Why does rendering use so much space?

There are a lot of things I like about FCPX as far as it's time consumption, background rendering and what not. However, the render process specifically seems to chew up a lot more space than it did before and I cannot get around this because FCPX automatically renders in the background. I obviously want to render my video so I can view it in full quality, but is there another way that makes it use less space on the hard drive? I feel like the project (after rendering) occupies more space on my hard drive than even the raw footage sometimes. I have to keep manually pausing the renders or my hard drive will run out of space before I've even done most of the editing.
If I would start running low before I could just access the files and delete some of the old render files, but I don't know how to access them how it's set up now. It's just a library.fcpbundle.
Any suggestions. I have multiple hard drives with a lot of space available, but I would like to use them as economical as possible to get the most out of them.

In the current version use File>Delete Generated Library (or Event) Files, depending on what's selected.

Why does Safari use so much memory?

Below is a screenshot of the "Safari Web Content" process using 2.57GB of ram! When I took a screenshot yesterday at 1.7GB I thought that was a lot!
It seems Safari will use as much ram as can be thrown at it. I had a lot of windows and tabs open, but really doubt I had more than a few hundred megs of content loaded in those windows and tabs, never mind 2.6GB!
My experience with Macs and OS X would pretty much be perfect if it weren't for Safari. It brings my system down to a slow grind because the virtual memory/swap is always thrashing so badly.
Apple goes on about the "magical" performance updates they make to Safari - well guess what? They mean nothing when Safari has all your ram tied up and the swap file is thrashing like crazy.

Glad it's better now, Doc. I'm still wondering if you empty your Safari cache regularly.
I use GlimmerBlocker, and love it. From what I've read here, it's less problematic than ABP, and it's built so it doesn't get out of date, with an OS/Safari upgrade. Just a thought for ya.

Why does TimeMachine use so much disk space?

I'm curious about this... after many horrible days with a completely unstable Leopard install, I bit the bullet and did another clean install. I also got myself a new LaCie 2big disk array specifically for TimeMachine.
Now, after yet another glorious Leopard OS hang/crash/cold reboot, TM is backing up some 50GB of data, 2 hours after the last backup, during which time at most a few e-mails, some html and gif data files, and maybe 5GB of copied music have changed.
The first backup made by TM was on 08 December.
Of my 450GB reserved for TM, I'll have about 150GB or so are still available after the current backup; meaning that *TimeMachine has used almost 300GB of disk space in 10 days* !
I have 120GB of data on my disks, however TM is set up to not back up any OS files, and to also exclude the Applications folder, the VMWare virtual disks, and all Cache files.
If I was to guess, I'd say TM is right now making a full backup of all the files, completely regardless of what it apparently has backed in its entirety up _several times_ before.
If that's true and the best Apple and their TimeMachine can come up with, then I'm sorry but I'll have to conclude that TimeMachine is utterly worthless -- unless one never ever has an unexpected system restart (in Leopard?! Keep dreaming...) or untold terabytes of disk space.
Is there a way I can find out what exactly has been and is being backed up, and when?

Agreed. Time Machine is pretty, but it's a huge resource hog. Not only is it consuming drive space like it were an unlimited resource, but hourly backups (in which some files are being compressed, I think) eats away at CPU time. Unless you're zooming along on the latest and greatest machine while doing minimal work, you can definitely feel a performance lag when Time Machine is running.
My recommendation is to shut it off. Then, periodically CTRL-click on the Time Machine icon and choose Back Up Now. Hopefully Apple will soon upgrade the program to have actual features, other than switching it on and switching it off. Hourly backups seem excessive, even for the novice user.

Why does iPhoto use so much freaking disk space?!

When you import photos it makes TWO copies of them into the iPhoto library package, one in "originals" and one in "modified" regardless of whether you edit them or not. Is there any way to get iphoto to leave your files alone and just index them?

1 - no - iPhoto does not ever make a modified if the photo had no modifications - you probably have auto rotate set on your camera and when the photo is rotated according to your instructions then a modified version is created - turn off auto rotate and no modified will be made until you edit the photo
2 - you can not change this - iPhoto always maintains your original so you always can revert to it and it uses the unmodified original as the starting point for all iPhoto edits so you are never more than one version away from the original - non destructive editing
3 - if you do not want a relational database Digital Asset manager with non destructive editing there are many alternatives - version tracker or Mac update will show you many

What is kernel_task? And why does it use so much memory?

I have an iMac 27 inch late 2009 purchased new in July 2010. It has a 3.08 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor and 4 GB of Memory. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and just now was unable to save an Excel document to an external hard drive with plenty of space with the warning I did not have enough memory. I went to my activity monitor and indeed there is very little memory and at the top of the usages of memory is kernel_task? I don't know what that is and why it requires so much system memory.
Also, there is an installation I aborted for an app I realized I didnt need and for some reason something it out there still taking system memory and I get a message when I shut down that it can't install. How do I delete that.

Why does lion use so much memory?

Why so much memory usage in Lion? Have 8GB in Lion 10.7.2 (waiting on 7.3 until I can be assured it won't hose everything) and keep running out of memory without having anything but a browser open. Currently do not have anything in background except a clipboard manager and am running Safari with 6 primarily text-based tabs--total memory usage: 2.63GB. Comparable memory usage in Snow Leopard was around 900MB. Have had memory climb up to all installed memory, though at that time I did have about twenty tabs open, some with Flash and othe multi-media, but, still, did not have comparable problems with Snow Leopard. What gives? Memory freeing and reclamation does not seem to be working efficiently either. Have used Purge and FreeMemory to some benefit, but there seems to be something deeply wrong with the pool of inactive memory. Also, either the kernal, or some other vital core piece of the OS, gets transferred out to Virtual Memory when the memory usage gets above 6GB...then machine crawls and I have to reboot. Very unhappy, not sure I should have given up my Windows 7 machines for the Mac...they screamed speedily and had none of these problems.
Very disappointed with so much about Lion. Only reason I upgraded from Snow Leopard was to get the vaunted hardware gains when running VMWare Fusion 4. Other aspects are very bad--lots of crashes, software incompatibilities, lots of beachballs, generally sluggish performance, will not start screensaver, will not sleep, will not shut down properly--have to use power button...goes on and on....then death-dealing problems with 10.7.3 update...all going to **** now that Steve Jobs has moved on to other duties? Trying to convince myself it will all work out, but not sure...trying to devise a de-migration path back to Snow Leopard that will not take me a hundred hours to implement.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the slowdown.

