Why does time machine backup disk images?

I have Time Machine backing up my folders on my Time Capsule but when I look at the Time Capsule drive in the Finder it shows one Sparse Disk Image Bundle. If I lose a folder on my iMac, how can I easily get the folder off of the Time Capsule? Is there a reason Time Machine and Time Capsule is making this Disk Image and not simply dumping folders on there?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you lose a folder, you just have to open Finder, go to the folder where that folder was and open the Time Machine application, so you will be able to navigate through your backups and restore the folder > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Time Machine always create sparsebundle disk images when you are backing up to a network drive

  • TS1337 Time machine backup disk image can not be accessed

    Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me as I'm constantly getting the following message:
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/My name Time Capsu/My name's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1)
Does anyone know what this means as I can't find anything regarding this message in troubleshooting?  My time machine has been running perfectly for well over a year until a couple of days ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I had this same problem. Unplugged the power for a minute and plugged back in after reading this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4984048
    Working for me now.

  • Time Machine - "backup disk image could not be created"

I have been successfully using the Time Machine to backup my Macbook Pro to an HP Network Server for about six months.  A month ago the the Time Machine setup became corrupted and no backups were conducted until yesterday when I found a solution to Time Machine setup problem. Once I set the Time Machine up again, a backup was unsuccessfully attempted with an error message: "backup disk image could not be created" being generated.  I followed several other posts on this issue and confirmed my computer is correctly named in the file sharing setup. Since I am not using a Time Capsule - that other suggestions in that post possibly may not apply.  The file image showing all of the previous Time Machine backups is present and accessible on my desktop.  The NAS is functioning properly.  Any help is appreciated.

That sounds like it's trying to create a new sparse bundle for a new set of backups, but can't for some reason.
It's possible that your backups are corrupted; see if you can repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If that doesn't help, try re-selecting them in Time Machine Preferences.  If still no help, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in the same link.
If still no help, you may need to reset the NAS, or use it's instructions again to "reconnect" to the backups.  Unfortunately, that's different for each NAS, so you may have to work with the maker on that.

  • Time Machine Backups disk image displays the wrong capacity

I have a USB hard drive partitioned and connected as an airdisk on a time capsule. The drive "TIME" is partitioned for 300 GB and serves both my MacBook (MB) and MacBook Pro (MBP).
If I connect to TIME from Finder, it shows 155.68 GB free of 300 GB total.
When MB runs Time Machine, the Time Machine Backups volume mounts and shows 155.68 GB free of 300 GB total.
Here is what is weird - When MBP runs Time Machine, the Time Machine Backups volume mounts and shows 155.68 GB free of 429.5 GB total.
Why does the MBP show a different and inaccurate total?
I tried reconfiguring Time Machine to point to a different backup drive and then back to TIME hoping it would just 'reset' but that did not work.
Something I just thought of - I did move that sparse from a different volume that was larger. I bet the total size is saved in the information in the sparse.
    Can anyone confirm this?
Will this cause me any problems in the long run?

That's possible, depending on how you moved the sparse bundle. If it had a smaller maximum size than the volume it's on, Time Machine would automatically resize it to the size of the volume it's on, making it larger (effective with 10.6.3).
I don't know if it will make a larger one smaller, though.
Will this cause me any problems in the long run?
No. Time Machine will figure out how much space there really is anyway. But if you want to change the size, see #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time machine backup disk image

I am just starting to use my Time Capsule and I keep getting this message when I try to do my first backup: "backup disk image could not be mounted". How can I fix it?

Run AirPort Utility, go to Disk, and then choose Erase. Then start over and try to backup again. I'd recommend using an ethernet cable for your first backup.

  • HT3275 Why does Time Machine backup fail when an external drive is included in backup?

Time Machine will not perform a backup when I have an external drive (formatted Mac OS Extended - Journaled) included in the backup. My understanding is that it should. What am I doing wrong?

Ah, not one of Apple's more informative messages.
There's a problem with a file on that disk.  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it.

