Why does Preview not display some PDF content which is visible in Adobe Acrobat?

I have occasionally received PDFs from multiple different sources for which some content (words, checkmarks, etc) simply does not appear in Preview. The full content does appear when view with Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, when viewing in Preview, there is no indication that anything is missing.
What is going on here? Is there some solution? I prefer Preview because it is fast ans versitile, but if it doesn't actually display the whole thing...

The answer is that some pdf options are not available in Preview. Adobe has a number of annotation and graphics and even file linking options which do not carry through to Preview. In other words, Preview is not 100% compatible with Adobe Acrobat, Preview is less capable, although it can generally handle probably 99% of what people do in pdf format. But there is a small collection of things that do not come through properly with Preview.
One obvious example is forms. While this may not be the situation you are asking about, note that Adobe Acrobat can create forms that one can fill out with Acrobat Reader. These forms have cells and one can go through them and enter text or information into those cells with Adobe's software. Sometimes the forms even include boxes to be checked or highlighted and so forth, all possible with a click using Adobe's own software. However Preview often is unable to enter the data on those forms. Again, the reason is that for certain somewhat advanced options, Preview does not have every capability that Adobe Acrobat (or Acrobat reader) has.
For simple stuff, however, Preview generally works well.

I use Xilinx ISE to run a small VHDL file. From Xilinx ISE goes to Modelsim in behaviour simulation (use the default do {hcic_tb.fdo} command), I find that thw waveform window does not display the following two signals:

SIGNAL filter_out_done                  : std_logic; -- boolean
while SIGNAL filter_out_rdenb                 : std_logic; -- boolean
shows in the waveform window. What is the reason for display or not?

It seems these two signals will display after I turn off optimization to vsim:

My new question is that in testbench it is acceptable to test a point with signal? Why are they get optimized? I want to ensure my future test signal is displayed without optimization turned off. Is it possible?

Preview.app will not display some PDF files

Since upgrading Yosemite I have found that Preview.app will not display some PDF documents, the documents open but all the pages are blank. This is a big issue as my work involves reviewing documents that are all in the PDF format. Strangely some PDFs work properly but I haven't been able to determine any common factors among the documents that work versus those that don't work. The problem documents do open correctly in Adobe Acrobat Reader but Reader takes over viewing of PDF container fields I have in several important FileMaker Pro 13 databases. Acrobat in the FileMaker databases for me is just as much of a problem as not viewing PDFs in Preview.
After searching the forums I followed suggestion in a post to try using version 7.0 of Preview.app (the version that worked under Mavericks) but that is also showing blank pages. I have noticed that the PDFs which open as blank pages also display that way in Finder and Spotlight previews. Could this mean that I have some kind of OS level issue here and not a Preview.app issue? Perhaps Finder and Spotlight use Preview.app to generate the preview.
I have posted this in a bug report to Apple but in the meantime I would welcome any suggestions or workarounds to try.

The built-in PDF renderer has trouble with that file. You might get better results with Adobe Reader.

Why does lightroom not display photos ?

Hello,
all of a sudden lightroom tells me "no photo selected " when I try to open a folder.All the folders are visible but the photos cannot be displayed.I am using lightroom 4.1
The last editing was done less then 12 hours ago without any problems.

Thank you so much for your reply.I solved the problem after fretting over it for some time. A filter was not turned off and once I turned it off all was well. Live and learn.

Ah, that explains why i see "European Set"....
One question, Doug: Obviously, you can select only the localization there. Is this PostScript Characters for all languages? Or is it possible to switch to something like true types, e.g. "Wingdings"? (I know, bad example, but i hope you get the point)

Safari will not display some media content despite Flip4mac loaded

As the subject indicates, Safari will no longer display some media content after installing Flip4mac. Where that media content would normally display all I see is a square with the Quicktime logo in the middle and a question mark in the middle. For example see the Dakar Rally site http://www.raid-live.com/dakar/en/index.shtml#. In my case Safari does not display the Flash content relating to "Premium Offers".
Mozilla displays everything fine though I don't particularly want to move between browsers depending on the on-line content. I'd rather not use Mozilla as in some cases the page appearances aren't as neat as those displayed by Safari.
Is there a way of restoring Safari back to its default settings in order get it to play ball.

Also a possible explanation is Safari cache files. Safari can be quite stubborn about holding on to these and refusing to let go of a cache file for a page, not showing up-dated content. Since the new user account didn't have any cache files Safari displayed the file correctly there, and used a "bad" cache file in your original account. Even clicking reload doesn't necessarily force Safari to take a new look at the page code. Drives me batty sometimes. If that is the problem you can go to the Safari menu item, choose Empty Cache and try again. I'v had instances though where I had to empty the caches and quit and relaunch Safari to get it to display a page properly.
Another thing to do, to make sure something is a Safari specific problem rather than a system problem, is to download Firefox and try it with a funky page. If the page works in Firefox, but not Safari, you know it is Safari being funny and not your system.
My truck was running rough the other day when I moved it to wash it. Was not looking forward to using it to haul stuff the next day, but when I started it then it worked just fine....

