Why Does OS X Change the Display of my Home folder?

Howdy,
I prefer an icon display of my HOME folder with 32x32 bit icons and a fairly tight spacing. I set this using Finder's Show View Options (Cmd-J) menu item. this seems to stick for a while, even through boots, but, at some point, it goes back to 24x24 bit icons with maximum icon spacing. Why won't the OS respect my display options in my own HOME folder?
Good Luck,
Herb Schulz

The .DS_Store file should be owend and accessible by you, but if not for some reason then sudo will be needed. That is why I included it in the command.
The settings in .DS_Store files can be inherited from parent folders as you browse the system, so one option is to remove all of them and have the system recreate them from scratch. There are a number of ways to do this, but an easy one is to use a tool like OnyX. In OnyX, go to the Maintenance > Rebuild section and uncheck everything except "Appearance of folders' content," and then click the Execute button.

  • Why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??

why does iCal automatically change the date of the entry i am making to the day before??
for example, when i am attempting to make a 'all-day' appointment on october 2nd 2011, it automatically shifts it to october 1st.
but if i am doing a timed appointment for only a few hours, it will allow me to put it on that day.
i am trying to put in travel dates so any help on how to fix this, would be greatly appreciated.

    alsdman,
Quit iCal, and try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Since that Library is now hidden, you have to use the Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart and check iCal for functionality.
Also go to System Preferences...>Language & Text>Formats>Region: and set/re-set the appropriate "Region."

  • Why does OS X change the permissions without my intervention?

I work on various documents at home, where I have a Mac. and at work where I have a Windows box.  In order to do this, I use Google Drive as my cloud storage to save the documents.
Now when I edit a Word doc in MS Word at Work, then save it to the Google Drive, I am able to open it on my Mac in MS Word for Mac, just fine.
However, when I edit the Word doc on my Mac, and save it to Google Drive, the sytem automatically sets the "everyone" permission to "no access". This is incredbily annoying. I have to go and reset the permission everytime to "Read and Write" in order to edit it the next day at work on my Windows bos.
Why does OS X change the permission of the document when I don't want it to! I want the file to ALWAYS be read and write FOR everyone PERIOD. Yet it seems to have a mind of its own and changes it.
How can this be fixed... this doesn't even make sense!

    korkyk --
Could it be that it is a function of Google Drive?  I share Word docs with Mac & PC Users all the time with no permissions errors or any other problems.  My husband and I share docs all the time between PC and Mac. Again no problem.  But we do not put Google Drive in the middle.

    welcome to the discussions
you may find that WMP is doing this for you.
There is a setting is WMP that means that it checks the info held in the file (and shown by itunes) against that held at Gracenote and 'updates' the info where there is any disagreement. On my copy its under the 'media library' tab.
Turn this off if its on.

  • Howe how do i change the name of my home folder?

I was completing a form and i noticed that it was commenting in a name that i have never used on this computer. did a little digging and discovered that this name is the name of my "Home" folder. The name is my wife's late husband's name!!!! LoL I have absolutely no idea how that possibly could have become the name of my computer since I have never used that name!!!! Well for some reason I can find absolutely no way to change it. Geez folks, did I somehow stumble in the Microsoft world? I thought Macs were easy! LoL. The name of my computer is correct. Now how do I change the name of my "home" folder, whatever the f**** that is????

  • Why I can not change the display when I turn the Ipad from horizontal to vertical position ?

Please help to give me the guide line to solve the problem in my Ipad
I can not change the display when I move the ipad from horizontal position to vertical position

Have you got a lock symbol at the top of the screen next to the battery indicator ? If so, then depending on what you've got Settings > General > Use Side Switch To set to (mute or rotation lock), then you can lock rotation either by the switch on the right hand side of the iPad, or via the taskbar : double-click the home button; slide from the left; and it's the icon; press home again to exit the taskbar. The function that isn't on the side switch is set via the taskbar instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4085
If there is no lock symbol then try a reset and see if rotates after the iPad has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Changing the name of my home folder

okay... ive joined a file sharing network called SolarSeek which i used on my PC as Soulseek and im trying to set up an upload folder for people to download from me. my girl did the initial setup on the Mac and put my whole name in it so when i add the folder to SolarSeek it shows my whole name - /User/myname/Music. i really dont want my full name displayed, id rather use an alias. ive changed my name throught the system but my home folder still shows my full name. is there in way around this?

First, ya need to create a whole new account for yourself by going to System Preferences > Accounts. Set it up the way you like it then click the Apple and choose Log Off. Log into that new account and open the Macintosh HD from the desktop, then open Users. Drag the folder with your full name to your desktop; it will ask for your password to do this. Then all is needed is to put the subfolders into their rightful place and all should be back to how it was in your original account!

  • How to change the name of my Home Folder

I'm just wondering how I could change the name of my personal home folder which is associated with my username. I heard that there's a script I can download or something.