  • Why does time machine backup seems to freeze iMac

Have just attached external hard drive to my new iMac - backup appears to have worked (although no confirmation). However, when clicking on icon in desktop, time machine is entered then freezes. Only way to get out is by disconnecting the hard drive from the USB port. Additionally, even if I'm not in Time Machine, but with the hard disk connected, I appear to be unable to turn the iMac off.
What am I doing wrong - have I not left things long enough to backup?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds to me your hard drive doesn't have the appropriate firmware to be compatible with your version of Mac OS X. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
Fortunately you can take the hard drive out and put it inside another case that does work. You can purchase these cases from http://www.macsales.com/ even in the UK.

  • Why is Time Machine backup disk not available?

After being away for 6 week on vacation with the iMac turned off, but the Time Capsule left on, all backups have been "delayed" and a forced backup-now yields the following message:
Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “XXX-Time-Capsule”.
    OSX 10.8.4
I've tried to re-select with password using the TiemCapsule utility
    Any suggesttions?

Open Time Machine Preferences>click "Select Disk">click on the appropriate TM disk under the bottom window titled "Available Disks." Force a backup and see if it works. If this doesn't fix it reboot your iMac and/or Time Capsule and try forcing a backup again once the iMac and/or TC have fully booted up.

  • Why does time machine backup fail, error type -1

We have two Macbooks (2009 and 2010) running 10.6.8. My wife's computer came loaded with 10.5 and was upgraded to 10.6 while my mine came with 10.6 installed. Two months ago our time machine stopped doing backups of my wife's internal 120G(approx) hd while continuing to backup my 250G internal hd. My wife's hd was almost full so I thought that might be the problem. I replaced the hd with a much larger one but it still fails to make new backups. I was able to access the time machine to migrate information to the new hd. The time machine tries to backup but always fail to complete the backup due to a type -1 error. During the migration process I did not migrate applications in case the time mach app was corrupted. Both Macbooks are running time machine version 1.1.

The time machine tries to backup but always fail to complete the backup due to a type -1 error.
There are various things that can cause this error, so there are various solutions.
For some possible solutions, see #C17 in Time Machine guru Pondini's Time Machine -- Troubleshooting.

  • Why does time machine say my wireless hard drive doesn't have enough space when it clearly does?

I have a 2 TB western digital hard drive connected via USB to my airport extreme (Y2012) that i've been using the past 2 years to connect to wirelessly. The hard drive has 2 partitions, ~1 TB each. 1 partition for backing up, the other for storing media. Recently I deleted my macbook pro backup. My macbook pro has a 500GB hard drive, of which about 120 GB is free.
Since I deleted the old time machine backup disk image and told time machine to start a new backup, I am now receiving an error. It's telling me there isn't enough room on the drive, when the 1TB partition i'm trying to use (as i've sucessfully done in the past) has nothing on it. 1 full TB free, and my macbook pro can't backup a 500 GB hard drive, which isn't even full itself.
PLEASE HELP!! I have a macbook pro early 2011, and I never know when the board is going to go koput again and I don't currently have a backup of my stuff while this problem persists.
    Thanks!

  • Does Time Machine backup items on the time machine disk?

If I designate disk B as my Time Machine disk, are items on disk B, that aren't part of what Time Machine puts there, backed up?  In other words, can I use a disk for both storage and Time Machine backups and have those stored items backed up too?

If you intend to use disk B as both a Time Machine Backup Disk and a Data disk to hold your files, the only way to do that would be to partion the Disk B volume.
How do I partition an external hard drive ?
When an external is connected to a mac, the computer sees that Hard Drive as a Volume. Paritioning the volume is the ability to "Split" the volume in more parts that are limited by size. Time Machine will use the entire partition of a volume if the whole volume is used as a single partition. If you use the right tools and "Split" the external hard drive in smaller logical volumes then you can comfortably use the external hard drive for both your Time Machine Backups and your Data that you want to carry on an external drive.
The easiest way to partition a volume in more the one partition or logical volumes is to use the Disk Utility application that comes with every mac. Use the Finder to go to your Utilities folder and open Disk Utility, or search for it in Spotlight.  Whit Disk Utility you can select your external Hard Drive and either change the partition to add a second one or erase all data on the existing external hard drive and create 2 Partitions that you can adjust in size. Remember Make sure you understand that if you choose to erase the existing external drive to make room for a new partition , that all data present on the external drive will be deleted.
Now that you have your two new partitions you can assign one to Time Machine and use the second one for Data. And with Time Machine Options you will be able to exclude or include your new external data partition to backup to your new Time Machine Backup Partition !

