Why does SQL Developer insist on opening up the package header?
When expanding a package (clicking the '+') SQL Developer keeps opening up the package header (at least the first time you click it). I'm very rarely interested in viewing the header and it's annoying to have all those tabs open.
See SQL Dev 2.1 RC1 - Expanding packages under Schema Browser
Don't know if dev filed a bug against this, so to be sure you'd have to log a SR on Metalink/MOS.

Why does SQL Developer sometimes refuse to activate the debug controls?
I can find the procedure or package that I want to work in, compile it for debug, set break points, provide the required input parameters, and sometimes SQL Developer works as expected. That is, it activates the debug control buttons (step into, step over, etc.) But, other times, it just leaves them greyed out. Why? I find this frustrating.
OK, maybe my version of SQL Developer is a bit old, but I have seen this occasionally in every version of Sql Developer I have used. I now have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63. We have an Oracle11.1.0.7 database. I have a 64-bit Windows7 desktop. I think my Java version is also a bit old, but it seems to be compatible with the EBS R12.0.6 application that I need to support. I'm not a Java expert. If I go to a C:\ prompt, and type: "java -version", It returns: "1.4.2_04".>
I now have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63.

Maybe so but why aren't you using the latest 3.x version? There have been many bug fixes and new functionality since the version you are using.

You think? Java 7 is out so version 1.4.2 is definitely old. And especially if you support EBS because I think R12 itself uses Java 1.5
You may want to check the EBS forum
Java/JRE Version compatabile for R12.0.6
And now you have an Oracle 11.1 database?
Here is the official link that has the jdbc and oracle version support
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/jdbc-faq-090281.html#02_02
>
See section - Which JDBC drivers support which versions of Javasoft's JDK?
11.1.0 OCI and THIN Driver - JDK 1.5.x and JDK 1.6.x
Please note that JDK 1.4 is not supported by the 11 drivers.

Did you notice that last line?
You may want to rethink your plan to use those older versions of Java and SQL Developer. -
Why does SQL Developer sometimes not allow me to "Disconnect"?
Sometimes when I'm ready to close SQL Developer, I try to get out gracefully, but the "Disconnect" option for the only connection I have open is greyed out. Why? The only option I know then is to close SQL Developer by clicking the "x" in the upper, right corner.
My version of SQL Developer is a bit old: I have SQL Developer 2.1.0.63. We have an Oracle11.1.0.7 database. I have a 64-bit Windows7 desktop. I think my Java version is also a bit old, but it seems to be compatible with the EBS R12.0.6 application that I need to support. I'm not a Java expert. If I go to a C:\ prompt, and type: "java -version", It returns: "1.4.2_04".Actually, I think the link Alessandro posted is helpful. I cannot reproduce the behavior on Win XP, but can on Linux (somewhat). That is, Properties gets greyed out at times, but not Disconnect or Apply Filter. Retrying the right-click resolves the problem, as he notes.
So I assume my point (1) would be more nearly correct if restated as "Bug or timing issue".
As for (3), I really cannot give a good example. If I open a Tool menu item like Monitor SQL or Monitor Sessions on, say, the SYSTEM user, the Disconnect option is not greyed out and if used will close all the open windows for that connection. If I run Debug on a package/procedure/function, Disconnect also remains enabled. Clicking on it produces a "Cannot Disconnect" dialog warning with this text: "The database connection cannot be closed while an active debugging session exists". Perhaps I'm mistaken entirely, or just confused after seeing that behavior on some older version of SQL Developer

I regularly need to open the same website in two tabs, to be able to view changes made between opening the first and second tabs. In Firefox 3.x I could press Ctrl+T and start typing the website title or URL, which would be auto-completed by Firefox. This enabled me to quickly open the same website in a second tab. Firefox 4 does not do this, instead it wants me to switch to the existing tab. This is not what I need.
Of course it is possible to open the same website in a second tab via e.g. a bookmark, but this takes more time and effort. It would be great if I could select Firefox's behavior in this situation. To create a duplicate of an existing tab in Firefox 4, do one of the following:
*middle-click the icon on the left end of the URL/Location/Address Bar
*hold down the Ctrl key and drag the tab until a small arrow appears at the border between tabs, then release the mouse button, then release the Ctrl key.

Why does another users profile sometimes open in the wrong windows login?
Today my son was logged into his Windows 7 login, and tried to install the plug-in from PageRage.com which adds to his Firefox (8.0.1). When it restarted his Firefox browser it opened my Firefox instead, with my tabs, bookmarks, persona, everything. The plug-in shows up in my add-on on my Firefox. I closed it and reopened Firefox from his quick launch button and his opened up, but the add-on was not there. How can I stop my Firefox from opening on other users on my computer, and keep his add-ons on his Firefox?
Are you using the same Windows account?
Are you using the profile manager to start Firefox with a specific profile or do you use desktop shortcuts to start Firefox with a specific profile?
In that case Firefox may have opened the profile that is selected as the last used profile in the Profiles Manager (profiles.ini -> Default=1)

