Why does the radio use so much power?

I have an iPod Nano..forget which generation but it's the small square one, c2011.
Why does using the radio drain the battery so much faster than listening to MP3s does?

Right..ok, then, so what the chip is doing is some kind of automatic gain control..compressor expander type thing? The consumption is so striking..I can probably get 2, maybe 3 days' worth of mp3 play.
lucky if I could get 4 hours' from the radio.
Still can't believe all that little gizmo does in the space of about 1 cubic inch.

  • Why does the JRE use so much memory?

    I know this question has been asked a million times in one form or another but I have not seen a complete answer yet. When I compile and run the following code under WindowsXP pro, it appears that the JRE is using 3.1MB or RAM. When I run a similar program using C++ the program only uses 630k.
    public class HelloWorld
    public static void main(String args[])
    System.out.println("Hello World");
    Why 3MB to show "HelloWorld"? I love Java, it is much easier and more enjoyable to develop with but our applications appear to use large amounts of memory. I realize that making calls to the runtime object to check the amount of "heap" memory we are using will probably show much less memory being used but Task Manager shows 3MB. It is sometimes hard to convince my fellow developers of he benefits of Java when there are strange issues like this.
    Thanks in advance

    Java uses that much memory because every time you start a Java program, even this small, it loads into RAM the whole Java Virtual Machine. Which is itself a very large C++ program - on the order of several hundred thousand lines. Compare that to your C++ HelloWorld program - and you see the reason for a difference...
    So a real question is, is it possible to write a modern Java VM such that it uses space proportional to the size/complexity of the Java program that it executes. Partially that's possible - for example I understand that say native GUI libraries are separate from the main JVM dll, so when you don't use AWT/Swing, you don't waste space with related native code. However, for the core JVM it's probably very difficult to separate parts of functionality such as the interpreter, the dynamic compiler, the runtime system, the garbage collector, the serviceability stuff, etc. They are very interdependent, and thus, probably unless you have this goal from the beginning (and ready to sacrifice some performance/maintainability for it), you can't do that.
    There exist, however, a bunch of other JVMs of all sizes, say those used in mobile phones (or even smart cards!), that consume a lot less memory. They, however, typically implement only a subset of the full Java functionality. On the other hand, the HotSpot VM that comes with Sun's JDK, that you probably use, is a full-fledged JVM that implements everything, can be used for huge server apps, etc. - no wonder its minimum memory consumption is a few megs.

  • On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display, Why does the "USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices" keep coming up after I unplugged the usb device?

    On my MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15", that I purchased a few weeks ago, started coming up with the following message on my desktop:
    "USB Devices Disabled Unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices".
    I unplugged the device and the message still keeps coming up.
    This is what I have done so far to troubleshoot:
    I shut down the laptop. When booting up I pressed the command+option+p+r at the same time. It comes up with a menu to reinstall OSX, Get help online, Run Disk Utility, etc. I choose the disk utility and repair the disk and then restarted.
    The message keeps popping up and I can't seem to get rid of it. Why does the message keep popping up even though I don't have any devices hooked up to the laptop at all? Any help to reenable my usb ports and get rid of the messaage would be helpful.

    I talked to Apple Support and we at least stopped the bleeding, a little bit. These are the troubleshooting steps I did before I contacted Apple Support:
    1. Reinstalled OSX
    2. Restore the last known good Time Machine Backup.
    This did not fix my issue, so I called Apple Support and they told me this:
    1. Turn Power off.
    2. Wait 15 seconds.
    3. Plug in Magsafe adapter.
    4. Wait 15 seconds.
    5. Hold down the Shift+Option+Power Button for 20-30 seconds.
    6. Turn Power back on.
    Ok, this stopped the bleeding a little, but as soon as I plugged in a Apple USB Superdrive
    and a Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter. This "USB Devices Disabled" pop-up pops up like every 30 minutes now. At least, it is not constantly popping up after I close it, so I guess it will do for the temporary. Going to contact Apple support, later, though to see what else can be done.

