Why doesn't Firefox close all tabs when exiting?

I see several users have problems with Firefox not saving tabs when closing..... My trouble is just the opposite: Firefox re-opens all tabs when restarting, even when "quit" is selected in closing.

Make sure that Firefox is closing properly, otherwise it may be considered as a rash and that causes Firefox to reopen those tabs automatically.<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs and [[Firefox hangs]] (Hang at exit)
Firefox 3.5 and later versions will automatically try to restore the tabs and windows from the last session if a crash has occurred or Firefox wasn't closed properly the previous time.
Set the pref [http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes] to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
See:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Session_Restore#Preferences

To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

  • In the previous version of Firefox I could close the window and still have my tabs intact when I reopened it. Why does FF 4 closes all tabs and doesn't give me an option to save them? (And if it does, where do I change the setting?)

In the previous version of Firefox, before closing a window with tabs still open, it asked if I would like to "save and close", "close all tabs" or "cancel" the operation. FF4 will just alert me that I am closing those tabs and ask me is I want to continue, without giving the option to save my research for a later use.

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.<br />
    Another possibility is to use:
*Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • Can I set Thunderbird to close all tabs when I shut it down so the next session starts fresh.

I would prefer to have a clear work platform each time I start Thunderbird and only see tabs relevant to that session. If the program could be set to close all tabs automatically when I shut down, that would solve my problem.
    Thanks,
    Keith Marshall.

I guess your best bet is to right-click the most left tab - 'Close Other Tabs' before shutting down Thunderbird.

  • Why doesn't Firefox close tabs when I use the command-w shortcut keys?

Every so often, on random sites, I would have 2 or three tabs open. I would command-w (on a Mac) to close the front most tab, and it would close. Bringing the next tab to the front. But when I hit command-w again, I get the warning sound on my Mac, and the tab does not want to close. Even though Firefox is at the most front of applications, and the tab I'm trying to close is at the front of Firefox browser window. I have to click on the page (even though it's already at the front), for command-w to work and close the tab. I've reset Firefox to default twice already. I've even deleted it, and reinstalled it.

One situation in which Command+w or Ctrl+w might not work is if the "focus" is in a plugin such as the Flash player used on Youtube after you interact with the player controls. Firefox will continue to send the keyboard input to the plugin until you move the focus back to the page. Does that account for any of the problem?

  • Firefox 4 tries to close all tabs when closing a pop-up. How do I stop this?

Just upgraded to Firefox 4 yesterday. It's great! EXCEPT every time a pop-up occurs, if I try to just click on the "x" to close the pop-up, Firefox wants to close all my tabs (and thus my browser).

For example, on the following link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Clear2GO-Water-Bottle-with-Filter/dp/B002VPRKSC/ref=pd_sim_k_4
When I click on the water bottle image, a window pops up with an enlarged picture of the product. However, when I try to close the popup, it asks me if I want to close all my tabs.

  • Tabs d0 not close on exit; when restarted, last-used tabs automatically open. How to I close ALL TABS on exit so that nothing re-opens when Firefox 4 is started?

All last-used tabs remain "visible" and do not close automatically on exit from Firefox 4. This means that when a new session is started, the last-used tab (website) automatically opens. How can ALL TABS be closed on exit from Firefox?

Go to Tools | Add-ons | Plugins ans disable "My Web Search". This program is spyware and will cause you all sorts of problems. After you disable it, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

  • Firefox is asking to close all tabs when I close a firefox popup message.

Open 2 or 3 sites in tab, and click a link which gives popup message, close the popup message, firefox asks to close all the tabs, which does not use to happen before in older versions. Please advice

For example, on the following link:
    http://www.amazon.com/Clear2GO-Water-Bottle-with-Filter/dp/B002VPRKSC/ref=pd_sim_k_4

  • Why doesn't Firefox keep the tabs in the way it is supposed to do?

I have been using Firefox for a long time and know my way round it. In recent times it simply refuses to restore open tabs. On the internet help files it merely states the obvious regarding settings. I know all this basic stuff. I have reset the browser back to default settings too, but it makes no difference. It just won't work. I have 2 machines (both running XP home) that are exactly the same. I have got so fed up that I have installed other browsers that don't drop the tabs like Firefox does, but they have other issues that I don't like so I have come back to try and get some answers. It seems to be a widespread problem with the software, as loads of people seem to be having the same issues.

