Why does the migration assistant keep extending completion time?

I'm trying to use migration assistant to transfer from a MacBook running 10.5.8 to a new MacBook Air, but the file transfer time balloons first, then reduces, then balloons again and doesn't ever reach the completion stage.  Any thoughts before I take the issue to the Genius Bar?  Thanks.

It could be part of OS X's Resume feature. Any app that is open at shutdown will re-open on boot unless the tick in the following image is deselected when shutting down/restarting:
Also check that Migration Assistant isn't listed in System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items.

    Hi Peter,
In order to analyze your issue better, we need more detailed information.
Did you mean when you launch the Windows store app, the app can't start? Was there any prompt message or error code? Did this issue occur on all Windows Store app or specific one?

Why does the EEvents message come up every time the computer is opened after being shut off?

You need to check the software you run.
Some officially supported and sold Mac versions of software use Wine for porting in some fashion or another.  If some program you are running is spawning these Wine processes, its probably buggy and not shutting down correctly.
How to figure out which are Wine and which are not...?
Well if its a Cider ported game, you just see if there is a Cider logo on the game.
If its Wineskin ported, theres no super easy way to tell, depending on how much its been modified, but you can look inside the app (right click and "Show Package Contents") and go to Contents/MacOS and see if Wineskin executable is in there.  Unless its a very old version of Wineskin it shouldn't be able to hang like that without major issues int he Windows software running in it, and I don't know any any company would release it if it was that buggy.
If its WineBottler Ported, you'll notice quickly because it launches X11 and runs the windows under X11... of course not all X11 apps are Wine, but if you have a program that launches and runs in X11.app then you can look inside it at Contents/MacOS to see if its Wine related.
It could also be Crossover, or a Crossover port of software... you'd have to dig around inside of its app too to see if it looked like one of those.

  • Why does the keyboard come up a second time on the ipad

Why does the keyboard come up a second time on the ipad

Try these basic things and see if the keyboard goes away for good.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit the Kindle App and restart. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by e tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • What exactly does the migration assistant to?

I'm thinking of upgrading to a faster Mac, I'm tired of the slowness of a Core 2 Duo... when I get my new one, what is everything the migration assistant will do? Does it transfer all my apps and their product keys over? Or do I have to reinstall stuff? Do all my settings stay the same (dock, network, etc.)? What gets transferred, and what doesn't? And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?

    Eric wrote:

Migration Assistant has several options that interact to produce different results depending on how you combine them. For instance, if you choose to transfer apps but not user accounts, then obviously user account settings don't get transferred. Conversely, if you opt to transfer users but not apps, user-specific application settings in the user domain will be transferred but won't do anything.
You also have options to transfer all or only some user accounts & to transfer all or only selected folders in their home folders. Transferring apps is an all or nothing process -- you cannot pick & choose which apps get transferred like you can with users. However, Migration Assistant will not overwrite newer versions of applications with older ones. Similarly, network & system settings will be transferred only if applicable to the new Mac.
Even if you opt to transfer everything possible, a few apps may require reinstallation or reregistration if they include certain types of anti-piracy technology.
IOW, there is no simple answer; however, Migration Assistant is usually able to sort out what you want quite well from the options you choose.
And once the transfer is done, will my old Mac stay the same, or go back to default settings, or what?
    Your old Mac is unaffected.

I get stuck on the finding computers part because it doesnt detect the other computer. My pc is connected by an ethernet cable to the router that my macbook is connected to wirelessly. I also noticed that the macbook has no ethernet port to i cant use an ethernet cable with it. Im asking if the migration assiant can work if my pc is connected to the router wired, while the macbook is connected to the same router but wirelessly?

  • Why does the download list keep emptying?

I have set the preference to empty the download list manually. And it used to work fine until a few weeks ago. But now, every time I close Safari, the download list empties and the download button disappears, until the next time I download something
Why is this happening, and what can I do about it? I definitely want the items to remain in the list until I remove them, and I'm sure that I have set the preference correctly.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Why does the keyboard focus keep switching to the menu bar?

Does anyone else have the problem of Photoshop CS6 constantly setting the keyboard focus to the menu bar? This makes it difficult to use shortcuts.
Typical examples: I want to switch to the Move tool, so I press V, but instead, the View menu drops down. Or I press T for the Type tool, but instead, the Filter menu drops down. This happens often and it's very annoying.
This also happens in Premiere Pro CS6, and happens on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 machines. Doesn't happen in other applications, and is not related to actually using a menu, i.e. if I choose something from a menu, then press V, Photoshop will often work correctly and activate the Move tool. This behavior seems to happen randomly.

