Why does other storage build up so fast?

I just did a complete restore and back up yesterday, 'cuz I had no storage space remaining.  I have no movies, no music, barely any photos or apps installed.  After the restore I freed up almost 9 GB out of 12 GB of storage space.  The only thing that I have used the iPad for since is to watch YouTube and surf with Safari.  So, why have I accumulated over half a GB of other storage already?
THanks!

Hi Bubba314,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
You are able to view how much each app is taking up storage space, which can help you determine what is taking up space on your iPad.  Take a look at the information in the article below for more information.

Why does Flash/Flex Builder 4 Premium downgrade to Standard when I install Flash Player Debug?
I installed a corporate install of Flex/Flash Builder 4 Premium, and verified that it was the Premium version was installed.  The Start Page said that Flash Player was needed to display the text, so I installed Flash Player 10 Debug -- first download link from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html
When I then started Flex Builder 4, the splash screen showed Premium, but as soon as the Start Page was visible, it showed "FB Adobe Flash Builder 4 Standard" --- Help | About showed Standard, and the splash screen from then on showed Standard.
A Google search showed a work around for this, but it requires a license for Premium, which I don't have because our corporate install has it built-in:
    http://bloginblack.de/2010/05/adobe-master-collection-cs5-breaks-flash-builder-4-premium-a nd-how-to-fix-it/
    1. Anyone know how to resolve this?
    2. Can Adobe fix this?
    Thanks!

I had similar problem. I was involved in Flash Builder prerelease program and few months later I installed Adobe CS5 Master Collection. After that I had a same situation.  Best thing was, my Flash Builder Beta was Premium version but acted like Standard, and FB from CS5 was Standard but acted like Premium. I removed CS5 and beta version of CS5. used CS5 Cleaning Fix and then reinstalled my apps.
I was lucky that I didn't have many big projects involved in FB beta or CS5 workspaces, I heard some guys had problems with migrated workspace configurations but I don't know what was the problem.

  • When syncing iPhone what does 'other' storage mean?

When syncing my iPhone with my mac. what does 'other' contain for my storage?

How to Remove “Other” Data Stored on the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

  • Why does "Other" take so much space on iPad vs. iPod touch?

When I plug the iPad into my iMac, I ownder why the Other category is so much larger than that for my Touch. The iPad is 32 GB, while the Touch is 16 GB. The are similary loaded with my music, photos and apps, but that Other thing is way much larger.
    Any thoughts?

Found the answer in another thread. Went from 7.2 GB to 1.12 GB after restore and backup.

  • Why would "other" storage on my iPhone 5 be 10GB?

I have an iPhone 5, running iOS 7.0.4, and iTunes is currently showing 10+GB of "Other" storage. Everything else together is only about 2GB. The largest app is only at 300+MB.
    Thanks,
    Mike

If you have an app that allows you to transfer documents, music or videos to it (other than the stock Apple apps), the content of that app will show up in "Other."
Generally, though, this is a sign of a corrupt backup/problematic app. Best thing to do is restore the phone as new and selectively transfer items back to it.

  • Why does "other" take up so much space on my iPhone?

I got an iPhone 5s 16 GB at the end of June 2014.  I keep running out of memory and when I recently plugged my phone into iTunes, I noticed that "other" is taking up around 3 GB of space. I know the usual delete pictures and browsing history spiel, and I've done it all. People also say that Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage is a good way to tell what is taking up space, but I went there and manually added all of the numbers and they only add up to 8.6 GB vs the 11.6 that my phone says is occupied, leaving an extra 3 GB unaccounted for and confirming my suspicions that "other" is not included in this. People keep telling me it's the operating system but isn't that already taken out of the original 16 GB and why you really only have 12 GB of storage to begin with? As I was looking through different forums and discussions, people kept saying to restore the iPhone from the iTunes backup and I am wondering if that would actually work...does anyone have experience with this? (Also would this delete my apps and music as well? I'm not very familiar with the restore from backup and could not really find any good information on it.) Do I just have to live with "other" eating up this much space on my phone? I've had iPods and I have an iPad, and I've never had this problem. Any help at all would be very appreciated, as this is very frustrating. Thanks.

