Why doesn't  iTunes find my music or app files anymore?

Whenever I boot up the computer and run iTunes I find that my iTunes account is completely empty- no music, no purchases, nothing. The first time I didn't think much of it, but now I've reloaded all of my music several times and iTunes keeps resetting on a daily basis!!! Also, everytime I reload the music I end up with multiple copies of everything.  I only have about 6,000 songs but when it is done reloading (a couple hours later) I have over 22,000.  I have tried deleating itunes and re-installing it.  I have tried -adding a folder, -adding files -changing my preferences -keep media file organized and the -copy files to itunes media folder but it doesn't save any of these features.   I have also tried changing my configsys or system configuration - turning off all services and startups except MicroSoft and Apple.  I have searched the Internet and have not found any solutions that work. I am very frustrated and discouraged after wasting so much time on this.

You need to give a little more inforamtion about your set up.
Do you have a default iTunes setup with your music in c:...My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music?
Or are you using another drive or a network?
The first thing you need to check is if your Music files are still where they should be.
You can also check in Edit>>Preferences>>Advanced>>General for the location of your iTunes Music folder, what does it say, as is it correct?

  • Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?

    Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?  I copied these files to my iMac from an old PC laptop that no longer has internet access.

    After downloading via iTunes, I move MP3 files from the default iTunes podcast folder to another folder (on an a external disk), I also change the name of the file and I change some MP3-tags.
    You download from the iTunes store, delete the podcast, mess with it, move it around, rename it, change the tags then try to add it back to iTunes?
    I want all my files in one index, the iTunes Music Library
    In iTunes, right click - get info, click the Options tab and set *Media Kind:* to Music.

  • Why can't iTunes find the music from an external hard drive?

    I moved my music to an external hard drive to free up space on my old laptop.  Since I moved to a new laptop, iTunes never seems to find the music.  I have to go through and manually select a song for it to find it one and then it says should it use this to find the rest of the songs.  Then it crashes.  I have reinstalled iTunes tonight with no real improvement.  I want to be able to create a playlist to upload to my new iPad as well as updating music on my iPod but I can't do any of it.  Please, any advice!

    Has the new laptop given the external drive a different drive letter?
    The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
    Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
    In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
    If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • I recently downloaded the new iTunes version. Why doesn't my new uploaded music appear in the "My Music" playlist?

    I recently downloaded the new iTunes version. Why doesn't my new uploaded music appear in the top of the "Music" playlist?

    First see if Finder Preferences has the box checked for... show CD, DVD, iPods checked.
    Sometimes dirty DVDs won't read, mine is ery particular about smudges and scratches.
    Try a SMC Reset:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
    Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Why doesn't Maven find jfxrt.jar, although it is included in the JDK?

    Hi,
    Why doesn't Maven find jfxrt.jar, although it is included in the JDK?
    My solution to build JavaFX apps with Maven is:
    <dependency>
                <groupId>com.oracle</groupId>
                <artifactId>javafx</artifactId>
                <version>2.2</version>
                <scope>system</scope>
                <systemPath>${java.home}/lib/jfxrt.jar</systemPath>
    </dependency>It works, but I wonder why the Maven build process can't find it automatically, as any other Java dependency, too.
    If I build without the dependency, it can't find javafx imports.
    Since Java 7 Update 6 it is included in the JDK.

