Why does weekely maintenance run twice?
re; Intel Mini, Tiger 10.4
Can anyone figure out why my weekly maint. which is run once a week ( that's correct) BUT the steps are done twice? Very weird. Could it have something to do with having Parallels and WinXP installed? It has been doing this for a long time now but I never paid attention. Here is last weekly run from weekly.out log:

Hmmm. Note the "applesaved" script. I didn't read them command by command, but they look exactly alike.
Maybe launchd runs EVERYTHING in the /private/etc/periodic/daily/ ? Does that make sense? Perhaps if I removed the "applesaved" I'd only get one run? That's what the thread referenced above seems to imply. However, I'm not one to mess much with the system internals of Apple's software.

Why does Plugin Container run twice or rev and hang things up?
For almost 6 months I've had nothing but problems with Firefox's plug-in container. Almost every time I try to play a game (especially on Facebook) everything starts hanging, my computer starts revving, and when I go to Windows task mgr there are TWO instances of PIC running! I have to either end them or manually end FF. Maybe a coincidence, but it seems to coincide, at times, with unresponsive scripts. I've had a close fried of mine (a very skilled and experienced tech) working on it, but can't seem to get @ the root of the problem. I can't find a solution here or anywhere else, and am starting to consider offering a reward to the person who fixes it. It's a '''ROYAL''' pain!

I have a new computer, a Mac Book Pro with 16 GB ram, so I have plenty of ram.You really have to keep your brush size small with the Mixer Brush tool. And that necessitates keeping your canvas failry small as well.
Back a few years ago I did a whole painting with the Mixer Brush once and some of the bristle brushes - just to see if I could - and I found I had to really limit the brush size (e.g., to 50 to 75) in order to get enough responsiveness to keep painting. In that case my canvas was 4096 x 5120. It's not impossible to get a good, professional result, but you have to be careful about sizing things right.

Why does Photoshop CC run so slowly on my computer?
I just downloaded it and am running it on brand new HP laptop with good specs and nothing else running. It takes 5-10 minutes to run a single action or resize an image. There is no way I can keep up with my work flow at this rate. My Macbook pro is currently being repaired which is why I downloaded it on to my HP. What can I do to help this situation?

- what is the CPU name and the how much RAM do you have in the laptop ?
- what size of images are you trying to manipulate ?
- does other software run slow on this machine as well or Photoshop only ?
- do you use an internal or external drive to store the photos ? If external, what kind of connection - USB 2 or 3 ? -

Some general troubleshooting steps in order:
Terminate the Safari Application and restart it. Click the Home button to return to App screen. Double click Home to bring up the App tray. Touch and hold the Safari icon until “-” appears. Touch the “-” to terminate Safari. Terminate all other Apps listed as well. Then restart Safari.
Use Settings > Safari > Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data
Restart iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off the device. To turn it back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Reset iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off".
Restore iPad: Connect to iTunes on a PC/Mac and do a restore. -
I am trying to build a stand-alone application on a target pc for which I have built a LabVIEW server that TestStand can use as an adapter.
In order to do this, I searched this site and found the topic: "How do I build and Use the LabVIEW Operator Interface as a LabVIEW ActiveX Run-time server?" After following the procedure to the letter, I ran the testexec.exe file as instructed and loaded my sequence file. As soon as I try to "Single Pass" or "Test UUT" I get an error which says "source does not existLast UI message: Start Execution". This error appears when running the testexec.exe file on the target pc or the development pc.
I have found though, th
at if I open the Operator interface through the Start: Programs>National Instruments>TestStand>Operator Interfaces>LabVIEW then the sequence file runs without these errors.

The KB you mentioned explaines how to build the LV Operator Interface (OI). So, I assumed you built the LV OI and also configured the LV adapter to use the TestStandGUILVRTS server without problems.
The error you are getting may be due to missing VIs. In other words, the LabVIEW OI may not be finding all the VIs your sequence is calling.
In order to deploy sequences that call VIs, you need to first run Tools >> Assemble VIs for Runtime Distribution. This tool gets all the VIs your sequence needs and saves in a separate directory.
For more information, you may check the TestStand User Manual chapter 17, it describes how to distribute TestStand and sequences.

I've been having a problem with FireFox on any machine/OS I use it on ever since v3.3. When it crashes, it will remain running in the task manager eating full resources which is often in excess of 1gb memory consumed. When I close the browser manually, it will remain running in the task manager, also eating full resources, about 90% of the time. This happens on at least 4 different computers I use on a weekly basis and it's extremely frustrating. I'm no computer expert, but what in the world could it be doing in the background when I have closed it that required over a gig of memory? Is this a normal problem? Is FireFox using people's computers/bandwidth for some sort of Grid computing project without the users being made aware of it? I love FireFox, but I'm no longer recommending it to anyone until this issue is resolved. I've spoken to several other people who've noticed the same thing, so this is not an isolated problem.
Other things that need your attention:

Why does the ProTranscoderTool_sb run amok?
Every time I open iMovie, when iMovie loads, after a few seconds the fan comes on, and I know something is not right. With the Activity monitor I discovered that the ProTranscoderTool_sb uses up anywhere from 110 to 166 % (!!!) of the CPU capacity.
My questions are:
1. What does the ProTranscoderTool_sb do?
2. Why is it in overdrive all the time?
3. How can I stop it from doing this?

KlausIt is creating ProRes versions of your clips in the background. If you have recently imported a lot of clips or updated a lot of projects from iMovie 9 there will be a large backlog of transcoding to do. Best to let it run while you are away from your computer for a few hours.

Why does my Kernal_Task run so high when I first start up the computer
Okay...I recently found out that my macbook pro 13in late 2011, main problem is my Kernal_Task......I notice it started happening this past Saturday. Everytime I put it to sleep, my CPU kernal_task runs high of 204-396% which is not normal. Then my fans kick on afterward.....it does the same thing when I properly shut down the computer and start it back up again, with nothing running or open. I did the Disk Utilty of Repair Disk Premissions, and still it is an on going issue with the kernal_task. And before all this happened, I never had a problem of putting my macbook to sleep at night, and wake it up the next day. Sometimes, I don't shutdown until 3 or 4 weeks at time....but now, since my kernal_task is acting up, I was told I now have to shut it down when I am not using it, like a PC machine. Can anyone here give me suggestions to sovle the kernal_task problem, of having it go back to normal use at 2-5% of CPU use, instead of 204-396% of CPU use....I am hitting a wall and want to find out if I have to reinstall OS X Lion or not...
Thanks...The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below is a partial list of causes for this condition.
Throttling
When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to
a buildup of dust on the logic board
high ambient temperature
a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
the malfunction of a cooling fan or sensor
Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.
If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a bad fan or sensor.
Installed software
User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or booting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or booting in safe mode may not be as easy as you think it is.
Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data
Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.
Peripherals
Connecting an external display to some MacBook Pro models via Thunderbolt may cause this issue. I don't know of a fix, other than to disconnect the display.
Encryption
Transferring large amounts of data to or from an encrypted disk image or FileVault volume may put an extra load on the kernel. If both the source and the destination are encrypted, the load may be doubled. If you transfer data from an encrypted disk image on an encrypted partition to another such image on another encrypted partition, the load may be quadrupled.
This issue probably doesn't affect late-model Macs with an Intel i-series, recent Xeon, or later processor. Those processors support hardware-accelerated encryption. You can determine what kind of processor you have by selecting About This Mac from the Apple menu in the menu bar.
