Why doesn't deleting photos free up space?

After running short on hard disk space (500G), I moved about 245G of photos to external drives, and deleted them from Aperture, and Adobe Bridge.  I cannot find any trace of them on my hard drive, but my available  space only increased by 27G.  Where could these files be hiding, or what have I missed?
Thanks for the help!

In the future if you want to prvent Local Snapshots, the directions to do that are here

  • Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space without compromising the integrity of the dvd

Once the iDVD is burned, what can I delete to free up space?  I tried deleting the iMovie events and projects, but then the iDVD would no longer play because it said the movie contents or link was not available.  I was under the impression that once I saved the iDVD that the associated video was saved in that file, not a link to an iMovie event and project.  Can somebody help?  Now I have to find the original footage, re-edit it in iMovie, and start the whole iDVD process over because I deleted the iMovie project and events.

Hmmm, did you actually burn a DVD from the project?

  • HT4890 why doesn't a photo stream icon appear on iCloud although it's enabled

why doesn't a photo stream icon appear on icloud.  It's been enabled in settings and iphoto?

    Because it isn't supposed to.
Photostream is for sharing photos across your devices.

  • Does DELETE operation frees up space

    Hi,
Does DELETE on some rows of a table also free up space on the tablespace.
If no, how to actually free up the tablespace occupied memory in the tablespace after a delete operation.
    Thanks,
    Himadri

    > Rows with a specific condition should be removed and the space
should be freed up. That is what i am looking for.
Oracle does not work like that. For good (performance related) reasons.
Oracle has "percentage used" and "percentage free" space parameters. These you/the DBA need to tune for the optimal balance between performance and space utilisation.
These percentages serve as low- and high-water marks. When there are data above the high water mark, the block is removed from the free list (free list = blocks with sufficient space for more rows to be added to the block).
When the data in a non-free blocks drop below the low water mark, that block is moved back to the free list.
When you delete data, the blocks affected will free space. However, if the current space used of these affected blocks does not drop below the set low water mark, these blocks will not be moved to the free list.
When dealing with large table and deleting rows, you'll often find that no space has been released. The number of rows deleted are scattered across so many disctinct blocks, that the delete did not free sufficient space in any of these blocks to result in them moving to the free list.

  • Why cant I delete photos from event in Iphoto 08?

Set to edit in external editor. After trying to open movie, return to event and cannot delete photos. Open and close program a couple of times, reset to edit in new window, re-open program and I can delete, but only by dragging to the trash located in Iphoto window (cannot drag to desktop trash, use delete key, use command-option-delete etc). Works on a couple of photos, then will not let me delete in any manner again.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Thanks
    Dave

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..

  • How can i delete photos to make space on my phone?

how to delete photos to make room on my phone

Photos that you have saved to an album from email, camera, can be deleted by taping the photo and then taping the trash can lower right corner.  Photos that have been synced to the iPhone from iTunes on a computer must be removed by syncing back to iTunes.

  • Why when i delete photos and movies do i not get the free space back on my hard drive?

I'm desparately trying to free up hard drive space.  I have deleted unwanted photos and videos, emptied iphoto trash, rebooted and emptied regular trash but there is no corresponding increase in available hard drive space!  Please help or the Mac gets it!!

If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as "Backups." The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.

  • Why when I delete photos (from disk) does it not clear space on my hard drive?

I went from 800  photos to 51 and my available HD space remains the same.  So in total I deleted about 750 20+MB files.  I should have more space free on my hard drive but there is nothing.  I make sure to choose "delete from disk" as opposed to just "remove" so I can't imagine the problem.  I even went back in and erased back ups in the lightroom folder wondering if maybe the images were hiding out there.  Deleting back up folders made nominal difference.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rob,
You are right. It was GB not MB.  I am sure the disk I am looking at is the correct one.  I go to the apple, about this mac, more info, storage.  Unfortunately I just hit empty trash over and over without looking to see if the files made it in.  It has always cleared space before so I assumed it would this time.  I do think they made it as I always heard the sound of the trash clearing but I did not actually look for the files first.
I did a lot of research yesterday as to what could be going on and found an article that said time machine backs up locally on my HD and if I want space I can disable that.  I found the folder with the back ups and saw there were many.  I followed the tutorial online and disabled the back ups and now the folder is gone so you would think- more space.  Not one single GB was returned.
I ended up erasing music and photos from iPhoto and a few movies and space cleared when I did those things.  Still wondering what happened and want the other space back.  750 raw files is a lot of space, or should be.
Wondering if there is some back up to the back up somewhere.....
Thanks for responding .. I will take all input I can get!

