Why does PSE 13 save tiff as tif?

When I open a file with a tiff extension in PSE13, make some edits and then save, PSE13 saves the file with a tif extension. So I wind up with two files in my folder: the unedited file with the tiff extension and the edited file with the tif extension. I had expected PSE13 to ask me about overwriting the original when I clicked save. Happens on both Win 7 and Win 8 PCs.

The reason it does that is because the default setting for saving in photoshop elements is to ask if original on the first save.
(sort of a safeguard against saving over your original file)

If you go to Edit>Preferences>File Saving and change the On First Save to Save Over Current File, that shouldn't happen.

  • Why does Illustrator CS4 save pdfs with clipping paths and make rasters of gradient areas

    I am on a IMAC and upgraded to 10.6.8 Jan 2014. I am using CS4 Illustrator to create with. When i save my work as a pdf then reopen the pdf in Ill to make changes, the whole page has:
    A.) Multiple clipping paths around it
    B.) Most text has now become outlined. Not editable anymore.
    C.) Gradient areas have multiple clipping paths of the single gradient area
    D.) The gradient areas now become rasterized.
    This is very frustrating as now all of my marketing files, some 300+, are worthless. I don't know where to look anymore to find the problem.
    Please help.
    Thank you very much

    John,
    I have the presets as you have shown. I had been editing the supplied items as you suggested. Then figured i should ask the questions of those who are better than I.
    But still a bit confused as to why the new save places clipping paths around the document.
    Thank you John and Monika for your help.

    I do a save as "pdf" in the format pull down tab. I save to a folder on the hard drive. Where is the "Illustrator editability" check box? I presumed it is in Acrobat some where
    but i seem to be lost.
    It is in Illustrator's Save Adobe PDF dialog, which pops up before the saved file is written.

    Sorry i didn't mention this, but this seems to have occurred when using images and text from provided pdfs.
    That's a critical fact. If you didn't do the original save, the above is moot, and it's too late to exercise any control over the save process. Someone else failed to save for editability. The only thing you can do is clean up/repair the content, (release clipping masks, rebuild rasterized elements, expand objects, etc.), and save correctly as AI. Then, if necessary, re-save as PDF with the correct settings.

  • Does PSE 10 save files automatically if my computer crashes/shuts down suddenly?

    Hi, I was drawing out the base lines for a painting I am making with Photoshop Elements 10, when I left briefly. I think my computer decided it wanted to do updates suddenly, and it shut down everything. When I rebooted my computer and re-opened PSE 10, I couldn't find the file. Of course, I'm an idiot and neglected to "save as" before I left the room because someone in my house required my immediate attention.
    Does PSE 10 save your project at all if suddenly your computer shuts down or crashes? If so, then how to I find those files? Or am I screwed? Because I liked how it was turning out and I had spent a lot of time to get to the point I was at before my computer decided it hated itself. So, I'd really like to get that file back...
    Thank you.

    No, unfortunately there is no autosave in PSE.

  • Why does FCPX not save my titles

    Any ideas why titles do not save when you close down FCPX

    It's been posted here many times.
    Known bug, send feedback to Apple.

  • Why does my screen saver say "no photos" when they are definately there?

    I just downloaded the latest OS update and my screen saver no longer works.  When i go into system preferences and set up the folder to use for the picture slide show--it gives me an error that there are "no photos". But I have triple-checked and the photos are in fact there.  Why doesnt screen saver see them??

    UPDATE:  I spoke with Apple and there is NO fix.  I've set up my photos in a hierarchy as follows
    Pictures FolderSlide Show Pictures Folder
    Sub folder jpegs
    Sub folder with jpegs
    sub-folder with jpegs
    Everytime i have a new batch of photos worthy of the slide show--i add a new sub-folder.  This worked perfectly fine with the old OS but does not work with Mountain Lion.  According to the Apple support tech i spoke with, Mountain Lion does not support going into that level of sub-folder.  Essentially it is seeing the "Slide Show Pictures folder" but all it sees are the next level of sub-fodlers themselves--it cant go into the next level to see the actual photos.  Sounds pretty stupid if you ask me

  • Why does the Fireworks save for web function give better results than in Photoshop?

