WHY DOES MY SCREEN HAVE LINES RUNNING THROUGH IT?

I just downloaded ios7 on to my new iphone5 now i have a faint screen with purple lines then white background with black lines

In general turning external monitor off and then on again seems to solve it until next time. Sometimes I've had to do this twice. Once I had to unplug hdmi cable.

    What do you mean by lines running through it?  There have been users with vertical lines, sometimes blue, or yellow, or pink, or combinations.  Those have all turned out to be a bad graphics unit chip that the Apple store techs were able to remove and replace without replacing the entire logic board.
    Take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs test and advise on how to resolve this.

However it is useless b/c there are weird lines running through all the photos making it impossible to view the photos. I thought this would be a great way to show people baby pictures but is not working out so far.

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    In pressing all they keys to try & unfreeze it I must have swithched it from black on white to whilte on black!

    whoops I just solved it! There is a white on black screen preference  but its not under Displays its under Universal Acess. V/relieved

    Try the standard fixes to rule out a software proble:
    - Reset. Nothing will be lost

    You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

    Yes it is done through iTunes. The iPhone will never show up in Finder as a device.     It sounds like your iPad has mulitcolored lines all over it. I would recommend a few things here to help isolate the issue to software or hardware. Try restarting the phone with this article:

    If the issue persists, I would next try reseting the device with the same article:
    To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
    If the issue is not resolved, I would next backup your device to iTunes, and restore it as a new device to see if the lines are still there. If not then restore your backup and verify they are still gone.
