Why doesn't my incoming mail sound work

I am using Mail 3.3 and in the preferences I have a "new mail" sound .wav file in the general tab
and the box is checked for the "play sounds for other mail actions". The "other mail actions" sounds are working, and when I recheck the .wav sound it plays fine in the sample mode. However, the sound doesn't play in regular receive mail mode. Anybody have a suggestion?

This problem has been had since Tiger came out, there are so many posts about this, the one above is 5 pages long.
I posted this post below on the 15th September 2007 -
+At Least I Am Not The Only One+
+It was good to hear the same problem I've had for ever.+
+I was listening to Leo LaPorte's radio podcast and a lady rang in said her few months old iMac would only play the email arrive sound occasionally. She rang Apple but they couldn't fix the problem, so she rang Leo.+
+At least I'm not the only one and Leo did not know how to fix it either, except to say to check System Preferences/Sound, and I know this makes no difference.+
+I just hope Apple were listening and fix Mail some day.+
I have asked here several times and on other forums and also reported to Apple, I have tried so many different ways to fix the problem including full format erase and new install, but all to no avail.
Thunderbird works perfectly and will play any sound format, why not Apple Mail.
I first thought Leopard would fix this, then the 10.5.5, but no.
So disappointing.

  • Why doesn't markup in Mail app work on screen captures or pasted images?

When in Mail app, If i right click and choose Capture selection from Screen I can take a screenshot which is inserted into the email.   The markup icon in the top right of the image never appears.  This is also true for images I copy and paste into the email.  It seems to me that being able to markup a screen capture is one of the most important use cases for this type of feature.

    SteveTEXAS,
When I right click and choose Capture selection. The image it places in the email will not show up on the recipients side. However if I use the Grab shortcuts on my Mac to take a screenshot then drag them in off the Desktop they not only show up on the recipients side, but Markup seems to work on them as well.
I have no idea what would cause this. I think it would be something important to provide feedback to Apple about. https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
You can find the Grab app in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities
Or you can use the keyboard shortcuts to take a screenshot. They will place them on your desktop.
    For a selection - ( Command ) ( Shift ) ( 4 )
    To select a whole window - ( Command ) ( Shift ) ( 4 ) > ( Spacebar ) > Click Window you want
    For whole display - ( Command ) ( Shift ) ( 3 )
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • Setting incoming mail sounds

    Good morning.
I have 3 email accounts set up via my mac mail. I wanted to assign a different sound to each to alert me when mail arrives.
I quickly realized the general settings in preferences for incoming mail sound is a global setting, not adjustable per account. So I created three rules: when to matches *this email address* play *this sound*.
That seems to work EXCEPT that the general setting *New Mail Sound* also occurs. If I set New Mail Sound to None in the General settings, all new mail sound is shut off--including the specific sounds I set in Rules.
Anyone know how to turn off the global new mail sound yet still hear the specific new mail sounds per different email accts?
    Thanks for your help.

Open Mail preferences, click on the Accounts icon in the toolbar, click on the Advanced tab, uncheck the box labeled IDLE and see if that fixes things.

  • INCOMING MAIL SOUNDS DELAYED 2-3 MINUTES

I am not receiving an INSTANTANEOUS incoming mail sound alert as I have the entire time I've owned the computer. Instead, it sound alerts me 2-3 minutes after the mail is laying in the box. I NEED the instantaneous alert for my competitive business. I was 10.4.11, then performed a clean installation of Snow Leopard.
BTW, I first upgraded to Snow Leopard and had a variety of glitches. Then, I started from scratch installing a clean install. Snow Leopard is fantastic.
HOWEVER - I need to fix this one glitch. Any ideas?

Same here... but with a twist.
Very weird. I have Mail.app set to play "new mail sound" as well as other mail-even sounds.
I have some rules that route some mail to another folder (mail box). When mail comes for those, I get the sound. But for mail that stays in the inbox, no sound. The in-box is an IMAP box while the others are "local." I used to get the sound on Tiger on my old Mini.
When mail comes into in-box it is "bold" (no-read) which is correct.
I have "dock count" set for in-box only. Works fine.
I get the "woosh" when sending mail.
I've tried setting mail preferences for "play sounds" to other sounds. Same thing.
I've tried it with the mail.app showing and with it hidden. Same thing.
I've tried closing and opening mail. I've tried re-booting. Still no sound for "in-box" mail that is not "routed" to another mail box.
This is a brand new iMac with SL. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on. Maybe there is a setting I missed somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Cannot turn off incoming mail sounds

I am running 10.8.1 on a new retina macbook.
I have tried every preference panel I can find and nothing seems to be able to turn off the incoming mail sound.
I am getting what I think is the "Basso" sound whenever a new mail message comes in.
I went to Mail Preferences and picked New Messages Sound>None.
Then I unchecked Play sounds for other mail actions
Still get the basso sound when new mail comes in.
I even rebooted to see if that would fix it.  No luck.
Then I went and tried to change the sound to something else.  That didn't work either.  Stuck on basso!
Even checked Notifications Center and the Sound Preferences Panel.  No luck there either.
I don't want to turn off sound entirely, just stop incoming mail sounds.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!
    thanks

Hi Mikibee...  Try this:  Mail / Preferences setting, from this window you will see (new message sound), set it to " none". Let me know if it worked for you.
                                                                                              Thanks.

  • Is the another way to mute incoming mail sound?