  • HT4101 My ipad says the device uses too much power when I connect my camera

    I brought my ipad 2 on holidays and have purchased the camera connection kit.  I tried to download my photos and an error message came up saying that the device uses too much power!    My ipad is powered up to 100% and I have closed any open files and it still says the same thing?  Does this actually work or do I have to return it?

    What have you connected to the kit ? The amount of power that is supplied to the kit is limited, and can't be changed - and a lot of card readers and cameras need more power than is supplied to it. If you have connected the kit directly to your camera then does your camera have a setting to enable 'mass storage device' and/or PTP (picture trasnfer protocol or pictbridge) ?

    Hey HoustonSmith, using to much power generally means a short. Do not use this cable, the lighting cables have a history of failure; shorting out. If within one year of purchase date take it to Apple, the cable also has a one year warranty, if short is do to manufacturing flaw and not abuse Apple will replace it free! Otherwise a new cable is around $30. You could also try a reset or restore, but don't think a glitch is your problem. If you do try to restore, just remember to make backup copies of all the info / data on this iPod to your computer first, then attempt to restore. Good luck. Cheers.

    iPad min cannot be changred, it shows
    unplug the device using too much power to re-enable USB devices

    Try unplugging it. Give your iPad a reset by holding down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds (until it reboots) then try again.

  • I made an extra backup on a USB device and now I can't get it back because "the device uses too much power". Why didn't it a few weeks ago and how can I use the device anyway?

    because "it uses too much power"
    I did'nt get that message a few weeks ago when I used Snow Leopard and now I can't approach the files I saved on the external disk.
    Question 1: How do I solve the problem? (Without going back to Snow Leopard)
    Q2: Why this parential supervision by Apple?

    Get a powered hub
    USB is cranky, you're not the first (probably not the last) to have this happen.

  • To upload photos from my pc onto my ipad using a usb stick. I bought a camera connector kit and tried placing the usb stick onto one of the white square adaptors, stuck it into the ipad2 and I got 'the device uses too much power'' message. Pls help.

    I am not very familiar with the ipad2. I wished to transfer some photos from my pc (not an apple pc but that is the only one I have) to my ipad2 as I thought it would be easier to cull them, edit, crop etc to create albums for our recent trip (the photos are already on the pc and no longer on the camera memory card). When I place the usb stick on the adaptor and stick it onto the Ipad2 I keep getting 'device uses too much power/ requires too much power' message. I read somewhere on the internet that a usb hub could be used to solve the issue but that did not work either. What am I doing wrong? Is there actually a way around this problem. If not why does apple sell this product for Ipad users at all?
    Thank you for any help/ solution you can offer.
    Regards

    I'd ask that on the iPad forum.

    You can't directly from a Galaxy phone.  But you can certainly upload the pictures from your Galaxy phone to your computer and then sync them to your iPad via iTunes.

  • WHY does the radio function rely on a wired headse...

    I know this is a feature common to many phones but I'm sick and %&&(%&% tired of it, and just don't understand why.
    Picking up my Lumia 900 a couple of days ago it simply annoys me that the radio function cannot operate when connected to a BT headset.
    I had a 'tansistor radio' 40yrs ago that did not require an external antenna.
    The internal antennae of such devices are good for WIFI, BT, 3/4G. Just WHY THE HEY can they not be used for FM radio?

    Hi SuperGumby,
    Thanks for posting and welcome to the forum,
    You can use the radio without wired headset. You can find this and much more information here (specifically here);
    To switch between speaker and headset modes
    While playing a station, press and hold the station number.
    Press Switch to speaker or Switch to headset to switch between the two options.
    Hope this helps,
    Kosh

  • Why does the flash video have much higher contrast when the window is maximized?

    When using Mozilla Firefox, any flash videos like those on youtube, when maximized, shows much higher contrast. The video becomes so dark that it is pretty difficult to view it. When zoomed out, everything looks normal.
    The work around I ended up using, was to maximize the window using ctrl++ option without using the "fullscreen" button. It is a hassle, but it works. Does anyone know why this happens?
    I use Mozilla FF 19.0.2. Btw, this doesn't happen on Chrome or IE.
