Why does SL automattically turn back on when I shut down?

Why does my mac mini automatically restart when I shut down? I shut down via the normal methods (apple menu, Shut down...) and as the shut down process finishes the computer automatically restarts and goes to the log in screen, If I shut down via the log in screen it turn's off. What gives?
Shouldn't it just shut down when I ask it to and not return me to the log in interface ?
Help please.Thanks all.

Seems that some process is calling it back.

Probably a process in your account and not systemwide.
Go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. BShutdown and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Test.
EDIT: Also, unmount & disconnect all peripherals except Apple keyboard & mouse.

    Hi,
I bought a macbook pro (Mac OS X 10.6.8), and just recently last week when i turn the brightness down to black, after a couple minutes later the screen turns back on. Then when i touch the trackpad then it goes back to black. Is there any way where i can change this setting??? because this didn't happen before and now it just constantly occurs.

  • Why does my MacBook turn itself on after being shut-down completely?

I've noticed recently that when I get up in the morning my computer is on after I completely shut it down in the evening.  Has someone hacked into my computer?  If so how do I check to find out?

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities.
Check System Preferences, Hardware, Energy Saver, Power Adapter to see if 'Wake for Ethernet network access' is checked.  (MacBook 2,1 with OS X 10.6.7 illustrated below).
If you leave your computer plugged in to Ethernet, and/or AirPort wireless turned on when you shut down, the computer will wake when it receives an incoming Ethernet network signal. Your router or WiFi router sends signals fairly frequently to see if your computer still attached.

  • HT201413 Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes

Why does Data Execution Protection or lack thereof keep shutting down iTunes?

Sounds like you have a battry issue but don't want to believe it.
If a car was running fine on one tank of gas, then you filled it up with another tank of gas and it began to run funny, one might suspect that tank of gas. But let's just say coincidence blew a valve-- would you think the new tank of gas was the culprit?
BUT WAIT!! It just might have been! The gas could have been of higher octane and put more more strain on the valves; you know, like going from 87 octane (OS6) to 93 octane (OS7) and showing you the engine was on the edge of compromise.
Sometimes you have to go with common sense. If everything else is ruled out, it must be the battery. And if it runs fine one moment in OS6 but immediately ***** in OS7, I'd believe my battery was suspect-- though comfy-- in OS6 but the OS7 showed its true power.
Moreover, if you had the answer-- or didn't want to believe someone's more competent advice-- why did you even call?  You've already shown that you don't know much when you asked if you could go backwards after setting up the new OS as a new phone.
Additonally, if you're such the know-it-all, but yourself the $29 battery and put it in yourself. It's a piece of cake.

Could you be more specific on what you mean by "ages"? It should be a matter of seconds... but for that matter, the iPad rarely needs to be shut down. Personally, I only do it when about to board an airplane.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • Why does clicking on "Preferences" (to change home page) shut down Safari?

What can I do to prevent Safari from immediately shutting down when I click on "Preferences" in an attempt to change my home page? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Mark
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sounds like the Preference file is corrupt.
In the Finder, drag to the desktop the com.apple.safari.plist folder found in your User Account>Library>Preferences folder.
Restart Safari. Open the preference file. If no crash you'll need to reset your Safari preferences to your liking, plus any custom settings found in the Edit Menu (spelling) or View Menu (status bar, bookmarks bar, custom icons in the "Customize Address Bar" ).

i have a HP pavillion dv4 notebook. sometimes when i close the lid and let it go to sleep, and then come back to use it, the computer is off. i get a weird DOS-like black screen with white text when it comes back on asking me if i want to start windows as normal or something like this. has anyone encountered this? does anyone know how to fix it?

Try resetting the iPod.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home

You can also try another cable and usb port.

  • G3 B&W turns back on immediately after shut down.

Last weekend, I installed a new scanner/copier/printer/fax machine on our b&w. I believe my hubby adjusted the memory settings just before this without telling me. Ever since then, the thing turns itself back on every time you try to shut it down. So, we've been letting it run.
I have no idea how to fix this. Has someone hijacked our mac or what? Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi, JBear -
...my husband added another 128mb and then adjusted the settings. Could this be the issue?
    Possibly, but probably not.
The usual cause for a machine auto-restarting itself is an attached USB device. This is most often a printer, digitizing tablet, or dongle, but can be anything USB.
There is a hardware instruction coded in the Mac that allows it to be started by a USB signal - that's how the power keys on keyboards that have them work.
The problem is that on shutdown some USB devices seem to either reflect a signal, or generate one, which the Mac interprets as a boot signal.
Since, based on your description, the last item added was the multifunction printer, I'd consider it as being the likely suspect.
    Solutions can be -
    • If the device is connected via a port on the keyboard, relocate it to a different USB port.
    • Try adding a self-powered hub to the USB bus, and connect the device to it.
    • Turn the device off before powering the Mac down.

  • HT5361 Why does my mail stop me from restarting or shutting down my computer?

I use monroefarquhar@**** for all my mail. Learning to use Mac i have made some type error with my mailboxes. Should i delete all mail? The problem is keeping me from turning off or restarting my computer.
    <Email Edited By Host>

Can you quit Mail normally or do you have to force quit it? If you don't want to lose your e-mails, go to Mail/Mailboxes/Export Mailbox. You can put them on your desktop for now. I would then try deleting your account and then setting it up again.
Who is your e-mail provider and are you using IMAP or POP?

  • Why does my screen turn black when I play iTunes while working on iPhoto?

Why does my screen turn black when I play ITunes while working on iPhoto? I can't click off of the screen but get a message that reads Shut down computer by pressing button in back then turn computer back on by pushing button in back. That's followed by Chinese letters (which I cannot read). I have had other problems when playing iTunes (actually, a radio station on the Internet) while working on  iPhoto. Before, I got a window that would pop up and tell me I had no disk space available, that I would have to quit applications that were open. Not many were open.
It would be nice if I could solve this problem once and for all.
Thanks in advance for all the suggestions. I truly appreciate your help.

  • Why does my iPad show no sim when turning on cellular data?

Why does my iPad show no sim when turning on cellular data?

Check the right and left sides of your iPad for a small hole the size of a paper clip (remove your smart cover if you have one).  If you see this, then you have the wifi + cellular model.  If you do, use a paper clip to remove the sim tray (or the sim removal tool that came with your iPad if you have it) as shown in the image below.
If the tray has a sim card in it, push the sim tray back in to re-seat it in the side of the iPad, then turn it on to see if the error message re-appears.  If it re-appears, take it to a Verizon store and have them give you a new sim card.
If you have a sim tray but it is empty, you'll need to go to a Verizon store to get a sim card for it.
