Why doesn't my iMac Restart?

Suddenly I noticed that my iMac wouldn't restart, it freezed with a white screen after giving to tone of restarting. I tried several times but the same thing occured. Then I thought it could be because I always had my iPod connected (although this shouldn't be a problem at all!!), so I disconnected the iPod and the Restart went out succesfully.
Coincidence? Is it due to the iPod?
Help please. I want to know what the real problem might be in order to solve it as quick as possible.
Thank you.

I suggest that you familiarize yourself with any regular maintenance that your Mac needs that you may not be doing by using this excellent info site;

Also, make sure that you have all the Apple recommended software/firmware updates for your Mac and iPod.

  • Why doesn't my iMac tell me what is being down loaded when I can see that my modem is downloading something

why doesn't my imac tell me what is being dowloaded when i can see that my modem is downloading something?

There are many reasons for the activity light on your cable or DSL modem to be flashing. Your Mac could be checking for or downloading updates in the background. It could be checking e-mail. It could be syncing a cloud service like iCloud, Dropbox, etc.
If your Mac isn't the only thing on the network, then the light could be flashing due to some other device on the network downloading an update, syncing something, etc.
And, of course, it's always possible your network is under attack by an automated botnet or something. You'd be surprised how often a device exposed to the internet directly - as a modem like this is - will be hit with attempted attacks, in an attempt to find things that are vulnerable.

BTW, what version of OS X are you running?

  • Why doesn't my imac turn on when I turn on Apple TV?

Why doesn’t my imac turn on when I turn on Apple TV?

Yes, otherwise some people might have to walk up to the third floor and turn on iMac,
and then go back down to living room in order to stream form iTunes. My iMac is close,
but not in same room. There must be something I don't have set up right.

  • Why doesn't my iMac boot up? It only keeps re-booting, then  shuts down and re-boots

For some reason, since installing Mountain Lion, I have had a lot of problems with the iMac starting...it keeps re-booting and re-booting...
what can I do to get into my iMac?

Srartup disk Full can destroy your Hard Drive installation.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, or are running 10.7+, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there.
If it starts in Safe Mode, see if you can empty the trash or free up a few GB by trashing files.

  • Why doesn't my iMac see my external drive?

I have an iMac 20" 2.16 Core 2 Duo.  The machine is operating fine.  That's not the issue.  I am trying to plug into it a 1TB Maxtor external drive that I used on my G4.  The problem is the external does not show up on my iMac.  I have tried using disk utility, but it doesn't see the drive.  Here's the kicker.  When I do System Profiler, it is seeing that the external drive is there.  I have tried it through both the Maxtor's firewire and USB connections.  In either connection, the System Profiler sees the drive. My question is how can I access it?

    Hello
have a look at seagate support pages"External Hard Drive Troubleshooter for Mac OS" , here

  • Why doesn't my iMac recognize my external hard drive?

I updated my imac from leopard to snow leopard to lion. I plugged in MY Book external hard drive, which had been working, but now it is not recognized. I went to the disk utility but all the First Aid buttons are greyed out and I can't do anything. I can't back it up anyplace because its not recognized. What do I do??
How do I upgrade the Firmware, which is one suggestion I read in the forum?  The My Book was separated into to sections, but I also upgraded my Mac Book Pro to Lion, so it doesn't work there either. Double trouble!!

    Go to finder .
    Apps
You see 1 app or nothing like bootcam or idisc
put your mouse behind apps and you see hide klick whith your mouse on this and enjoy.now you see idisc and
    Your computer.

  • Why doesn't my iMAC (Safari) always ask to save my password for a website?

Many of my old websites have a saved password on the Safari preferences.  But lately no new sites have asked me "if i want to save the password to this site".
My settings in Safari have not changed.. Any ideas what causes this and how to change set up to always ask to save my password?
    Thank you,
    VA

The OP doesn't say they are having problems with their old websites.
Many sites delibertly code their login web pages so passwords won't be saved. I don't know how to determine this.
Now, if you are having a problem with an old website that previously worked. It may not because the keychain is outdated.
This is a real pain. Especially when I deleted a bunch of keychains, yet when I go back to safari and type username and asswords, I don't get a prompt to save them. At least at login.yahoo.com
What is the chance of safari getting changed to remember all entered data regardless of how the login webpage is encoded? I have heard third party applications do this. It shouldn't be website determined. Shared computers - no saving, most other cases, up to user.
Now instead of my passwords safe in the keychain, I have to save them somewhere else. A lot more inconvient and insecure.

  • Why doesn't my iMac recognize Turbo Tax 2013 program?

I have installed turbo tax on this same iMac the last three years without incident, but when I tried to install 2013, the iMac does not even allow me to install it.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

As I can see, TurboTax 2013 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 with a 64-bit processor > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3696 If you have a 64-bit processor and your info is right, you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • Why doesn't my iMac burn printable DVDs?

