Why does OSX Server serve out Wikis so slowly?

Hi,
I didn't see this topic so here's my question. I've got OSX server running and updated. I've installed Mediawiki and it works fine, but its very slow. When I've had other Web pages up, they are quick, but for some reason the Wiki is incredibly slow. So slow that when you post a change, it times out before refreshing. You can see the progress bar move half way (indicating the changes are saved), but then you sit and wait and it times out. If you go back and refresh the page, your changes are there.
I'm on a University Campus and have pretty good internet connection speeds. Our Tech support stated he heard Wikis are served slow on OSX and I'd need to do somethign to speed it up, but no idea what.
Its a G4 with a couple GB of RAM. Any questions to help me trouble shoot this I'll be happy to answer. I know Leopard is going to have the Wiki server, but I'd like to get this working before then!

I guess I am somewhat confused, and my real
concern is does plain old OSX really provide the
basic server functions mentioned above
out-of-the-box?
Yes.
Here is more
info about what "OS X Server" is. If you don't
know you need it, you probably don't:)
Microsoft isn't much better with naming, considering
I used to use MS Office at home to do
schoolwork...
Yah, I'm a confused apple newbie, an old UNIX hacker, and I would like to learn more web type programming, so that is my interest in learning some new things.
Thanks for the answer.

I created 4 graphics in Illustrator CS3, downloaded them onto a CD cover template and saved as an .ai file which looks fine. When I attempt to then save it as a pdf, one of the graphics drops out. Appreciate your feedback.

When I click on Windows, 'Links' is not checked off. When I click  on

Why does my email drop out when I access my group contacts list

    Hi Helen
I think (from the other forum you posted to previously) that you are asking how to send email to a group in your address book, or other group of email addresses? You will need a third party app to do this, a number of which are available from the App Store.
Our MailShot Pro app is unique, as it can turn addressbook groups into special contacts that you can use from any Mail-compatible app on your iPad (Such as Mail, Photos, Maps etc.) as though the ability to send to groups were built into your device.
You can find MailShot Pro here on the App Store

  • Why does my PDF come out rotated when I haven't selected that?

Why does my PDF come out rotated when I haven't selected that?

What you are trying to do is a process that we call “refrying a PDF file,” a process that we at Adobe most strongly discourage. There are facilities within Acrobat itself that allow you to remove objects and crop pages without having to ruin the PDF by creating PostScript and then distilling that back into PDF, a potentially very lossy process. You lose all color management, all live transparency, and could have font problems in the resultant PDF file.
The Adobe PDF PostScript Printer Driver Instance is parameterized by joboptions set in its properties. These properties have a parameter for page rotation. If the options specify automatic page rotation, you may be getting these unexpected results on the basis of Distiller's analysis of each page and trying to second guess the orientation. You should also be aware that the PostScript generated by Acrobat (and Reader) is optimized for printing on a PostScript device, not for generation of PDF by distillation.

Why does my ipad black out and give message "Temperature" - Ipad needs to cool down... when it is not physically hot?  Sometimes it will do it every 5 minutes.  Can anyone help?  Feeling frustrated.

Have you tried a device reset?
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.
If that has no effect, it's sounds like it could be a hardware issue if the iPad is not even hot. If it's still under warranty and you have an Apple Store nearby, I would set up a Genius Bar appointment to have it evaluated.

  • How does OSX Server work

Hi, I have 4 iMacs and 2 Macbook Pro's that have recently been brought from separate locations to one place, though all are currently working independently.
I am looking into setting up OSX server so that everything can be shared etc. I was just wondering if one of my Mac's will act as the central server and contain all the data or it will be a case of all data remaining on each Mac and just shared across the network when needed. Its just that I don't think any of the Mac's has enough storage space to store everything across all units. Thanks in advance. Craig

