Why does secure empty the trash take so long to perform?

When I empty the 'secure trash' folder, it takes hours to perform what use to take seconds or minutes to do.

Try deleting less at one time.
Unless you're trying to get rid of malware/dodgy software, there's not really much point in using 'secure empty trash' if what you're worried about is someone recovering your deleted files. Experts can still recover stuff even after that.
The only way to get rid of your data securely is to overwrite the entire disk several times with zeros (Disk Utility has a function for this, and it will take a long time.).
And if its really confidential, put the disk in an incinerator or a blender , the only 100% surefire method.

I want to delete a folder but every time i do, it reappears on my desktop, even after I empty/secure empty the trash.

I contracted Security Tool the same way about ten minutes ago on my Win7 Home Premium laptop. Firefox prompted me to do an immediate update the way it normally does, with a convincing update screen that looks like the typical Mozilla update prompt. However, the installer I downloaded was in fact "Security Tool." The program firewalls Firefox to prevent searches and also prevents access to Task Manager via Ctrl-Alt-Del. On the surface this appears to be a particularly nasty strain of malware / scamware, and FF users need to be warned and/or innoculated immediately.

  • Why does SECURE EMPTY TRASH take so long (several days)?

I am using OS 10.3.9. I didn't empty the trash for quite a while, and several days ago clicked SECURE EMPTY TRASH. The emptying process began but has not finished even now! Does it take THAT much longer when one uses SECURE EMPTY TRASH? I see that the little message window for Trash says:
Item to delete: 114,158 This number hasn't gone down now for several minutes.
Several times I have stopped the Empty Trash process to shut the computer down or just because I wanted to stop it, but it seem to me that after "Emptying the Trash" has been going on for so long, it ought to be finished by now. I welcome any sunlight you can shed on this. Thank you.

When you choose to Secure Empty Trash, the system
must overwrite the area where those items area a
minimum of 7 times for it to be considered secure.
When you have that many files in the Trash, this can
    take quite some time.
So, unless you have something that is confidential in
the Trash, your best option is to Empty Trash
    normally.

OK, and thank you. You have answered my question; I now won't be worrying that something is awfy. The Secure Empty Trash is still emptying and it is down to about 77,000 items. I have clicked the YES, MY QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED button and I appreciate your reassurance.

  • Why does emptying the garbage take so long now? It has greatly slowed down my workflow.

Before Mountain Lion and maybe even Lion came out emptying the trash was instantaneous... What the **** happened. Now if my hardrive gets full and I have a **** load of stuff to remove it takes HOURS to do so. This is ridiculous, why does it take so long to delete something?

Have you checked the option to Empty the Trash Securely? That will slow it down significantly.

  • Emptying the Trash takes forever...

I bought a new 20" iMac there last month and have Leopard 10.5.6 installed. I have noticed however that emptying the trash can take up to an hour+. Does anyone know the reason for this? On my old PowerMac G5 i can have the trash emptied in seconds no matter what is in it.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks

Oh my god!! why didn't i think of that... i was there thinking of every other reason this would be happening but the correct and simplest one. Just checked it off.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Why does logging on to Firefox take so long?

When I first log on in the a.m., it takes so long I think it isn't doing it and hit the icon again, and again. Finally it does log on but then I have 3-4 Firefoxs on the bottom of the screen. Why can't it log on after one attempt and not wait for 4-5 minutes?

I'm having this issue as well but no answers I encounter make any sense to me.
    IPhone 4S, iOS 5.0
    First iCloud back up.
    Full Wi-Fi signal.
Backing up contacts, bookmarks, texts, 10 apps and calander only.
Pictures, videos and notes have all been deleted.
I got an estimate of 4 hours to back up. Cancelled and did a soft reboot, which made the estimate time vary constantly from 15 minutes to three hours when I started again. The progress bar never made it a third of the way in an hour's time so I gave up. I can only hang out at McDonald's for their wi-fi for so long.
Oddly, I checked my storage like suggested above and had 2.3MB in my camera roll...even though I had nothing in it. I shut that off anyway.
BOth Apple and AT&T support were not helpful.

  • Why does "Print..." take so long?

It has always seemed OS X has to work very hard (e.g., spinning beach ball) to bring up the print dialog. Granted, it gets better with repeated print commands as you might expect. But it is always a little slow, and REALLY slow if you haven't printed for a while.
(I assume most - if not all - people also experience this phenomenon.)
Why do you think this happens?
Thanks for any education you can give me.
    charlie

    Hi, Charlie.
See "Mac OS X 10.4, 10.4.1: Print dialog slow to appear." In your case, the last paragraph therein may apply.
Earlier research I did on this problem, i.e. before Mac OS X 10.4.2 was released revealed the following:
If one performed an Upgrade install of Tiger, one may experience:
    - Slow appearance of the Print sheet when printing in applications.
    - Some apps may launch more slowly, e.g. in my case, Photoshop 7.x.
The issue is with the cupsd (CUPS daemon) configuration file.
The fix described in the hint "A possible fix for a slow Print dialog" on Mac OS X Hints solves both problems.
The slower Photoshop 7.x launch revealed itself with the following line in the system.log:
    May 8 16:43:52 PM-G4-D500 /Applications/Adobe Photoshop 7/Adobe Photoshop 7.0/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Photoshop 7.0: cupsd mach_msg error (ipc/rcv) timed out
The error that shows up in the /var/log/cups/error_log file when you attempt to use a Print dialog before implementing the fix is:
    W [10/May/2005:13:53:45 -0500] emptyReceivePort: mach_msg send returns: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
After implementing the fix, the Print sheet displays instantly and Photoshop launches as fast, if not faster, in Tiger as it did under Panther. The messages above no longer appear after the fix.
    Good luck!

