Why does turning on/off a light (in same outlet) wake up my G5?

Annoying, you bet. I put the G5 to sleep and go to leave the office and turn off the light (that's plugged into the same wall outlet as the G5 and peripherals. The G5 wakes whenever I turn on/off this light. Then I have to turn on the screen, login, put the Mac the sleep, etc. Ugh!
Anyway to fix this besides moving the light?

turn off the light (that's plugged into the same wall outlet as the G5 and peripherals.
Some lamps do cause interference. Use an extension if you don't want to move it but it seems replacing the lamp might be ideal AND get yourself a UPS that can handle your equipment, APS RS1000VA or above (G5 Quad takes 1500VA which is what a Mac Pro would also).
I have a lamp that is running off UPS (in case of storm or flicker so I still have light) that causes the TV (on its own wall outlet and on a SEPARATE circuit!) the TV will 'flash' when the lamp goes on/off (and uses one of those 23W compact florescent bulbs).
So even a UPS won't always help the lamp and G5 interference. And with so many power adapters, plugs, bricks, rechargers and electrical noise....

Think you will have to check BIOS settings. Look for an option called Illumination LED and enable it.
If it is already, then you will have to install all needed drivers and tools from Toshiba download page, but this feature should be enabled by default. Have you reinstalled your system or downgraded to XP?

  • Why does the back arrow just reload the same page most of the time

why does the back arrow just reload the same page most of the time
    == This happened ==
    Not sure how often
== most of the time since I installed it

    Hi Keith.
This is probably a normal behavior that's induced by the way pages are done. Can you provide a link to a page where this happens?
For example, wikipedia articles often have links that lead to sections of the article and not to actually different pages, as you may know. If you click the Back button, Firefox will lead you to the section of the page you were looking at when you clicked that link. Is this perhaps what you're talking about?
AJAX pages (i.e. pages that take advantage of heavy duty javascript code and server side technologies) often have troubles like these. It's very hard to prevent this from happening from the browsers' point of view, but Mozilla is trying to find a way for Firefox 4 (at least like time I checked they were). So using the back and forth buttons in gmail will probably be troublesome.

  • Why does turning on FileVault result in an unbearably slow login?

    Hello
I work with sensitive information and so the ability to encrypt my home directory made FileVault seem like a good idea.
Unfortunately, once I've turned it on, and when I've logged in, I find that it takes /ages/ (~30 minutes) before the Dock appears. And even at that point everything continues to work really slowly. Additionally, a number of items don't appear at the top-right (to the left of Spotlight), and even though I can bring up the shut down dialog it doesn't seem to respond to my instruction to shut down.
After reading various forums I've tried numerous things to solve it (all to no avail):
    - Resetting the PRAM and NVRAM
    - Moving the contents of ~/Library/Caches and ~Library/Preferences out of my home directory
I've tried turning on FileVault on my account three times now, and each time encountered the same problems, and ended up logging in in safe mode and turning it off.
Creating a new user account with FileVault turned on works fine.
Does anyone know what's likely to be the cause of this?
And does anyone know how I can best solve it? For example, what issues might there be with doing the following...
    1. Running "$ sudo cp -PRp ~ /Users/Shared/home-dir-backup"
    2. Creating a temporary administrator account
    3. Logging in to the temporary account and deleting my old account
    4. Creating a new account with the same name as the old one but /with FileVault turned on/
    5. Logging in to the new account and running "$ sudo cp -PRp /Users/Shared/home-dir-backup ~"
Many thanks for any thoughts you might have.

Sure sounds like it. Best thing to do is to boot into that new admin account, delete the problematic one, saving its data (put into a dmg file within /Users/Deleted Users/), recreate the account, using the same username/password combo, log into it, mount the dmg file, and slowly transfer stuff from it to the recreated account, log out of it, reenable FileVault, disable FV, etc. until you resolve what's causing the behavior. Note that this is a tedious procedure, but if you really need to protect that data w/FV, then you'll have to bite the bullet and do it. Alternatively, you could just create an encrypted dmg and use it to store the data. You don't have to encrypt most of the stuff inside your home folder.
Thanks for this response. I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

  • Why does ipad cut off left side of page?

What do you do to see left side of page which is cut off?

If you have Zoom enabled, that could cut off the left side of the screen, but everything would appear very large on the screen as well.
Settings>General>Accessibility>Zoom>On. You want to turn it off. Double tap three fingers and drag to change Zoom. You can see the instructions below.
If that's not the problem - try rebooting the iPad.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Why does negation of Integer.MIN_VALUE display the same value ?

    Hi Guys,
    This is my code :

O/P : -2147483648 -2147483648Now,my question is why does b which is actually negation of the value of a,again print -2147483648 ?
    Thank you for your consideration.

Since negative -2,147,483,648 equals 2,147,483,648 which is one value over the maximum, it ticks over to -2,147,483,648 again.