Would all of our data across all computers then be stored within that 2TB? If so are there options for expansion of that storage.
Well, this depends on how you set up the environment.  First a thought about your data, then a thought about the storage.
You could store home folders on the server and everyone logs in directly to the server.  But, if you are using Photoshop (or even iPhoto), you will not have a pleasant experience.  User homes can remain on the individual systems and the users simply copy shared data up to the server.  Now, if you are looking to create an asset library, you might want to look at products like Cumulus or Portfolio.  Depending on your workflow, some form of digital asset management software may streamline your environment.
As far as storage, Apple provides a mini configuration that offers two 1 TB drives.  These drives do not come in a raid so the OS is on one drive and the other drive is just sitting there.  You can use the server in this capacity but you then have no redundancy on the OS drive or the data drive.  If you RAID the two drives into a mirror, then your usable capacity becomes 1TB but you gain redundancy (redundancy ≠ backup).  I will admit, I remain a fan of the direct attached storage model where you have a host system and you have storage.  By separating the storage from the host, you have the ability to move the storage should the host have trouble.  Perfect case in point.  A Mac mini Server is covered under Apple Care.  This is a consumer level warranty agreement.  So, if there was a problem with your mini and all your data is in the mini, then you are likely down for three days (1 day to diagnose, 1 day to get part of send unit in for repair, and the third to get it operational again).  I simply can not come to terms with sending a server with my enterprise data into Apple for repair.  This does not sit well.  But if the data is on an attached array, then the host can completely melt down.  I simply need to connect the array to another device and I have my data.
Then, would server back-ups be done by an external hard disk with storage that exceeds 2TB and time machine? Or is there a more advisable solution?
Realistically, a backup volume should be a minimum of 2x the capacity of your source volume.  This allows for historical increments.  Perhaps one of the best primers I have seen on backup is a study funded by the Library of Congress.  Check out this site http://dpbestflow.org/backup/backup-overview and take a look at the 3-2-1 backup rule.  This is a simple rule that nearly every company can follow.  But, it comes down to budget.  Too often I see companies that plan for the server and the storage and then never consider the cost of backup.  This is a crime as data is or currency.  Machines can be replaced often in minutes.  Walk into store and buy a new machine.  But your data... hundreds or thousands of hours or work can not be reconstructed as easily (or if ever).  Likewise, the American Red Cross conducted a multiyear study that concluded that "as many as 40% of small businesses do not reopen after a major disaster." (http://www.redcross.org/images/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m4240206_PrepYourBusfo rtheUnthinkable.pdf)   I can not stress the importance of backup enough.  And backup alone is not enough.  You must test restoration on a regular schedule.  What good is a backup if it doesn't work when you need it?
So, how do you backup?  This will depend on many factors.  They include number of locations you have access to, budget, capacity of data, etc.  Keep in mind that many cloud solutions (Crash Plan Pro, Carbonite, etc) provide a means of satisfying the off-site requirement.  However, if you are starting with a large data set, it can take many weeks (without a seed backup) to get your data replicated.  Many will simply use Time Machine as the starting point.  This is a good place to start.  But you must monitor it.  Trust.  But verify.
Ok, sorry for the rambling.  Actually enjoying a lunch break for a change

  • Does OSX server solve my need?

Hi all, this is my first post in here.
I am trying to setup/organize my email account, contact list and calendar for my business. I am planning to buy Mac Mini Server with OSX Snow Leopard Server. But not sure that will work for my case.
I have 4 pcs (window 7, 2 XP and window 2000), 1 mac book pro, time capsule 1TB, Synology NAS 2 bays server. Right now, each computer mainly access 2 email accounts by outlook or mail, one is general email (let says [email protected]) and the other is their personal email address (let says [email protected]).
    1. My goal is everyone of us by using difference computers can get the same email; especially the general email, no matter who reply/read/send.
    2. Since every computers contain difference contact information, I like to combine/organize/update all the contacts into one. And each of us going to share the same contact list from now on.
    3. I never use Calendar feature before, but it is good to have. Is it easy to setup for mobile phone?
    4. I understand Window may cause the problem, but in the worst case, what is the minimum budget/equipment should I get in order for me to get this plan work? (I have to keep using window due to some software)
    Thanks.

    First and foremost, welcome!