That is normal size for others.. mine is around 2 GB.
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?

  • Why does "Other" category constantly increase in size on iMac hard drive?

    Hello
I am new to Macs and bought my iMac a couple of years ago.  Since that time, I have not installed any programs and have all of my photos, music, and documents on an external hard drive.  Whenever I use my computer, I mainly use iTunes, Safari, and DVD player, though not all at once.  I also do not use the Mail app and currently have Time Machine turned off.  So, for the most part, I try to keep my usage minimal and maintain it properly (i.e., installing new updates, emptying the trash, not using any anti-virus programs, etc.).
As of today, I have 485.77 GB free out of 499.25 GB on my hard drive.  It might seem silly to even bring up this topic, since space is not really something I have to worry about at this time; however, I do get concerned about the constant increase of the "Other" space.  As I have already mentioned, I do not have any other apps/programs installed aside from the ones that originally came with the computer, and all other categories do not change in size.
This is my first time submitting a question, and I have tried my best to search the help community for answers.  Although I have come across many discussions closely related to this topic and have tried to read different websites--such as http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html--I still feel frustrated that I still don't know what's going on.    Could anyone explain why this is happening with the "Other" category?  Is there a way to prevent it?
I know little about computers and even less about Macs, so I would appreciate any help.    Also, I have copied down some information that might be helpful to know.  Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide.  Thank you!
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
Processor: 2.5 GHz Intel Core 15
    Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Storage:
    Audio 4.3 MB
    Movies 42.3 MB
    Photos 133.7 MB
    Apps 2.57 GB
    Backups Zero KB
Other 10.72 GB  (this constantly increases)
PS.  If I added more memory, would it help my situation?

The best advice I can give a new user that is not familiar with the Mac is do nothing. The Mac will pretty much take care of itself. You don't need cleaners or virus protection.
Backup is key. As long as you have backup, if you make a mistake you can always restore from your backup. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection.
Try to learn the basics. You can learn a lot from reading about other user's issues here on Apple Discussions.
If in doubt, ask first. We're here to help you. Some actions are hard to undo.
As Csound1 mentioned don't delete anything from /var, /system or /library. BTW, var is for invisible files. They are invisible for a reason. System and Library contain the files that run your computer. No need to muck around in here to save a few kb of space.

  • Why is the Nightly build so much faster and has better looking features than the final Firefox product ??

The Nightly build is so much faster than Firefox, and the download feature is much better than the download feature in Firefox.

The Nightly build (22.0a1) is updated daily and has the latest code fixes and thus may be unstable.<br />
This version is meant for experienced testers only to check out new code and to see if it if working properly before it will be added to a release version, so it may be faster to some extend.
You should always install such an alpha (Nightly or Aurora) or beta release alongside of a the current release in case of problems (a lot of times websites may be broken).

  • Why does my chart build as a white box rather than a line in slideshow?

In creating a line chart, no matter which master theme I use, whenever I select "wipe" as my build, it looks great in the build preview window, but when I view play slideshow, a white box replaces my chart. Sure, I could use other build options, but when you're trying to represent the volatility of the stock market, wipe is the only one that truly works. Any ideas?

Thanks for responding. I'm using Keynote 3.0.1 and OS X 10.3.9. In addition, each time I try to send the file to someone else to see if they're having the same problem, they can't open any of my files (I've created several versions) because it tells them they are damaged. Wondering if I need a newer, faster computer?

  • Why does other applications' volume go down while facetime is on?

