Why does Yosemite keep freezing?

I have a MacBook Pro, 2012 I believe. For the most part, it's been one of the best computers I've owned so far, running smoothly with few glitches or errors. Then I updated to Yosemite.
Now, I'm lucky if a job that took a few seconds on the previous system takes less than five minutes on the new one. The system lags and hangs pretty much every other action. It has to 'think' about everything, but especially typing. While writing this, the system paused for over fifteen seconds, unable to do anything, before continuing with typing out my sentence. Here's a little bit of what keeps going wrong:
1.) While typing in Microsoft Word, the system will continually and consistently freeze, often in the middle of a word I was tying, sometimes for upwards of a minute. May or may not complete the word or phrase I was typing when freeze occurred (literally just happened while typing this sentence; so Firefox is buggy too) Saving and opening files also takes an inordinate amount of time.
2.) Using iTunes or 3rd Party software for music and/or videos is pretty much impossible. Audio will repeatedly pause and glitch for upwards of thirty seconds before resuming, or just cut out entirely. Video doesn't fare much better, however video will sometimes freeze while audio continues on for a few seconds before freezing as well. Other times video and audio will pause at once and then resume. Problem is also present (but less pronounced) for YouTube videos.
3.) Accessing files takes upwards of a minute (depending on size and location) and will necessitate no other activity on other programs in the meantime (system will lock up temporarily and then resume as file opens).
4.) System will often stop and lock up even when I'm not doing anything; evidenced by the spinning 'busy' icon appearing and the system not responding when prompted.
5.) System seems to have a problem with scrolling through menus or websites as well.
6.) Possibly the cause of -or related to- these problems: Filevault will not stop its encryption process. I left the system running on cord power (modifying the appropriate energy-saving settings so the computer wouldn't go to sleep automatically) for upwards of 24 hours with no programs running, and the progress bar hasn't moved. (Occasionally it'll jump to full and then return to half-full)
I love my computer, but this new OS has made me pull my hair out and want to bash my head into the wall, repeatedly. I have no idea how to fix this, or how I would implement a solution, if any. My only thought is that I should re-download and install the previous OS, but it'd be a tremendous hassle and I'm worried about compatibility issues with some of the newer files. Could someone please explain why this keeps happening and walk me through a solution? Bear in mind that I am the DEFINITION of 'Stupid end-user'. I know nothing about how computers or coding works, and I'm just trying to get mine fixed.

  • WHY DOES PHOTOSHOP KEEP FREEZING?

i have photoshop cs5.1 and everytime i try to close a project it freezes and i have to force quit. i have  a 2010 macpro, but most importantly when i open a new project it doesnt allow me to type anything, i hit the text tool and a small dot comes on the screen and i cant write anything, help me please. oh and why does it keep saying rendering type everytime i hit a button in the tool side?

    Have you tried resetting preferences?
Have you tried disabling all third party plugins?
Can you use Sampler or the Activity Monitor to get sample of what Photoshop is doing when it appears frozen?
(my guess is that you have a corrupt font, and it's hitting a bug in the OS font engine, which causes other problems)

  • Why does itunes keep freezing?

While importing CD's to itunes with windows 8, it keeps freezing up and I have to end itunes through the task manager and restart.  Any suggestions?

There is an Apple article on troubleshooting freezes here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302856
However it could be a bit of a pain to do if your problem is intermittent.
If the problem is system wide (see article) trying MSConfig to look for conflicting processes might help. I used to get a lot of several second hangs with norton 2005 which went away when I installed norton 2007 for example.

  • Why does Firefox keep freezing/locking up system (Windows 8)?

I just recently decided to switch to Firefox from chrome because I was sick of chrome's adblocker never working. Unfortunately, whenever I use Firefox, it will randomly freeze my entire system so I have to do a forced shutdown by holding the power button. When it freezes I can't even move my mouse let alone open task manager to end Firefox. Any help is greatly appreciated because I really like Firefox but it is annoying having to keep restarting my computer every 20 minutes or so. I notice that usually freezes when watching videos on YouTube, although not always. I am using Firefox 30.0 with Windows 8
    System specs:
    Dell Inspiron 15r Special Edition
    Intel Core i7 processor
    Windows 8 x64
    8GB RAM
    750GB Hard drive
    2GB AMD 7730M

Something similar happened to me at one point, and I found out that one of my RAM chips had gone bad. The way I found out was from scanning with Memtest86. Its an ISO file that you print onto a CD, then the computer will boot from it. After replacing the chip it has been running smoothly ever since.

  • I have firefox 6.02. Why does it keep freezing on me lately for the last week or so?

Every few seconds, the firefox just freezes & I need to wait a few minutes & I can't do anything else with firefox until it cleares! WHY?

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Why does Itunes keep freezing up and stop working?

