Why doesn't my DVD play in a DVD Player?

OK...frustration has set in....
I finally got a DVD out of a week's worth of effort, but when I put it in a DVD player I get nothing!
I'm using Sony DVDs (Memorex was even more of a nightmare). How do I get my movie burned correctly?
I built the DVD straight from an HD mp4, and it plays just fine in the Mac, but the DVD player doesn't recognize my effort...HELP!!!!

Hello, Mikemacx,
Just for information, what are you burning to DVD? Video, photo slideshows?
Can you burn a disk image from your iDVD project? (From within your iDVD project, select File->Save as Disc Image). This will look like the burn process and take just as long for the encoding, but the end result is a disk image file, not a burned DVD disk. You can test out this disk image file by clicking on it to open/mount it, then open the application DVD Player. The project should begin playing on your computer. If it plays correctly, then the disk image has been successfully created. You can use it to burn the actual DVD disk using Disk Utility )or Toast, if you prefer that).
The advantage of a disk image file is that it is a self-contained file. You can safely move, change or delete all the original files/videos/photos used in the project and still retain the ability to burn DVD disks of this project in the future. A disk image saves wear on the iDVD project, which is not self-contained, but merely aliases pointing to the actual media. Sometimes there are glitches in iDVD's retrieval of the media.
A disk image can be easily moved to another drive for storage, or to another computer.
Do use a good brand of DVD-R disk, such as Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden. Sonys are also usually good.
Memorex and TDK are not recommended here because their disk layers are thinner; more likely to produce burning/playback problems. I must add that I have noticed recently that the Memorex disks seem thicker, but I have not gone back to them since my first DVD burn. I use Verbatim gold archival DVD-R SL disks, burn at 4x or 2x, and have not had a problem with my DVD disks playing on most players.
Often it is the DVD player itself that is the problem. Trying your burned DVD on several players may prove that the disk is fine; the player is not. One of my DVD players would not read the audio tracks correctly, but the Sony always worked fine.
Burn at a slow speed to get a more consistent burn. Choose 4x or slower.
Post back if these suggestions do not resolve your issues.

I have a 15" Macbook Pro w/ retina display.  Why doesn't the dvd play in the external usb superdrive?

Again, it's a regularly purchased (Hollywood or so) movie DVD, yes? And it's not only this one DVD, but every other as well, yes? Please confirm.
If so, it's the DVD Player app that hangs for whatever reason, and not a broken drive.
Not that it's a "final solution", but just to see if you can generally play DVD's on this machine, would you mind installing and trying MPlayerX to play a DVD? It's a little app from the App Store, free of charge and much used around the globe. (Actually, you may want to keep it as it plays many more different formats...)
Edit: Forgot to say that you will probably need to launch the DVD manually from MPlayerX, most likely after the DVD Player app crashed again.
Let us know what MPlayerX does. And still, don't forget confirming the above, thanks.

Why doesn't the DVD I burnt using iMovie work on my DVD recorder?

You probably used the Finder and burned a data DVD. They can only play on a computer.
Do you have any DVD authoring software?

    - Try a reset. Nothiong is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

Why doesn´t music stop playing when making a call?
Shouldn´t that be automatic like it used to be in iOS6?

Ok, I just realised that this only happens if the current page in iBooks has a video on it.  If the page has only text and images, there is no problem.
I still think it is a bug though. If the video is not running, I don't see why the music player should be stopped. If I choose to start the video on the page, THEN the music player should be stopped.

Why won't the dvd player recognize a disc?  The brand new dvd I insert keepgetting ejected.

Try cleaning the lens of the optical drive.
Use a DVD lens cleaning disk.
If you have a can of compressed air, shoot some in to the slot.
Us a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently insert it into the slot.
    Ciao.

  • Why is my macbook DVD player no longer playing commercial DVD's that it used to play perfectly? It reads the disc, but then says not permitted when I hit play. It is much older than 12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix?

The macbook reads a disc, and opens up DVD player but then says not permitted when I hit play, or any other button. Sometimes the initial music plays, but the screen remains black and then it all stops. These are shop bought DVD's that have previously worked on here, and work in DVD players, but have suddenly stopped. The computer is much older than the12 months warantee so I hope there is an easy fix? Thankyou!

    Three things you can try:
    1. Clean the superdrive with a proprietory CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes.
    2. Perform an SMC reset:

  • Why can only apple DVD player do so well?

This is a slow computer. Pismo laptop G3 500mhz. I don't understand why only Apples DVD player can play so well and at the same time use less than half the CPU. Trying to use any other player for DVD.s will result in skips and 100% CPU usage. Even when one plays any kind of movie file AVI , mov. etc with any compatible player, the computer at its best is at 100% usage and some performance issues. The difference between using apple's player for DVD ,s or video TS folders is so huge, that it can only be because of a well written code. Why did not others follow apple?