First, before you go messing around with your home folder, make SURE you have a backup. If you have to ask how to make one, this process is not for you-it's advanced, and can mess up your data if done wrong.
    1. Open Accounts preferences (>System Preferences...>Accounts)
    2. Unlock the lock at the bottom, if necessary.
    3. Control (or right) click your account's name, and click "Advanced Options..."
    4. (IMPORTANT) Change "Short Name" to what you want the new short name to be.
    5. (IMPORTANT) Change "Home Directory" so that the path is right (I.E. if your new short name is "test1", change the path to "/Users/test1"-basically, DON'T CHANGE "/Users/"-just what comes after it-DON'T TYPE THE QUOTES)
    6. (IMPORTANT) Click "OK", and restart.
    Good luck! AND BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!

  • How can i change the name of my Home Folder on my Mac Pro?

I have only had the thing 2 weeks and have noticed the Home Folder is called Sharon how on earth this happened i do not know, not my name?! How can i go about changing it please?? Help!!

Changing the existing home folder name is complicated. I recommend you NOT do that.
Instead, create a new User with exactly the home folder name you want, and copy your files over to that new user. Once a few days have gone by trouble-free, and you are certain you have no issues, you can delete the old home folder.
While on the subject of users, Some users prefer the peace-of-mind of using an "ordinary" user account, rather than an Admin account for daily use. This makes it much harder for anything to "sneak" onto your Mac, as you need to authenticate anything to be installed in system directories.
To do this, create a new Admin user, log into it, and demote your daily-use account to a non-Admin user. When actively installing stuff, the Admin username and password will be requested.

  • Is there any way to change the name of my home folder?

It's called 'kristixhill' - I was recently married and want it renamed. Any suggestions?

    Congratulations on getting married!
There's a method described [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428]. Bascially it involves logging in as the "root" user and making a new home folder with the name you want and then creating a new user with the name of that new folder.
Make sure you backup your data before doing this.

  • Why Does Apple Keep Changing the Charging Protocols?

I bought an iPhone 3G yesterday, and after having a 1st-Gen iPhone for about 5 months, I'd have to say I'm not altogether impressed with the new one. Non-recessed headphone jack, check; faster downloads over 3G, check. The rest of it.. I dunno.
The most irksome detail I've encountered so far is that something has changed in the -- what is it called, the docking mechanism at the bottom of the phone that connects to the dock -- that makes all my previous docks (and I have quite a few around the house) obsolete. Worse, this iPhone will not charge from the adapter I have in my car, the Dension ICE>Link which originally integrated all my iPod controls directly into my car stereo.
When I got my first iPhone back in February, the first thing I noticed was that when I plugged it into an older "universal dock," I'd get an error message, "this accessory is not made to work with iPhone." I managed to work around it. I bought a new dock that is compatible, and I discovered that so long as I was using the iPhone as an iPod in my car, it would charge that way. So I wasn't losing battery charge if I listened to my iPhone/Pod in the car. That was good enough.
Now, with 3G, first, I discover that the Universal dock that I purchased with the old iPhone generates the same stupid 'will not work with iPhone' message that the OLD iPhone generated with an older dock. So this iPhone 3G does not work with a dock that I purchased for the original iPhone, which did not work with the dock I had purchased for my iPods. Sheesh.
But, again, it gets worse: now, when I slip the 3G unit into the cradle/adapter in my car, it will not charge ever, not even when I'm using the iPhone 3G as an iPod. The audio connects, I can still use the iPhone as an iPod and listen to it and control it through the car stereo, but I'm draining the battery when I do.
So, from iPod, to iPhone, to iPhone 3G, it appears to me that Apple has changed something in the protocols for each new generation so that all the docks and accessories from the previous generation are no longer viable. Why are they doing that? What is the UPSIDE of this very obvious and irritating downside, other than the upside for Apple that gets to sell me ever more accessories.
Are other iPhone 3G users encountering irritations like this? What sort of work around are there? Anything?
The GPS and the faster data speeds of 3G are nice features, it's also nice to have a flush headphone mount (I can use this one with a bluetooth stereo headset transmitter). But there are other ways that this unit is just not integrating into the way want to use it, and I may be very tempted to go back to the original iPhone.
Anybody want to chime in with their experience?
    Thanks,
    --PS

There are two messages you might see. The one you allude to, "will not work with iPhone" is merely a warning that the accessory is not shielded against the electronic emissions of the iPhone, i.e. you may get a little static on the audio. You can ignore that error and use the accessory. The other error is a "will not charge" and that's because the iPhone 3G no longer draws power from the FireWire pins in the dock connector. Apple has been phasing out FW support - the ability to sync via FW was dropeed a couple of years ago. 3rd party manufacturers have known about this for some time, but seemingly chose to maximize profit by not changing their design (especially for car chargers, since the power input is 12 V, which FW can handle, but for USB the voltage must be stepped down to 5 V). There are dongles available to drop the voltage and move the power to the correct pins.

  • Why does Apple keep changing the interface in iTunes?!

I liked the interface in iTunes 10, but found that I liked the interface in iTunes 11 even better. It seemed that everything was organized a little better. But... now we are back to an interface like we had in iTunes 10. Do the developers think about what they are doing before doing it? or, do they just need something to do so they just change interfaces to keep busy? I just wish they would make up their mind on an interface and let it be. I understand changing an interface if it will make things better. This change doesn't do that. I feel like we have taken a step back. Can someone explain this change to me?
