Why does my wife's late 2009 iMac drop wi-fi so often?
Hi,
My wife's iMac drops the wi-fi on a daily basis, sometimes, several times a day. Frequently it is just a momentary drop or might take several minutes, but it is always disrupting none-the-less. There is a good signal from the Comcast router 50' away. My work HP work laptop shows a good signal (often 48-54mps) and never drops the signal. We do regular software/firmware updates through iTunes, so it should have all the proper drivers working. It is currently a Snow Leopard OS (late 2009) but I'm planning to download Lion soon. Is there a setting I can tweak in the utilities app. I'm not a Mac power user, but will be getting my own MBP soon so hope to get more knowledgable soon. Til then, any help would be greatly appreciated.
That's a good idea, and I hadn't thought about that. Not exactly sure how to update it. Do I plug it into my computer and download firmware updates for that model? Never had to do it before and as I mentioned it works perfectly for my HP laptop from work. Thanks for your reply.

Late 2009 imac super slow virgin media WiFi
Hi All,
I am running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 on a late 2009 iMac 27"
A few onths back I had issues with WiFi dropping off, these issues appeared to have returned.
I did find a driver roll back page that helped me last time round but can no longer find it
In addition to this I have the following problem as well.
I am sitting here in front of my Mac and also have a Win 7 HP laptop.
I am running speedtest.net on them both pinging the same servers for a speedtest and the results are;
Virginmedia 30Mbps connection:
Imac
ping 27ms
Download 14.24Mbps
Upload 2.7Mbps
HP Laptop
Ping 30ms
Download 21.29Mbps
Upload 2.61Mbps
So, in a nutshell my 4 year old £350 laptop is kicking the pants off my £1800 4 year old iMac
Anyone got any ideas as to why this may be?
Both machines are running only safari/chrome respectively, no other internet load is present.
Thanks in advance.
Mark..Mark, have you tried changing the wi fi channel on your router?

I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 3TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.
Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files. -
Which chipset does the late 2009 iMac have?
Hello everyone especially Fortuny and The hatter!
I'm still having trouble with my Windows 7 installation and wondered if anyone knows what the make and model number of the late 2009 iMac chipset was... I.E. The controller that drives the chipset and Sata etc.
None of the chipset installs that come with Boot Camp install anything and it's still listed as a GENERIC device with a Microsoft Driver...
Intel, Nvidia, etc just doesn't install.
All the best,
MikeHi Mike,
the best I could find is that the chipset is an Intel Series 5 chipset which Intel themselves use on their H55/Q57 mainboards.
Using the OSX Install DVD (no. 1) that came with your iMac should install the correct driver for it.
While in Windows you can copy the whole content of the OSX install disc and thus the BootCamp Driver to a new and empty folder to more easily 'rummage' around in the drivers.
Sorry for not having a more precise answer. (My own i7 iMac is OSX-only).

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.
Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point ..... More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest, I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control - This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... They are not that clear but if you are going through this you will recognize the images for sure - There was so many more variations but this should help out - Thanks to everyone that takes the time out to help people on this support site .... I want to send a shout out to The Art Of Sound .... He is the most knowledgeable Apple person I have ever come across and I am an Apple user for 20+ years