Are you running any cleanup software like CCleaner that way be removing this session data?
In case you are using "Clear history when Firefox closes":
*do not clear the Browsing History
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Clear+Recent+History
Note that clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, and passwords.

  • Firefox closes ALL tabs & exits when I ONLY close the AOL Mail tab.

When I have maybe 5 or 6 tabs open, and I am done with my AOL mail tab and close it ONLY, the entire window with all of my pages close out. My system is set to recover the last tabs I had open, but when I reopen Firefox (I have to manually, the system does not even restart it), everything is gone. I tried opening AOL mail in another separate window, and this still happens (when I close out the AOL page only). I checked my updates and Firefox is the newest. I run both my security software programs 2 times per day, along with STOPzilla. It clears cookies and I have never had an issue until this past week. I have not downloaded anything new. All is fine as long as I do not open AOL mail. Thinking this was an AOL issue, I contacted them, and they assure me that it must be my issue (of course). I then removed and deleted the Firefox program and re-downloaded it....still no help.
I am using the latest AOL mail, and cannot help but wonder if there is something in that which causes me to lose everything. It's frustrating because none of my tabs are kept, even though I have it set to caution me before the Firefox window is closed, and remember my tabs for "next time."

then press the button '''i'll be careful i promise'''
then type in the bar '''browser.tabs.closeButtons'''
then '''right click on it''', select '''modify''' and put''' 1'''

  • Why doesn't firefox close out when I'm done with it and close it; when next I try to open firefox again I get a dialog box telling me firefox is open and to close it or restart my computer? I'm tired of doing that one of more times a day.

    1. This happens at least once a day, and sometimes multiple times. Today it's happened twice, thus far. My home page is FoxNews.com and if I leave it up overnight or for longer periods during the day firefox doesn't allow the refresh of the home page it just goes to yahoo 404--error can't find the webpage. Then when I enter FoxNews.com it adds a /error to the url and doesn't allow me to go to MY homepage. So I close firefox and then if I try to reopen it and then I get the dialog box saying firefox is open and to close it or restart my computer. Very aggravating. 2. Also the Adobe flash drive update always fails. 3. Webpages get in loops and fail to load to the point I have to stop and refresh or close out and reopen.

One situation in which Command+w or Ctrl+w might not work is if the "focus" is in a plugin such as the Flash player used on Youtube after you interact with the player controls. Firefox will continue to send the keyboard input to the plugin until you move the focus back to the page. Does that account for any of the problem?

  • Firefox suddenly began asking if I wanted to close all tabs when I closed it, and although my setting is set to "Show my Windows and Tabs from last time" I open up to Google instead of my old tabs. Any solutions?

I can still recover my old tabs by going History> Recently Closed Windows but I'm worried about when I restart my computer.
Edit: While trying a reinstall I found out there was another firefox "running" even though it didn't show up in my taskbar. I went into task manager and ended the process. When I next opened firefox three windows opened up to the start page but froze (nothing but a white screen). After closing those from the task manager and trying again I got the "Well this is embarrassing" message and could no longer restore my old tabs. (I'd bookmarked them expecting this to happen eventually) For now everything seems to be back to normal, but this is still a pretty worrisome problem.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.
*You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
*To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Deselect: [ ] "Permanent Private Browsing mode"

  • Why doesn't Firefox close even when I close it. When I try to open it again I get a "Firefox is running, please close before reopening...or something like that", but I can't close it and it's not really open where I can see it.

It just won't close unless I reboot my computer

One situation in which Command+w or Ctrl+w might not work is if the "focus" is in a plugin such as the Flash player used on Youtube after you interact with the player controls. • Why doesn't Firefox display all photos posted on Facebook?

Firefox will display some, but not all, photos posted by my friends on Facebook. IE8 displays them all. Do I need to reconfigure FireFox settings to see all photos posted on Facebook?

Thanks. "*Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key). " fixed the problem.

  • Why doesn't firefox interface with egames when it did before this update?

Before updating Firefox 4.0, I was able to receive, download and play games from egame.com. Now I am having problems with doing this. Will this problem be fixed soon or can I delete 4.0 and go back to the earlier version that worked well with egames?