    My iMac:
    27-inch, Late 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i5
    Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F37)
My Superdrive having inserted blank DVD:
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H:
      Firmware Revision:          3AHB
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO

      Overwritable:          Yes
      Appendable:          Yes
      Write Speeds:          2x, 4x, 6x, 8x
    My issue:
I have had no issues burning CDs and DVDs before. I recently bought a new printer that prints onto DVDs, so I bought some generic printable DVD-RWs and tried to burn from iDVD. The process seems to start ok, but stops about 1 minute into the actual burn and spits the DVD out of the drive. No error message, but this screen remains...
Just to check that my Superdrive was still working, I then tried a non-printable TDK DVD+R and a non-printable Kodak DVD-R and burned with no issues.
I decided it must be the generic printable DVDs, so I bought some printable imation DVD-Rs, but these will not work either.
Is there a known issue with printable DVDs or do I just need to keep trying different brands until I find one that works?

It may be the layer they have and your Superdrive - it may not like the different "feel" of printable media. I don't think iDVD has anything to do with it.
Take a look at these which I found googling:

  • Why is my Intel iMac restarting randomly and USB keyboard not working randomly?

My intel iMac has been randomly rebooting itself without any error messages.  It also seems to coincide with the keyboard (USB) not working, but not always.  At first, it seemed to happen right after waking the computer from sleep, but now it happens when I am just sitting at the computer about once or twice a day.  For now, i have temporarily removed all external devices (except time capsule) and disabled any bluetooth or iTunes synch'ing over wifi.  I have also disabled all power management features.
I've tried different keyboards and resetting the SMC.  Could bad memory cause this?

Could be anything from a loose power cable, to loose or bad RAM module.
    1. Check all your power connections, including the mag connector on the back of the iMac.
    2.  Reinstall the RAM modules, as per > iMac: How to remove or install memory. When installing new or reinstalling RAM, be sure to push firmly on each module with both thumbs to insure that they are fully seated in the slots.
Then if it is still acting up...
    3. Run the > Extended Apple Hardware Test

  • Why doesn't my iMac connect to my Bose Wave 3 sound system when it is supposed to?

    Hi all,
Both my iMac (late 2012) and MacBook (late 2008) are not connecting with my statem of the art Bose wave 3 system. I have made sure both devices are on and discoverable and both bluetooth connections seem to be working because the iMac works well with my trackpad and magic mouse as well as the bluetooth keyboard. The Bose system itself works well with my iphone 5 via bluetooth and i'm afraid to say, a blackberry curve.
The only bit of intel that i can also give is that, the iMac and the also my MacBook both seem to connect momentarily with the Bose bluetooth device but then the Bose bluetoooth device disappears after a second from the list of connected devices in the bluetooth menu under system preferences in the iMac and MacBook. This is strange as it seems to suggest compatibility but unwillingness to connect for anything longer than 1 second. Which may suggest that the Bose bluetooth has a problem but then it shouldn't then connect with both an iPhone and a Blackberry if it (Bose bluetooth device) were the problem.
I have spoken to Bose regarding this issue and having exceeded all very simple possibilities to do with flickering the different connecting modes on both systems (iMac, MacBook and the Bose Wave system), and turning it on & off and so forth, they feel it is probably something even simpler from the apple end of things, but clearly not being the true apple man, I fail to see what this extra setting could be. I urge those that can to please enlighten.
    AJ x

I have spoken to technical support and it was a really very simple solution. I just had to add the device by pressing the '+" button in the bluetooth menu iin system preferences. Simpler than the other simple stuff that I was trying first. Lol

  • Why doesn't my iMac recognise my Windows 7 installation disc?

    Hey guys,
Just trying to install Windows 7 64 bit onto my Mid 2011 iMac (Running Lion 10.7.5) however every time I choose how much I want to partiction my hard drive and start the installation process the iMac gives me an error telling me the disc isn't reckognised. In fact when I put the disc in the iMac fails to reckognise it at all and spits it out after a few minutes of whirring. I know for sure it isn't an upgrade version of Windows 7 and tried cleaning the disc many a time. The drive itself has never been a problem and plays dvds etc. with ease.
Any help would be appericated = )

Hmmm, I am not sure seeing as it was a gift. Is there anything on the box I can look at to see where it originated from?

  • Why doesn't my iMac Intel recognize some Audio CD?

It happens with some audio cd I have. I think it's a hardware incompatibility of some kind, not a software protection, because it happens with my Mac in either iMac (17" Intel CoreDuo) OS.X mode or Windows XP mode. Those CD's play well on other Windows machines. Nero Burning ROM shows that they're simply audio CD's without any extra tracks.

Same here. Can someone please help? Seems to be a common problem.

  • Why doesn't my imac like my fonts?

I am a graphic designer and as of late, using Adobe Indesign is a massive headache. It is almost totally unresponsive. Other programs freeze and have the spinning beachball too. It is impossible to work effectively. My programs freeze every couple of minutes. Due to the feedback I get from Console, I am assuming that fonts are the problem. Dealing with fonts is a big part of my job, so I'd love to figure out how to make my mac and fonts get along.
This is what Console says about the situations:

    About my Computer
I am running Mavericks OSC Version 10.9
Processor: 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    Back up all data.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
From the application's menu bar, select
    File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Boot in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Boot again as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.