How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
Try these in order:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
RAM issues after installation (Late 2009 iMac)
I was trying to upgrade a late 2009 iMac computer from its original RAM of 4GB. I purchased 8GB of memory from Corsair off Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Channel-204-Pin-SO-DIMM-CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7/dp/B0050 5EZYW/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1403201294&sr=8-6&keywords=mac+memory+notebook+8+gb), which, despite saying is "Notebook Memory" in the description, there are numerous reviews stating that it works in late 2009 iMacs and the packaging itself says it will work with iMacs. I've installed memory before on two other Macs, including another late 2009 iMac (from 4GB to 8GB), but have had issues with this most recent installation. Like I said before, the computer originally had 4GB of memory, with 2x2GB cards in their original slots (the two slots closest to the stand). So, I installed the 2x4GB cards in the bottom two slots (slots closest to the display).
Upon rebooting the computer, I get a single loud tone, repeated every 5 seconds, which, according to other support articles, means that there is no RAM installed. I took out the RAM cards and tried various installations, and can't even get the original two cards, by themselves and in their original slots, to work. I'm pretty sure I am installing them correctly - I don't hear a loud click when I slide them into place, but the fit definitely feels snug and can hear them shift into place, plus I get a nice click when I've popped them out with the tabs.
Other things to note - there seems to have been a fair amount of dust when I first removed the plate where the memory is held, but that was easily blown away, but I could have possibly lodged dust further into the slot. But I highly doubt that is the issue. I installed it on a carpeted floor to protect the screen, which looking back could mean there was a slight static charge, but am not sure if this would result in damaging the cards to the point where the computer does not recognize them anymore. I didn't realize this till after the first failed installation, but there was a refrigerator-type calendar magnet (very, very weak) on the front of the computer that I am wondering might also have something to do with the issues.
I could try installing the RAM on the other late 2009 iMac but don't want to risk ruining another computer...
Please let me know if there's any additional information I can supply. I wanted to include any possible sources of issues so I can pinpoint exactly what caused this to occur, or if there's something I am simply not doing correctly. Not sure if it's a permanent solution, but found something that works. Not sure exactly how the locking mechanism for the cards work, but I had an idea that possibly one side was seated poorly, causing the issue to occur. I therefore tried two cards on the left side, found that didn't work, and tried two cards on the right side, and that did work. I tried two cards on the right side, with one card either in the top left corner or top bottom corner, and the top left corner worked, but caused the computer to start beeping again shortly after turning on. Took out that card, restarted the computer, and now it works fine, albeit with less memory than I originally wanted. It did once run into an issue shortly after turning on when it did 3 short beeps, 3 long beeps, and 3 short beeps. I saw an error online with the inverse (3 long, 3 short, 3 long), but couldn't find a definitive answer for what my particular pattern meant (someone said it was a logic board error). Anyway, I left it by itself as I looked for an answer, and in the meantime it restarted again and ended up fixing itself.
Not exactly sure if this will start another series of issues, but that seems to work in the meantime. -
My hard drive is slower than ever - Late 2009 iMac - help requested
I was testing my hard disk via BlackMagic Disk Speed Test across the network (for copying files from my MacBook Pro to my Late 2009 iMac, and I was shocked at the write speeds.
Because of this, I went to the machine and ran local tests, both BlackMagic and xbench. Suddenly I was horrified when I saw the performance for write operations well below the speeds I'd observed in the past. Luckily, I had saved xbench files so I had the ability to compare old disk tests. In the summer of 2013 running 10.7.3, this same hard drive had an uncached write speed of 116 MB/s [4K blocks] and 94 MB/s [256K block]. Now, the drive running under 10.9.5 is performing very inconsistently, with top speeds around 80 MB/s and averages more like 50 MB/s.
I cannot think of any significant changes to tools or background applications installed since that time, so I ran EtreCheck -- the results of which I'm pasting below.
Any guidance as to what I should test would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! --
Chris
Problem description:
Hard disk slowed to less than half the speed from Mac OS X 10.7.3, as I am now on 10.9.5 and the speed appears to be roughly 40M/s uncached write down from 119M/s previously. I am using the same drive, memory and most of the same applications.
The only large difference is the OS.

Mar 7, 2015, 11:20:50 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/AddressBookSourceSync_2015-03- 07-232050_[redacted].crashHi Eric -
I did a horrible job of explaining *when* the slow performance became noticeable. These changes did not happen when I installed Mavericks, I just don't have benchmarks *saved* to give the support community exact numbers after Mavericks was installed. The performance at that time was roughly the same, although you might recall that the old app xbench no longer worked to give a comparison because one or more of the sections of testing wouldn't work (memory, if I recall correctly, although I will run it when I am back at that machine and post here).
In any case, the only significant change since the slow down is the OS, but the decline in performance was noticed in the fall. It wasn't until I tried this network copying task the other day that I decided to run BlackMagic's test. This is when I realized I should go check the performance on the local machine. Having already run through many of the generic recommendations, I thought perhaps someone here who has a much deeper understanding of the storage abstraction layer would have guidance on specific preference files that might be corrupted since I can't find any tool to check them. I've noticed that many of the people seeking guidance are not very technical and the advice is similarly geared. I'm sure I could spend a little time this week finding comparable tools in Mac OS X to those I'd have used in the past on Windows (Sysinternals) to do real time debugging and process analysis.
So far I have found that there were a few processes running high, like the dashboard client, so I moved (deleted) the preference file and rebooted. This resulted in the gain to that 60 MB/sec write performance (up from the low of 40 MB/sec), but there must be other areas yet unexplored.
At this point I'm considering a fresh install, but I'd been told in previous exchanges when I first started developing on Macs (2008) that fresh installs were rarely the best solution on Macs.
Can you give me guidance on that? You probably know that in the Windows world it is often (depending on how you define often) necessary to format and reinstall the OS. As a long time systems architect developing everything from device drivers to enterprise solutions, I see that as a result of the attempts to maintain legacy support for so long and the convoluted resulting APIs and failure to make real fixes for fear of causing problems with older hardware and software. Would you suggest erasing and reinstalling?
@BobHarris - I know that's a problem and it's why I monitor the drive more than I do drives in other systems. My drive didn't qualify for replacement, but I think Apple doesn't always do a good job with the recalls. I was very fortunate that my old white MacBook qualified for quite a few replacement parts so it's a great browsing-the-web computer now, but at its age, it isn't capable of running most of the apps I need. I have considered selling the 27" iMac but when I last had it in for warranty repair, the DisplayPort was misaligned to the case, so I'm going to have to pay labor just to get it popped open to fix that (since the service center says they didn't cause the DP problem - although they must have!)... In any case, if I have to spend that money, I might as well use the drive doubler kit since I never use the optical drive in that box anyway. Mostly I love having it because of the gorgeous big screen. That being said, costs of repairs are silly when I can just buy another used MBP circa 2012 and get twice the processing power then use a CalDigit dock like the one I use with my existing MBP to use an inexpensive HD TV for the monitor.
Thanks for the replies folks - the input is awesome!