My new iPad Air has an annoying issue that I can't seem to solve.
I'm not a new user, this is my 3rd iPad.
What happens is that I have put the incoming mail sound to none in the settings. But still the incoming mail sound can be heard.
If I mute the Ring and Alerts sound, it stops. But that is annoying because now I can't hear my alarm or my keyboard clicks or applications within apps, like for instance a video on Facebook or Google+ doesn't have sound either and neither do some games? But if I un-mute it there is the annoying mail sound again.
I want to use my alarm but it's hard to sleep with a incoming mail sound going the whole night.
My slide button on the side is set to lock rotation and the bell is muted in the control panel.
I tried switching those but that doesn't make a difference.
    I have 2 mail accounts, a me.com and a gmail account.
I tried removing the gmail account, thought that might be the problem but it isn't.
I rebooted but the issue us still there.
Any of you have an idea what is causing my mail sound?
    Thanks,
    Christine

  • Why doesn't Skype Click-to-call work on Windows 8.1?

Why doesn't Skype click-to-call work anymore? I upgraded to Windows 8.1, and now when I click on a highlighted phone number it asks "Which app should I use" or some such microsoft text. But no application is listed. Apparently it does not work from within Firefox (I have the latest version). And I can no longer find a Skype Click to Call application or extension in Firefox. Do I need to use another browser or is there a fix for this?

    Hey ran
Sorry to hear you are having probloms
I currently have skype click to call installed with firefox and windows 8.1 up to date. I would advise you to re-install skype and its click to call addon and see where it gets you
    hope this helps

  • In Lion Apple's Mail sound works for about one half a day each time I close it and then open it but it lasts no longer than that

In Lion Apple's Mail sound works for about one half a day each time I close it and then open it but it lasts no longer than that. What is the fix?

Try disabling the IDLE switch in the account's Advanced preference panel.

  • No incoming mail sound

10.5.6 always had an incoming mail sound, and since updating to 10.5.7 no sound. The preferences still show the sound. What gives?

    Bruce,
Not sure about Mail Badger, but even in 10.5.6, the use of IDLE, at least with MobileMe, was known to inhibit the New Mail Alert -- this allows push mail, but impacts the sound.

why doesn't facetime on iphone 4 work without wifi with straight talk when other networks can?

Hardware requirements of the iphone 4 do not meet the specifications needed for FaceTime over cellular data.
4S and up do not require wifi for FaceTime.
    this is exactly as intended.

  • HT1430 INCOMING MAIL SOUND

I HAVE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO CHANGE MY INCOMING MAIL SOUND TO ANOTHER SOUND BUT ORIGINAL SELECTION KEEPS RECURRING....ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Just to check, is this where you changed the sound?
Settings > Sounds > New Mail
You selected a new sound or different sound yet your New Mail sound didn't change when you received new mail.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. Then attempt to change the sound again.

  • Why doesn't my iCloud mail work?

I changed my email user ID and all went well, Incoming Mail Server: SSL: ON / Outgoing Mail Server: SSL: ON
    Created Account.
Checked Mail Preferences Accounts, Incoming Mail Server; greyed out (mail example.com)  / Outgoing Mail Server: None
There's must be something I'm missing to make it right.
    I plead for your help.
    Thanks

Your icloud email isn't supposed to be setup manually on a system running mountain lion.
Go into system preferences, click the icloud icon, and check off mail there.
If you're trying to add an account associated with a different apple id, then set it up in mail, contacts and calendars and check off mail there.

  • Incoming Mail Sound

    G'day All,
Can anyone offer any advice on how to implement one of the sounds on offer on my iMac to alert me to incoming mail?
Apple Support tell me it SHOULD work but can't tell me why it doesn't.
Please keep any responses non-technical folks, you're talking to a Queenslander...
    Thanks in advance, Bill

    Hi Carolyn,
Sorry for the delay but we've been catching up with Australia's disasters, the top half is under water and the bottom half has gone up in flames, hundreds of homes lost in Victoria and the tragic loss of 25 lives and counting.
OK... I didn't get the full content of your last reply in my email, only the bit down to the thread item so have jumped the gun a bit to a degree and yes, I had read about Play Sound which I've downloaded (the 1.6.7 version).
This has proved to be a total disaster and although I've got my doorbell.aif file in Applications and can get it into Playsound I can't bring up the "Open with: Play Sound (default)" as per the Read Me file
'cos the window that opens up from the File > Get Info is purely version information!
On top of that, when I close the Play Sound window on my desktop, the doorbell vanishes too...
The good news is that I've achieved some success by following Mr LF's advice and I've now got the doorbell going berserk when I get incoming mail! Of course I've also got iTunes being launched as well but after after hours of blood, sweat and tears, what the ****?! Now if I can just get Play Sound sorted...
As a result of the above, I haven't followed your "And just for kicks" suggestion dependent on whether you feel it's still worth doing. I did try the "New Mail Sound" thing (prior to Apple scripting) without success.
We're getting there Carolyn, we're getting there!

  • I've recently switched routers on my iMac. The set-up appeared to go well, and my incoming mail is working, but my outgoing mail is not. I spent a long time sorting out the problem with my provider, who told me the problem is on the "Apple side".

I've recently switched routers on my iMac. The set-up seemed to go well, and the incoming mail works. The outgoing mail is the issue - it sits in the outbox buffering and doesn't send. After several calls to my service provider they decided the issue was on the "Apple side" since my internet connection seemed to be working fine, and all input information was correct - ports selected, etc. Any ideas what to try next?

Open Keychain in Utilites and delete all the "outgoing" entries (will probably be smtp.<your ISP name>.net). Then go into Mail Preferences>Accounts, clear out any passwords for the outgoing. Can't say exactly where this is or what this looks like in 10.7, since I'm running 10.6. Then enter new (EDIT: or can be the same old ones) passwords, or password. Allow Keychain to save those new ones.
FWIW, here's what this looks like in mine.
