Why does Office starts faster on my MBA than on my 2,8ghz iMac?

I am surprised that Office, and particularly Word and Excel, launch blazingly fast and rarely crash on my new Macbook Air (SSD model) than on my 2.8 ghz iMac with 4 gigs of RAM, where launch times are slow and the programs often crash. I know SSD drives provide faster access, but the difference is astonishing.
I was wondering if anyone could explain this, and whether there is something can be done to resolve the issue of Office's basic unusability as it is.

Check the Activity Monitor for any clues regarding this behavior.
MS Office has never really played well with Leopard as you will see from searching these forums.
Your statement that Office "rarely crashes" indicates a problem. A well-behaved app should never crash. One crash would start me looking for a problem.
I use NeoOffice and OpenOffice and neither has ever crashed.
You might create a new "clean" user on the slower computer and see if that makes a difference.
BTW, Please say hello to James, next time you see him.

Because it has a RISC processor. Just brag about all the MHz or even GHz while you are waiting like other Intel users. Using my trusty G4 rather than MBP becase its simply faster.

why does google start up but when i try to access a web page it shuts off

Not entirely sure what you mean, but if you are saying that the Safari screen is frozen/inactive then try clearing its cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data (Clear Cache on iOS 4) and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions??

Why does siri starts in the locked screen even if i don't allow it in the restrictions? if a thief got my phone he can hold 3 sec the home button and with siri he can call and do what every he wants..

    Thanks, you're my hero! :-)
The problem wasn't about the Restricitions because they are really irrelevant. The Problem was that i didn't had this Option to turn Siri off in the Touch ID & Passcode-Menu because i had to activate Siri first.
Here ist the way to deactivate Siri in the locked Screen:
[1] Settings > General > Siri > turn Siri on
[2] Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > ALLOW ACCESS WHEN LOCKED > turn Siri off

  • Why does my exported swf show more content than actually on frame?

Why does my exported .swf show more content than actually on frame?
My problem is relatively simple, though, I had some trouble finding a solution to it:
When I play my exported animation using flash player in Google Chrome, if the window is bigger than the resolution flash document/frame, it shows content not meant to show up on the frame -- like parts of a huge background that aren't supposed to show up yet.
In other words, how do I constraint the .swf to the white background/document resolution?

Anyone? I'd appreciate it if someone replied soon -- I am done with my project once this issue is resolved, and I am excited to publish it.
Please respond if you have any useful knowledge on the matter!

  • [Forum FAQ] Why does Office 2013 cost more network flow when the application starts by default?

Recently, we’ve heard that our customers encounter high network traffic since they large-scalely deploy Office 365/2013 within the domain/site. Does this behavior relate to the new Office? Or does Office 365/2013 cost more network resources in this case?
To troubleshoot this, we consider to analyze what happened during the process by Network Monitor tool.
Start a new capture first and launch Office Word 2013, get the following things as the screenshots:
    According to the information above,
in addition to the network authentication flow, we could notice that the Word.exe would download a lot of PNG files from the link “/en-us/templates”. What about those PNG files?
Let us try to directly visit them via IE:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/TM103463086.png?ts=AOLhIeGIzwg
Beyond question, they are the thumbnails of the Office template which are downloaded while the Office application starts by default.

    In
    some certain circumstances,
we might disable it by Office option or Group policy.
Disable Start Screen by Office 2103 UI:
Open Office 2013 application, go to File in Ribbon > Options tab > General page > under the section of Start Screen options, uncheck the options "Show the
Start screen when this application starts"
Disable Start Screen by Registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\General
    DisableBootToOfficeStart (DWORD): set the value
    to 1
Disable Start Screen by Group Policy:
    Disable Start Screen by OCT:

  • Why does Office 2011 autorecovery work so crappy? Who is responsible?  Apple or Mircosoft?

    Hi all,
May be this is old question, but my Mac just have crushed and, as always, autorecovery has not saved any files.
There are no hidden files in Library directory as well.
I agree that my Windows notebook crushes much more often than Mac, but at Windows all files are always available after autorcovery.
So, I have very theoretical question -
Why does autorecovery work different at Mac and PC and why Mac Office does not have normal autorecovery instead of completely useless function?
Does this situation change in Yosimitee and will it change in the next Office?
    Vlad

That is a very good question. I've just learned to never trust it and save my work periodically as I go. Then I only lose what I haven't saved between that last save and a crash. Though I also can't remember the last time any Office app crashed on me.
There is a fairly recent topic around here that describes how to find the recovery file. Word, for whatever reason, won't open the file or even let you know it's there, but you can manually get it. I'll have to see if I can dig that topic up.
Edit: Ah! That didn't take long. Read through this topic.

  • Why does a DVI or VGA look better than HDMI for 2nd Monitor

Why does a DVI or VGA connection for a program monitor look better than HDMI. I've tested this on several systems with CS5x and CS6. The full screen output from premiere definitely looks worse with HDMI.
I can often see visual differences with the Windows GUI as well, over sharpening of text and lines, harsh rendering of gradients. It looks like a VGA signal displayed on a television.
I've looked at the NVidia stetting and it appears to be set to 1920x1080 at 60hz either way, DVI or HDMI. On one Acer 20 inch monitor the was VGA, HDMI, Composite, Component, and Digital Tuner, but no DVI. The program monitor has always looked blah from the HDMI. So I recently switched the connection to a DVI to VGA adaptor, and now the video looks so much better.
    Any thoughts or explanations?