Region encoding is what the motion picture studios use to control the worldwide release of their movies. Apple limits the region change / settings to 5 times. The only way around this is to install a new motherboard....sorry.

  • How to install software on an imac that doesn't have DVD player built in?

I just got my daughter an imac G3 running OS 10.4.11. I went to install iwork onto the computer, and it spit the disc out. i then realized the computer does not have a DVD player built in. How do I install newer software? It runs and plays CD fine. Any help?

Since the other Mac is an eMac, it's a FireWire (400) cable, also called 6-pin to 6-pin. OWC has it.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394A66036/
I'm not sure if Radio Shack has it. Look for something like the above.
An eMac may be one of the models where the optical drive is not accessible over FireWire Target Disk Mode. If the hard drive and optical drive are on the same IDE bus, only the one that is set as Master (usually the hard drive) is available to the other Mac.
So give it a try. If it does not work (eMac's optical drive not accessible from the iMac), you will have to reverse the roles of the two Macs. Start up the iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode. Connect it to the eMac that is started up normally. Set the eMac to start up from the iMac's hard drive in System Preferences +Startup Disk+ pane. If it's Tiger, your eMac should be able to start up from it. Restart. Insert the software disc and let the eMac install the software onto the iMac's hard drive. After installation completes, change the eMac's startup disk setting back, shut down the eMac, disconnect the FireWire cable, and restart the iMac normally.
Note: Unless you purchased the family license for iWork, it should only be installed on one Mac at a time.

  • Why won't the DVD Player recognise the burned HD DVD?

Can't find the answer and don't know where to start looking. (My Software Update is up to date.)
I spent a (24/7) week compressing, building and burning 60 minutes (3.8GB) of HD-DVD on a DVD-R. The latter plays perfectly in my Mac, (DVD Player) but when I load it into the (Toshiba HD-E1KE) DVD player, the 'green' window starts off by saying: HD DVD, but then switches to saying: M55G and the on-screen caption says: NOT IN DVD FORMAT.
I have checked and rechecked the DVD-Studio-Pro Disc Properties were set to Red Laser, Single Layer, One Side and 12 cm and (for my case) PAL and HD DVD.
What am I missing? As you will appreciate, having sweated blood to get this far and for it to fall at the final hurdle is driving me NUTS!
    Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Dual Core, 3GB 667 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Well, you all asked how I got on and here it is...
I am now here in California where I collared a "Genius" in an Apple Store who also knows this stuff. (I love those guys!)
The bottom line (according to him and he SEEMS to know exacty what he is talking about) Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Compressor and Macs are INCAPABLE of producing an HD DVD, notwithstanding the very strong suggestion to the contrary by Apple in their product information.
He says that no Apple currently contains the required appraratus to even burn a DVD in HD, assuming you got that far in the editing, formatting and compression.
I am extremely displeased, as you can imagine, as I have spent a great deal of money and time on a project which (according to the Genius) never had a chance of working - on ANY Mac equipment. All you can do in FCP and DVDSP is produce and burn an SD DVD, so what's the blooming point of all that "HD" suffixing unless to hoodwink people into handing over large sums of money to Apple?
I suppose there is a slim chance I might find an outfit somewhere in London who will take it all as a data file and burn it onto an HD DVD for me, although I do not as yet know where to look.
Even if I CAN, it will cost me more money I never anticipated when I started all this and means I cannot produce this (or other such) work independently.
Forgive me for saying so, but I do find the whole thing close to dishonest, as such a major shortcoming ought to have been made crystal clear on the BOX, let alone within the verbose and often repetitive manuals weighty enough to half fill the Library of Congress!
    Is it me?
I have to say that it appears there is nobody anywhere who has managed to burn an HD DVD using this gear, so it looks like the end of the road for the stated reason.
If anybody knows of a way of getting it burned professionally somewhere in England without costing silly money, it might save my project.
    End of rant!!!

  • Why doesn't animated GIF play?

I have made 2 animated Gifs one plays fine the other doesn't. When I preview in Safari all that shows is the full image and nothing happens.
It runs fine in the timeline but in save-for-web the play buttons are greyed out and all I see is the full composite image. 3 of the layers have drop shadows but I don't think that is the reason. Any ideas?

Yes GIF is selected. I have now found that it works converting it to frames. But not sure why the other one works not converting to frames. Should they always be converted to frames?

  • Why doesn't CD-R play in the car?

    Hi!
I burned music cd (CD-R) on my computer and it plays fine in the computer but doesn't play in the car. Why?

    As seventy one says.
Depends largely on the age of the player. Most recent ones (up to 3 or 4 years old) should play CD-R perfectly well, provided they're burned as audio CDs.
Some will also play mp3s from data discs.
Older than 4 to 5 years, or budget players, the scene is more fragmented. Most won't, some will.
6 years and older, less and less likely it'll be compatible.