  • Why does iPhoto delete photos out of secure photo storage apps, and there is no option Not to delete from everywhere ie all albums on all devices

I purchased IPhoto then saw a duplicate photo in my photo album so went to delete it, the delete function came up with a message this photo is in more than one album do you want to delete from everywhere, as no other option available ie " no just this album" I hit delete and then found it had deleted the photo from all my devices 2 iPhones and 2 iPads, the photo was in a " Safe App " supposed to be secure why did this happen, any help would be appreciated

When I downloaded photos from a camera SD card using an adapter, I noticed two Albums were created in the Photo app.(Last Import & All Import). Like you stated, there is no option to delete excess photos without deleting all of them. So this is the lengthy steps I went through to delet the extra album (I hope someone comes up with a shorter process):
    1) Connect iPad into your PC (Make sure you configured to Sync with iTunes)
    2) Go to My Computer > right click and open Apple iPad > right click and open  Internal Storage > right click and  open DCIM. (This will show the photos from those to Albums only)
    3) Right click on a empty space on the desktop
    4) Click on New > Folder
    5) Go back to the DCIM files and right click on each file(one at a time) then copy and paste each file over the New Folder.
    6) Go back to the DCIM files and open each folder and right click and delete each photo.
You will notice that all the same photos are being deleted on the Photo app simultaneously.
    7) Then drag the New Folder into you Pictures on the PC.
8)Then open iTunes on your PC and click on the Photo tab and click Sync on the bottom right to import those photos back to your iPad.
I hope my scenario can apply to you.

  • Why do I have photos taking up space

I am tryin to sync my iPhone but its saying that I dont have enough space.  Looking at whats taking up alot of the space, it says "photos".  Yet I do not have anything ticked in the options to sync photos.  I have sync several times to ensure it was up to date, but still not luck.
Why on earth does it say I have so much space of photos when I am not syncing ANY photos?
    Any advice?
    Thanks

Ah yes I do.  Upon checking I realise that I have a heap of photos from Photo Stream.  Im confused though because most of which are from photos from within iPhoto.

  • Why doesn't my photos in my iCloud backup restore?

    Hi,
Just did a factory reset on my iPhone 4S running 5.0.1 yesterday.
It seems that none of my old photos from "Camera Album" restores, although I've got more than 4.7 gbs photos stored according to iCloud?
This bothers me, as it is more than 1.000 photos that I've apparantly lost.

Camera Album = Camera Roll. My mistake. All my photos were on the camera roll, and the backup have been done (apparantly, due to the photo backup size being 4.7GBs), but the backup doesn't return to the phone?
I selected the iCloud backup when restoring my phone, but as said, the only thing that have returned to my phone is my contacts.
And my apologies for the messy language - Us danes don't ace english. :-)

  • Why doesn't deleting Voice Memos in iTunes delete them on my iPod Touch

hi. i synch my ipod touch with itunes and all my newly recorded voice memos come to my library in the voice memo playlist. according to the ipod touch manual i go and delete the unnecessary voice memos in my library and typically they are deleted from the voice memo playlist. when i synch my ipod i expect the deleted voice memos are also deleted from my ipod touch but it doesn't. this is very annoying for me because i am visually impaired and deleting and managing voice memos in my library and synching them with my ipod is much much easier for me rather than deleting them using the device. any idea?
    thanks

    The Users Guide says:
"However, if you delete a voice memo from
iTunes, it is deleted from iPod touch the next time you sync with iTunes. "
    - Are you saying the Voice Memos are still on the iPod after you sync?
If yest see if resetting the iPod will correct the problem.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Next would be to restore from backup followed by restoring to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Why would a deleted photo show up in my ipad 2 photo's?( not in photo stream)

  • I have filled a backup drive with 1 terabyte and my computer is running very slow. what files are safe to delete to free up space?

what files are safe to put in the trash without messing up programs?

It would be wise to move your large libraries like your iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom etc, iTunes, iMoves to an external HD. That will free up HD space. After you have relocated those libraries move the copies on the internal HD to the trash and empty the trash. This is the smartest and safest method. Apple explains how to move these libraries in:
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iMovie: How to move the Library to an EHD