Why is Preview not displaying fonts correctly?

Since the last Snow Leopard upgrade, Preview is not displaying some fonts correctly. I checked to see if the fonts were embedded in the PDF (by resorting to Adobe Acrobat 5... which is not displaying them correctly either) and they are True Type with Windows encoding which as far as I know Preview OS X should be able to handle.
I tried deleting the Preview preferences in User/Library/Prefeerences and restarting but this made no difference. The same PDF works perfectly though on an old iMac that is running OS X Tiger!!!

Well I found a few minor font problems which seem to have cropped up since the last system upgrade, but none of those were the font in question. Also, as I understand it, the whole point of PDF documents is that the fonts are embedded in the document so you do not have to have the fonts installed on your computer to view the PDF properly. I use a lot of special fonts and when I save documents as a PDF I can send them to anyone on the internet and they can usually see everything as it is meant to be.

Safari seems to be messing up again. Had this problem quite a while ago. It's not displaying some pages correctly.
Notice the 2 enclosed screen shots. I went to purchase something (no personal info in the jpgs)
Notice the W-Safari. Little trash cans by the purchase items missing as well as the submit button and a few other things. So I opened Chrome.
Notice in the W-Chrome, everything is displaying correctly.
I've had problems like this some time ago but I thought they were fixed.

Preview 8.0 will not display some pdfs.

I review documents that are available as PDF files from my local government. Preview 8.0 (Yosemite 10.10) can not display pdf documents created by the Registry of Deeds (Land Titles) since approximately 2005. As well the Finder previews and icons show all blank pages. The PDF files contain the correct number of pages, they are just totally blank.
I installed Acrobat Reader (version 11.0.09) so I can continue to work, it displays all the documents correctly, but this is the first time in years that I have needed Reader on my Mac. The troublesome files appear as Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4) and Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.7), The documents I need to review might be TIFF or JPEG files that are made available as a PDF, I am waiting for their support department to tell me what format is used for the documents on the server.
Does Preview 8.0 only display something newer that Acrobat 5.0 (PDF 1.4)?

Have you heard back from Apple yet? Has it been escalated to Engineering?
I have only recently noticed this problem when trying to look at some bank statements which were downloaded. There is a background that is is fine but like you the other data shows in the Thumbnails and briefly in the preview when the Thumbnail is clicked.
Interestingly if I:
a)     Export as a .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
b)     Export... but then choose .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
c)     Export... but then choose .jpg all is ok.
b)     If I File / Print but save as a .pdf the background is ok but there is no other data.
c)     Finally if I File / Print to a printer all is ok
So a workaround is to Export .jpg and then Export that (.jpg) file back to .pdf. Sounds like a an Automator script would help!

Why does UIView not display PDF's as well as UIWebView

I do not want to use UIWebView for viewing a PDF for various reasons. The clarity of the document is clearly not the same when displaying the pdf pages with the CGPDF layer. Does anyone know what I can do.
The basic example in the Apple iphone Quartz example demonstrates the problem. My code uses very similar code.
The pdf's display fine, the clarity is off. It appears to be blurred or fax. Can anyone help me. I really need to fix this

You wrote that is not what is happening on you iOS system. You have used two browsers apples and googles and their PDF plugins and they do not seem to be working like you PC or Mac computers. The plugin operrate in iOS did you try iBook. The Web files served up by the Web servers are the same unless there is special HTML code that detect that your on a iOS moble device. If that code exist on the server may serve up something different for your iOS device then it does for you computers.
I do not know how to configure Chrome on an iOS device does not seem to exist. On your PC or Mac in the Crome address bar enter about:plugins you will see that PDF are handled by

Glossary: why does it not display?

For RoboHelp HTML 10 output, I have set the single source layout to use my custom glossary. However, it does not display in the .chm file. Is there some sort of plug-in required on my computer to display glossaries?

Why does iTunes not display hdcp content on my second monitor? The adapter monitor and cable have HDCP Support. This also occurs with a rocketfish mini display port to hdmi adapter.

It works for a time and then fails.
ITunes 11.04.
iMac Purchased Early 2013.

Seems to work when I swapped dapaters from theb 3.0 adapter to the mini display port adapter. THis is the same thing that got it worling the first time byt in reverse.
Had already tried clearing the PRAM. If it occurs again, I will have to try redetecting displays next time. Judging by what I saw reading through these forums it will happen again,

I reset my profile because of a problem displaying a particular web page.
I am now using the reset profile. Using this profile Firefox does NOT correctly display symbols and diacritic marks in my html pages. Such pages were correctly displayed in my old profile. They are pages containing text in French and Spanish.

Why aren't the symbols and marks displaying correctly in a brand new profile when they displayed correctly in my old profile.

What is View > Character Encoding set to? In my installation it's set to UTF-8.