    There is a long drawn-out thread on this (you don't need to read it):
    Error initializing OC4J server (JDev 10.1.3 EA1) "JDK 7u6 JavaFX integration - Is jfxrt.jar supposed to be on the classpath?"
    Short summary is that jfxrt.jar is in the jdk/jre as of 7u6, but not on the default classpath for the jdk/jre (as of 7u13).
    This will change in a future release (e.g. I believe the latest early access builds of jdk8 do have jfxrt.jar on the default runtime classpath).
    So for now, you will need to explicitly add jfxrt.jar to the classpath. There are various ways to do this, one is to use a system dependency and then use the maven ant run plugin to package your app as is done in this example: http://code.google.com/p/willow-browser/source/browse/pom.xml
    <dependency>
      <groupId>javafx</groupId>
      <artifactId>jfxrt</artifactId>
      <version>${javafx.min.version}</version>
      <scope>system</scope>
      <systemPath>${javafx.runtime.lib.jar}</systemPath>
    </dependency>
    <plugin>
      <artifactId>maven-antrun-plugin</artifactId>
      <version>1.6</version>
      <executions>
        <execution>
          <id>create-launcher-jar</id>
          <phase>package</phase>
          <goals>
            <goal>run</goal>
          </goals>
          <configuration>
            <target xmlns:fx="javafx:com.sun.javafx.tools.ant">
              <taskdef
                  uri="javafx:com.sun.javafx.tools.ant"
                  resource="com/sun/javafx/tools/ant/antlib.xml"
                  classpath="${javafx.tools.ant.jar}"/>
                <fx:application id="fxApp"
                    name="${project.name}"
                    mainClass="${exec.mainClass}"/>
                <fx:jar destfile="${project.build.directory}/${project.build.finalName}-launcher">
                  <fx:application refid="fxApp"/>
                  <fx:fileset dir="${project.build.directory}/classes"/>
                </fx:jar>
                <attachartifact
                    file="${project.build.directory}/${project.build.finalName}-launcher.jar"
                    classifier="launcher"/>
            </target>
          </configuration>
        </execution>
      </executions>
    </plugin>Another way would be to make use of the zenjava javafx maven plugin:

  • HT2470 Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder, if I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder

    Why won't Itunes store my music library in my User/Music Folder?
    If I select my user name as a storage location in Itunes, Itunes creates folders for artist name right in my user folder, instead of in my user/music folder.  This gets especially annoying because if I tell Itunes to store my "media" in my user/music folder, Itunes will then create a folder named "music" in my "music" folder and will also create additional folders in my user/music folder location to store other non-music media in as well. It is very annoying to see this lack of affinity for folders between two Apple created programs.

  • Why can I not find my music that I download from the iTunes Store or that was ripped from a cd in my library

    I have bought several music from iTunes and now I cannot find them in my library.  The same goes for music that I have ripped from my cds.  What gives?!  Why doesn't the music stay in the iTunes library like it does in Windows Media.  There is music that I cannot get again and this is not acceptable.

    Your iPod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time.  If you try connecting the iPod to a new iTunes library or PC, you won't be able to add any new content to it until you choose the Erase and Sync option that you are prompted with when you plug it in or restore the iPod if that option doesn't appear.
    If you have content on your iPod that needs to be copied back over to your iPod, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to you can recover these contents and moved them back over to your iTunes library.

  • Changed laptops, now iTunes can't find my music on my file server

    Ok, here's what happened when I recently switched laptops
    - I use iTunes to point to the music I store on my file server via a network share (WinXP)
    - I manually manage my iTunes folders
    - I took the \My Documents\My Music\iTunes directory from my old laptop and copied it to the same location to my new laptop
    - Installed iTunes 9 on the new laptop
    - When iTunes9 loaded on the new laptop ALMOST all music files in my library loaded with an exclamation point indicating that it couldn't locate the file (even though the file locations never changed)
    Ok... so here's the problem. I have over 20,000 songs with ratings information and if I just re-add all the files from the network share to the iTunes library again then it looks like I'd lose those ratings.
    The only way that I can see to fix things is to individually point iTunes to the network share location of the file for each file... YUCK!
    Is there a script or something I can write to tell it to find these files, or at least copy the ID3 tags to the duplicated songs that I re-added from the network share.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

    Something is different in the paths to the files....hence itunes cannot find them.
    Sound like you know about the ITL file, which is why you copied it over.
    What you can do is look in its companion XML file to see the paths itunes thinks it should be using.
    If your XML is really big, open it using WordPad instead of NotePad. About the 10th line down is the itunes preference setting for the itunes folder:
    key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/</string>
    On my system it's K:/iTunes Music
    The %20 just indicates a space.
    Then each song will have its own path
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/K:/iTunes%20Music/Cowboy%20Junkies/The%20Trinity%20Session/07%2 0200%20More%20Miles.mp3</string>
    Now....can you see ANYTHING funny in one of those song paths?Is there an extra space, a different user name, anything different than what you could browse to in Windows Explorer?