Just because the monitors accept a 1080P signal doesn't mean their native resolution is 1920x1080. At 20 inch they very likely can scale that signal down to the native resolution of the panel which may be 1600 x 900 or another resolution that is 16 x 9 resolution. That scaling can be done by the GPU or firmware on the Monitor depending on the video driver options and the firmware options. That scaling is also the most common cause to text and icon blurriness you are talking about. As an example there are Pro monitors that accept a 4K signal but scale it down to 2.5K or 2K on the actual panel. You might try going into your video card settings such as Nvidia control panel and look for the scaling options. Select GPU scaling and see if the preview is better. If that doesn't work select no scaling and see if it's better if the monitor firmware handles the scaling.

  • Why does Compressor's HDV output look worse than iDVD's output of same?

Okay, here's the thing... for weekly updates I've been sending the client outputs via iDVD. And they've honestly looked great. The HDV footage fills the screen and doesn't show any noticeable compression funkiness. But for the screening of the completed first cut I wanted to deliver what I thought would be an even higher quality look (esp since I intended to deliver the completed project mpeg and AC3), so I exported the HDV cut out of FCP via QT and converted it with Compressor's DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes to turn the HDV into SD 720x480 16:9 letterboxed. I then burned it with DVDSP, complete with nice looking menus, etc. And I was shocked viewing the output. The two clips I'd reversed in FCP stuttered, and even a clip with nothing on it was strobing. Plus, close ups showed noticeable compression on the faces. So what gives? Why does it look so much better when I just slammed it out on iDVD? What don't I "get?" I've scoured the books I have and nothing seems to give me a clue.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

Lightroom uses its own raw converter and its own camera profiles to convert the raw data into an image.  This will never be the same as the camera-manufacturer’s raw image decoding either in camera or using camera-manufacturer-supplied software or any other third-party software.
Here is a general explanation from a few years ago, that is mostly valid, with the one exception that there are no camera-matching profiles for your brand of camera:
    http://www.lightroomforums.net/showthread.php?1285-Why-did-Lightroom-ruin-my-photo
The IDC is apparently using camera settings and is clearly sharpening the image and quashing some of the lens-flare, oversharpening in my opinion.
You can do these sorts of things in LR, too, but you have to tell it to do things, it won’t do this by default.
The 2010 and 2012 are related to Process Version not Profile, and one difference between the two PVs is how the toning responds to near clipping conditions.  Your reds are very saturated and near if not actually clipping so it is not surprising that the two raw conversions are not the same.
Can you provide a link to the raw file, using DropBox.com or similar large-file-hosting-service and maybe someone will give some tips on how to make the LR processing closer to what you’re seeing with the camera-manufacturer version.?

  • Why does Firefox Start page always says I need to update, but it is already updated.

Firefox Start Page always has this message: " You're not on the latest version of Firefox. Upgrade today to get the best of the Web!"
I open Help/About Firefox, and it tells me "Firefox is up to date." Version 6.0.2 Why do I keep getting a message to update it?
    Thank you.

Just what is happening? When you restore via iTunes, the computer reinstalls the IOS on the iPod. To do that the computer first contacts Apple to find what the latest firmware for your device and and then downloads it if a copy does not already exist on the computer.

  • Why does Web Start App ignore Proxy bypass/exception list in Proxy settings

    Hi All,
I've been pulling my hair out on this one for a while now and finally decided to see if someone can help me out.
In my office I have a intranet of numerous devices and pcs connected. There is also a proxy server on the network to allow connection through the the internet. I have my proxy settings setup to bypass the proxy for any addresses on my intranet. This is set in the normal way by adding ( http://192.168.1. to proxy settings exception list in IE. This proxy bypass list works fine for all other situation except the following:
On my Intranet I have an embedded web server device I have been developing that has a java application deployed using web start. This application is a monitoring tool that allows the user to check the various settings and status of the embedded device. The problem is that when the app is launched for some reason web start tries to get the require jar file from the proxy instead of directly from the device, even when the IP address of the device it is trying to get it from is in the bypass list?? I don't think Web start is checking the exception/bypass list in the proxy settings to see if it should be using the proxy or not?? I can see this by using wireshark and inspecting the GET HTTP requests sent from my pc to the proxy server instead of directly to the ip address of the embedded device.
If I change my proxy settings to use a direct connection/no proxy (untick the "use proxy server for your lan" box in IE settings) then everything works fine. However this is not a workable option for my customers as they don't want to have to continually change these settings when connecting to this device and then to the internet (which is the whole reason of having the exception / bypass list).
I've tried many things including using the proxy settings in the Java console instead of getting them from the browser but the same thing occurs.
Any help would much appreciated, as I not sure if it is something I am doing wrong, or a possible bug, or just the way it is meant to work??
    I'm using the following...
    Java version: 1.6 1.6.0_17
Operating system: ( I've tried XP and Vista)

I have the same problem, please anyone can help?