It is kind of getting old but my Itunes player (does not matter which one as I update to the latest version) has this nasty habit of freezing whether I am trying to listen to the radio or my own library.
It is now happening almost every time I use Itunes and when it freezes the only fix is to do the old Control-Alt-Delete.
I am running a 64 bit Window's 7 home premium and prefer using Itunes but you know if you does not work get something else
I have 4 GBs Ram with a 2.6 Dual Core Pentium

Just out of curiosity when you say iTunes sent you here, do you mean that there was a link to here in the iTunes application, or that someone from Apple sent you here?
There are lots of posts from general iTunes users on this forum so I'm curious to know if/how people are being misdirected.
    Thanks

  • Why does InDesign keep freezing?

InDesign is being impossible. I can't place a simple logo in an eBook because the program freezes. I am using CS6 on a Mac which is running Mavericks. My guess is that fonts are the culprit. This is what Console shows during the freez ups:
12/10/13 3:12:22.351 PM Adobe InDesign CS6[1727]: CoreText performance note: Client called CTFontCreateWithName() using name "Times Roman" and got font with PostScript name "Times-Roman". For best performance, only use PostScript names when calling this API.
12/10/13 3:12:22.351 PM Adobe InDesign CS6[1727]: CoreText performance note: Set a breakpoint on CTFontLogSuboptimalRequest to debug.
12/10/13 3:12:22.357 PM Adobe InDesign CS6[1727]: CoreText performance note: Client called CTFontCreateWithName() using name "Arial" and got font with PostScript name "ArialMT". For best performance, only use PostScript names when calling this API.
Console suggests that I "only use PostScript names when calling this API." What does that mean and how do I execute?

Am not sure from your post what you've tried to narrow down / fix the issue. But here are a few things to try:
Are you running any third party font management plug-ins in InDesign? -- uninstall/disable these
Does it only happen on jobs that use one particular font? -- reinstall the font
    Delete InDesign preferences.
    Try clearing the font-caches -- http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/troubleshoot-fonts-mac-os-x.html
Does it only crash on one particular job? -- try saving as .idml and then reopening the .idml file in InDesign
And to rule out it is any kind of preference/system issue: create a new user account on your Mac, and run InDesign from that... does the same issue occur?
Hopeing that one of these will help.
    Cari

  • Why does Firefox keep freezing/locking up?

This has been going on for at least a year. Every time I update Firefox I hope the issue will be resolved, but if anything it's worse.
I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling. I reset. I turned off Hardware acceleration. I updated all of my plugins and Firefox. I tried Safe Mode. I turned off protected mode in Flash.
It has something to do with flash, I'm sure. I used flash blocker and it seemed to help, but not totally. I'll open a tab and it will freeze. Says (Not Responding). Little green processing circle will freeze as well. This happens with flash intensive sites, which these days is most sites. I tried using IE and the sites worked. It's gotten to the point that I actually have to stop using Firefox. What's the deal? Why is it STILL like this? The only resolution is to open task manager and close Firefox.

  • Why does Reaktor keep freezing Logic Pro X?

I have an early 2009 Macbook Pro with 8gb Ram.  Usually sufficient enough to run other NI Plugins inside Logic.  For as long as I can remember Reaktor has always been really unreliable and now everytime I load Reaktor as a plugin or effect plugin and change bettween presets (inside Reaktor) a few times it gives me the spinning beach ball of death.  I moved the Logic.plist and the Reaktor.plist out and back in and even re-installed Logic X.  I can run Reaktor in stand alone just fine and also inside of Maschine 2.0 JUST FINE... no issues, however inside of Logic X it freezes EVERY TIME.  I've double checked all my settings inside Logic and everything seems to be right.  Further I'm running Mavericks and before that Mountain Lion and Logic was really unstable with ML too.  I was hoping maybe the operating system update would help!  And lastly when I click "get info" for Logic Pro I don't have an option to switch between 32 bit or 64 bit like some people do.  I don't know why this is... And I'm just going to guess I'm running in 32 bit.  I could be wrong.  If any of this sounds familiar to you please leave a response and guide me in the right direction.  Is Reaktor just a sketchy *** plug in or is there some setting I'm missing or what?
    Thank you!!!!!!
    Erik-

    1) Logic Pro X doesn't run in 32bit mode... It's a 64bit only application now.. so thats why you don't see the "Run in 32bit mode" option....  You only see that if you are running the older Logic Pro 9. This is also related to why LPX only uses 64bit AU plugins these days... and not the older 32bit only plugins.
    2) What version of Reaktor are you running? 4 or 5? v4 can be very unstable, especially when running it in 64bit mode so you may need to buy the v5 upgrade to resolve this issue.
    3) If you are running the current v5... Have you updated Reaktor via NI's Service Center, to the latest sub version? (I think the latest one is v5.9.0 at this time)
Note: I was working with a client 4 days ago.. and he was using the latest Reaktor extensively with Mav 10.9.3 and LPX 10.0.7 and had no issues throughout the 6 hour session (I just checked with him to make sure I had all the version numbers correct)

  • Why does finder keep freezing up?