Late 2009 iMac Windows installer won't run
So I will explain with more detail. My iMac is the late 2009 21.5 inch iMac with a..

500GB HDD
So I followed the bootcamp guide which was made by apple. I opened up the bootcamp assistant and downloaded all of the software needed, and started partitioning the disk. I made about 40GB of space for my Windows side. After the partition completed, my mac restarted and started to read the DVD. However, I only get a black screen, and I can't get the Windows 7 installer to run. I thought I have some problems with my install disk so I used virtual box to see if the dvd works. When I used it on virtual box, the installer started and everything went fine. But when I use this for bootcamp, it did not work. I tried resetting everything, using a different installation disk, redo the partitioning, or boot up the disk by pressing the option key at the startup and selecting the disc. But none of them worked. I don't know why this is not working, since windows installed without any problems on my macbook pro retina. If someone was in the same situation or knows a solution for this, please help me. Again it is the Late 2009 iMac 21.5 inch model. So I will explain with more detail. I need to restart my mac about 2 or 3 times a day, because it freezes or 'just' the whole screen is like a mash. I've found a photo, and my situatation is similar to this:
Not exactly the same cause the dock and the opened windows can be seen. Just the wallpaper, images, some web pages have this beatiful design. I though the newest update would help, but it's just the same. Maybe one application crashes, just I don't know what to do. ThanksI am having precisely the same issue and have tried everything above and all noted about this problem much discussed elsewhere.
I have also resorted to the restting the System Management Controller http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
My Late 2009 iMac is the custom Intel i7 build with 8 GB Apple installed RAM and a recently replaced SEAGATE hard drive (under the APPLE extended fix arrangement). The OS was a clean install and has been upgraded to 10.8.3.
On appearance of the black screen the operating system appears to be running and responds to sleep and wake using the power button and occasionally shows the screen momentarily and sometimes briefly. Like others. the problem occurs on occassions and on those occassions persists. I also have another system purchased to hopefully get around this problem. I use this new system on the on the same supply ring main, a recent Mac Mini + screen. This sometimes has similar problems but much less often and the problems occur when the iMac has persistent problems. This leads me to think that there is a software and power mains supply problem.
I have also tried connecting the Mac mini too the mini-display-port of the iMac using the relevant cable and using the F2 toggle,. I can see the Mac mini screen even when the iMac has problems.
I live in London. our electricty supply comes from one company responsible for the national grid and pipe to customer. The billing and customer relationship is handled by a number of "suppliers". My supplier (EDF who took over London Electricity) recently included in their updates and materials, the procedure for notification of supply quality issues. This suprised me since I have not had issues of this nature to the extent of being naive on the matter. I have been told by others in the locality of similar MAC computer related problems. I have tried with and without surge supressor.
Whatever the problem, it is a nuisance to have an expensive and otherwise good iMac behave as it does. Any further input will be much appreciated. -
Late 2009 iMac is failing. No obvious reason - help!
My late 2009 iMac has been getting slower and slower in last few months and is now practically dead. I've checked everything (Ram, CPU, rogue processes) and can see nothing obvious. I have 1.8GB free RAM, CPU never looks busy in Activity monitor. I upgraded to Mavericks on hope it would help but nadda.
I keep getting the waiting ball appear when I try to do things. Sometimes I get an hour of undisturbed bliss, then relentless waiting with every click. When I restart the machine it is always at its worse, till about 2-3 hours later when the iMac seems to have settled and I can actually do a few things without prolonged waiting.
I tried to reinstall Mavericks to see if that worked but the reinstall failed at the last minute, leaving me back where I started.
Full system details of my machine are:

Late 2009 iMac running sporadically slow
Hi I was wondering if anyone could help
I have a late 2009 iMac with 4gb of Ram which is running intermittently slow and hanging. It has periods when it works fine and then others where the icons bounce for ages before opening and the little spinning circles arrive when even doing the most basic of activities. I don't have hundreds of things open at once.
Its hardwired to the network so even if streaming iCloud music it shouldn't really cause the system to hang.
Its upgraded to Yosemite, but these issues were pre-exisiting and its been slow for a while.
Use dropbox and appreciate big syncs will have an issue, but at the moment that is all up to date.
Below is a system report and:

Is anyone using SMC fan control on their late 2009 iMacs?
I am very concerned about the heat from my iMac.
I have a late 2009 27 inch model.
I noticed a lot of posts of GPU and HD failures.
I bought this iMac used through a certified Apple reseller and I can't afford any problems with this for awhile.
Computer components do not Ike heat.
And despite everything I have been reading in this forum aluminum can retain heat. Not simply vent all of it away from the back casing.
Excessive heat is what shortens the life span of any components In a computer.
Heat in a computer is the enemy!
I do not care what I am getting for temp readings from my iMac.
It's very, very warm and I don't like it and feel it will cause issues in the near future.
I just bought this iMac three months ago and, at least for awhile due to personal health issues, I can't afford to repair a potential failure that might occur in the near future.
I posted a similar thread not long ago but only got one response I was not happy or confident with.
I want to know if anyone is running SMC Fan Controls on late 2009 iMac models and if it has helped and whether anyone had issues with it.
I want my iMac to run cooler than it does now.
I am in a living situation where I have limited means to cool the place I live. The room I am using has no air conditioning only a large ceiling fan and I am running a floor fan. I have a small fan blowing air behind the iMac's case to help with cooling it, also.
Room temps can get into the high 80's.
Also, if you are running SMC Fan Control on a 2009 iMac, could you give an idea what RPM setting you are using for the various fans.
I am a freelance graphic designer, Illustrator, and audio/video guy. Plus I have doing 3D CGI model work for the last few years. I run Photoshop. Final Cut and Blender quite often.
Any real help with this issue would be greatly appreciated!
ThanX.Even if I had one, I wouldn't run SMC Fan Control. Apple has not released the limits of temperature for any of its Mac model interiors. As such any temperature management is purely guesswork. If you are having serious trouble maintaining an enivoronment suitable for computers, you probably should consider at minimum a window air conditioner unit. http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html are very particular about the outside environment. If that is not able to be maintained, you seriously need to consider a different working environment.

Late 2009 imac as second display for new (late 2012) imac. How to?
I have a late 2009 imac 27 that I would like to use as a second display for my late 2012 imac 27. Has anybody connected them successfully? I am getting very mixed information on the topic.
Thank you. Here's where my confusion comes in
"iMac (Mid 2011) and later: target Display Mode does not work with Mini DisplayPort cable"
Symptoms
When you attempt to connect an iMac (21.5-inch or 27-inch, Mid 2011) and later to another computer with a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, the screen of the target iMac will not become an external display when you press Command-F2 to activate Target Display Mode.
Resolution
iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) computers do not support Target Display Mode via Mini DisplayPort cables. -
Upgrading HD on my late 2009 iMac 27.
Can I upgrade the HD in my late 2009 iMac 27 to one of the WD Caviar Green 3tb drives? I am running Lion and all of the latest updates are complete. My iMac is out of warranty and I plan on doing this upgrade myself using the iFixit guide.
Thanks for any and all help.yes, the Scorpio Black ones are excellent. I have one in an external enclosure. Internal hard drives are still expensive I have noticed. I paid about $80 less for the 750 gb, 7200 rpm one on Newegg.com for the same one they are selling now.