    1. My goal is everyone of us by using difference computers can get the same email; especially the general email, no matter who reply/read/send.
Have to start off with a simple question?
    1) Do you currently host your own servers? Or do you have an outside company providing mail for you? (Changes alot of my responses - but I will assume that you are having someone else do it for now)
    I just did this.
I washed my hands of the M$ monster last year and haven't looked back, although I have banged my head on the server cabinet door more than a few times when Apple frustrates me to tears.
There are two ways to accomplish this -
    1) Just use rules on the local machines.
Rule 1 - when email comes in and it's addressed to "[email protected]" then forward to user2@company, user3@company, user4@company. You get the picture.
Do this on all of the local machines. On the next machine, let's say it's "[email protected]," you do the same thing, and forward all that email to the other users using a rule on that local machine.
Everyone will receive all inbound email, regardless of who it was sent to. Probably the easiest solution. Definitely not the prettiest.
    Or
    2) When you set up your groups in WorkGroup Manager in SLS, create the relevant groups, such as Sales, Info, Testing, Returns, or whatever. Assign all the users to each group. When mail comes in to [email protected] everyone will get a copy of that email as long as they are assigned to that group.
SLS can do this also with serverside rules, but WGM is a starting point and will get the job done.
    2. Since every computers contain difference contact information, I like to combine/organize/update all the contacts into one. And each of us going to share the same contact list from now on.
You'll get mixed reviews on this board concerning this. SLS can do this with AddressBook Server. It's not the most elegant solution, but it does work. Typing 10 paragraphs on how to set this up would put everyone to sleep - just do a search for shared contacts. Those who have successfully set this up have shared their instructions. We use it on our iPhones as well.
    3. I never use Calendar feature before, but it is good to have. Is it easy to setup for mobile phone?
iCal is a pretty good calendaring app. The same thing applies here - do a search for shared calendars and those who have come up with a solution have posted their instructions. We use it everyday, and it gets the job done for our level of usage. We also use it with our iPhones and it although it's not Exchange, it does do a fairly good job at keeping you organized.
    4. I understand Window may cause the problem, but in the worst case, what is the minimum budget/equipment should I get in order for me to get this plan work? (I have to keep using window due to some software)
There is absolutely no need to ever keep a M$ machine again with the advent of VMWare, Parallels, etc. Run Windoze in a virtual machine on the machine where you need it.
I have to preface all this with one caveat though: If you are new to server technology or Macs for that matter, there will be a steep learning curve. I am not a stock holder, nor do I have a financial stake (<- gratuitous disclaimer) in lynda.com or Snow Leopard Server Reference Manual by Wiley publishing. But they will be the best spent $50 of your life if you are trying to figure this out without paying an ACSA to set up your system.
As for a budget - it won't be cheap. Plan on $999 for the mini alone, and then the cost of 4 Mac desktops or laptops (whichever you prefer.)
I would suggest you look at Apple's refurbished Mac section on their website. They are considerably cheaper than new products, carry the same warranty, and will save you a bunch of jingle. I have 41 employees and I have yet to buy a new Mac as the refurbed are basically the same thing.
    Hope this helped,
    Scott

  • What does OSX server offer over OSX ?

I see the documentation on Server, but am a little confused - I guess I've been subjected to Windoze too long ...
OSX provides ftpd, PHP server, httpd, Apache server, ...
    Is this correct?
So plain old OSX has some pretty substantial server functions, as compared to WinXP vs WinXP server. Plain old WinXP does not even have ftpd.
I guess I am somewhat confused, and my real concern is does plain old OSX really provide the basic server functions mentioned above out-of-the-box?

This seems to happen since I upgraded form 10.4 to 10.5.

    Hello
Do you have multiple versions of Vine Server application, perhaps?
If so, that might cause the described behaviour.
You may try using full path to the current Vine Server application such as -
    activate application "/Applications/Vine Server 3/Vine Server.app"
    or -
tell application "/Applications/Vine Server 3/Vine Server.app" to activate

  • Why does RMI server sets its connection address?

I use RMI for several years now and it is really great. But what I did not understand all this time: why the server has to inject its own address to a client. I only see disadvantages of this behavior and this is a big pitfall to all newbies using RMI (two nics, different networks connecting to one server).
So my question is, what is the reason for this kind of design? Do I miss some essential security/network point?
Probably a proper callback mechanism might be one reason, but what else?
I don't need answers like it is all documented and it is easy. As I said I am used to it, but I believe it is not as easy as it sounds and it is hard to understand for a lot of people. I want to give you one example: We are developing and servicing products which are operated in closed private networks. For service and diagnostics we have to connect to these networks via VPN connections. In such cases it is hard to connect to the system applications because all the RMI servers insists on their own address/name which might be know only to the local network.
Thanks in advance for your attention

Also, there are facilities to give the client a different address to the servers actual address. This is used in cases where, for example, the server is behind a NAT firewall. The server will only be aware of its internal address, but clients beyond the firewall will need to use the server's external address to reach it, so the objects returned from the registry will need to have the server's external address embedded in them even if the server and the registry are running on the same machine.Ok, so you have to set this to a reachable address for all clients. But in general the client already knows this since it reached the server already. So I don't see the point the server should have to change this afterward.
However I still think only the first point is not enough to have so much hassle in all other environments. Do you know a way to override the registry or possibly the client registration to ignore what the server does say to it as the "real" address?