Alt doesn't really "unhide" the menu bar (speaking of Photoshop), but it's always been the introducer of keyboard operations for "keyboard accessbility" - i.e., operation of Windows applications without mouse.
Alt causes little underlines to show up under the key characters of menu items, and prepares the system for the next character being typed to open a menu - so for example you press something like 'e' and the Edit menu pulls down.  Now you use an arrow key to move to the next item, or maybe a single character that's associated with one of the menu entries.
Photoshop's goals for using modifier keys kind of conflict with this.  They've apparently tried to reach a balance where using the Alt key to modify some operation cancels the introduction of the next menu item.
But I don't think it's possible to be perfect at that, especially for example if the user presses Alt, decides not to do the operation he was thinking about doing (e.g., zooming out), then just releases the key.  Another factor might be the habits people get into for choosing tools.
As a contrast, one person might not press the Alt key until they're sure they're going to do something with it (e.g., zoom out), and that same person might only choose tools from the Tools panel by clicking on them.  Another person might press the Alt key sometimes, but then stop before doing the operation it modifies.  That same person might be in the habit of choosing tools by their letter (e.g., E for eraser).  It's clear to see how the first person might never get into a condition where the menu introducer key (Alt) leaves them in a state where a menu opens inadvertently, while the latter might see it regularly.
As far as why Photoshop might get into a mode where the menu introduction occurs when you HAVEN'T pressed the Alt key, I don't know; I certainly haven't seen that reported much if at all here on the forum.

  • Why does the character size keep changing to extreme small on the home page?

With the new Firefox downloaded the character type changes to extremely small print every time I go away from the home page. I then have to reset it to larger print. With old Firefox the print size remained as I set it all the time.

You didn't restore the device as new before you began using it.  Do so now, and use your own Apple ID & password from now on.
Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content & Settings.
Then, in the Setup Assistant, use only your own information.

  • Why does my MacBook pro keep beeping 3 times. The screen is frozen.

Like my MacBook Pro keeps beeping 3 times and pausing for 2 seconds. The screen is frozen.  How do I fix this and what is going on?

That is  a RAM issue, do you have any spare ram you can swap to confirm?  Possible causes:
    a ram module going bad
    installation of incompatible ram
your ram may have become dislodged
    I would suggest:
    - removing all ram from your MBP, and reinstall it to see if that helps.
    - if you recently installed new ram, remove it, then restart the computer with  the old ram to see if this helps.

  • Why does the Invisible Man keep playing my music?

I have an iPod Touch & the only thing that bugs me with it is that when I finish with it, I pause the music and then turn it off with the switch at the top left
However when I come back later, the music has restarted and been consistently playing whilst I was not aware - and so I am 20 songs further down my playlist & end up with less battery power than expected
The only thing that I can think of for this is that the remote control on the headphones has been triggered, e.g. if the ipod is in my pocket or in a bag & it touches something.
Has anyone else had this problem or am I missing something when turning it off?
I have started disconnecting the headphones when not using it, I will see if this makes a difference
    Many thanks!

ok what I have come up with ... if there is an update available from another store then the iPhone will keep trying to take you to that store but as you are logged in to other store it will not let you connect ... solution which worked for me was to go to the store requiring app update, update the app, change back to "now" store !!!!
    in my case
    1. change store to Canada
    2. update app i.e Google earth
    3. revert to UAE store ...
    Voila !!!!

  • Why does the User Photo Keep Changing

I maintain two (2) users on my iMac. One personal and one business. I have separate Address Book cards for each user with different photos. For my business Address Book card, I only have my business name, phone number and  address. For the personal Address Book card, I have all my email addresses, phone numbers and addresses, including both my business address and phone number.
Since I've updated to Mac OS X 10.7.2, I noticed my user photo for my business user continues to default back to the photo used for my personal Address Book card. I've changed the photos for the business user and for the business Address Book card several times but it continues to default to the photo used in my personal Address Book card.
And just one more thing, how do I remove the Recent Pictures for a user?
    Thanks!

Definitely an iCloud issue, I had this problem too but the Address Book fix mentioned elsewhere didn't work.
In the end, I was updating some contacts on my iPhone whilst my Mac was booted into Windows (so only one device active on iCloud) and noticed the rogue bad image was in my own contact on there too, so I set a random photo as my pic in my phone's Contacts and next time I rebooted OSX, lo and behold there it is on my login screen. So I guess every time it was coming back, it was picking it up from iCloud. Bizarre.
Going by that, I would expect the answer would be log everything out except one device (in my case, an iPhone), update that one, log the rest back in and hopefully it'll pick up the new image from the cloud.
Here's to hoping I'm not now stuck as an accidental screenshot of some random text message