    Having used the trial version of Fireworks, I have noticed that the save for web function gives greater compression and image quality than saving for web in Photoshop. Why is this?
    As Adobe are not continuing in developing Fireworks, does anyone know if will they will improve the save for web function in Photoshop to match the Fireworks version?
    Are there any third party companies who anyone can recommend who will process large volumes of images for web?
    Thanks

    One of my favourite topics ;-P
    First, the save for web function in Photoshop has not seen any real updates in a long time. In Fireworks PNG export allows for fully transparent optimized files with indexed 256 or less colours, which is impossible in the save for web function in Photohop. It is unsupported.
    This is one of the reasons why Fireworks does a much better job than Photoshop. Another reason is that Photoshop adds meta junk in its exported files, and this also increases the file size (and should be removed, because there are also a number of fields which include information about your setup).
    One other caveat is that Photoshop's save for web functions neither allows for a choice in chroma subsampling, and instead decides automatically below a certain quality threshold to degrade the colour sharpness quality. The user has no control over this. (Fireworks also limits the user this way.)
    One thing to be careful of: FW's jpg quality setting, and PS's quality settings are very different - a 50 in Photoshop is not the same 50 setting in Fireworks.
    For jpg optimization I generally use RIOT (free): http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/
    (When you install, be careful NOT to install the extra junkware!)
    Fireworks cannot change the chroma subsampling to 4:2:0, which does degrade the quality a bit compared to RIOT and Photoshop in my experience. Photoshop adds useless meta information, even if the user tells it not to do that. RIOT allows you to remove that information, saving 6k. RIOT also offers an automatic mode that optimizes existing jpg images without degrading the quality further, and often saves 10k or more, depending on the images.
    Interestingly enough, in my tests exported Fireworks jpg images are always reduced in file size by RIOT, due to FW's jpg export limitations, without any image degradation.
    In my tests FW's jpg quality versus file size turns out to be the worst of all three. RIOT generally wins, or is at least on par with Photoshop.
    As for PNG export, Photoshop's save for web function is quite abysmal. No 256 colour full transparency export is possible, while Fireworks does support this.
    Having said that, there is a free alternative that leaves both Photoshop AND Fireworks in the dust: Color Quantizer. http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html
    CQ is an amazing little tool: with it anyone can create PNG files with full transparency and reduced to ANY number of colours! It means that a 512 colour PNG with full transparency is now very easy to do. On top of that, for more difficult images a simple quality mask brush tool allows the user to control and retain even small colour details in a PNG, while reducing the file size to an absolute minimum.
    CQ is one of the best kept secrets of a Web Developer's toolkit. And it is free!
    Both RIOT and Color Quantizer have a built-in batch mode. Both are available for WIndows. Not for Mac. If you are on a Mac, try imageOptim. Not nearly as good as RIOT and CQ, but quite passable.
    PS to be fair, the newest versions of Photoshop do allow for export of 8bit PNGs with full transparency through the use of its Generator functionality. But again, it cannot compete with CQ. And as far as I am aware, Generator cannot be used in Photoshop's batch processing (which, btw, is very slow! For simpler daily image processing tasks I have to do in batches, I prefer IrfanView, which is lightning fast! IrfanView).

  • Why does a simple save take so long?

    I am using FM 11. I have 18 files with lots of figures and perhaps this is part of my issue. It seems to take between 1 and 2 minutes every time I save. Is there some setting or some trick I can use to shorten the time FM takes to save my book or chapter? Thanks.

