to the far right 'Never' setting. You can set the 'Display sleep' setting to any number you prefer. With these settings see if the issue still occurs and let us know the results. If it resolves the issue then give Apple a call and let them know you are unable to wake the system when it goes to sleep. You shouldn't be having that issue.

  • I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but it doesn't show on Finder. How can I locate my data?

I transferred about 400 gigs of data from my MacBook Pro to my new iMac using Migration Assistant, but can't find any of my data on Finder. I'm thinking that the data got transferred but not cataloged. Finder shows about 400 gigs of my hard drive being used, but the files it shows don't come anywhere close to 400 gigs. How can I find out what is really on the hard drive and how can I access my MacBook files I transferred?

I suggest that you start over, boot into Internet recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, erase and reformat the HD with one partition and GUID option, quit Disk Utility, restore the OS, and on first boot, use the Setup Assistant to migrate from the MacBook, following the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. If that doesn't solve your problem, contact Apple's Support. If they recommend the same steps, I'd opt to return the machine and get another (you can do that the first 14 days you own it, no questions asked).