  • Why does it take so long to reboot and never wakes up? PMG4

After our last storm (the electricity went out without shutting down), It now takes more than 10min for my Power Mac G4 OSX 10.5.7 to boot up on turn on. Reboot is the same. When i put her to sleep, she never wakes up. I have to shut down and WAIT. Is there a know fix for this?
    Thank you

Hi H-Town_McFly, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Why does turning off auto updates turn them on?

I have been trying to stop the auto update of Flash player for months - even went so far as to totally uninstall, remove all traces, then install fresh with the "do not auto update" setting. It still gives me pop-ups. Browsing the 'net I saw an article that made me think it might be related to Shockwave. Shockwave has NEVER asked me to update but, silly me, I unchecked it anyway.
And now it is on and attempting to auto update.
So, I'm left with two products that will not obey their settings.
    Please advise.

    i MonH,
Unless someone deleted the file, it should exist on your system.  If you're on a 32-bit OS, the file will be in C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash.  If you're on a 64-bit OS, the file will be in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash.  You can edit the file manually, or edit the update settings in the Flash Player Settings Manager, which may be easier.
To launch the Settings Manager, either navigate to the Control Panel and select the Flash Player icon, or launch a non-Chrome browser and view Flash content, then right-click on the content to display the Flash Player context menu.  Select Global Settings.
When the Settings Manager displays, navigate to the Advanced tab.
Click the Change Update Settings button
Select the Never check for updates (not recommended) radio button
Your update option has been set
Viewing the mms.cfg file after making the updates, it should contain the following:
         AutoUpdateDisable=1
         SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0
AutoUpdateDisable=1 is what disables the updates (background and notification) completely.
Note that whenever you uninstall Flash Player the update settings are reset to the default setting (AutoUpdateDisable=0).  You'll need to be sure to select Never check for updates (not recommended) when you install Flash Player again.

  • Why does it flash a orange light

The light on my time machine is usually a constant green, occasionally it flashes an orange light. What does this orange light mean and how do i fix it?

To find out what the amber light is flashing.....
    On your Mac....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Click Manual Setup
Click directly on the word Status (2nd line on the summary page) and a window will open to explain why the Time Capsule is complaining....along with suggested remedies.
If everything seems to be working OK on your network, the flashing light might be a notification that an update is availalbe for your Time Capsule.
Now you know what to do the next time this happens

  • Does turning bluetooth off give you a lot more battery life?

for the macbook air 13" 2011 version.
    Thanks

WiFi is going to be a much larger consumer of battery power. My machine has Bluetooth on constantly (and only about 40% of the time with a peripheral attached). I still routinely get 5+ hours of normal use off a full charge. It's been a while since I ran usability tests but back in '08 I remember doing usability tests (wired v. wireless, etc.) and the difference with Bluetooth was a difference of about 10-15 minutes over 5+ hours of usage.

Take your iPod Nano to your local Apple Store or AASP.
Every iPod comes with complimentary, single-incident telephone technical support within 90 days of your iPod purchase.   If you also purchased AppleCare, then your warranty is extended for technical support and hardware coverage for two years from the original purchase date of your iPod.

  • Why does the Illustrator "trap" command trap the same spot colors in opposite ways?

I can not understand how Illustrator decides which way to expand something when using the "trap" command. According to their tutorial it expands the lighter-colored artwork over the darker artwork, unless you choose to reverse traps. But in practise, where two objects of the same color meet, it will frequenrly trap them in one direction in one place and the opposite direction in the other.
Here's an example with especially large traps:
The two yellow items are defined as the same spot color and are a single compound path. There is just the one simple shape of spot red and one simple shape of spot pink.
On the left yellow object, it expands yellow over pink. On the right, it expands pink over yellow. On the left yellow object, it expands red over yellow. On the right, it expands yellow over red.
There is no possible print order of these three spot colors that would result in the correct object shapes being printed the way this is trapped. Is this just a bug? Can anyone explain this result, or especially how to make it work in a useable way?
All objects are spot colors that are cut out from each other so there were no overlaps.

Here's what it looks like with overprint preview:
    It still looks wrong.
This view is glossing over how bad it would really look with screen printing, because the inks are much higher opacity than they're previewing here. I suppose that's what you're getting at, that the trapping may be bad for screen printing, but if you're assuming offset press inks that have next to no opacity and will mix together on press, that it doesn't matter which way you trap. Overprint preview makes yellow overprinting pink look the same as pink overprinting yellow. With spot colors in screen printing, that is no where near the case.
But even consdiering that, this trapping is wrong, the final shapes of the objects are changed by the trapping. And the trapping does not appear to follow Adobe's own description of the logic used, or any kind of consistency. Why would it expand yellow into pink in some places and pink into yellow in others?
I've heard the trapping in Indesign is much better, some screen printers open in Indesign to add trapping... maybe I'll look at that.