    > Files are not growing with each save ...
    That rules out recursive Text Inset imports (that import themselves). Your problem is apt to "merely" be instances of copy-into-document.
    If you need to hunt, save the document as MIF and open it with a plain text editor.
    All imports contain the tag:
    <ImportObject
    By-Reference Imports look like (EPS example):
    <ImportObject
       <ImportObFileDI `<u\><u\><c\>path<c\>filename.eps'>
       <ImportObFile `../../path/filename.eps'>
    Copy-Into Imports lack those <ImportOB... tags, and look like (EPS and TIF examples):
      <ImportObject
       <Unique 3288853>
       <Fill 7>
       <Separation 0>
       <ObColor `Black'>
       <RunaroundGap  6.0 pt>
       <RunaroundType Contour>
    =TIFF
      <ImportObject
       <Unique 3288835>
       <Fill 7>
       <RunaroundGap  6.0 pt>
       <RunaroundType Contour>
    =EPSI
    followed by metadata and thousands of lines of hex code.
    Clue: the original file name of the imported object can often be found in the meta, but the presentation varies with file type.
    Alas, as you can see with
    select object in frame
    Graphics > Object Properties,
    Frame pretty much forgets what an import was, and where it came from, when (*) Copy Into is used. Big problem for information stewardship, not to mention capacity planning.

  • Why does PSE 10 Organizer jumble up photos on the same date from different locations ?

    I have PSE 10 installed on a PC with Windows 7. My camera is a Nikon D90 using a Sandisk 8 gb SD card. When I take photos at different locations on the same date and download them into the Organizer , instead of keeping the photos from the different locations together by location, it jumbles them all up. It does not keep them in order by time taken from first to last for that day , it just mixes them all up in random order. Why ?

    Hi Lyndy,
    When you use Albums and Keyword Tags, you aren't moving the images around (they stay in their folders) - you just look at them differently.
    What you can try is this:-
    1) select one of your folders in folder view so that it displays all of those images in filename order
    2) click on the instant album button (to the top right of the thumbnails)
    This will generate an album with the same name as the folder
    3) Now switch to Thumbnail view
    4) click on the new albumb name on the right side
    Now, all the images should be in date/time order - you may have adjust the options
    The real power of the Keywrd Tags is the many different ways you can look at the images.
    If you have a Keyword Tag structure like this:-
    Places
         Scotland
                Holyrood
                Britania
    Then if you assign the Holyrood and britania tags to the appropiate photos, there are various ways of viewing the photos.
    Selecting just Holyrood would show only the Holyrood ones
    Selecting Scotland would show both Holyrood and Britania ones.
    The only limit seems to be your own imagination
    I hope that gives you ideas rather than adding confusion
    Brian

  • Why does my screen saver not activate in Yosemite on my iMac

    I have a new iMac running the latest OS but cannot get the screen saver to activate. I have tried setting it to activate after different times, changed which screensaver to be activated, and rebooted the iMac. It works very rarely but I can't work out why it works on those times but not the vast majority of the time. Any help would be appreciated as I have looked on the forums but not found an answer that works for me

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
    Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
    While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
    Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
    After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
    The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • HT204379 Why does my screen saver "zoom" in on photos from my iPhoto?  Can I stop it from doing this?

    I've recently moved up to Mtn Lion on a new MacBook Pro.
    I finally figure out how to connect my iPhoto images with my screen saver (the way I alswyas did on previous Macs).
    But the weird thing is that the Screen Saver zooms in on the photos!  Sometime choosing a very uninteresting part of the photo to suddenly enlarge on my screen!
    What gives with that?  Can I stop it from doing this?  It's like cropping my originals - many of which I have already cropped ...
    Appreciate any help that you can give on this.

    The only fix here is to find a third-party screen saver that supports the behavior you want. Apple has adjusted its screen saver options over the years, and the latest ones are what you see in the system preferences.
    The only way to change these behaviors is to hack the screen savers. The effects descriptions and some of the behaviors have settings in this folder:
    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Slideshows.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Cont ent
    There may be a way to modify one of those settings to prevent the zooming for the given set of screen savers (or at least one of them), but I would not recommend modifying these files arbitrarily as you might break something (or at least make sure you have a full and restorable backup you can access before doing so). There are a couple of known modifications to them that can adjust some behaviors, but image zooming isnt one I know of.