  • Why iPad upgraded IOS7 the charging take much longer time?

I upgraded my iPad3 to IOS 7, everything seems fine, just the charging is much much slower. I'm using all genuine Apple's charger. Don't know why.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • Why does backup of the iPhone take FOREVER???

Really, did Microsoft sneak in and write this portion of the itunes software? I came home from vacation tonight and plugged in my iphone to update some apps. I am informed that there is a 3.0.1 update to plug a hole in some SMS vulnerability. So I figure that I'd better do that.
    It downloads.
It gets ready to backup my phone.
It starts backing up my phone.
I am at 3 bars of about 40 or 50 bars after 10 minutes. At this rate it won't be backed up by morning!
What is going on here? How hard is it to take an image of a few hundred MB of apps and such? Seriously. I have a few gig of songs on there too - but those haven't changed so they shouldn't have to be backed up anyway. They are already on my computer where I ripped them from CD's.
Something is bad wrong with the implementation of backing up the iPhone. It plain doesn't work right. I'm still at three bars, just popped over to check.
At this rate, the antivirus program will kick in at about 2am and probably lock the whole thing up.
P.S. Before you start, I already tried the whole "delete all your apps and reinstall from itunes and ONLY EVER install any app again from itunes - not the app store. That doesn't do SQUAT except wipe out all your high scores and settings on your apps. And give you ONE really fast backup. Then it is back to insane backup times.
REALLY - what is going on here. Is this a known problem and is there a cure, because it makes backing up the iphone a nightmare.
    -Tom Steele

    Rick,
Thanks for the reply. I have pared down my app list significantly and don't know what app might be responsible for the problems. I don't have Myst or AppSniper (although I do have Pandora Box...)
I guess that I expected Apple to be more immune to this sort of thing than MS because they keep a much tighter (perhaps too tight?) rein on what developers can do with their apps.
*I have found what appears to be a solution*. Or at least an improvement. I bailed on the update last night as I needed my phone this morning and I wasn't sure it would be working when I woke up.
This afternoon I tried again using a different approach.
Instead of agreeing to install 3.0.1 I decline and go into itunes. Then I click on SYNC. This does a backup that appears to go much faster (still 30+ minutes, but very typical for me and steady and sure). THEN I click on UPDATE and the process is much faster and straightforward. At least it appears to be so far. It is updating and restarting right now. I'm hopeful that it will be without problem.

  • Why does exporting a quicktime movie take so long?

I'm exporting an 88-minute-long HDV movie as a self-contained quicktime without recompressing. The media is all on one ESATA drive and the target disk is a second ESATA drive. It takes five hours and uses >150% of my CPU during the export. It seems to me like it shouldn't take nearly that long, nor should it use so much CPU since basically all it's doing is copying data from one disk to another, right? Any idea why it's taking so long and using so much CPU? Thanks.

No, wrong. It is creating a completely new GOP structure for your MPEG2 based edit.
    Ah.
This is one of the drawbacks of working/delivering in HDV ... With that in mind, is there any special reason you are creating an HDV self contained master?
I'm making it self contained so I can put the whole thing on my MBP's internal hard drive and show it to people without having to carry terabytes of media around. I'm staying in HDV because I started out working in Final Cut Express, which converts everything to AIC, and had very bad results: my media files grew by a factor of three, everything was ridiculously slow, and my machine crashed regularly, particularly during captures, which was unbelievably frustrating because that meant I had to babysit the machine throughout the entire capture process (and often through multiple iterations of the capture process interleaved with machine reboots). In fact, the only reason I started using FCP instead of FCE is so I wouldn't have to transcode.

  • Why does Firefox's first startup take so long?

    Hello
I was hoping if someone could help diagnose and resolve a performance issue I am currently experiencing with my Firefox. On first initial load, it will take 3-4 minutes before the window actually appears.
I've done some research and tried the follwing methods but unfortunately with no success:
    # Disabling add-ons - although I don't know how to remove old obsolete ones altogether.
    # Creating a new profile
    # Amending the shortcut to include "Prefetch:1"
Sebsequent start-ups are ok and I experience no problems - it is just the first initial start-up.
Any guidance and advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

Not sure what that link is to as I've been waiting 15 minutes now for it to open and still only got a black screen.
My back up gets to just over 3/4 done and then seems to freeze or I am told iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.
Sounds like whatever is in that link might be useful, but it's taking as long to open as running a back up so I may give up on that. Is there something that can be added into this thread if there is a magical way of stopping them (sometimes I can click the x in the bar and stop it, sometimes I can't).

  • Why does Illustrator CC 2014.1 take so long to launch?

I work on an iMac and use OS X Yosemite. Every time I launch Illustrator CC 2014.1 it takes 11 minutes to open.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I remember when AI used to take forever to launch. Now I run in 64-bit, and since AI updates it is reasonably faster at launch. Are you running your iMac in 64-bit? or 32?

  • Why does my signal drops and takes a long time to search and connect when I turn on or off my cellular data? And normal text messages are not getting delivered properly. It shows sent but later it will show try again, Is it just me?

I do not know what the problem is, but after the latest update it is really hard to send text messages. It is taking alot of time to send the messages, it is not the problem with the carrier because sending text messages with the same number in the same area is really easy on my normal nokia 1100. Please suggest me what I should check. Second problem I am facing is the carrier signal drops to nothing when I turn on the cellular data. It has to then search for the network and connect again the same happens when I turn the data off again. Please tell a solution. I do not think it is the problem with the hardware because the phone is hardly 2weeks old and everything was working properly with ios 6. It initaly had problem with the battery on updating to ios7 but that was rectified with the new update but again these are the new issues am facing.

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?