I use facetime regularly and sometimes watch videos like youtube at the same time. But ever since I upgraded to OS X Mavericks, Facetime seems to lower the volume of my other applications such that it is almost impossible to watch youtube without asking the other side of facetime to mute themselves. Is there a way to control factime's volume, or a way to control the balance? Thanks

Good catch... However there is an answer to this too. This kind of behaviour with sound, didn't start as you might expect, in Mavericks... It has been available in iOS from the beginning, imagine getting a cellular call in your car while the Music is playing... everything connected through your car stereo. As you might expect iOS dimms the Music so you can take the call automagically. You need this kind of asumption since your hands are busy and half your brain is driving a car.
I suspect that Mavericks, under the hood, has started to share a lot with iOS, it might not look like that from the outside but all that "memory compression" and "timer coalescing" and all the other low level stuff was never put there just like that, it was tested under iOS for years and then gradually put into Mavericks.
It happens the other way around too, iPhone 5S is the first 64-bit phone yes? Mountain Lion is 64 bit... it's exactly as Steve Jobs said... what we learn on a product we use again in the new ones and so on.
Developing software is a lot more then test cases, if you look at the current picture of how people are coding you would think managing a group a developers is no different that managing a group a people building a house. You get a guy, the architect, to design the house (the entire system) for you and then start the worker's parts each when they are needed. Job done. But that is very far from the truth, if you just want "a house" then it's good enough for you... but if you want "one of the best houses that can be designed for people" then you are looking at an entirely different process.
I won't go into the details as to why this is true, but one of the conditions of this kind of process is that some people will have "to suffer" change. Their minds want the "old behavior", they need it, they can't see why you would want it differently, these people just like things the way they are... There is nothing wrong with this, but it just means that Apple in the course of "finding things out" might upset some of us by apparently "not listening"...
This ladies and gentlement is the essence of change, not listening to some people because they just like things the way they are. They even demand the option to stay that way! This, I repeat, is not a bad thing... but in an effort to move forward some things must change, so you are bound to upset people.
Read this after half a bottle of red wine, alone at home on a friday night... you need to step back a little to put the good of the whole before what's best for you.

Im a first time BB user And really need to know how long should the BB 8520 battery life last- I bought the phone 4 days ago And had to charge it twice since then.

  • Why does my iPod drain battery so fast :(

I purchased an iPod Touch 4G 8GB in white and everything seems to work fine until recently, when I started to notice that the battery dies too quickly. I have all the settings to minimum (push notifications, brightness, bluetooth off, etc.) . what do i do please help someone

  • Why does my data plan get full fast?

what should i do not to waist my data? i have limited and its full in two weeks!!! what can i do on the iphone change settings or what need help.

Data can be difficult to manage. You may have to turn everything off and gradually turn functions on one by one weekly.
    Here are a few tips:
When the iphone goes into sleep mode, WiFi is turned off to conserve battery when unplugged from a power source. The phone will then use the cellular data network for all data needs.
MMS and Visual Voice Mail use data to transmit pictures, videos, and audio.
Turn off push notifications. The data usage adds up quickly.
Turn off push email. It’s small but it adds up. Switch to fetching email in manual mode.
Don't use location based alerts in the Reminders app
Turn off weather and stocks in notification center.
iCloud and iCloud enabled apps use data. When you update a contact it is updated in iCloud.  You can use the backup and Photo Stream they only use WiFi.
Find my iPhone is helpful but it also uses data.
Turn off all Cellular data if you are close to you limit.
iMessage uses data to avoid SMS and MMS usage.
    Things to avoid on 3G
    Anything that streams.
    Online storage apps
    Online gaming
Google Maps or any apps that use location data
    App Store or iTunes
If you are constantly finding yourself getting billed for extra data use every month it may be a better idea just to upgrade to a bigger data plan.
    Hopefully it helps

  • Why does LabVIEW Application Builder 8.0.1 create an executable that will not run?

My VI runs perfectly.  But when I generate the executable, it will not run.  I get a "File Not Found" error.  The file it can't find is "File Open+.VI" from vi.lib.  I've tried copying File Open+.vi into my project.  If still generates the same error.
    Attachments:
    OTS.zip ‏3105 KB

There error is coming out of FlowCal Server.  You use the current VI path to build up the file paths.  That works great in development but when you compile a VI into an exe, an extra layer is added.  See this KB http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/FD7DE8BC8FFC256C862565F4006BE363?OpenDocument
So when its an exe you need to strip the path one more time.
