Why does one Hebrew character drop out in print?

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the Acrobat forum -- let me know if it should be moved.
I sent a job to press and had the problem that in print, one character of one Hebrew font did not print and was substituted with a box. I am using Windows 7 Professional and I prepared the file in ID CC 9.2 and exported the PDF using PDF/X-1a:2001 settings. The PDF looked fine on my end with all characters correct.
I sent the file to my printer and the final printed result had that one character (same character always) substituted with the box. My printer says he uses Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows 7 Ultimate machine, with Quite Imposition Pro for imposition and page shirts, ordering, etc. He printed the file on several devices: Xerox 7655, Xerox 242 and Xerox 5000, all with the same results.
After we saw the problem in print, he tried it again with the files originating on a Windows 7 Professional machine and there was no problem. He printed a similar file for me last year using the same fonts when he was using Windows XP and there was no problem.
Additionally, I have had numerous files using this font printed by other printers without a problem.
How do we troubleshoot this? What should we look for? And how can we prevent it in the future?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Some comments and questions on this thread …
(1)     Windows 7 Professional versus Windows 7 Ultimate is irrelevant for this discussion. As pointed out, the only difference is some multimedia shovelware bundled with the OS and not OS functionality itself!
(2)     It is only necessary to subset embed a font in the PDF file created by export from InDesign. It is a total bubbameissa that either a fully embedded font or a subset is somehow either more reliable or otherwise better than the other. Furthermore, contrary to other urban legends, fully embedding a font does not provide the capability of editing the PDF file's text in Acrobat without having the font otherwise installed on your system. What is true is that fully embedding the font (i.e. forcing the embedding all glyph definitions from a font) yields much larger and potentially bloated PDF files.
(3)     The Use Local Fonts feature is totally irrelevant for PDF files for which the fonts are embedded. With the Use Local Font option enabled (the default), Acrobat attempts to use equivalently-named fonts on the user system for text for which the font is not embedded. The fonts on a user's system never override the fonts embedded in a PDF file. There are no exceptions to this either for display or printing a PDF file from either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. I obviously cannot vouch for third party PDF viewers.
(4)     We are not currently aware of any glitches in InDesign PDF Export or Acrobat/Reader that would yield the described symptoms.
(5)     Quite Imposing is a plug-in to Acrobat that does imposition of logical pages of a PDF file for creating books, booklets, n-up configurations, etc. I personally use it, know the program's developer, and know of no glitches with that software when used with otherwise kosher PDF files.
(6)     When printing to PostScript printers, Acrobat/Reader generates its own PostScript and handles its own embedding of fonts for the output stream. Acrobat/Reader never uses printer-resident fonts. Nor does it ever substitute any user-installed fonts for fonts that are embedded in the PDF file.
(7)     The fact that the file prints correctly sometimes and sometimes not at your printer and that other printers seem to have no issue with the files and the fonts in question points directly to some system issues with your printer. What those are cannot be readily discerned without knowing more about the printer's complete workflow. We know about use of Quite Imposing, but does the printer do stupid things such as opening the editing the file in Adobe Illustrator “just to check things out?” That's a good way to terribly mess up a PDF file! Or perhaps there are other third party workflow applications that your printer routinely ruins files with? I am not trying to be obnoxious, but on these forums you wouldn't believe what we have seen trying to pass themselves off as professional printers.
I would be glad to dissect the PDF file here at Adobe and ascertain its actual quality. Send me a private message via the forum with a pointer to where I can download the file from or otherwise let me know and I'll give you my e-mail address so that you can send it via e-mail.

  • Why does my ipad randomly drop out of wi-fi?

My new ipad 4 (the retina one) keeps dropping out of my home wi-fi network. Randomly, when playing music or just browsing it drops out and I have to go onto settings to tap on the network.
    Thanks in advance. :)

    Try #5.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Why does the sound keep dropping out?

Can someone explain to me in very simple terms how to fix my Airport Express so that it doesn't keep dropping the sound when I'm playing iTunes. About every minute to a minute and a half, the sound drops out for a second or two. It is very annoying. I have checked the communities, but none of the recommended fixes are making any sense to me. One suggested that it was the internet speed, so I actually upgraded my internet yesterday to a faster speed, but I am still running into this issue.
I am using a PC. I am playing iTunes wirelessly. The distance between my router, my computer, and the Airport Express shouldn't be an issue; they are relatively close together. I have had no other issues with my wireless. My Blu-ray player is able to access the internet wirelessly and stream movies with no problem, so I don't understand why I am having such an issue with streaming music.
I love the concept of the Airport Express, but I am ready to take it back to the store for a refund.

Thanks for your reply. Both my AEX and my router are set to the same channel (6). (From what I understand, they need to be set to the same channel for it to run through WiFi, right?) When I run a scan, nothing else in the area is set to that channel, so I don't think there should be any interference.
I went through the rest of the settings, and they all seem to be correct. I'm not sure how to check if it is set as a client only, but it is set for airplay and I didn't set it up to extend the network. I verified that it is set to "join a wireless network," not "extend a wireless network."
The signal I am getting from my router is at 100%, so I thought I'd give it another try after verifying everything. It still drops out. I timed the drop-outs this time, and it is actually happening literally every minute, almost to the second.
I think I might be heading back to the store for a refund later today unless I get some other suggestions on what will fix this issue. If the drop-outs happened every 20 minutes, even every 10 minutes, I could put up with it, but every minute is unacceptable.

