Why does my terminal prompt look like this?

Today I noticed that my Terminal prompt now looks like this:
*pranaymishra:~ tbarth$*
Any idea how that happened? There's nothing in the .profile that does this.

The computer name is 'Travis', and always has been.
Hmmm...
Further investigating shows a computer by that name on the network with a different IP address. The DHCP server shows my IP address as associated with my computer name, 'Travis'.
So could this be an OS X network error where it's picking up the computer name from something like WINS or DNS and not updating it if the IP lease changes? And if so, why does it not simply use the given name specified by the user instead?
As far as the network is concerned, my computer name is 'Travis', as it should be.

EDIT: BTW, 'Use dynamic global host name' is not enabled.

Why does my Finder screen look like this?

When I open Finder by double-clicking on the "Macintosh HD" icon or by clicking the Finder icon on the Dock, it comes up with the left pane being much larger than it needs to be. I don't recall it doing this when I first got the computer, so I'm thinking that I've done something to mess it up. Here's a screenshot so you know what I'm talking about:

So every time I use Finder, I have to drag that middle bar over to the left some so that I can actually see more files & folders on the right side. Help!

I also used this method. Sometimes though I add one step - I open a new finder window, click one of the icons in the window (once) and then close the window with an apple-w or the red button. Usually does the trick.

Why does Bridge Metadata Panel look like this...?

I just updated to Photoshop CS6 from CS5.1 and trying to iron out a few issues. One is this...
In Bridge CS 6 my Metadata Panel items are truncated for some reason. There is plenty of room in the panel width, so...? I have even pulled the width out further than shown below. There are no problems with the other panels.

You've made the headings column too narrow.
Hover your cursor over the space between the 'e' in Fil...e and _IGP1220.DNG. It will change to a resizing indicator, indicating there's a hidden division there. Drag it to the right to make enough room for the headings.
Here's what I see, by the way, when I reduce the UI color to the blackest I can get it in Bridge CS6...

Why does my Applications folder look like this?

Recently upgraded from 10.4 to 10.6 on my MacBook (2 GHz Intel core duo) using the box set and the applications folder in the dock isn't showing properly.
Tried various restarts and repairing permissions. Any ideas?

have you tried removing the current folder (just an alias) from the dock, then re-adding it by dragging the applications folder back into the dock ?

Why does my Terminal prompt change to " "?

I am baffled by a behaviour of the Terminal app, when running a command which I have repeatedly and successfully used before.
On a new Mac, I set up a group (within System Preferences > Users and Groups) containing two users who are to have complete access to any files placed within /Users/Shared/Documents/, called docShare.
I then went into Terminal, and then tried running the following command at a normal-looking prompt:
myMac:~ myName$ sudo chmod -R +a “group:docShare allow delete,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,list,search,add_file,add_sub directory,delete_child,read,write,execute,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/Documents/
(I sudo'ed just because various documents in the folders have different owners. I am the owner of the Documents folder itself.)
Previously, when I've done this on our other Macs (and I've done the same thing for shared iTunes Media folders and iPhoto library), it works without a hitch. ls -le shows that the ACLs have been updated, and bingo! unfettered access to contents of the folder for the two users. This time, though, all that happens is that the prompt changes to an unadorned greater-than symbol:

A cursor flashes, but all subsequent keyboard input is ignored (or at least, it's not echoed on the screen). On quitting and relaunching Terminal, the default bash prompt reappears as shown above, but the ACLs haven't been altered.
I can't help feeling I'm missing something simple here, but I really can't find anything relevant on on web searches. Can anyone enlighten me as to why this command fails on this specific folder, please? I'd be most grateful!

TextEdit is a good editor for doing text but a bad editor for doing systems type things, It has a bad tendency to changes things on you even in dumb mode. If you do any editing of system files or scripts (or even command line things like this) I recommend you get TextWrangler a free editor geared towards this type of work.
Anyway glad you got it to work.

Why does new 5s screen look like the old 4?

We just bought and backed up two new 5s replacing iphone 4. Why does one new 5s screen look like the old 4 iphone. One phone shows new version, one is still old. I have downloaded and backed up twice, same thing happens. Used icloud to backup.

Why does my 3d text look like garbage?

I have been trying out the repousse feature in cs5 and my extrusion is pixelated, rough, jagged, or any other word you can use to say garbage.
Here's what I've done:
Typed my text.
Selected: 3d > Repousse > Text Layer...
Left the settings alone and clicked okay.
This is what I get:
As you can see, it looks like something made in Microsoft Paint then resized fifty times.
I've tried my OpenGL settings in Basic, Normal, and Advanced with the same result in each.
My graphic card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX in case it might be the problem.
Besides for that, I don't know what to try or what settings to adjust. Any ideas?

Looks like your Quality is still set to Interactive... try changing the Quality on the layer settings to "Ray Traced Final." Otherwise you will see that pixelated edge.

Why does text come out looking like junk?

I have a scanned copy of my college diploma and an award from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. All the text on these documents come out looking like symbols and individual letters?

Why can't I choose what I want to sync ? There is no screen like is shown in support. The last update of iTunes doesn't give me chooses

Connect your phone to iTunes, then click on the name of your phone on the left side of iTunes under Devices. To the right you will see tabs representing your sync settings (Summary, Info, Apps, etc.). One of the tabs is Music and one is Podcasts. On each, you can check Sync Music and Sync Podcasts and set the specific music an podcasts you want on your phone. When you're ready, click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone and transfer the media you selected on each of these tabs to your phone.

Help!! why do my pages suddenly look like this??

After spending days preparing this document, all of a suddent tonight something crazy happened. Im not sure how it occured. I made a duplicate of the document and when i did i noticed this odd formating The table of contents is suddenly all screwed up and the test now is truncated with ... at the end of each line and i can;t read the rest of the paragraph. I'm hoping i just clicked something that changed the view but i can;t seem to figure it out. Any ideas?

It's been almost 36 hours since i put it on, yet the adhesive grains and haze which were supposed to disappear have not. anyone else go through this? i promise this is not dust or scratches below if that's what it appears to be.

I installed mine 24 hours ago, and mine came out perfect. I followed the instructions to the letter. I did re-install the front 5 times though! (Dust on two installs, alignment on others)
Looks like it could have been due to two possible issues:
1. Not enough soapy water on the sticky side of the shield during install. Was it soaked well, & were you able to slide it around when first applied?
2. Not enough credit card squeegee action.
I think it is number 1 though.

It is asking if you want to delete all the iCloud contacts off your Mac (not in iCloud).
Delete them. If you keep them you will have duplicates when you turn it back on. You will have the copy you kept and another copy when they resync with iCloud