I used to run my iMac all the time without shutting down unless a software update required a restart.  Lately, Finder has been freezing up leaving the spinning beach ball of death, and trying to do a relaunch of Finder just freezes everything.  Sometimes when Finder is stuck, other programs will still work but may be slower at responding.
As you may know, if Finder is stuck, there is no logging out or restarting as the menu bar is unresponsive.  Sometimes the menu bar disappears altogether.  My only option has been to hold down the power button until the computer stops running and then push it again to restart.  This has almost become a daily occurance, sometimes 2-3 times a day.  This is getting frustrating.  Sometimes I tell it to restart and everything goes away except the background picture and it will stay there forever unless you push the power button.
Here's my situation:  I have an iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB Ram (just upgraded from 2 GB in February).  This problem started before that, the reason we got more ram.  I have 5 accounts on the computer.  Two of them run all the time, mine and my wife's.  One of the kids may get on and we'll have 3 accounts running.  I installed MacKeeper and run a scan every so often.  No problems there.  We do have Parallels installed but I haven't used it in more than 6 months, although my son uses it to play an online game.  About a month or so ago, Windows says it cannot boot and needs restarted, probably needs reinstalled.  I don't know where the Window's disc is, so I told my son to play something else and Parallels hasn't run since.
I got a new 2TB drive about a month ago to run Time Machine.  It will run backups fine for a couple of days and then says: Latest Backup Failed.  I have to restart to get that working again, also.  The internal 320 GB drive is about 90% full.
I can't think of anything else that may be helpful in determining the problem here, but hopefully someone will know what is going on so I can get it corrected.
    Thanks,
    Cpod

I installed MacKeeper and run a scan every so often.
Look no further - based on reports on here an elsewhere, it seems that MacKeeper is akin to malware. It seems to cause huge problems for many users - and seems to be referred to by the new term 'crapware' by many victims. Search these forums and you'll see what I mean.
For clear instructions on uninstalling it refer to this guide compiled by Phil Stokes:

  • Why does Safari keep freezing?

When on Safari, it will freeze and the loading colored ball will come up and Safari will stop working. This happens every.. twenty minutes or every time I open a new tab. I can use any other program, and I have to Force Quit or it will just sit there. This has been happening for about a week. Please help, not even a year old Macbook. Thanks.

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Please take a moment and click My Settings on the right side of this page. Tell us which Mac you are using and which Mac OS X. That way you have a forum profile set up which makes it easier for troubleshooting. Thanks!
As for Safari. If you have Safari Extensions installed, from your Safari Menu Bar click Safari / Preferences and select the Extensions tab. Turn Extensions off. Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference.
If you do not use Safari extensions, it could be Safari third party add-ons causing the "freezes" Go here for help with that. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
You can also try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari speeds up loading web pages, them move the .plist file to the Trash.
Check for duplicate or corrupted fonts, instructions here.

Make sure you have enough free space on the startup disk. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.

  • Why does iPhoto keep freezing when I edit pictures, forcing me to have to keep quitting it?

    Hi.
I have an imac and an iomega external hard drive on which I store the pics in iPhoto.
Each time I decide to edit a picture, after about three steps ( crop, change to B & W and then sharpen for instance), the thing just locks up, which is when I have to 'force quit' the application.
It is driving me to absolute distraction... this should be a simple task.
Any answers as to why this happens would be much appreciated.
( All software is up to date)

I have not used iPhoto '08 in a very long time, so I hope TD is still following this thread.
This 2008 Mac has 1GB of Ram, which I don't think I can expand/add to?
If you can add to the RAM will depend on the model.
But 1GB might be insuffícient, if you are processing very large image files. What kind of images do you have? Are you processing large scans or moderately sized jpegs?
I'd refrain from running any other programs concurrently, while working with iPhoto. Close Safari and any other app that might be needing much RAM.
If you did not import anything new, I'd try to repair your iPhoto library. Make a backup, before you do that.
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.

  • I can't open my e-mail messages (Hotmail.ca) - again. Why does Firefox keep freezing up my Hotmail account?

Yesterday morning, I opened and read my Hotmail e-mail messages. Last night, Firefox would not let me open any mail. This has happened before, but I don't remember how the problem was solved. Again this morning I tried to read my mail, but had to go to Windows Live to be able to do so. I want to use Firefox as my home page, as that is the best for when I want to access FaceBook, but it isn't any good if I can't open e-mail.

They are the same use your email address as your userid so it will know for instance whether it is MSN or HOTMAIL. I think that change was made a few years ago, yes when I went to Verizon DSL and then Verizon FiOs (Fiber).

  • Why does the video freeze half way through my movie and the audio keep going?

Why does my movie freeze half way through and the audio continues?

Most likely this is due to running out of virtual memory. You can reset virtual memory by restarting your Mac.
Long term you may want to consider purchasing more memory.