  • Why does quicktime 7 save movies to grapher movies?

    Installed the latest quicktime  7.6.6. Have the pro key.
    When I save a movie as a self-contained movie, it saves it as a grapher movie. When I open this movie, it opens in grapher and I can only play it, not crop it for instance. And if I open it in Quicktime it's the same problem.
    Can I simply get rid of the Grapher software as I don't think I will ever need it?
    Did I miss something in this new version of Quicktime?
    In previous versions I would just go  to 'save as' and it was quick and easy – files saved as quicktime movies (.mov).
    Appreciate your insight.

    It does NOT have a new screen option, JUST a NEW MOVIE option...
    there are eons of complaints about this.. on this thread
    She cannot record my image..She just has NEW MOVIE OPTION.. We were online for one hour.
    I had NEW SCREEN option on my Mac osx 10.6
    she was forced to buy quick time 7 pro and it does NOT give her NEW SCREEN option.. absolutely NOT

  • Why does PSE destroy Exif entries?

    Someone looking at my images in Flickr asked me why I was shooting in Auto mode?  I don't - I usually shoot in Aperture Priority.  Well my Exif wasn't showing that.  I called Canon Tech Support and they could not give me an answer.  So I kept digging.  I keep all of my original images, and put ones that I have edited in different folders.  So I took one of the original images, and sure enough it shows I am shooting in Av, and then looked at the version that had been edited in PSE 10 and that shooting mode entry was missing.
    So I took the original, and then used Canon Digital Photo Professional to display the Exif, and took a screen shot (below).  Then I opened the same file in PSE 10, did an Auto Levels, saved under a different file name, used Canon DPP to display the Exif, and took another screen shot.  You can see below that the "Shooting Mode" entry is gone in the changed photo, as well as several other exif entries like Light Metering, White Balance, etc.
    PSE 10 Bug?  If so, what about other versions?  Thanks.

    I downloaded an Exif viewer tool called ExifToolGUI that is pretty good because it shows all the tags and values.  Here is what it shows:
    On the original photo taken with the Canon SX50, if you click on the "All" button to show all tags, there is a section called "Canon"  with a tag "CanonExposureMode" that has the value "Aperture-priority AE", which is the only tag that shows Aperture Priority.
    On the photo that has been edited and "saved as", the whole "Canon" section is gone, so there are no tags at all showing Aperture Priority.
    On the original photo taken with the Canon 70D (which shows the shooting mode correctly in Flickr), there is a tag in the more generalized "ExifIFD" section with a tag "ExposureProgram" and the value "Aperture-priority AE".  And there is the additional "Canon" section with tag "CanonExposureMode" that has the value "Aperture-priority AE".  So the Aperture Priority shooting mode is shown in 2 places.
    In the edited photo taken with the 70D, the "ExposureProgram" tag has been properly maintained, but again the whole "Canon" section is gone.  So there is now only one tag with the value "Aperture-priority AE", but that is the one that Flickr is picking up.
    In my opinion, PSE10 should not be deleting the "Canon" section, but it seems like Canon shouldn't be putting high level important info such as the shooting mode there either, or at least also place it in the generic section.  Then again, the Photoshop developers need to test for exceptions and code for them.  Seems like camera makers should have come together a long time ago and developed a standard set of Exif tags that would work for all cameras.
    If I was to bet, it would be that this problem is in the current version of PSE as well.  Couldn't upload the full file because of size restrictions, but here is a link to the unedited file that I placed on Dropbox (hope I did it right): https://www.dropbox.com/s/s526l6remwhk6b8/IMG_1632.JPG  (doesn't work when I click on it, probably because it is https, but if I paste the link into a new window it works).
    Thanks.