Why does "Other" take so much space on iPad vs. iPod touch?

When I plug the iPad into my iMac, I ownder why the Other category is so much larger than that for my Touch. The iPad is 32 GB, while the Touch is 16 GB. The are similary loaded with my music, photos and apps, but that Other thing is way much larger.
Any thoughts?

Found the answer in another thread. Went from 7.2 GB to 1.12 GB after restore and backup.

What is DNS Services and why does it use so much data?

I have 300MB to use a month on my iPhone 4S (most recent iOS) and I'm normally pretty good with it because I'm connected to WiFi a lot. All of a sudden, my data usage spikes and my DNS services usage has gone up to 40MB. What is this and how do I keep it from spiking like this? It's incredibly annoying.
Also, any other tips on saving data while connected with the 3G? As mentioned before, I only have 300MB so I like to stretch it for the month.

TS4009 Why does Music use 3 GB on my iPad when I'm using Cloud? Is it the pics of album covers for my playlists? If so can I replace them with simple list like my Song list?

I noticed that I am using three gig storage for Music when in fact I am using the cloud for my music. I also noticed that when I choose set list I have pictures of artists on my iPad. Could that be the reason I am using so much space? I use the cloud in order to not use up much storage space for music on my iPad but yet it appears I am.

I belong to iTunes in order to put music on my computer and sync to my iPod. I don't know if I belong to iTunes Match?? I have noticed that the vast majority of my songs when not connected to the Internet are grayed out and not playable.. Then again there is a minority that are playable. Why are the color album photos of my playlist on my iPad.music. Does't that use up storage space? Is there a way to get rid of them?

Screen came up that Firefox is using too much space?????

Doing some web browsing and a screen came up saying that Firefox was using too much space. How can I fix this?

I have found the message useful as a reminder to restart Firefox soon, because of it I am a lot more likely to restart Firefox if leave the room so it will have been restarted automatically by the time I get back. It is measuring memory, but once my CPU time gets near 50 minutes it may soon be 1 hour then 2 hours, I think Firefox is running better now both because Firefox has identified some problems and because of the reminder from AVG.
I wouldn't advise disabling the warning, and I don't think anyone on the AVG forum thread would be doing it either but here is their own thread:

What is "Directory Service" and why does it "use up 194%" on my istat CPU app monitor?
Ever since I installed Leopard I've noticed this happening more and more - especially when I install an external hard drive or unplug my ethernet line - this is plainly weird and never happened under Tiger - the temperature shoots up to 84° also - I always to a restart to get rid of it but it's kind of worrying....anybody have any ideas?

Had this happen myself.
It does have something to do with Spotlight/searching. Should go away after a while, or so I have heard from other users, 'cause it hasn't stopped driving me and my fan mad yet.
Am going to have my MacBook index and follow-up on indexing and whatever else it feels is necessary to finally allow me to search in peace over the weekend while locking it away where I can't hear it.
Hopefully that does the trick.
If it wasn't for things working better/faster and most things looking better I might actually consider taking Leopard off again ...

Don't know -- but you can do a little detective work by going to Settings > Cellular and look at the apps in the section titled "Use Cellular Data For." Each app that has used data will show the amount used since the statistics were last reset. If you tap on "System Services" at the bottom of that list it will show the details of system usage. You can reset the statistics at the bottom of the screen. Checking those numbers for a while should help identify what is going on.

If that did not reduce Other, then unfortunately the source of the problem is contained in your backup and the only way to solve it is to save as much of your data as you can, then restore as a new iPhone and start over. You can save your photo stream photos to the camera roll (by opening the my camera roll album, tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll), then import your photos and videos to your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083), write down all your email account settings, back up your contacts, calendar, reminders and notes by syncing them with iCloud. If you have any voice memos, you can email them to yourself. If you have voicemails, music not purchased from the iTunes store or photos in your photo library that are not on your computer or in your iTunes library you'll have to use 3rd party software to save these, such as Touch Copy (PC and Mac) or PhoneView (Mac only). Then transfer your purchases to your iTunes library (File>Devices>Transfer Purchases) and sync your phone. This will save most of your data, but you will lose your text message conversations.
The other option is not to back up to iCloud and instead back up to your computer using iTunes. You're problem with Other won't go away and will probably continue to get worse until you bite the bullet and deal with it.

Does iCloud use up storage space on my MacBook too? When I copied files from an external drive to my iCloud drive, my available space on my MacBook went from 40GB free to less than 2 GB. I thought iCloud was separate storage where I can free up space on my MacBook.

To free up space you want to look for:
1) files you no longer need. Omni DiskSweeper will help you see what's on the SSD.
2) if you use iPhoto be aware that it has its own trash can. If you delete files from iPhoto you must then right click on the iPhoto trash can and select delete or the pictures remain on the hard drive.
3) look for movies, tv shows, digital photos and music you can move to an external drive or mini-flash drive and then delete from the SSD. These are very large files so you can free up lots of space with just a few deletions. Example: my entire Documents folder is smaller than one two hour movie.