  • How do I manually erase my Time Machine backup disk?

I have a 500GB external hard drive with only 43 GB left after years of serving as a Time Machine backup disk for another computer. I wanted to use the same disk for my new computer. The new computer's backup is 130 GB, and when I connected the old external drive, Time Machine said "The backup disk needs to be 130.37 GB for the backup but only 47.24 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files." So I manually deleted the files I found on the external drive onto my computer's trash.
Big mistake. Apparently, there are still only 47.24 GB on the external, but there are no apparent backups or files on it. Furthermore, I can't restore the deleted files to the external hard drive because there isn't enough space on it. Too late, I did some searching and discovered that you can't delete files from a Time Machine external drive manually; you can only go through the gear icon in Finder and remove backups in that way.
So why does my external drive say that it has only 47 GB out of 500 even when there is nothing on it? Is there any other way to manually erase/reformat it?

Try opening Disk Utility and select the highest level drive name on the external drive. Click on the Partitions tab. Remove all the partitions on the drive by selecting each and clicking the "-" sign in the lower left corner of the partition table view. Then choose 1 Partition from the dropdown of partitions to create. Make sure the format shows Mac OS Extended-Journaled. Click Apply.
The above should delete everything on the drive and create a new single formated partition.

  • How do I get back iphone app information from a DELETED Time Machine Backup disk

    Hi People,
    here is what happened:
I have been using an iPhone App (Audio Memos Free - The Voice Recorder) to record song ideas (I am a songwriter). I have been using it for years.
I backed up my iphone to itunes, and backed up my mac on Time Machine. After a month or so I did a fresh OSX install on my mac, copied all of my files back from Time Machine into my mac, and tried to set up Time Machine. I was not able to do so, so I had to format the Time Machine Backup disk and doing a "fresh" mac Time Machine Backup.
After a week or so, my iphone asks me something like "you do not possess the rights for one or more applications". do not know what i did, but after 1 minute my iPhone was wiped out of all my apps and app contents. I had also the icloud app sync, so i did not worry, recovered from icloud notes, contacts, and all other things. so i did another backup to itunes.
Now i discover icloud did not recover or save the "Audio Memos Free" app content. I know the data are hidden into the Time machine Backup HD, but i do not know where to search for the itunes backup in it.
I know it is in library, but library won't show up.
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS there is a chance that, even without a data recovery, my latest itunes backup was containing these songs, but i do not know how to fish that out of the Time machine drive.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Migration Assistant won't see my Time machine backup disk

    Hi,
I've seen some other discussions but they apply to slightly different situations and turn out to be too complex for me to follow.  My situation is this.  My Dec 2008 Macbook running Lion just died.  Not sure what the problem is but it seems to be the hardrive.  It will take me a while to get it fixed and in the meantime I have a farly new mac mini running Lion.
I also have been making Time Machine backups to an external drive.  I read that I could migrate content from a time machine backup and I connected the backup to my mac mini and launched Migration Assistan (MA), seleted the option to migrate from a Time Machine backup.  MA is stuck trying to find my disk even though it shows up in Finder.  This is the screen I'm talking about http://screencast.com/t/AC0OiVzxx
I'm hoping there is the equivalent of a little on/off switch that I'm not seeing and you can direct me too.
How can I get MA to see my Time Machine backup disk?  Thanks for your help.

sorry, i don't know what else it could be then. if you have another external drive you can try doing a full system restore from the TM backups onto that drive and see if MA will recognize that drive and migrate from it. other than this there is always manual migration. slow and tedious but it can be done. see this link for help with that
