That's my question, Why does pressing the L key twice (to cycle through dimming modes) remove a selected photo from a collection? Is my system the only computer that does this when I follow Adobe's directions to cycle through dimming modes by repeatedly hitting L? If not, how dumb is this?

As Ectophile says it "may" confuse the system but other than that it does not have any effect, my advice is to stay silent as the call centre equipment waits for a voice on the line before it connects an operator to you.

Why does pressing the down arrow button result in going to the bottom of the page and being nunable to go up or down one line at a time?

i dont know what to say in way of clarification. when looking at a page i am forced to use the "slide" on the margin which is very sensitive on very long documents instead of the down arrow to move one line. pressing the arrow results in going to the bottom and you cant return using the arrow.

The arrow to open the tab history of the Back and Forward buttons has been removed in Firefox 4 and later.

Why, when attempting to sort bookmarks, does pressing the ctrl key only minimizes the screen, not showing or allowing a sort option?

All I want to do is alphabetize my bookmark folders. Firefox appears to make this otherwise simple idea/function complicated, circuitous and difficult to navigate for a digital dummy.

This may have started after the latest version of Firefox was installed.

In current Firefox releases the search bar on the about:home page and the about:newtab page have an autocomplete=off attribute that prevents Firefox from saving form data and now show search suggestions just like you get on the regular Google search page.

Opening an application while pressing the shift key

Recently, Microsoft Word 2011 failed to open and showed the message, "Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close." I followed troubleshooting instructions on the Microsoft website. Nothing cured the problem, but creating a new user account did enable Word 2011 to open normally. That seemed to imply that "a corrupt user account" was causing the problem. I could not find any instructions about how to repair that, but at some point I came across the suggestion to "hold the shift key down and click on the Word icon in the dock." I did this and Word opened normally in my account. After this, Word opened normally without holding down the shift key. Apparently this fixed the problem.
My question is, what does pressing the shift key do while you open an application? What's different? Why did it work? What's special about the shift key in this situation?

It may be something specific to Word/Office. Individual applications may accept different launch arguments passed to them via key combinations, such as holding the Option key when launching iTunes to invoke the option for choosing the library to use.

Why does this bar show up when I press the tilde key?

Hey all, I have this mysterious bar that shows up when i press the tilde key in AE. It's distracting.

Try quitting After Effects, deleting the entire preferences directory, and restarting After Effects:
DRIVE/Users/USERNAME/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/

Sound Icon does not change when pressing the Mute Key

Hey guys,
I have a really annoying problem that only seems to start a few hours after booting my MacBook, it does not happen on a fresh reboot. When I press the mute button on the keyboard it does not mute the sound and the icon in the top bar does not show that the sound has been muted.
If I go to the control panel for the audio and do the same thing with the panel open it works just fine and the icon shows that the audio has been muted. Do any of you have this issue and how can I report this bug to Apple so they can adress it in their next OS upgrade.

I am having the exact same problem. It is even worse because it has happened to me in class before.
The other day, after coming to class I opened up my MBP from sleep intending to work on some things for class. As a general practice I hit the mute key as soon as I open the Mac. This always worked well with my Powerbook. However the system did not mute and the connection noises from iChat played out. This upset the teacher who glared at me for the rest of the class.
This is not an isolated incident either. I have had the tool bar and the translucent icon disagree a number of times.
I have found that if I hit the mute key twice it will generally correct the problem. But it is annoying. I hope someone at Apple is listening (in more than one way it would seem)

For instance, It may take 15 seconds to display a 2-digit number I typed into a blank field. the same software has no lag issues when I'm not recording it.

Yes and no. The CPTX file is on my PC. Our software that I'm making the demo of is on the network. but I'm not the "IT Guy" so I can't provide specifics; however, I work at a computer software company and we probably have more servers than employees. The network hardware is kept current. I've been making similar tutorials for 10 years and haven't run into this issue until switching to the subscription Captivate.

I checked the charger on my wife's mcAir and it worked.

Try a SMC reset
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
This process helps correct these power issues.

What, if anyting, does pressing the windows flag key and the "r" key do?

Last night some one with a very strong accent called, addressing me by name, saying he had been contracted to contact people and warn them of a serious problem that affecting many computers. He wanted me to press my windows flag key and the "r" key at the same time. Stupid me did, but then became suspicious and hung up on him. He never called back, and I turned my computer off. Did I give him access to something? What do I need to do?

I'm sure that was a scam call, but you hung up before they could do anything malicious to your computer. Pressing the Windows key + R just brings up the "Run" screen. It is completely harmless to bring up "Run," but if you had continued to follow all the steps this guy was about to give you, he probably would have tried to gain remote access to your computer or load a virus or some other awfulness. I'm glad you hung up on him!

Why do I have to press the tab key to edit or enter data in firefox mac? (and how do I turn off this quirk?)

to enter data in fields in forms and even in the search bar I have to press the tab key. If i do not press tab the silly mac beeps at me and won't let me type. I asked the mac geniuses and they blame firefox, guessing you guys will blame mac... but it is really annoying.

I've installed Mavericks on my Mac Pro. It works well, generally, but will not stay sleeping! Pressing the power button twice sometimes extends the sleep mode but even that seldom results in a full overnight sleep. File sharing off. What else can help?