Why does my iPad 1 not open documents from my updated mac-pro laptop pages since i updated the mac. Have updated latest pages for iPad 1 it could and still not able to open docs as i could before update on mac-pro
The most recent version of Pages that you can run on the iPad 1, running iOS 5.1.1, is not compaible with the newest version of pages on the Mac.
If you had the old version of Pages on your Mac, and off hand I can't remember what version it was, you should still be able to use that version and then it will be compatible with the Pages app on the iPad. I updated to the newest version of Pages some time back but was able to keep the older version as well. -
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler fit-in??
Hi Everyone,
Wish you happy new year 2011.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler support conceptual, logical and physical in our modeling or only logical and physical?
We all use Erwin for modeling. Erwin works without database repository storing models in desktop folders and provide additional reporting. I find some place SQL Developer Data Modeler talked about repository need.
Does SQL Developer Data Modeler store the models in local/network folders instead of Database server?
What are the functions need database based repository to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler?
We are thinking of using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our conceptual, Logical, and data dictionary need. Will it help in our need?
Do we need to face any surprises on using SQL Developer Data Modeler for our need?
Thanks in sharing your experience and helping me out.
RI1) Do we need to have Oracle database at back end to work with SQL Developer Data Modeler? No, Data Modeler use Oracle database only if you create reporting repository.
Data Modeler is free, you need database license only if you want to log service request
2) Will SQL Developer Data Modeler create any tables (as backend repository ) in Oracle database to store Model details? no
3) Do we need to create reporting schema in backend oracle database to generate reports of SQL Developer Data Modeler's items such as Entity/attributes etc?no, reports can be created out of current loaded design. However having reporting repository will give you additional benefits - history (reports can be generated for every snapshot of your designs there) and multi-user usage, you can create your own reports
4) Do we to use SQL Developer Data Modeler reverse engineer from DB2, SqlServer, Terra data etc?Data Modeler has full support for Oracle, DB2/390, DB2/UDB(LUW) and MS SQL Server. Reverse engineering from other databases (including Terra Data) is at generic JDBC level - you'll get some and some will be missing (no check constraints for example).

SQL Developer 4.0: 'Open Declaration' bugs
There are several issues I have with this function:
1) Sometimes, when used, it would just "hang" the UI, loading the CPU for 50% for a few seconds.
2) It doesn't seem to work for functions/procedures outside packages, you have to use 'Popup describe' instead. Is that intended?
3) I don't know if it's actually related to 'Open Declaration', but Logging Page sometimes throws a pair oracle.dbtools.parser.plsql.DictionaryQuery errors, supposedly around the same time hangs occur I may be wrong on this one, but still thought it's worth reporting:
Error 1:

Error 2:
ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis
The 'and owner = :owner' part is obviously misplaced, causing the error.
P.S. A bit off-topic: SQLDev gives me quite a lot of various warnings both on logging page and in console. They don't seem to break anything, but should I report them anyway? And should I create a separate thread for each group of these, if I do?Okay, I've done some testing. It's far from exhaustive, but shows that 'Open Declaration' works differently in worksheet and package pl/sql editor, and that it depends on the case of the procedure/function that is inspected!
I also found out the cause of ORA-00907 message.
The cause of hangs also became somewhat possible to determine.
Sorry I couldn't test it more, but I already wasted about 2 hours on it, because I did it on our test (much slower) database, and each hang lasted about half a minute. I also didn't test inter-package 'Open Declaration' behavior, because I still have work to do. Hopefully what I found will be enough.
Also, another note is that "hangs" didn't burn the CPU while I tested it, unlike on production database.
We don't have HR schema anymore, so I unlocked SCOTT/TIGER forgotten by everyone, which had no functions/packages/whatsoever, only 4 tables.
All tests were done under 'SCOTT' user. Here's the test suite:
Creating the necessary function, procedure and package:
create or replace function z_test_opendecl_f return number as

-- open declaration hangs, then shows "PL/SQL unit CALL_z_func does not exist" messagebox
vRet := Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_z_func;
--inline SQL
--Shows the same behavior
select Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F --works
into vRet
from dual
where Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F = 1 -- works
or Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 -- hangs, but works
or Z_TEST_opendecl_f = 1; -- messagebox
--WITH SCHEMA SPECIFIED
--Usual calls mostly exhibit the same behavior, except all of them hang on "Open Declaration" now
-- call the package function
-- popup describe opens 'SCOTT' user popup (!?)
-- open declaration hangs, then opens package spec
vRet := SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC;
--inline SQL
--Shows the same behavior
select SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F --works
into vRet
from dual
where SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_F = 1 -- works
or SCOTT.Z_TEST_OPENDECL_PACK.CALL_Z_FUNC = 1 -- hangs, but works
or SCOTT.Z_TEST_opendecl_f = 1; -- messagebox
end;
There was also an error on production DB I wasn't able to reproduce while testing:
while editing package body, calling 'Open Declaration' on function name inside inline SQL did nothing - neither the message box appeared nor declaration was opened, it also doesn't hang.
I can't disclose the names, but it looks like this:
select myFunction(t.id,vLocalVar) into vLocalVar2 from tablename t;
We have a lot of objects on production, maybe it times out or something, I don't know. Autocomplete also doesn't work unless I call it explicitly with ctrl+space.
An assumption regarding the hangs: we have a ton of public synonyms and a lot of java objects; the hangs are probably related to poor java object querying performance discussed in neighboring topic. -

Why does SQL execute inner selected functions again in the outer select?
Hi,
Why does SQL execute inner selected functions again in the outer select?
Given:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION K_TEST
RETURN NUMBER IS
BEGIN
RETURN 1;
END;
SELECT K_TEST, K_TEST FROM DUAL;Will (logically) execute the function twice.
SELECT intest, intest
FROM (SELECT K_TEST intest FROM DUAL);Will execute the function twice too!
Why can't SQL buffer the inner result?
Does anyone have an idea on how to achieve executing the function only once? My original called function is quite heavy and returning a user defined type. Adding predicates, the function is executed 3 or 4 times!
Thanks for any tips,
K.Hello

Why does premiere elements 8 say I need the right 'codec' when trying to open hdd video? where can I find this codec?
hey, I'm not sure if I've set it up for hard drive video. When I
try to import it says it's the wrong codec. I had a similar problem with windows moviemaker.
except the error message there (moviemaker) said 'too many methods firing from events'
hmmm. I don't know what it all means. I have an hdd sony digital handycam.
dcr-sr45 is the model. any suggestions?