  • Why Does Home Sharing keep dropping out?

    Hi,
I recently got an apple TV and I'm very happy with it. However one irritating thing is that the Home Sharing in itunes keeps dropping out. So I sit down comfortably in my armchair, ready to watch one of my home movies that I have in itunes movies on the computer, and go to select it and 'nothing'. I have to drag myself upstairs, open itunes, disconnect home sharing and then reconnect home sharing and then everything is fine.
It's not a huge deal but rather irritating. Can anyone tell me how I can prevent this disonnect of home sgaring from happening?
    Thanks,
    Steve.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first.

  • Why does my wifi keep dropping out

The Wifi on my new Mac mini works for a short time and then drops out.  We have no trouble with either of our Macbooks and had no trouble with the iMac G5 that we have replaced with the Mini.  The Wifi router is in the same place as previously.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

  • Why does one set of clients out perform another?

    Greetings all -
When I execute sqlplus using this query "select * from SYS.COL$ where rownum<=50000;" from our linux client it, takes 12 seconds. When I execute it from any of several of our solaris clients it takes close to a minute. So the linux client will run the above SQL faster than all the solaris clients by a multiple of 4 or 5 times. The linux (el x86-64) data servers and the sun clients are all in the same room. Some of the solaris clients are virtual (zones) on a SUN t5220 box. Other solaris clients are physical boxes (sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-V245).
The 2 linux dataservers are HP ProLiant DL380s. When one of these is used as a client and runs the SQL against the same database that the solaris clients are targeting it out performs the solaris clients significantly.
So allow me to restate - when I run the query from dataserver_2 against the target database on dataserver_1, it takes 12 seconds. When I execute the query from any solaris client against the target database on dataserver_1, it takes over 50 seconds.
We've also tested with a "back door" in place, putting the solaris client on the same network as the dataservers. This didn't make any difference. I've also tested by making changes to the kernal settings on the solaris client, bumping up the max-shm-memory parm from the default up to 7g and this also didn't help. The linux client which performs well is also a dataguard standby server. Why am I seeing such a difference in elapsed times to run this query - depending on which client I run it from? All the solaris clients query elapsed times are consistently around 55 seconds. When it runs from another linux client in a four miles away, it takes 38 seconds. What can I do to improve the performance for these solaris clients?
A side note: running an "ssh scp" against a 1-gb file also takes inordinately long when the source or target is one of our solaris clients. Our UNIX support tells us this just indicates scp doesn't work so great on these clients.

The "good" trace output file has 150,099 lines and "bad" trace output file has 150,092 lines. No extra ACKs in the bad - just much longer "SQL*Net message from client" elapsed times.
I've just tested with arraysize set to 50000. No gain.
I also set SDU to 32768 in both the client tnsnames file and the listener/sid_list. No gain.
Thanks all for your helpful feedback.

  • Why do I keep getting a "Safari can't find the server" message? Why does the connection keep dropping out?

When I open Safari and browse, I often get this message: "Safari can't find the server". I will then wait for at least 5 minutes, try the site again, and it will open, but then it just keeps happening on just about all websites now. These are very stable sites. I have had two technicians from my ISP try and fix the problem but with no success. I went to the Apple store, they told me to reset Safari - which I did - but that didn't work either. I am at my wit's end with this. Can someone please help?

Check to see if the firewall is turned on.
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall
If the firewall was turned off, try this DNS server.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Why does my iphone keep dropping calls

Why does my iphone4 keep dropping calls??? It has been doing it for over a week. Does anyone have an answer.... AT&T says they are not having any problems and I have done everything but restore my phone.

Unfortunately, this has plagued the AT&T iPhone since the original model came out. It's most likely a dead zone causing the issue (I have the sameissue from time to time). You can also get a Micro Cell from AT&T, it's basically just an access point that allows you to pick up a cellular signal at home or work (where ever you set it up).
To eliminate any hardware issues, make sure you're on the latest build of the OS (4.3.3 for the AT&T iPhone 4) - I noticed you're still on 4.3.2. If you don't have a case, I suggest the Apple bumper or any case that covers the metal bezel on your phone, that will help as well.
Also, you can "reboot" your phone. To do this, hold down the metal sleep button on the upper-right corner of your phone until the "slide to power off" slider is displayed, then power off the phone. Wait a few minutes and turn it back on.
    Hope this helps!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I'm guessing you created the Enum on the front panel.  If you right-click it and create an indicator, it will match the type, and be an enum.  LabVIEW represents enums as U16, but because the types aren't identical (for example, your enum has 3 values, but a U16 has 65,536 values), LabVIEW automatically coerces (or converts) the smaller (enum) representation into the larger (U16) value.

Next restart the printer and the Router.
I had the same. Problem but it went away after rebooting the Router.
